Stop coming to the ER with non emergency complaints. Your baby with a fever can be controlled with Motrin. Wait for your primary Doctor appointment.

ClayDen October 19, 2018 at 8:33 PM

If you can’t wait for your primary care physician, go to urgent care unless it appears to be life threatening.

Smith October 19, 2018 at 11:06 PM

@TraumaRx Find another profession. You’re obviiusky burnt out on the one you’ve got. When the people you’re supposed to be helping are just an irritation to you, you can’t do them any good.

ConcordKate October 20, 2018 at 10:31 PM

Hey Trauma. I think you only post comments on Claycord to rile people up. Do you even have kids? If not, then shut up.

No more posts about CVCHS and its impending DA investigation? People tired of hearing “I told ya so’s”?

Rollo Tomasi October 20, 2018 at 12:16 AM

I’ve only heard about the investigation of former CVCHS staff being referred to the DA. What’s the school being investigated for?

Former CV Parent October 20, 2018 at 9:40 AM

The County Board of Education voted to continue investigating CVCHS at its meeting last week. It is referring several matters to the DA, including the very high salaries of the Executive Director and his wife. They were each paid more than most school district superintendents in Contra Costa County, and it appears CVCHS engaged in pension spiking with their contracts. Eileen Linzey reported directly to her husband, according to school organization charts.

It also referred Ron Leone’s hiring to the DA as it appears to be an illegal use of charter school funds as a campaign contribution. Leone was hired as a CVCHS assistant superintendent while he was running for county school superintendent and resigned his position with CVCHS after he lost the election. He used his position as assistant superintendent on his ballot statement. The paid position appears to have been created specifically for him, without it ever being posted internally or externally, and without Board approval.

The County staff noted that CVCHS had spent $40,000 on legal fees for a new charter school being formed in Antioch. The CVCHS Board is now working to recover those fees from the Antioch school.

The County staff noted that CVCHS had previously been investigated by an outside firm hired by the County in 2015, yet questionable practices identified in that investigation, such as mis-use of credit cards, continued and were still found to be a problem by the most recent investigation.

In 2017 the CVCHS governing board voted to amend its by-laws in a such a way that it give the Executive Director absolute control over who would be permitted to either run for or be appointed to a seat on the governing board. Shortly afterwards, Karen Sakata, County School Superintendent, informed CVCHS that this put them in violation of their charter. CVCHS now says they are will to work with the County to reform their governance. However, one County board member pointed out that Megan Kommer was recently appointed to an open position on the CVCHS governing board. She called this a “red flag” because Kommer was a governing board member during the time under investigation.

There’s more. Read the County Office of Education staff report. It should be available on the County Office of Ed website. It’s probably an attachment for the agenda to the last Boatd meeting. Or you could do an online search for more info.

Rollo Tomasi October 20, 2018 at 12:19 PM

What a relief! I was worried that the DA was investigating the above average (for California) education being provided to our students, the high test scores, the high participation rate in extra-curricular activities, the opportunities being provided for low achieving students to catch up through Saturday school, etc.

Now I’ll sleep better at night.

mtzman October 20, 2018 at 1:49 PM

The irony is that both Former CV Parent and RT are correct. Yes, the school is being investigated (and there is more there than even the county report referred to) and the guilty parties should rightfully be held accountable, but the school is also doing well in preparing students for the world that lies ahead of them. And for that reason, I do not want to see the school go back to MDUSD, I do not want to see Cheryl Hansen, who has played a part in the chaos that CVCHS has been embroiled in, elected superintendent, and I do want to see CVCHS return to its initial roots and goals, free of the corrupting influence of, well, you know who.

Paraisio Loop, starting from Boundary Oaks. And took a dead end trail…Something Tealeaf I think it was called. Flushed some quail there and doubled back, countless skinks and/or lizards, two flocks(?) of turkey, a couple of bunny rabbits, saw a deer’s rear end disappearing in scrub and the usual bird life. No snakes though. Delightful. Had good company in my son.

