The city of Walnut Creek is looking for volunteer drivers and passenger assistants for its Senior Mini Bus, which offers more than 3,000 rides per year.

The bus transports seniors to activities such as doctors’ appointments, grocery shopping and social events. Volunteers are sought for a regularly scheduled weekday shift from either 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., or 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Substitute drivers also are needed to fill in when regularly scheduled drivers are unavailable.

For more information about volunteering, contact Stacy Miller at smiller@walnut-creek.org or (925) 943-5899 ext. 2123.

The wealthy city of Walnut Creek wants “volunteers” to work half shifts to cover a regular 8 hour workday with a 30 min lunch? Wouldn’t they want to post a job opening for a full-time city position with benefits? And then select from a pool of qualified applicants? Or do they have such low regard for the task of shuttling seniors to the doctor or to acquire food that they think volunteers can handle it? There may be some city employees making a lot of money and offering little value in return. They may want to consider taking that money to hire shuttle drivers, or train THEM to drive the shuttle bus.

Is a class B license required? How is liability handled?

I also question this. I’ve worker for the city of Walnut Creek doing just this. It’s great and rewarding, but it takes a certain person to do this kind of work, along with training and understanding of everything involdlved. This is more important than volunteer, someone needs some pay for this line of work. Homecare providers do this same thing, for minimum wages or a little above and they even at times abuse hours, clients, and overall doing it for the wrong reasons. I believe in volunteering, but you can pick up some trash off the side of the freeway with maintainece crew with an orange jacket.
