The Water Cooler – Going Out to Eat

March 14, 2019 12:00 pm · 71 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday in the noon hour.

If you had to go out to eat dinner at any restaurant in Claycord, where would you go?

Talk about it….

Simonpure March 14, 2019 at 12:08 PM

Not really classified as a restaurant but they do have limited seating. Luigi’s Italian Delicatessen stands out for me. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it. I see a Luigi Boy in my near future.

Bishop Estates March 14, 2019 at 1:22 PM

Love Luigi’s!! Now I want a sandwich……

Jan Cope March 14, 2019 at 12:09 PM

Naan and Curry

Pat March 14, 2019 at 10:02 PM

I love chicken, vegetables, rice.. but am sort of picky… I hear so many good things about that place… Serious question for any fan of that restaurant.. What should I order?

FedUp March 15, 2019 at 9:53 AM

Sasa in Walnut Creek. I NEVER eat Japanese food, but I have yet to eat anything bad at Sasa. However, it is expensive.

Bad Nombre March 15, 2019 at 1:57 PM

Pat, go for the Cholai Chicken!

S March 14, 2019 at 12:11 PM

kinda’ hesitant to go anywhere right now with all the resent health closures…

Chicken Little March 14, 2019 at 12:13 PM

Brasas do Brazil, hands-down. I live that place.

Chicken Little March 14, 2019 at 2:33 PM

I meant I LOVE that place. Stupid phone.

AnonZ March 14, 2019 at 12:20 PM

Sauced. Recently went for the first time and it was DELISH.

For a less expensive choice: Jack’s Urban Eats.

Bob Foo March 14, 2019 at 12:56 PM

If you’re talking about Urban Plates in downtown Pleasant Hill, it’s not associated with Jack’s. They’re just neighbors.

Rollo Tomasi March 14, 2019 at 2:40 PM

Jack’s Urban Eats is in the Shadelands area of Walnut Creek

Bob Foo March 14, 2019 at 8:59 PM

Ah, my mistake.

AnonZ March 15, 2019 at 5:16 AM

That’s the one Rollo. We discovered them in Davis and I love that they finally brought one to our area.

martinezmike March 14, 2019 at 12:28 PM

DJ’s Bistro. concord.

Pyrrhus March 14, 2019 at 1:24 PM

That’s a really good pick. Reminds me of my grandmother’s cooking.

I also really like Babushka in Walnut Creek. Their borscht also reminds me of my grandmother’s.

marinemom March 14, 2019 at 12:44 PM

La Veranda in Clayton

amieollie March 14, 2019 at 7:30 PM

Overpriced swill. Won’t darken that door again.

Paladin March 14, 2019 at 1:18 PM

Moresi’s in Clayton

DD March 14, 2019 at 1:36 PM

Wait for it…………….
Olive Garden!

Walnut Creek Yacht Club’s the go to.

XdemXlib March 14, 2019 at 1:38 PM

Olive Garden!
oh, that’s right, they’re not here yet!

Doh March 14, 2019 at 1:38 PM

It depends on what I crave to eat at the moment and the occasion. I love the variety of cuisines in this area.

anotheranon March 14, 2019 at 1:39 PM

Where I’d go depends on what kind of food I’m looking for.
For Italian, Pasta Primavera in Concord, for their pasta puttanesca, or La Veranda in Clayton for their pasta carbonara, also good happy hour, 4-6pm, seven days a week.

BBQ, Back 40 in Pleasant Hill, hands down.

Pizza, Blaze in Concord, all the toppings you want for one price.

Chinese, New Lim’s Garden in Concord.

Mexican, La Tapatia in Concord, very good chilies rellenos

French, used to be LaSen, but since they moved to Walnut Creek, haven’t found a replacement.

Pat March 14, 2019 at 10:05 PM

Hey! You and I seem to have the same taste buds.. What should I order at Lim’s?

Mmmmmm March 14, 2019 at 11:22 PM

I think you should know …NEW LIMS GARDEN has been shut down by the Health Department Inspectors more than once. Look it up.

AnonZ March 15, 2019 at 5:21 AM

Just don’t!! We used to love Lim’s about 18-20 years ago. They began to go downhill and we stopped going. I’m not surprised they are closed all the time for various health dept offenses.

