Just announcing I will be retiring from the Last/First competition.
After winning both Last & First, last Friday ….I’ve decided to call it quits… retire from the game while I’m on top.
Reflexes are getting slower… eyesight isn’t as sharp as it used to be.
Nope! That’s all for me, stepping out before I get too old & pathetic and wind up embarrassing myself…. let somebody else go nuts trying to guess the magic minute to post…let someone else play forever like the Rolling Stones, never accepting old age or willing to realize that it’s over… just keep fooling myself into thinking I still got it while folks laugh and snicker behind my back… no siree!

Gittyup May 29, 2019 at 11:06 PM

Right! Good strategy. Go out at the top of your game. Although Mick Jagger is making a mighty speedy recovery and they are in unusually good shape for guys their age considering how some of them took care of themselves. Might be good to keep the skills honed. And, you are on a roll, now.

If you want to laugh and feel better, look up on youtube the Osmonds singing Down ByThe Lazy River. Who knew they rocked so hard?? ( )

S May 25, 2019 at 7:47 AM

they were actually pretty good; toe tappin’

Dawg May 25, 2019 at 8:10 AM

The jumpsuits the Osmonds are wearing were designed by Bill Belew, the same guy that designed the jumpsuits for Elvis.

Justifiable Languor May 25, 2019 at 9:10 AM

That old stuff always makes me laugh. Feel good!

Silva May 25, 2019 at 10:04 AM

Are they actually playing those guitars, or are they props? I can’t hear them.

Kirkwood May 25, 2019 at 11:06 AM

The Osmonds had a TV show way back when. I don’t remember seeing any of them ever playing an instrument.

Even today I see singers holding an acoustic guitar, perhaps holding a chord or two or even never touching the neck. I suspect they need a prop or something to do with their hands, like a handheld mic.

Doh May 25, 2019 at 11:25 AM

Guitars are props. The player on the right isn’t changing chords. It is hard to play while jumping around.

Dorothy May 24, 2019 at 9:09 PM

Just a reminder: The Walnut Creek/East Bay Chapter of the ASG is having their semi-annual fundraising Stash Sale May 25th. Open and free to the public from 9 AM to 1 PM at 4349 Cowell Rd, Concord. (Odd Fellows Hall) Fabrics at bargain prices (most $1 or $2 a yard), patterns, yarn, notions, and a few newly serviced sewing machines in good working order. No early birds, please.

Yes, cash, check or credit card is okay. I know there will be lots of fat quarters and Christmas fabrics. Come early for best choices.

do you support illegal immigrants in your community ? If so why ? and how much money goes to providing services to them ? Also why don’t city’s consider putting a tax on remittances sent to other countries ?

Haley May 24, 2019 at 10:24 PM

I’m thinking about switching to a Credit Union. Which one would you recommend?

Roz May 24, 2019 at 10:48 PM

Do IT~~,…I like Patelco Credit Union.
Been with them 27 years, glad I left B of A.

JazzMan May 25, 2019 at 7:45 AM

Agree! I too have been w them at least 20 yrs.

S May 25, 2019 at 7:56 AM

NOT Travis CU. Their ATM system is routinely hacked and sometimes don’t even notify the customers. If you do use them Do Not link any of your accounts to an ATM Card; but then why bother at all.

regarding the BofA comment of Roz. a few years back, I was administrator to a trust. Had to deal with 5 financial institutions. The Will/Trust attorney said BofA would be difficult to deal with and possibly even shady. Said he would pro-bono anything I needed in dealing with BofA. He was right. PLEASE take my advise: If you are to be an executor and/or you know anyone who has accounts with BofA… Get out of there without delay. They will Not work in your best regard.

anon May 25, 2019 at 10:43 AM

I also had a horrible time with Bank of America and I will never deal with them again. Worst customer service I’ve ever experienced.

Tsa May 25, 2019 at 10:54 AM

1st Northern California CU (1st NorCal) very low or no fees, good interest rates and well run. Multiple branches

Jojo Potato May 25, 2019 at 12:21 PM

I’ve been with Spectrum CU for years and years. Always nice and helpful. And I can get a $50 bonus by referring a new person. How about it? Seriously, they’re great.

Cowellian May 25, 2019 at 1:05 PM

We used to have an account with Contra Costa Federal Credit Union, but I decided they weren’t meeting our needs anymore, so I switched to Bank of America and never looked back. We have been very happy with BofA.

