DMV Announces New Efforts To Reduce Wait Times

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is taking a number of additional actions — including redirecting 240 employees from the DMV headquarters and staff from other state agencies and departments— to combat rising wait times at field offices. Customers have experienced longer-than-expected service times because of increased demand in the federal compliant REAL ID driver license or identification card.

“The DMV is bringing employees from various state agencies and departments to strengthen our hiring surge and help triage the longer lines at our offices,” DMV Director Jean Shiomoto said. “This year we have already hired 500 new employees, added Saturday service at 60 offices and opened offices an hour earlier in the most impacted areas. We expect the additional surge of employees will help further combat these wait times.”

The redirected employees are triaging the lines to ensure customers have the required documents to complete their transaction and get a service number faster. They are also assisting customers with filling out the Electronic Driver License and ID Card Application.

The department is using a variety of additional options to reduce wait times. Some of the timesaving solutions include:

  • Piloting a text notification option. If a customer provides their cell phone number when they check in, they can receive a text message shortly before their service number is called. This provides flexibility so they do not have to wait inside a field office. The DMV is piloting the text notification option in several field offices across the state and working to launch this statewide within the next two weeks.
  • Piloting self-check-in kiosks. Customers with appointments can bypass the “Start Here” window and use a kiosk to instantly receive their service number. This option is being piloted in the South Sacramento field office and the San Jose Driver License Processing Center.
  • Expanding DMV Now Self-Service Terminals: This month, the DMV will add the self-service vehicle registration renewal kiosks to 10 additional field offices. Later this year, the department will expand to 50 additional grocery store locations, bringing the statewide total of DMV Now Self-Service Terminals to 160.
  • Saturday service expansion: The DMV expanded Saturday service to 60 field offices on August 4. Offices are open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Early office hours: The DMV began offering extended hours at 14 field offices on July 16. The offices open at 7 a.m. four days a week. They continue to open at 9 a.m. on Wednesdays and close at 5 p.m. daily.

Lazy employees? That is not the problem, the problem is non English speaking people going to DMV and causing problems, and pissing off the employees having to deal with their inability to speak English.
The problem is not the employees, get a friggin clue dude.

Is the problem the (Real ID Licences) which is not required? Or the tremendous number of illegal aliens applying for Drivers licenses and ID’s in order to receive benefits?

Exactly! The illegals is what is clogging our offices, now our roads, our housing, our schools, our hospitals. It isn’t just the DMV having long wait lines. It’s all the things I stated. This is what happens when a democratic state puts non citizens first. Great job ComiCalifornia.

Kinsey Leaky, I have a passport as well, but when my driver’s license expires in 2020 won’t I have to get a real ID whether I want it or not? They won’t be issuing the old driver’s license anymore. Bringing my passport to the DMV should help speed things up. But passport in hand won’t speed up the long line.

@kinsey… if their job is to work with the public and they get pissed off for having to interact with the people they do then that is a problem.

The problem begins and ends with the people that work at the DMV, from top to bottom. There is no incentive to perform well, no incentive to be quick, no incentive to try and be better… same as most government agencies. They know you have to come, they know you have no other out, they know their jobs are secure so why be bothered by having to try and be efficient?

No it is not their job to try and understand people that don’t speak English which causes huge time wasting.
I worked at a big well known outfit and we had signs posted that said speak English only or take your business elsewhere. And I recently checked and those signs are still up.

You people are Bozos that think it’s DMV employees fault, they sit at a computer and call people up in order and deal with their bs all day long from bringung wrong documents, can’t communicate with employee in English and many illegal bot knowing crap.

How exactly are the employees supposed to work more efficient and faster when dealing with the types of people going in there?

What DMV needs is Spanish/non English speaking and illegals only offices. That will keep all those people together at one location and away from English speaking legal citizen customers and it will flow freely.

Pretty accurate, although I wouldn’t generalize it to “most” government agencies. Even before this self generated “crisis” the DMV staff were indifferent to customer service, arrogant adequately describes the attitude. This attitude of indifference to the public starts at Jerry Brown’s office and flows through the entire staff of DMV.

Last time I was there I overheard two different people (both English speaking white people) go on with their life stories on why they are having trouble registering their vehicles. They always bring their friends because what could be more fun than hanging out at the DMV.

Me I made an appointement, bypassed all the suckers who just show up and was out in less than an hour, started registration on two out of state cars and got my DL.

I always make an appointment, but this last time – there were no appointments available and I wanted the Real ID when my driver’s license birthday renewal came around. A walk-in at Walnut Creek DMV was completed in two hours on a Thursday afternoon. The employees were not lazy-mostly just trying to explain things to people. Sitting and waiting for your number to be called was the hardest part.

People like you who have cold hearts and like to blame other races for why things happen are sad human beings. Without these illegals, you probably wouldn’t have the home you live in, and those nice vegetables you like to eat because we no damn well you would not be working in the fields. So please, stop blaming other humans who are just like you, on problems that have nothing to do with them. Worry about who is going to help rebuild this country the rightful way where we all have equal rights that are fair for all no matter where we come from.

Finally this, after sadists at DMV forced people earlier this Summer to stand out side with NO shade in the hot weather, saw this happen at both Concord and Pittsburg DMV offices on numerous occasions.

Rest assured from forcing people to stand in the hot sun to screwing up the motor voter automatic voter registration NO ONE will be fired.

Think of the political party that has been running this state for decades when you cast your votes for the November election.

It is Time to SEND A MESSAGE to them,
their incompetence and arrogance will no longer be tolerated.

I went in for a RealID on Friday – had an appointment at the Concord location. Had all the documents on the checklist – in/out in 20 minutes. The ladies at the windows were quick, efficient, and super friendly.The check-in process was quick and that employee made sure I had everything I needed BEFORE I waited. Remember – no credit cards. Cash, check, or debit only.