Hi, another book report. Last time it was one I bought at World Con, this time it is one that was being given away. The tile starts out interesting then gets long. The Martian Named Smith, Critical Perspectives on Robert A. Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land by William H. Patterson Jr. &Andrew Thornton, 2001. (I read Stranger years ago, will have to drag it out again.) Some interesting spots but basically this is a college level text for a writing or literary degree. Not long but like most school text, kind of boring.

Proposition 7 should show everyone what the California State Legislature thinks of our tax dollars, because they are being wasted!!! Proposition 7 was put on the November ballot by the California State Legislature. If Proposition 7 passes it does not put California on year round Daylight Savings Time, it only gives the California State Legislature the authority to vote on putting California on year round Daylight Savings Time. It would require both houses of the legislature to pass a “Year Round Daylight Savings Time Bill” by a 2/3 majority, but that still would not put California on year round Daylight Savings Time, because federal law prohibits the states from being on year round Daylight Savings Time. Federal law would have to be changed before California moved to year round Daylight Savings Time. Proposition 7 is a complete waste of tax dollars by being on the November ballot. The legislature should have gotten the California Congressional delegation to work on first changing federal law.

Roz October 20, 2018 at 2:31 AM

Thank You for bringing up Proposition 7 . After I read it too, I was not pleased. It does not make it so we will have year round Daylight Savings. I wish they would do away with the whole thing, so we can be on Standard Time year round, which would make it easier to get up in the morning in Fall/Winter, and we still have plenty of day light in the evenings Spring/Summer.

Lambie October 20, 2018 at 8:12 AM

How do other states/cities get away with it?

THE BLACK KNIGHT October 20, 2018 at 2:31 PM

Federal law allows states to be on year round Standard Daylight Time, but not year round Daylight Savings Time. Most of Arizona is on year round Standard Daylight Time/Mountain Standard Time except for the Navajo Indian Reservation in northeast Arizona. Interestingly, while the State of Arizona is on year round Standard Daylight Time, the Navajo Nation within Arizona follows Daylight Savings Time, there is a Hopi Nation which lies partially within the Navajo Nation which lies within Arizona that follows year round Standard Daylight Time, and finally there is another Navajo Nation that lies within the Hopi Nation which lies partially within the Navajo Nation which lies within Arizona which follows Daylight Savings Time.

Atticus Thraxx October 20, 2018 at 6:41 PM

Wait…what? Now I un-interstand it.

Ancient Mariner October 20, 2018 at 8:28 AM

Nice, long list, Atticus – perfect for shaving and drinking tea on a Saturday morning!
It’s a Luger, but I’m guessing a 1904 Navy Luger (longer barrel for shooting farther off a ship).

Atticus Thraxx October 20, 2018 at 11:18 AM

Marine Modell 1904-Navy Luger with 5.9 inch barrel and 100/200m rear sight. Fires 7.62x21mm I’m petty sure. Nicely done Ancient One!
Delighted you enjoyed Roz! 🙂

WC Resident October 20, 2018 at 8:35 PM

I would agree on the 7.65 and was puzzling over the longer barrel much like the American Eagle which I would not expect to see in Poland.

Atticus Thraxx October 20, 2018 at 9:51 PM

Good question WC and I don’t have a definitive answer. And you’re right it was a 7.65 not what I typed. There was a large German population within Polish territory prior to the war, so that would be my guess as to it’s source. Seems like there were a good number of European sidearm designs with very optimistic expectations of effective range. I’m not sure even with a longer barrel the 7.65 bullet out of a Luger was still supersonic at 200 meters. If so, just barely. Hardly call it a mankiller. Or womankiller as the case may be. If you had the pistol shown in that picture now, you could expect a six figure sale price though. Assuming it was still in good shape.

