MDUSD Provides Power Outage Status List Of All District Schools

by CLAYCORD.com

The Mt. Diablo Unified School District has created a power shutoff status list of all MDUSD School Sites.

The District will continue to monitor the events, and will provide updated information to the community should there be any need to close schools, or modify school schedules.

The District is working with the local officials, PG&E, and staying in communication with school leaders to monitor the situation and prepare to take action if necessary. As of this time, all District schools will remain open.

The district says they believe “keeping schools open provides a safe place for students to be and will strive to do so with the limited information we have received from PG&E on the specifics of any actual shut downs that impact our facilities.”

Question:
I am a teacher at contra costa Christian school. I was wondering if we are open or close.

Thank you, this is helpful information

Why doesn’t PG&E do the job of clearing beneath their power lines?? Then they don’t need the black outs..

Martin October 8, 2019 - 9:19 PM - 9:19 PM

Maybe because they are bankrupt after being blamed for ALL of the damage from the last fire.

Kevin October 9, 2019 - 6:27 AM - 6:27 AM

Then why is the CEO of PG and E receiving a bonus if they are bankrupt. All their troubles happened when their executives were making money hands over fist because they weren’t keeping up with failing infrastructure like the gas lines that erupted in San Bruno. Many people lost their lives due to that criminal negligence.

Max October 9, 2019 - 12:09 PM - 12:09 PM

Necause infrastructure is expensive and no one wants to pay for it. Pg&e execs make the same kind of money they would at any other multibillion dollar company.

Will Clayton Valley Charter High school be affected and if so is it open or closed?

DS OHara October 8, 2019 - 6:20 PM - 6:20 PM

Why are not Concord High School, El Dorado Middle School and Westwood Elementary closed? They are right next to Dana Estates and their electricity will be stopped.

Why is El Monte iin this group of closed schools? It is in a zone where the electricity will not be off?

Mmmmhhhhhhmmmm October 8, 2019 - 7:21 PM - 7:21 PM

They may be in a different grid

concord ygnacio October 8, 2019 - 6:33 PM - 6:33 PM

Sorry. A school without power is not a safe place to be. Keeping the students there is arguably child endangerment. All the impacted districts elsewhere are closing their schools in advance.

Also, why is CPHS impacted, but not VVMS next door?

AnonZ October 8, 2019 - 7:51 PM - 7:51 PM

It is a safe place for those kids who would otherwise be left hungry and home with no supervision (parents still have to work). It also keeps them out of trouble for 6-7 hours a day..

Laina October 8, 2019 - 8:44 PM - 8:44 PM

I agree. It should be an option to bring your child tomorrow.

concord ygnacio October 9, 2019 - 7:32 AM - 7:32 AM

There will be no water, as the water fountains will not work without electricity. Students will not be allowed to use the restrooms, as they will be pitch black dark. Fire alarms will not work. The school will not be able to be properly locked down in case of a mass shooter. Phones will not work. There will be no lunches, as refrigerators and ovens will not work.

This is a huge safety risk.

BTW, we lost power at the Irvin Deutscher YMCA in PH a few years ago. They immediately evacuated everyone because of the safety risk, due to lack of fire alarms.

Leaving your kids at home unsupervised is also child endangerment. At lest there would be food and water though, as opposed to at school.

S October 8, 2019 - 6:58 PM - 6:58 PM

some of the areas are not fire danger area but are supplied by lines that go to danger locations and are going to be shut down. one school right next to another may be on a grid/line that the other is not. Grid lines have to start and end somewhere… seems goofy, but true.

arob October 8, 2019 - 7:02 PM - 7:02 PM

Anyone know why Mt. Diablo Elementary, Highlands Elementary, and Pine Hollow Middle will be down? Says that they are close to a transformer, but apparently nowhere else is Clayton is affected? Seems a bit odd?

Electrified October 8, 2019 - 7:59 PM - 7:59 PM

Maybe it’s precautionary because of the substation at the corner of Ygnacio Valley Rd & Pine Hollow Rd? Does anyone have expertise in this topic?

Mmmmmhhmmm October 8, 2019 - 7:16 PM - 7:16 PM

It does not say those schools will be closed, it is only stating which schools may be affected.

arob October 8, 2019 - 7:56 PM - 7:56 PM

I know they won’t be closed as MDE has already sent out notice saying the school will be open even if the power is out. I’m curious as to why those schools seem to be the only things that might be affected in the immediate area.