MIchael May 25, 2019 at 9:38 PM

Patelco is great. BofA not at all. Went through a divorce and 2 years after it was finalized I started seeing mystery withdrawals. Reported it to BofA and had my card replaced but it kept happening. BofA launched an investigation to find out it was my ex-wife inadvertently doing the withdrawals. BofA had linked her new ATM card to my separate account. Thank god my ex transferred the money back willingly because BofA was unable to do so without a court order.

RS May 26, 2019 at 8:20 AM

Pacific Service Credit Union! I’ve been with them for over 10 years. The staff is great. They have low rates. There’s a local branch in Concord and Pleasant Hill.

James May 25, 2019 at 1:05 AM

Just heard what sounded like about 40 gunshots at various intervals, all pretty close together in Pleasant Hill. Around 1 AM

Silver Belle May 25, 2019 at 8:03 AM

Heard the same thing. Had trouble getting through to 911 but when we finally did were told told someone was setting off fireworks in the park.

S May 26, 2019 at 6:36 PM

@Silver Belle; getting through to 911 should not have been a trouble….

The California Office of Emergency Services has regulations and the National Emergency Number Association have guidelines that you can google and print out. You should file a complaint with the City Manager and Council; not the police department.

You should have been answered within 10 to 20 seconds.
They take plenty of your tax dollar; there should be NO excuse!

jon s May 25, 2019 at 4:34 AM

That’s odd.I thought I stopped at 30.

Justifiable Languor May 25, 2019 at 7:54 AM

Things like this confuse me.

Which online dictionary to choose? Oxford which is an English version? Macmillan which is an American version. So many to choose from. I love a good slang version, but it has a very limited use.

Any favorites out there? Times they are a changing.

CoCoOld May 25, 2019 at 8:14 AM

I have always liked Webster’s New World dictionary. All the entries have etymologies and most also have examples in a sentence.

Antler May 25, 2019 at 2:50 PM

Try Merriam Webster and see what you think. I really have benefitted from that site, including there sending me the free “Word a Day” email, which also has free “test yourself” word games to help keep your memory and reasoning skills honed.

Mary Fouts May 25, 2019 at 3:45 PM

A dictionary is one thing I’m not an online fan of. I use my Webster’s Third New International Dictionary for reference, with it’s printed updates I keep in a binder. I read several pages a week to improve my vocabulary. Best book I ever purchased.

Justifiable Languor May 26, 2019 at 9:50 AM

Thank you CoCo Old. I love the history behind words as well.

Antler and Mary Fouts, your input is appreciated as well. I still have my old Random House College Dictionary that I bought back in the 70’s. I bought a newer dictionary 10-15 years later, before I discovered the variation of quality. I especially like the online versions because of pronunciation. I like hearing the word.

JazzMan May 25, 2019 at 8:06 AM

What happened to Janis, and the Traffic Jammin’ column? The last issue was back in December. I look forward to reading all about the traffic woes and questions from all around Claycord.

Dorothy May 25, 2019 at 9:06 AM

The column is still listed for Mondays but I suspect it needs some updating. I miss her too.

Cowellian May 25, 2019 at 9:07 AM

Janis got a new job.

Jojo Potato May 25, 2019 at 10:53 AM

I like Berkeleyside, a real Berkeley perspective.

Sick of it May 25, 2019 at 9:18 AM

It’s the start of summer soon and people are out enjoying walks through neighbors hoods along with there kids on bikes. No slow the heck down through the neighborhoods as you pass through in your car. Stop at stop signs, and yes even when you make that quick right turn. Give pedestrians a chance at life by not running them over. If you can’t do that then stick to main streets and quit cutting through where we live and take the shortest route to your own house where you would probably gripe about anybody driving fast in front of your house.

Aintnobodygottimeforthat May 25, 2019 at 11:03 AM

Whatever happened to Rickie Keefer? He was supposed to stand trial this week.

Mac n cheese May 25, 2019 at 11:39 AM

Would be nice if road closures would be listed along with the announcement of the kid’s fest downtown. I assume that’s why Willow Pass road was closed from Olivera to Galindo. It really was a huge inconvenience. It wasn’t listed on the city’s website either.

JazzMan May 25, 2019 at 12:13 PM

WP Rd was Closed Todos Santos to Hwy 4 for the Armed Forces marathon. I saw it announced Thursday (if not before).

Anon May 25, 2019 at 12:21 PM

This is a Critical issue which Concord needs to address. It’s always some damn drama on Concords three main arteries: Monument, Willow Pass and Concord Ave.