Reality says... March 14, 2019 at 1:50 PM

Can someone please tell me what the fascination is with Golden Corral?

Passed by that place last weekend and the line was probably 30+ deep with people waiting in the rain.

30 people + waiting in the rain + cafeteria style seating + out of control kids (and adults) dipping their Jimmy Dean sausage fingers in the food = does not compute!

Bob Foo March 14, 2019 at 3:12 PM

It’s cheap. That’s enough for some people.

Kirkwood March 14, 2019 at 3:34 PM

Because it’s new, and they advertise heavily. People don’t yet realize that what ends up on their plates doesn’t look like what they see in the commercials.
Remember, when Claim Jumper opened they were packed all day for a year.

Hmm March 14, 2019 at 5:32 PM

No idea, I gave it a try and was not impressed at all with any of it.

Everything was bland, I guess it’s the whole it’s something new. It will pass.

Derb March 14, 2019 at 5:42 PM

@Reality says…
I believe the long line of people you saw at Golden Corral last week were people wanting to get a job there.

Shoulda Coulda March 14, 2019 at 1:51 PM

Tugboat Fish & Chips in Pleasant Hill.
Best fish & chips in the Claycord area.

Simonpure March 14, 2019 at 2:27 PM

Thanks for that. Didn’t know there was a good fish & chip place around here. Been going into Antioch.

Fyi March 14, 2019 at 2:45 PM

Not tugboat now called Jimmy’s. Try California fish grill, really good.

Shoulda Coulda March 14, 2019 at 10:02 PM

It’s still Tugboat Fish & Chips.
Some folks call it Johnnie’s Tugboat F&C.
Johnnie (not Jimmie) owns the place.
He’s a very nice guy who is proud of
the quality food he makes.

Pat March 14, 2019 at 10:15 PM

Mona’s (Burgers) on Clayton Road (I’m not sure about the other locations though) has very good fish ‘n chips. Not kidding. I’ve had it a few times.. I’ve been told it’s black cod which really isn’t part of the cod family from what I understand but we’ve been quite happy both times my partner and I have had it. Give it a try… see what you think!

Snow white March 14, 2019 at 11:06 PM

What’s up with all the love for CA fish grill? Great concept and reasonably priced (not for long) but you people need to get out more often.
Why are they still using those fries? Horrible choice to use in a seafood establishment. Why in the world are they putting the fish on top of those said horrible chips. Anyone with half a brain would use a steak type chip and not place the fish on the chips. I like greasy food too but who wants soggy chips?
Just an FYI get it while you can. It won’t be there in a few years

Campdakota March 15, 2019 at 7:30 AM

I agree! Tugboat is the absolute best! CA Fish Grill is 2nd.

Campdakota March 15, 2019 at 7:37 AM

I agree! Tugboat is the absolute best! CA Fish Grill is okay… don’t like their fries & kale slaw though. Kinder’s is good. I’m kinda tired of our choices close by.

Dr. Jellyfinger March 15, 2019 at 9:04 AM

Kinder’s is OK… but their ribs are pathetic compared to Back Forty’s. Kinder’s ribs are like bones with a dried out strip of pork rind attached, while Back Forty’s ribs are thick, meaty & moist… bbq sauce is good too, but they don’t take any time to bake the sauce onto the rib… they just kinda slather it on & serve it wet. It’s still the best around tho.

After reading all these post about “Dirty Dining” I’m not hungry!

Mountainside Jay March 14, 2019 at 3:48 PM

I’m a big fan of the spicy fried chicken at Von’s

Christian March 14, 2019 at 3:49 PM

In Claycord, Hanabi Sushi. I can’t get enough sushi.

BOB March 14, 2019 at 3:57 PM

I have to wonder. I have had some of the worst meal I was ever served at some of the places named.

Snow white March 15, 2019 at 9:58 PM

Bob is the only normal one here

Anon61 March 14, 2019 at 4:31 PM

Fiore’s in Concord. Fabulous!

Pat March 14, 2019 at 10:16 PM

Suggest a plate or 2? I thank you in advance. 🙂

linnie March 15, 2019 at 12:00 PM

@Pat – get the lamb shank! DELICIOUS!!

Dr. Jellyfinger March 14, 2019 at 5:05 PM

Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Walnut Creek.

