DeSaulnier Announces Bipartisan Legislation To Make College More Affordable For Low Income Students

Congressman Mark DeSaulnier announced the introduction of the Pell Grant Flexibility Act, legislation to protect low income students from being taxed on using their Pell Grants for non-tuition goods and services.

Each year approximately eight million students receive Pell Grants, which are awarded to students from low income families. Currently, Pell Grants can be used to cover both tuition and non-tuition expenses. However, when students use these funds for non-tuition expenses, their Pell Grant is taxed, while strictly tuition costs are exempt.

“The cost of a college education is not limited to tuition. Textbooks, off-campus housing, transportation, and child care can account for 60 to 80 percent of the total cost of higher education and those expenses continue to rise each year,” said Congressman DeSaulnier. “Instead of taxing Pell and creating a disincentive for students to use the grants they deserve, this bill would allow students to take their focus off of finances and put it back on working toward a degree.”

Or you can get a job like I did during college and work you way through college. Also, what’s with the child care expense associated with college expenses? Don’t be having kids until you are out of college and financially prepared.

I worked my way thru college on the GI Bill. I gave up 2 years of my life, with one spent in a SE Asia war zone. If the poor want an education, they should earn it, not have it handed to them. Those who succeed, will deserve the benefits; those who can’t, can flip burgers. It’s survival of the fittest, no matter how much you want to try to change nature.

There are two types of students that get into the University of California, the very poor who are financed by taxpayer with the help of people like De Saulnier, and the very rich who’s parents make large donations to the campus they attended, who then admit their children. If you score middle class, you’re out of luck. You’ll have to pay full price. In fact, your parents can pay taxes in this state for eighteen years supporting these institutions, and it doesn’t mean you’ll be admitted. Foreigners and out-of-state admissions have a better chance of getting in than you..

Another Demorat principle:
Teach the poor that they don’t have to work for anything.
Teach those that work for what they need that they will be constantly penalized.

Take away all the financial aid given to illegals immigrants for education and there will be enough money to give to those who need it without hurting their budgets by paying taxes. There are disabled students who cannot work and need financial aid.

Bill Cutting July 19, 2019 - 8:45 AM - 8:45 AM

More pandering. I agree get a job it’s not my responsibility to pay for your college education.

Typical politician jumping on the band wagon after there is no room for one more.

Nonina they need to deport the 30 to 40 million illegals currently living in our country.. cease their assets and we can pay for a lot of things with that money also they need to cease all of El Chapo‘s assets all of Jeffrey Epstein‘s assets as well as the Clintons when they are found guilty of pedophilia … same with all seditious mayors and governors that should be arrested for aiding and abetting illegal aliens that’s on the books as a law that they are breaking currently. I’m appalled that they are not being served justice as they should be at the gallows