Example last week: What in the world was being worked on at the Intersection of Willow Pass & Diamond blvd???
Could it at least be done AT NIGHT, or wait until a non- holiday week? Come On now. This is neither green, nor is it safe. Post up a report of traffic accidents at this location due to the work being performed.

Gittyup May 25, 2019 at 1:47 PM

Wonder who is designing the detours. Instead of sending Clayton Road traffic by BART to Cowell, or down Concord Blvd., they let us get all the way to Willow Pass. It created a major traffic jam. We had to double back and snake our way through the city.

Frankly, I think there are places more appropriate for something like a kid fest or marathon than the full-on center of town where all the main freeway access converges via the primary routes through town.

I go to Clayton Post Ofgice maybe four times a year and invariably there is some event in progress that makes it near posduble to get there.

apollo idol prudence May 25, 2019 at 12:54 PM

need some serious help. my google account has been frozen, and the security code was sent to an account that i am unable to access (my friend who set this up in 2002 and he’s been issing) . now everything is gone, even facebook all of the sudden sending security codes to that unaccessible account to access facebook. . .they’ve never sent security codes to me before. .

does anyone have any ideas or clues to revive old google accounts?

Gittyup May 25, 2019 at 2:10 PM

If you figure it out, let me know. I have one I created in 2012 that I lost control of and I’ve gone through all the protocols to recover the account multiple times. But, like you I no longer have access to the address that was used to establish the google account, an old IP provider address. They have lengthy support instructions for recovering accounts which it sounds like you have tried.

I can answer all the questions satisfactorily, but then they send the security code to get back into the google account to the old IP address. I couldn’t find any way to retrieve that security code. I did (I think it was called) file a Support Ticket. They didn’t have enough information from me to prove to them that it was my account so they would not assist me further. I asked them if it was inactive, when would they close it and they said something like “maybe never.”

So, it’s possible someone is using it under my name and just changed the password so I couldn’t get in. I think the next step was taking legal action or filing some legal document with google and I really can’t remember if I did that, but I certainly haven’t heard anything back from them if I did, It is a security dilemma. All I can do is to tell people I email with to block the address if they get mail from it because I no longer have control of the account.

Shasta Daisy May 25, 2019 at 7:14 PM

Do you have two-step authentication?
They will text you a security code.
Also, I believe you have 30 days to retrieve a deleted account.
Mac or PC?

We should talk.

apollo idol prudence May 26, 2019 at 9:12 AM

Gittyup – thank you for the response (as well you too Shasta); Deciding to move on and not let it gnaw at my soul. 17 ofLost emails, lost writings, passwords etc. Building up from new. This gives me a grand opportunity of learning about internet security and backup and digital/ Internet health. As well, it gives me an opportunity to learn how to let things go. As some would say, “the serenity to accept the things I cannot change”. A learning process indeed, but again, trying to turn negatives into positives. Again, thank you

Gittyup May 26, 2019 at 1:59 PM

In some ways it is a fresh start, but still hope you didn’t lose anything important.

Gittyup May 26, 2019 at 2:13 PM

I’d recommend Two-step Verification, also. You can set it up by going to your Account settings for which a link is usually displayed on the same drop-down menu you use in Gmail to sign out. It does seem strange though that your Facebook account is giving you a problem, also. Could the account have been hacked?

Mary Fouts May 25, 2019 at 3:21 PM

Barnes and Noble: Jim stopped by today and purchased a few things. SF Chron also had a nice write-up about the store in today’s print newspaper.

It’s a newer concept store, about half the size of ‘regular’ BN stores, with a focus on books. (Yeah!) Jim really liked the store, very busy. Staff very helpful and said they will be getting additional inventory in, including in their audiobook area.

I so hope the store is successful. Oh, and no parking problems as I’ve heard others express concern about.

shibainu May 25, 2019 at 9:35 PM

Hello mayor,
Could you help alert drivers not to leave the dog in the car as it’s getting hotter?
I saw a dog in a dark car at the new Veranda mall in Concord.
The security guard told me there are multiple dogs in the car at the same time that he has to keep an eye on.
It was 75ish degrees outside but the sunshine was strong. It got very hot in the car.
The dog owner came out of the store after we found his number and called him, he didn’t even check his panting dog and yelled at me saying “don’t make it a big deal, it’s not even 100 degrees!” and went back to the store. It can be 100degrees in 10 minutes…

Free Clean Native Soil: In the process of installing a new open trench waste line, we are abandoning a good portion of the old line route and trenching a new line route. From the area we need to backfill with gravel, we’ll have about 10 yards of clean, native soil left over. Its been under patio/driveway concrete and in excellent condition. South PH soil is a bit clay-ish in content.