Shoulda Coulda March 15, 2019 at 12:55 PM

@ Dr. Jellyfinger

I’d go to Ruth’s Chris if I could get someone
to co-sign to help me purchase a baked potato.

Snow white March 15, 2019 at 10:08 PM

This is funny. Ruth is garbage. You can get better meat at Costco and use a Weber with charcoal. Btw I couldn’t care less about the price as opposed to shoulda coulda get a job other than Uber.

Dr. Jellyfinger March 15, 2019 at 11:31 PM

The question was:

“If you had to go out to eat dinner at any restaurant in Claycord, where would you go?”

Not “If you had to go out to eat dinner at any restaurant in Claycord, and pay for it yourself…where would you go?

If I had to pay for it I’d probably go to Pavilion Bar & Grill… Foods pretty good and not too expensive.

Ruth’s Chris has gotta be the most expensive place in town!
I’ve never even been there…. but it looks nice online.

ConCabCathy March 14, 2019 at 5:23 PM

I found a gem last month In WC named California Fish Grill. Casual, moderately priced and delicious!!! I love seafood but can’t afford Scott’s so this is my new go-to spot.

Gititogether March 14, 2019 at 6:06 PM

DJ’s Bistro…Yan’s also good (fur lunch special)…Cinco de Mayo (Martinez)

Dennis March 14, 2019 at 6:11 PM

If it’s gonna be fast food the a trip to the Philly Cheese Steak shop works for me. Maybe Genova’s deli on Treat. Love the smell of that place.

CampDakota March 15, 2019 at 10:43 AM

Genova’s Is hit or miss – especially when they’re busy at lunch time. Sometimes the rolls are stale, sometimes grandmother is “helping”. Gets very crowded with help behind deli counter & everyone is in each other’s way. Morucci’s is consistently great!

mike favar March 14, 2019 at 6:45 PM

I second both La Plaza and Back Forty Texas BBQ!

Russ March 14, 2019 at 9:32 PM

Cowellian’s Surf and Turf

Cowellian March 14, 2019 at 10:09 PM

Sure thing! Y’all come on down for some hot dogs and tunafish.

MattfromConcord March 14, 2019 at 9:47 PM

I hear MoMo’s is pretty good.

AnonZ March 15, 2019 at 5:24 AM

I heard they just shut their doors and closed up.

MattfromConcord March 14, 2019 at 9:48 PM

Momoyama – best sushi around.

The Fearless Spectator March 14, 2019 at 10:07 PM

Massimo in Walnut Creek. Everyone in your party can order something completely different and each meal will be great. And try the Waldorf Salad.

DaveT March 15, 2019 at 2:01 AM

Postino in Lafayette is the best fine dining establishment around.

chuckie the troll March 15, 2019 at 8:45 AM

For Chinese, The Chinese Kitchen on Clayton Road. Been going there for over 25 years. Not fancy, and a lot of people do take-out, but excellent food. Great lunch specials and the best Hot and Sour Soup. (My grandmother was a Missionary to the Chinese community so I grew up going to restaurants where we were the only white customers.)

For a mid-price nice meal, Fiore (near K-Mart) is a good bet.

For a special occasion, Prima in W.C.

Mary M. H March 15, 2019 at 9:47 AM

-Himalayan Cuisine on Willow Pass within Todos Santos. This is my happy place.

-Yalla Mediterranean in Pleasant Hill. Nice healthy alternative to grab a bite to eat before a movie.

-Sauced BBQ & Spirits in Walnut Creek. Closest thing I’ll get in the area to decent real BBQ. They out corn pieces in their corn bread which is a little suss but their meat is amazing and I’m in love with their Hippy Chick salad. Also get the Cucumber Cooler if you like cocktails.

-Sabores Del Sur in Walnut Creek. Latin American restaurant with incredible dishes. Chef Guisell is a sweetheart.

anon March 15, 2019 at 10:12 AM

My favorite BBQ place is Back Forty. They have the best pork ribs I’ve ever tasted-although they are smaller than they used to be.

I’ve been wanting to try DJ’s Bistro and after seeing the good reviews I’ll make it a priority.

Kitty March 15, 2019 at 3:16 PM

We need some cultural diversity in our restaurant choices in Claycord, based on these responses.
