California Politicians Vow To Fight For State Auto Emissions Standards

by CLAYCORD.com

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Attorney General Xavier Becerra and state Air Resources Board Chair Mary Nichols vowed on Wednesday to go to court to fight President Donald Trump’s administration’s plan to revoke the state’s authority to set strict auto emissions standards.

“There’s no question we will be in court as soon as we have a document out there. This is the fight of a lifetime,” Nichols said at a Sacramento news conference by the three officials.

Newsom said the legal battle may take “years and years,” but said, “California will prevail because we’re leaders.”

The intent to take away California’s ability to set standards stricter than the federal standards was announced by Trump in a tweet Wednesday. The President said this move will “Produce far less expensive cars for the consumer, while at the same time making the cars substantially SAFER. This will lead to more production because of this pricing and safety advantage, and also due to the fact that older, highly polluting cars, will be replaced by new, extremely environmentally friendly cars.”

He added, “There will be very little difference in emissions between the California Standard and the new U.S. Standard, but the cars will be far safer and much less expensive. Many more cars will be produced under the new and uniform standard, meaning significantly more JOBS, JOBS, JOBS!”

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it will make “a major policy announcement” on Thursday.

Becerra said, “We can’t afford to backslide to the days of dirty air and unregulated emissions.”

Great, so Trump wants Californians to choke to death on smog. You think it’s bad now? Wait until the pollution gets even worse and then you combine that with fires? Say goodbye to your lungs. That nasty cloud you see over LA as you come down the grapevine? Yeah, that’s going to be like how it was in the 70’s.

Come on conservatives, you guys worship Reagan, why not honor the man who worked to get us the exemption int he first place? The good news is that this will be tied up in courts long enough for Trump to get voted out.

Silva September 18, 2019 - 5:22 PM - 5:22 PM

He knows he’ll never win our vote so he wants vengeance.

Chicken Little September 19, 2019 - 6:45 AM - 6:45 AM

Oh, get over the doom and gloom BS. Are other states choking on 1970s levels of smog? No, they’re not. Non-California cars are 99.99% as clean as California cars, but cost a lot less. It does no good at all to have cars that are .01% cleaner if people can’t afford to buy them. The more new cars we can get on the road, the better.

At stop lights while waiting for the green it is not uncommon for engine of vehicle to turn off for what so the manufacturer can make unrealistic mileage numbers An from what I’ve observed cars continue to get smaller adding plastic and using less steel while adding air bags to lessen impact of occupants heads hitting vehicle cabin structure.

There’s no way I’ll ever believe the newer cars are safer.
Little more than air-bagged coffins on wheels.

And Thank You politicians for filing yet another lawsuit, which hopefully makes it to The Supreme Court, for Trump will win.

MoJo September 18, 2019 - 5:40 PM - 5:40 PM

Newer cars are most definitely safer. I spent 30 years in the Fire Service on an Engine that ran calls on Highway 80. In the 80’s and early 90’s we saw some horrendous accidents and injuries involving older vehicles. Once vehicles starting adding airbags and crumple zones the severity of injuries, even in high speed collisions, went way down. Older vehicles while heavier and more solid don’t give nearly as much so the forces are transferred to the occupants. It’s not unusual to see today’s cars completely destroyed and overturned and have the occupants walk away relatively unscathed, even in smaller cars. I know it seems contrary to logic but it’s true. I witnessed it time and time again. Can people still be thrashed and killed in vehicle accidents? Of course, but give me the newer vehicle with modern engineering and safety features every time.

HooHaa September 19, 2019 - 9:41 AM - 9:41 AM

Newer cars are definitely safer. The stats don’t lie.

Steel doesn’t make a car safer, would make it more rigid and add more mass, which would send more energy to your body on impact. Airbags protect you. The car might get destroyed but it keeps you safe in the process.

Commonsensenor September 18, 2019 - 4:34 PM - 4:34 PM

Cali politicians freaking out, willing to go to war against Trump for making it easier for car makers, when we can’t walk on the streets of SF without stepping in poo, needles, or fear of being bitten by the homeless zombies.

Great job!

The Sky Is Falling!!!!!

The Arctic Ocean is warming, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too “hot”, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from the Consulate at Bergen, Norway.
Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard of temperatures in the Arctic zone.
Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met.
Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.
Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds.
Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.

Washington Post, November 2, 1922, 96 years ago.

(who can forget, 20 years ago, that meathead, ted danson, crying about our oceans losing all life by 2010!)
So you go ahead governor and do as your masters demand of you. Soon enough we’ll read of the folly you, Attorney General Xavier Becerra and state Air Resources Board Chair Mary Nichols perpetrated on the voters and you will all be outed as the fools / criminals you truly are.

Newsom said the legal battle may take “years and years,” but said, “California will prevail because we’re leaders.”

leaders in what …..lol
crime and bums …sure are
as far as a eye for the future and enabling the people to flourish
BIG FAT NO

if you mean giving all the school funding to illegals and all the lowincome housing as well creating a housing vacuum that they now blamed on building owners ….lol

or the bridge tolls and 5 tax hikes going to fund illegals as well
measure Q gas tax 1/2 cent tax soda tax …raised bridge tolls 3 times in 5 years all for roads yet roads are the worst and still are

before the dems took control of the state the roads were maintained every 5 years ….scraped and new asphalt added

now they just slurry it so it lasts maybe 2 years …..then say they have no money …and raise taxes again ….

but yeah this article now says they will only make certain vehicles and outlaw others ….hmmm so what union are they beholding to that we are only able to buy what they say we can now ….wow

WELCOME TO COMMUNISM AT ITS WORST ….

next are the bread lines ….and fuel lines …as well as oh yeah you have to live where they say …that will be awesome ….