We will probably have about 10 yards of excess soil. If anyone would like some or all of it, it is free (you haul) and will be available for pick up either the end of this week, or sometime next week. I’d rather someone(s) use it, then having it hauled to the landfill. I unfortunately do not have a use for it in my gardens.

If interested, I can be reached at cell/text 510-421-5457 or Thanks!

North American B-25H Mitchell from Collings Foundation is flying out of Livermore airport this weekend, flying up San Ramon valley around Mt. Diablo and over Clayton. Schedule puts them at Buchanan Field June 6th thru 9th.,-121.95/10

Saw the B-17 fly over house this morning and the B-24 about an hour later, the sound of those radials is unmistakable. Love it. hope the hear the Packard Merlin and Allison when they’re here first weekend on June.

Atticus Thraxx May 27, 2019 at 4:53 PM

You guys might be right. And if you are, I agree with S. But I’m always a little leery of using the military for correcting social problems. Whether it’s race or integrating women into combat roles clumsily, different religions, transgenders or just motivating so far un-motivatable young people, it exists for war fighting and war fighting only. Constitutionally and practically. So anything that detracts or uses resources that could be better used preparing these young men and women for getting to a combat theater fastest, with the mostest and dominating that theater with a combined arms doctrine should be discarded with distaste. As I once heard and never forgot, ‘Abhorring war is no good reason for not being good at it’. Couldn’t tell you who said it though.

Cowellian May 29, 2019 at 2:54 PM

I never went to Vietnam, but I did serve during the Vietnam era. I wasn’t drafted, but I knew a lot of men who were. And I have always had the highest regard for anyone who served honorably. Nevertheless, I do not like the idea of having a standing draft. As far as I’m concerned, draft registration is essential, but an actual draft should be reserved for emergencies. I believe our military is most effective when it is a volunteer organization. And I also believe that honorable military service should be an expedited path to citizenship, when needed.

Kentucky Derby May 28, 2019 at 7:43 AM

I think giving birth should be mandatory for men. The key to loving fatherhood.

Jojo Potato May 28, 2019 at 12:38 PM

Facebook raises pay for employees that screen hate speech because of the increase in volume and intensity. From Advertising Age:

Facebook recently raised the pay from about $15 to up to $22 depending on the region the staff works. It also requires a mental health specialist to be on call for all shifts.

This intenernet thing is really great, yes?

Atticus Thraxx May 28, 2019 at 7:50 PM

The King James Bible has 787,187 words. I got curious and looked it up. Now you guys know too.

Kentucky Derby May 29, 2019 at 2:27 PM

I’m not an American male, but I don’t believe every American male should serve anymore than I believe every kid should go to college, every man and woman should marry, every person should become a homeowner, and every woman should have children. Different strokes for different folks. Not everyone is cut out for military service. The last thing this country needs is someone in combat who can’t “cut it.”

That being said… thank you for serving.

Antler May 30, 2019 at 2:45 AM

Atticus, re Mochii’s…… Is that Mochi’s, the artisan ice cream makers? I only know about the one in Vacaville (and someone told me there is another in Napa?)
Beware! My next volleys are the Florentine Egg Benedict at Min’s Kitchen and anything at all from the new Catfish Grill (Orchards Shopping Center, corner Oak Grove and Ygnacio Valley Roads).

Janis is now the spokesperson for Caltrans District 4. We hope to have her back on Claycord one day soon, but until then, we appreciate all she brought to the site and wish her luck at Caltrans. She’s a wonderful person.

Antler May 25, 2019 at 2:55 PM

Yes, Janis surely IS a wonderful person through and through! And she has massive communication and reporting skills!

Silva May 26, 2019 at 9:03 PM

How are you doing, Antler?

Antler May 26, 2019 at 10:45 PM

You are so kind to ask about my erstwhile puny self!
She walks! She drives! She gardens just a little bit! And she served homemade soup tonight!
But she still does not full balance skills (broken leg/pin surgery side still has a wishy-washy ankle joint) , so physical therapy sessions continue.
You as stalwart as ever, I hope?
And I also wonder how a certain Yolo County Kid is doing. Personally, I don’t see how he could bear to move that far away from the apple fritters at King’s Doughnuts, but……….

