The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is investigating the death of a Walnut Creek man who was found dead inside his jail cell at the West County Detention Facility (WCDF) in Richmond.

At approximately 1:40 p.m. today, a Deputy Sheriff was conducting room checks at the WCDF. While approaching a room, he noticed an inmate hanging from his bunk by a bed sheet. The Deputy Sheriff, as well as medical staff at the jail, immediately began lifesaving measures. The inmate was later pronounced deceased.

The inmate has been identified as 72-year-old Enrique Pina of Walnut Creek. He was arrested on September 24, 2018 and booked on nine felony charges that include sodomy with a child who is 10 years of age or younger, oral copulation of a child who is 10 years of age or younger, and using force to commit lewd and lascivious acts against a child under the age of 14.

Pina was being held in lieu of $4.8 million bail.

Pina, who was also suffering from a terminal illness, was evaluated last month by a Mental Health Clinician from Contra Costa Mental Health (CCMH). Pina was cleared to remain on the module at WCDF and was being monitored by CCMH.

The in-custody death protocol was invoked. The investigation is ongoing by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff.

Sucks so unbelievably bad. Took the easy way out. Burn in hell. Which is exactly what you sentenced your victim(s) to. A lifetime of hell. You got off way too easy.

Mother of Dragons October 16, 2019 - 6:18 PM - 6:18 PM

Bye POS! Have fun in hell!

This was the guy that was a groundskeeper at a private school in Walnut Creek and lived with his family in a house on the back part of the campus. The victim, who was not a student at the school, had been sexually abused for six years.

Martinez Guy October 16, 2019 - 9:08 PM - 9:08 PM

I’ve known the man for over 30 years and was married and had kids. I think it is more of an issue of another family member wanting residency without proving they are legal.

Norment October 17, 2019 - 12:38 AM - 12:38 AM

@Martinez guy
Absolutely NOT!
This goes WAY back!!! Trust me when I say this was not his first victim.

Henry got away with this for over 30 years.

Society can’t live with child molesters, and obviously, they can’t live with themselves. What a miserable existence, and so sad for the victims.

Adios! lolz.

Here’s hoping that this chapter can close and lead to healing for all the people that have been harmed, including the family of the deceased.

When I read the guy’s age I knew immediately his charges had to be child related. Good riddance.

So, it says nothing about him going to trial. Was he tried and convicted, or is this some sort of jailhouse justice based on acusation alone? Seems to happen a lot at the Sheriff’s facilities. Unfortunately, it deprives the victim of their day in court and, therefore, their chance to see justice done.

“Seems to happen a lot at the Sheriff’s facilities”

Can’t stop someone from doing this unless you have a 24 hour watch on them. It’s not the facility. It’s a nasty old POS that probably couldn’t live with himself any longer.

People who are convicted aren’t “held in lieu of bail” in county jail…

Thank God for miracles! One less pedophile in the world is a blessing. I pray his victims get the correct counseling and can live a good life.

Saves to cost of a trial and the resulting trauma of victims forced to testify and relive their trauma. I understand that Satan has created a new, hotter level in his realm for precisely this kind of ‘resident’.

Kentucky Derby October 17, 2019 - 10:49 AM - 10:49 AM

It is the “nasty old POS that couldn’t live with himself any more.” It does deprive the victim her day in court, but it also saves her from the heartache of having to relive it in court (re-victimizing the victim) and it saves the taxpayers money. I have no empathy for sex offenders, and my compassion is for the victims.

Norment October 17, 2019 - 12:14 PM - 12:14 PM

I don’t believe for a second that “he could no longer live with himself”
I DO believe that Henry as he went by at the school knew dam well he was guilty and he was going to pay!
This was not his first offense! This man has raped young girls for at least 30 years as I know of as I know one of his victims from 30 years ago.
He knew his time was up and he was too cowardly to face his victims in a court of law

Look at it October 17, 2019 - 1:04 PM - 1:04 PM

YES! What Norment said 👆👍
The filthy coward has been at it for a long time and took the easy way out!

I feel horrible for all of his victims. You are in my prayers.

Jreal October 17, 2019 - 11:40 PM - 11:40 PM

@norment What do you know about his past? Sounds like you knew him well.

The Mamba October 17, 2019 - 1:25 PM - 1:25 PM

Bye bye dirtbag.

Gittyup October 17, 2019 - 1:40 PM - 1:40 PM

Amazing that some of you knew he’d been at it for so long, but he was only recently aprehended and charged. Personally, I would rather hear testimony and evidence presented at trial, as well as victim’s statements. It is how our system of justice operates.

He could, of course, have taken a plea deal and avoided trial. As it turns out, all I know for sure was that he was accused and that doesn’t make him guilty. But, I don’t know the victims, maybe you do. Even so, the standard in our judicial system is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law and that didn’t happen.

Norment October 17, 2019 - 1:55 PM - 1:55 PM

Oh it WAS reported.
And as all too often it gets swept under the rug.

Rollo Tomasi October 17, 2019 - 4:55 PM - 4:55 PM

When these myriad rapes occurred and went unheeded by law enforcement, did anyone go to the press?

Janon October 17, 2019 - 4:43 PM - 4:43 PM

Satan at work. This life may be FULL of sadness and trouble, but Satan cowers in the name of Jesus Christ-pray always-its what our Father in Heaven wants, us to be connected to Him because he loves us. People can do HORRIBLE things through the lies and deception of the enemy, but people are accountable to God at the end of their life-man can’t take your soul-keep God first place and his love and abundance will overflow in your life. We may have troubles in this life but continue in obedience to God, and Love God, and also your fellow people because you never know who God put in your life who needs His love to flow through you. God has a plan for you! There is no explaining sin and evil, but God is close to the broken-hearted. Prayers for those involved that God will provide His healing, love and comfort.

As a follower of Jesus Christ, AMEN! Well said.

I can’t say I’m heartbroken by this.