I get the feeling Newsom doesn’t even believe anymore what he’s hawking from that podium. It’s like in his time off from politics he took acting lessons or something. He steps up to the microphone telling himself, “I have to sound serious and a little angry.” But, he’s just not convincing. Whenever he issues a soundbite, I expect him at any minute to crack up laughing and say, “Does anybody really believe this bs?”

burnbabyburn September 19, 2019 - 5:16 AM - 5:16 AM

Answer: leaders in stupidity and hipocrisy. California has laws making it legal for a single driver in a $100,000 newer Tesla to whiz by in a commuter lane while the driver in a $2500 older Ford is sitting in traffic, idling. Seems backwards. The ford would give off less emissions if it was driving in the commuter lane, and the Tesla (no emissions) should be waiting in traffic.

But what the heck let’s just keep increasing the population in the state that doesn’t have the natural resources to support so many. But what the heck will say we’re making tape air cleaner. Political BS. I’d be hard pressed to say there is any difference in the exhaust of a out of state car compared to ours

The Fearless Spectator September 18, 2019 - 6:24 PM - 6:24 PM

One trait all sucessful leaders have in common is the ability to choose which battles to fight. Using that as a litmus test, Mr. Newsom is no leader. Eliminating plastic straws and adding 3 MPG will not change nature in a measurable way. It’s just an attempt to be remembered a certain way in the history books. And he will spend a lot of our money to make sure that rememberance is just terrific.

Perhaps getting a handle on homelessness, crime, and mental illness are a better place to start. Of course that will require results. Focusing on climate change insures he will never be judged on lack of success as any measurable results will be years out.

Mr. Newsom has shown he is not especially good at getting his arms around current, potentially solvable problems. However, he is excellent at getting his arms around other people’s wives. I guess we all have our specialties…..

Cautiously Informed September 18, 2019 - 9:06 PM - 9:06 PM

The California Democrat politicians don’t ever handle any of the big issues because they don’t have the intelligence, skill, know how and ability to do so. However, they are very good at inventing nothing issues for themselves to handle and resolve, like making it illegal to discriminate against hairstyles.

The energy efficient bulbs did more damage than regular bulbs. As soon as everyone started using compact fluorescent bulbs mercury levels started climbing from the bulbs being thrown away. But what the heck it’s only mercury it’s not a green house gas right. Maybe that explains the lefts thought process from all the mercury they have absorbed

Original G September 18, 2019 - 7:33 PM - 7:33 PM

I wouldn’t worry about this minor matter: neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are proposing anything meaningful to deal with the increasing global temperature and the resultant changing climates around the planet. The fact that all the glaciers and the polar ice are melting at an ever-increasing rate means that Kevin Costner’s movie, “Waterworld” wasn’t a historic flop, but a prophetic depiction of what this planet will become.
(Okay, I confess – I went the long way around to use this analogy.)

Dawg September 19, 2019 - 1:36 AM - 1:36 AM

The Ice Age ended 15,000 years ago and the world has been warming ever since. In the grand scheme of things, 15,000 years is like last week. The media makes it seem as if every scientist and meteorologist agree that it is the fault of humans, and that is not true. There are just as many scientists and meteorologists that say the changing climate is a natural occurrence No scientist has proven definitively that climate change is caused by man.

Chicken Little September 19, 2019 - 6:54 AM - 6:54 AM

Rob September 19, 2019 - 7:53 AM - 7:53 AM

LOL – so NOW Conservatives hate State’s Rights…

California is not imposing anything on any other state.

It’s very simple.

California sets emissions for THEIR state.

If auto companies want to sell cars in CA they follow the CA standards – or they are free to simply not sell in CA.

Also, auto companies can make cars for CA and other cars for the other states.

It’s not California’s problem that they have so many people, who buy so many cars that the other puny states feel hurt that they will never have the same influence on the market.

Sam September 19, 2019 - 8:37 AM - 8:37 AM

Oh but it is California’s problem. Not to mention it’s called interfering with interstate commerce. Sometimes it’s more important than states rights. Quit your division tactics Rob they are played out. “Conservatives” this and that. It’s played. Federal law Trumps state law. California is not special or extra important, get over yourself. You are free to donate all the money you want to whatever cause you are a fan of. I have watched your posts..your a straight hack for progressives. Grow up, be a real person who thinks for yourself. The pro-Trump posters have no problem when Trump makes the absurd claim LED light bulbs make only him look orange. The pro-posters pretend it’s only about man caused global warming.

Last week I saw a list of 85 environmental regulations that Trump has rolled back. The list included mining regulations, clean water rules, toxic substances and safety, drilling and extraction, animal regulations, infrastructure rule to protect areas from flooding, child safety from toxic chemicals, etc.
