BART Schedule Changes, Early Bird Bus Service Begin Today

BART began offering its new Early Bird Express bus service at 4 a.m. today to help commuters who will be affected by the later weekday start of the transit system to accommodate the seismic retrofit of the Transbay Tube.

BART trains will begin running around 5 a.m., an hour later than normal, starting today. The change will last for the duration of the 3.5-year-long retrofit project.

As a result, the Early Bird Express will establish 15 new bus lines to run between 3:50 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. in both directions between stops. It will consist of seven transbay routes, five East Bay routes, two San Francisco/Peninsula routes and one Contra Costa County route, and serve 21 BART stations and the temporary Transbay Terminal in San Francisco.

Eight Bay Area bus agencies will operate the network, and fares will be the same or less than the equivalent trip on BART, according to the transit agency. Riders can pay with either cash or a Clipper card. Clipper card payments must be made with money added as cash value to the card; riders cannot pay using a Clipper purse loaded with High Value Discount (HVD) tickets.

Because BART stations won’t open until 5 a.m., current parking payment methods will not be available for Early Bird Express riders. Instead, BART will offer three options for riders who wish to pay for parking between
3:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.: using a smartphone and an app; a computer, internet connection and printer; or purchasing parking passes in advance from a customer service window.

According to BART, more than 2,400 of the 2,900 riders who typically begin their trips between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. originate in the East Bay, and 64 percent disembark at downtown San Francisco stations.

BART says the retrofit work will be done in small sections starting at 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and ending at 5 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Serious question… if BART needed an extra hour why couldn’t they close at 11pm instead of midnight?

Can Bart run 24/7 like other train systems in other major cities/areas? Seems like a major flaw not running 24/7 …. you don’t have to run every train in between 1 AM to 5 AM but you should at least have a couple going. My reasoning is that not having it run 24 seven is bad for commerce and people getting in from late flights internationally/domestically. Maybe you guys can run it 24 seven Fridays and Saturdays that might help generate more revenue for the nightlife around the bay

They cant run 24/7 because their old system cant support it as they have to do maintenance at nights when the trains are not running. They are not as capable as other transit agencies that can and do run 24/7.

I enjoy BART recommending to passengers from Orinda that they walk for 225 minutes to 20th & Broadway or 199 minutes to MacArthur.

Commute sucked this morning. First train, packed. Waited for next train and it wasn’t as packed but still had to stand. They need to run more trains at shorter intervals or start work earlier and go back to old schedule. This is stupid!!!