Annie October 8, 2019 - 7:50 PM - 7:50 PM

Potential Impact —- Will not know if any or which schools will be closed till some time tonight or in the morning.

Jaymie October 8, 2019 - 8:05 PM - 8:05 PM

Teacher @ Shore Acres Elementary. Will they be closed?

ZZ October 8, 2019 - 8:58 PM - 8:58 PM

What a big joke being played on Californians! The state of California has no shame!

Iskimb October 9, 2019 - 3:17 PM - 3:17 PM

Absolutely agree. If PG&E just did their due diligence and maintained their equipment then past fires couldve possibly been avoided and the current state possibly as well. 800,000…including hospitals, schools, gas pumps, grocery stores, traffic lights…really? 🤷‍♂️

MommaToTwo October 8, 2019 - 9:13 PM - 9:13 PM

As of 9 pm, no schools are closed. Send your kids to school as usual. You will be notified if anything changes. This is a big decision to cancel school…they lose A LOT of money when school is cancelled. There is no fire, there are no closures at this time. Cross your fingers that nothing happens.

Iskimb October 9, 2019 - 3:24 PM - 3:24 PM

Everybody affected loses. The schools? How bout gas stations, grocery stores, small businesses…how bout consumers who are about to go 3-5 days possibly with no refrigeration, hot water, stoves. How about traffic congestion and high accident risk with no streetlights?

BigSis October 8, 2019 - 9:28 PM - 9:28 PM

What I don’t understand is why MDUSD thinks school is a safer place to be…trust me. With 34 kids in my classroom, I’m not quite sure what they think I’m going to be doing that’s better than being with mom or dad. Classrooms are actually pretty dark in many schools and HOT. Turn off air conditioning and what’s the point? They will be a mess. Not to mention the teachers have families that now are out of school or have medical issues that make them go to alternative areas-per the state’s newest email to medical baseline patients. I think it’s pretty rude that the district hasn’t even bothered to contact the employees and give a reasonable answer.

Thunderrun86 October 8, 2019 - 10:16 PM - 10:16 PM

You can’t close the Coldicott tunnel that’s dumb because every time I go to visit my grandparents in Quincy California there’s no lights in those tunnels we have what we call lights turn your lights on there’s no reason to close down the tunnel because it has no power use your lights it’s not rocket science I think people are just getting too comfortable with government taking care of everything for you making decisions

Common Sense October 9, 2019 - 7:37 AM - 7:37 AM

It’s not because of the lights. It’s because of the fans that are needed to push the carbon monoxide out of the tunnel. The tunnels are long enough for CO to become trapped in there, and if there is heavy traffic or a wreck, people could die of CO poisoning.

But good news: they are NOT closing the tunnel. So all is well.

DistrictParent October 8, 2019 - 10:24 PM - 10:24 PM

MDUSD as usual is making questionable decisions. Teachers at one elementary school have been told to expect the power to go out and the school to remain OPEN.

Imagine a localized power outage where the traffic signals are out, yet parents driving to pick up their kids at school.

No lunch as the kitchen is without power, no A/C, the MDUSD is a joke, and is making poor decisions for our community.

Susan October 9, 2019 - 5:49 PM - 5:49 PM

District Parent
It’s not hot and we went to school without air conditioning. Drive safe. Leave earlier and be patient. What a great lesson to teach your children. Pack them a lunch. The room’s are not dark. Do you think it’s better for kid’s to be left home alone in the dark? I think being a school is much safer for most children. No light and people have to take turns. That’s awesome and something that is important for children to learn.

concord ygnacio October 9, 2019 - 7:39 AM - 7:39 AM

I think maybe PGE is teaching us a lesson too.

Beth October 9, 2019 - 1:13 PM - 1:13 PM

I totally agree.

Iskimb October 9, 2019 - 3:33 PM - 3:33 PM

The only lesson I’m seeing is their negligence in monitoring, fixing and/or upgrading their equipment has somehow given them the power to selectively choose who they want to punish for their negligence but cutting service. Be interesting to see what tune they’d be singing if consumers had a choice like ATT, Comcast, direct, etc.
