An inmate has been identified following his death at the Martinez Detention Facility, Contra Costa County sheriff’s officials said today.

Karthik Kandaswamy, 26, of San Ramon had been arrested earlier Saturday by San Ramon police on suspicion of battery and resisting arrest.

At 11:27 p.m. Saturday, deputies were alerted to a medical problem in a holding room at the jail.

Deputies found Kandaswamy unresponsive on Saturday around midnight and called jail medical personnel.

Sheriff’s officials said medics and firefighters also were called but Kandaswamy was pronounced dead at the scene following attempts to save his life.

That’s odd, 26 year olds don’t usually die without some external factor.

Yeah…something may have happened during his bout of resisting. Oh well…don’t resist and you wont have that problem.

Sometimes they die of a drug overdose. If he did some drugs before he was arrested, the drugs can take some time to take affect and kill him while he is in jail.

I’m sure there was a factor or two. Caused by his own choices. Are you suggesting a police officer went into his cell and killed him??! 🙄

He was contacted at his place of residence in the court for which he lived. As I understand it, family called for help. Age 25 is a time when any mental health issues can come forward. Battery is a blanket charge and we weren’t there to know the severity. His resisting arrest can be a result of said mental break. He was taken to the hospital first for eval, most likely on a 5150. Perhaps maybe given medication to calm him down prior to booking. Medication could have caused a reaction if he was allergic. Maybe even cardiac arrest. Please Don’t assume the worst of people for which you don’t know the whole story. Prayers are with his family.

Hope this is referred to the Grand Jury.

It will go to the coroner. Wow- the guy dies of -what? drug overdose, and you automatically assume cops were responsible? Why did he resist arrest anyway?

You would be shocked to know the care and treatment inmates get or don’t get in this jail.

I died at that jail, and was revived.

There were 21 witnesses.

Rupf and Livingston buried it.

It was the evening when the jail transferred from Rupf to Livingston, in 2011.
