The Water Cooler – The Best Movie Theater In Contra Costa County

March 13, 2019 12:00 pm · 30 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday in the noon hour.

In your opinion, what’s the best movie theater in Contra Costa County?

Talk about it….

Any of them are great. Movie theaters are one of the last places which hire local teenagers At minimum wage to build a work history. Also teaches them how to work
Most entry level jobs are now done by illegal aliens for less than minimum wage, with no worker protections, or taxes. Lowering the floor for all of us

OverWhelmed March 14, 2019 at 12:37 AM

What entry level job pays illegals less than minimum wage?

Dawg March 13, 2019 at 12:11 PM

Without a doubt, the Orinda. Nothing in CC County comes close to the magnificent architecture.

I’m with you Dawg. The Orinda theatre has
a great foreign film series too. Saw a very
good Korean detective movie there last night.
They will validate your parking garage ticket
so parking is free. Just wish they’d put real butter
on the popcorn and not that mystery oil topping
they serve.

Derb March 13, 2019 at 1:37 PM

I totally agree. We LOVE going to the Orinda Theater.

Shoulda, I haven’t been to the Orinda theater in over 15 years but they told me back then that they weren’t allowed to pop their own corn because it would require a vent to be built up through the ceiling (two stories). So they got their popcorn popped from the Park theater in Lafayette. The Park was using real butter at that time.

Architecture is good but one thing I like was when stadium seating went into theaters. I went to many foreign and indie movies at the Park but they could be easily spoiled if someone tall sat in front of you because the floor was almost flat rather than graduated.

My favorite theater is my home one. It has a pause button. 😉

Shoulda Coulda -Is that Korean movie dubbed or sub-titled? The theater’s web site preview was not.

Shoulda Coulda March 14, 2019 at 11:09 AM

The Korean movie is subtitled.

The new Veranda theater in Concord is great.

Nopeee March 13, 2019 at 5:50 PM

That is one of the worst theaters I’ve been to in CC. Such a stupid idea to have people order food at their seat and have it delivered WHILE the movie is playing. Servers are walking in front of you throughout the movie, you hear whispering, and they also can’t dim the lights all the way for safety reasons since there are so many people walking around. How lazy are people that they can’t just get their own food?

Brenden. Location and parking is not great, but the seats themselves and the sound system are top notch.

Christopher Callaghan March 15, 2019 at 11:31 AM

My favorite as well
I love the recliner seats, so comfy.
The little cafe has fantastic burgers and good beer too.
Agreed, they could use more parking.

Gititogether March 13, 2019 at 1:22 PM

Rheem, Orinda, Stadium all share; easy, free, safe parking….courteous staff and fellow patrons…relatively reasonable pricing…a sense of community.

El Rey Theater on North Main Street. Candy shop right next door.

The Cascade Theatre up in Redding is it’s exact twin. Check it out.

Concordejet March 13, 2019 at 2:38 PM

I did not even know that Orinda have great theater add to that a foreign film two thumbs up.

I enjoy brendon theater because it walking distant to my condo and it right there all in your backyard.

the new verenda theater not so public transpiration friendly unless if it weekends bus 320 makes it convince. on weekdays bus 91 your best bet.

One that I can afford and have decent parking.

Shoulda Coulda March 13, 2019 at 6:01 PM

Contra Costa Stadium Cinema in Martinez
has $5 Tuesday’s. All movies are only $5.
They also have the new reclining seats.
Plenty of parking there or across the street.

ConcordRez March 13, 2019 at 11:30 PM

If Martinez doesn’t have the film you want on $5 Tuesday, try Cinemark PH. I think their TU price is $5.75

PO'd March 13, 2019 at 4:15 PM

Orinda. After the re-model some years back, they brought the rocking seats in from the Rheem, and that put it over the top.

The Solano Drive In. One of only a few left in the country.

jon s March 13, 2019 at 6:09 PM

The Dome theatre was the best.

Double Dzzz March 13, 2019 at 7:03 PM

OH the old Showcase theater in Concord. I think I saw Pee Wee Herman there ! HA !

Justifiable Languor March 14, 2019 at 7:18 AM

That is a grand idea. Bring back the theater in Todos Santos. Concord needs an art theater. The venue could change nightly. Spanish movie night, art movie Sunday. Disney matinee. We could probably do without the porn though.

Mother of Dragons March 13, 2019 at 7:53 PM

I like XD theater in Pleasant Hill. We have the Cinemark app so the price is right! Can’t beat the seating and they serve alcohol now too. Lots of parking, places to eat. Wouldn’t go anywhere else 🙂

ConcordRez March 13, 2019 at 11:25 PM

When the Dome closed, 100 of us started Mt. Shadow Film Society. We rent a large room at the downtown Walnut Creek library to show independent and international films. We now have over 300 members. The majority of the films are not shown on this side of the tunnel, tho our feature this month has been shown commercially here. We even have our own short-film contest, welcoming film-makers from around the world to show us their films, talk to us about them in person, and compete for a monetary prize. We do accept walk-ins on a first-come standby basis. We are a non-profit organization.

The Dome was always my fav. I still have fond memories of the theater at Sun Valley Mall (ice rink too).

Agree with Nopeee: Only been to Veranda once and hated it.

Dave March 14, 2019 at 6:55 AM

Delta Theater in Brentwood. 5$ everyday

Nunya March 14, 2019 at 3:45 PM

if i list it hear everyone will go to it and it will become the worst

Sierra March 14, 2019 at 5:39 PM

The Century Blackhawk Plaza Movie Theater. Best seats and popcorn.

JustMe March 15, 2019 at 11:30 AM

I go to movies every week and have been to all the local theaters and many theaters outside the area.

The Century in Pleasant Hill, is the best among the bunch in terms of technology, cleanliness, pricing, food, number of theaters/movies offered, and seating. All seats are stadium seating in leather chairs that have foot rests that you can raise/lower. Some seats have seat warmers. It underwent renovations about a year ago. All the seats, carpets, screens, sound and projection are brand new. The bathrooms are clean and plentiful. You can sign up for weekly discounts online, and purchase tickets online or through their mobile app. All seating is now assigned at time of purchase. In the last year they added Pizza Hut pizza, cookies, and beer/wine. If you sign up for their movie club, there’s additional benefits, and discounts.
