Two Concord restaurants were recently closed after inspectors from the Contra Costa County Department of Environmental Health say they found the following:

VEGGIE TODAY:

  • Kitchen hand sink was blocked by cart and there was no soap in dispenser.
  • 1 live adult cockroach on wall behind the 3-door prep refrigerator next to the cook line.
  • 1 dead juvenile cockroach on outlet box next to food preparation sink.
  • 10+ live cockroaches of various life stages harboring under residential freezer near dish machine and walk-in
    refrigerator.
  • Napkins and other utensils and food service equipment are stored in employee restroom.

  • 1 live nymph cockroach on the wall next to the rice cookers.
  • 1 live cockroach on the wall behind the pipe above the kitchen hand sink.
  • 1 live cockroach on the ceiling above the kitchen hand sink.
  • 1 live cockroach with an egg case attached on top of the mechanical dishwasher.
  • Cockroach fecal matter in the following areas:
    – wall between the 3 compartment sink and kitchen hand sink
    – wall next to 1 door refrigerator leading to the food pantry (behind the orange extension cord)

It’s really great that these notices are posted.

Sure makes one think to check the Dirty Dining website before going out to eat.

RE-opened and likely empty of customers. I know that rodents populations are running higher than usual, but when it’s pointed out that the problems are one of inattention to cleaning the kitchen, than that goes to the owner/manager for not policing that activity. Not Acceptable. They’re only now cleaning the kitchen because they got caught.

Get the Food Inspector app, you will never want to eat again

Bummed about Mai Thai – loved that place and was just recommending it to a friend. Well, no more, I guess. How can you trust a place after this? Sad.

Are insects and rodent droppings vegan?

Eastbay Babe December 13, 2018 - 1:35 PM - 1:35 PM

Insects are Protein not sure about what category rodent droppings belong to.

Relax folks. All of us have been enjoying a spritz of rat and roach droppings for decades with little to no ill effects. There was a guy with a TV show that covered restaurants. He’d show the grossest things going on in commercial kitchens and pantries. We have all enjoyed and survived the food. The TV show guy eventually killed himself and so perhaps a diet of continuous restaurant food gets to you…

Little kids crawl around on the floor, pick things up all the time, and put their fingers and whatever they find in their mouths. Do they get sick from this?

Stopped eating at Mai Thai after watching the hostess clean the bathroom, then package up our food to go without washing her hands. This doesn’t surprise me at all.

Just deleted their phone number.
We liked to eat and pick up there but it will be extremely difficult to convince me that they will see what they have not seen (ignored) until the inspection; thi goes beyond being able to see.

Very sorry to hear this about Mai Thai. They WERE our go to place for Thai, even with the “Provisional Pass” rating posted at their location. I erroneously thought a provisional pass might make them try harder. Guess not. Rats/rodents I can more easily forgive, but not (ever, ever, ever) cockroaches. That’s just GROSS.

I am totally disgusted with Veggie Today. The Inspector’s comment of “Napkins and other utensils and food service equipment are stored in employee restroom.” shows a total lack of concern for their customers. I’ve never eaten there, and now I never will. I wish they would publish the owner’s names so I can avoid any other restaurants that they might own or open in the future. They are repulsive!

Heartbroken December 13, 2018 - 10:41 PM - 10:41 PM

MaiThai is the only place we really frequent on Clayton rd. We love it. I’m so soo so bummed!!!! I can’t go back 😭

Jack's Fan December 13, 2018 - 11:58 PM - 11:58 PM

Agreed. Such a bummer! Feeling awful I fed my family this so many times. I’m finding our new favorite places are quick serve restaurants where you can see the food stations and prep as you wait. Not 100% guaranteed to be safe, but a lot harder to hide in those establishments.

Silva December 14, 2018 - 4:11 AM - 4:11 AM

If y’all need a new local restaurant you should give Momo N Curry a try. It’s wonderful! It’s in the Dunkin Donuts center where Scouser’s used to be.

Yuri December 14, 2018 - 7:48 AM - 7:48 AM

The disrespect exhibited by these establishments to its patrons is astounding. They’re no longer worthy of anyone’s business.