Atticus Thraxx May 27, 2019 at 8:10 AM

How sweet of you to inquire. True I was lured away from King’s but in my defense it was in pursuit of Mochii. If you don’t know what that is, like I didn’t a year ago, forget I said anything. You’ll gain ten pounds just thinking about them.
I have a suggestion once your ankle is stable. Get someone to show you proper technique for squats. There doesn’t have to be any weight or even a bar I suppose. Technique is everything though, you can do more damage than good. But if you can work them into a leg routine the list of benefits is as long as my arm. And this is important…never skip leg day!
The city I live in is a good bit smaller than Concord and while it has frayed some, they have somehow managed to keep the roads in good if not great shape. Point is, it can be done, and it is getting done. But not in Concord.
Cooking up a pot of pork chilli verde with black beans, some baseball on the radio and Brian Greene’s ‘The Elegant Universe’ in a lounge chair, yup life is good.
All thanks to the sacrifice of those who served, fought and died in our name. Too many to name them all, but in particular 1st Sergeant Emilio Piaz. He didn’t die in combat, I think death was afraid of him. But he must’ve had his back turned as he did die among family 10 years ago or so. Point being is he was a mentor to a young, dumb NCO and I learned more from that man about soldiering, about fitness, marksmanship and even reading a map in the dark in a downpour than all other sources combined. I learned about honor, moral courage and how to get calm and quiet when everyone else is losing their sh*t. In a just world he would have gotten professor pay instead of soldier pay. But we all know it’s not a just world. As top would have said, “Yeah, but it’s our job to make it just”. Fillipino-American badass. Gets me emotional thinking about him.

Silva May 27, 2019 at 6:09 PM

That is FANTASTIC progress! I’m so pleased to hear those great milestones are in the rearview mirror!!! You are amazing. What great news. I’m still here and doing fine! Smiling now.😊

Original G May 27, 2019 at 11:42 AM

Wondered what our country would be like if there were 2 years mandatory military service. If for no other reason than allowing our next generation exposure to people like your 1st Sergeant and other real life positive role models, like him.

Silva May 28, 2019 at 6:58 AM

Antler May 28, 2019 at 10:44 AM

Great to hear you are fine and settling in so well!
However! Re the squats exercising:
I used to garden for hours at a time squatting and moving on tippytoes. But now I am (quite surprisingly to myself) old, senior, elderly, ANCIENT…as in, you are younger than my youngest child, and SHE already qualifies for the movie ticket discount! So unless your goal is to make money producing the commercials for my “Help!!! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!!!” routine, just let’s drop that whole subject, kiddo!
Cheers, and it is great you are still “visiting” us!

Kirkwood May 27, 2019 at 2:29 PM

I’ve always believed that military (or some other gov’t service) should be mandatory for every American male. It allows some growing up time and getting along with multiple personality types. Also the military can financially assist with college and teach saleable job skills.

Jojo Potato May 28, 2019 at 9:36 AM

It sounds like a good idea but I’m afraid that rich people would figure out a way to buy their way out of it so it would end up more like a traditional military draft. That would be sad.

S May 27, 2019 at 3:24 PM

women need the same… should be mandatory for females just the same…

Kirkwood May 29, 2019 at 11:42 AM

It works in Israel.

Atticus Thraxx May 29, 2019 at 1:07 PM

Truth. The IDF is probably the most battle tested fighting force on the planet too. But let’s take a look at why conscription works there with little or no fall-off in combat effectiveness.
First, the relative size of the population. An all volunteer force of only males 17-30 would leave them unable to defend the three fronts (borders) they need to defend. It’s a numbers game. Total miles you need to defend, in depth, divided by number of soldiers you can field. Second, it’s a homogeneous population, almost entirely Jewish. Their faith, education and military service are bound all together, each inseparable from the others. Unit cohesion is built right in. We can’t get two people to agree on what color the sky is on a given day.
And third, unlike the U.S.,Israel absolutely cannot lose a war. They would cease to exist. We have two great oceans as geo-political buffers. Their enemies are camped right at their doorstep. Can smell their breath they’re so close. Changes the strategic approach drastically.
But what the heck do I know? I just spent my lunch hour making a point that didn’t really need to be made. At least by me.

Kirkwood May 30, 2019 at 10:25 AM

@Thraxx – Good insight. My statement didn’t involve deep thought.
