Red Flag Warning Issued For Nearly All Of North, East Bay Starting This Morning

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for nearly all elevations in the North and East Bay starting today and lasting until Thursday afternoon.

The warning for extreme fire danger was issued as a dry and windy weather system enters the region, NWS officials said. The warning will run until 5 p.m. Thursday.

The areas of most concern are greater than 1,000 feet in elevation in the North and East Bay Hills, but NWS meteorologist Duane Dykema said the warning applies to the valleys, as well.

A wind advisory is also in effect starting 6 a.m. Wednesday. Wind gusts of up to 30 mph are expected in the valleys. In the hills, sustained 20-30 mph winds and gusts of 45-55 mph – and higher locally on Wednesday night – are expected.

Where is the wind? The ten pm news had a half an hour on the high winds that were suppose to show up last night. PG&E is in panic mode. I think we have reached our over reaction mode.

Exactly…Concord is at 1MPH NW right now. Basically no wind at all.

Does any one know if the same problem exists in Southern California?

Simonpure October 9, 2019 - 10:24 AM - 10:24 AM

Southern California Edison announced it, too, was considering preventive power outages. The utility said that given the anticipated possibly strong Santa Ana winds, power could be cut off to more than 106,000 customers in parts of eight Southern California counties.
Edison’s possible outage would primarily affect customers in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Also under consideration are areas in Ventura County and portions of Kern, Tulare, Inyo and Mono counties.

Am I living on another planet. I’m looking out the window and I don’t see any of the wind that was predicted. No wind in Concord!! What’s happening with the PG&E predicted power shut offs school closures, tunnel closurer?? Just looking for clarity. Trying to understand what PG&E is up to.

Willis October 9, 2019 - 9:22 AM - 9:22 AM

I wonder if PG&E will turn the power back on before dark to avoid looting in some areas. Sorry, not drinking the “we care so much for your safety (this time)” Kool-Aid.

Yeah, I kept looking for wind last night but the trees were still. Right now the wind is 2 mph. I’ve heard the real high is expected to be 15 mph.

Power stayed up but Comcast didn’t.

Question Everything October 9, 2019 - 10:42 AM - 10:42 AM

Just curious… checking the weather app for various cities in our area.. the winds for tonight are forecasted at 11 MPH. Hardly seems like a high-wind event they are predicting.

Gittyup October 9, 2019 - 10:48 AM - 10:48 AM

I think PGE was just feeling unappreciated and decided to show us all how much we really need them. I’m starting to see some leaves flutter at Concord/Clayton border.

This map shows Santa Rosa. The wind speed right now in Santa Rosa is only 8mph and won’t get much higher over the rest of the day or overnight. The map says low humidity, but the current humidity in Santa Rosa right now is 29%.

So far, the NOAA models that PG&E has been following have been wrong.

Strad October 9, 2019 - 11:38 AM - 11:38 AM

So is this a PG&E Test run on it’s equipment and response time. Are their meteorological service that inaccurate?

Bad Nombre October 9, 2019 - 11:42 AM - 11:42 AM

Yes, but is the red flag flapping?

Kirkwood October 9, 2019 - 11:58 AM - 11:58 AM

The current wind map shows mild prevailing westerlies for the Bay Area.
NOAA is saying the worst won’t be until tomorrow, but even then the predictions are for the higher elevations, probably 1500′ or higher.