RANDOM TASK October 20, 2018 at 11:51 AM

hey so when are the cvchs board and leone going to jail

or are they employing the Hillary Clinton alibi of “what difference does it make now ”

corruption rampant in dem controlled areas and anything run by dem politicians

must be nice to be a criminal politician and nobody cares …leone for state treasurer right ……

HappyPappy October 20, 2018 at 12:16 PM

“Dad confronts bully by treating him like a son”

Here’s an uplifting story with a positive outcome. Why doesn’t the media focus more time on stories like this? It’s a rhetorical question!

Silva October 21, 2018 at 1:57 PM

I love it.

Mika October 20, 2018 at 4:29 PM

Elect Cheryl Hansen. Bring CVCHS back to MDUSD. Such a flagrant waste of our tax dollars.

Rollo Tomasi October 20, 2018 at 6:39 PM

In terms of flagrant waste of tax dollars, MDUSD has nothing to be proud of.

CV Grad October 20, 2018 at 9:06 PM

The County Leadership has sat on his hands and watched the Charter raid the public treasury. Cheryl Hansen alerted the County Board five a years ago to the corruption of the charter and was met with yawns and lack of interest The County is an accessory to the Charter corruption by their lack of oversight It’s time for a change at the county level.

Former CV Parent October 23, 2018 at 8:32 PM

Mika, Neither the County Superintendent nor the County Board of Education has the authority to return CVCHS to MDUSD. Legally, there are only three ways to return CVCHS to MDUSD. The first is if the CVCHS governing board votes to return it to MDUSD. We all know that isn’t going to happen. The second way is if CVCHS becomes financially insolvent. That isn’t going to happen because they have a permanent student base to bring in money from the state. In fact, they are sitting on a boat load of cash. The third reason is if their test scores are substantially worse than their students would have had if they weren’t at the charter. That’s not the case and will never be the case at CVCHS because, unlike a traditional HS, they are allowed to kick out (or counsel out) students who are poor performers academically in order to ensure they have good test scores. It doesn’t matter what financial and management issues investigators uncover. It doesn’t matter if the DA prosecutes the Linzeys or CV board members. It doesn’t matter if they violate their own charter, rig their board elections, or ignore every issue the County tells them to correct. There is absolutely nothing the County can do about it. That’s the way the law is written. That’s why the most recent investigation uncovered some of the same problems that the previous County investigation uncovered. The CVCHS board knows they are free to publicly say they will cooperate with the County, then thumb their noses at them in private. State law needs to change to allow meaningful oversight of charter schools. Until then, the abuses will continue.

So if you want to vote for Cheryl Hansen, I won’t try to dissuade you. But do it knowing she cannot return CVCHS to MDUSD. The County Superintendent of Schools doesn’t have the power. Neither does the County Board of Education. All they can do is be like an annoying fly buzzing around the CV administration and board. Nothing more.

Smith October 26, 2018 at 4:43 PM

And, that is exactly why they should never have been allowed to get a foothold in the community.

Shasta Daisy October 20, 2018 at 6:30 PM

Ricardoh October 21, 2018 at 10:48 AM

Last night was a night of crazies. As my wife and I were going to the Dean Lesher for a play we past San Carlos and Ignacio. On the median was a guy high on drugs with one pant leg shorter than the other and taking off his tee shirt. I have no idea how that ended up as we kept on going. Parking on the roof of the parking building for plays is pretty usual for me. When we got to the fifth floor of the parking building after the play there was a young Asian guy running up to people like and idiot and taking their pictures. When he ran up to me as I was close to my vehicle it startled me but I was ready to start swinging. Just as fast he ran off to chase another person. It was like an early Halloween.

I’m watching the news as the caravan moves north to our southern border. The numbers are swelling, I’m hearing 7000. I dread thinking what will happen when they get here, especially if they arrive en-mass at one border entry point. They are going to be unstoppable. There is nothing the military can do. The INS was overwhelmed last time and it will be worse this time. The Bay Area might get lucky because everybody here who wants a job has one, and has found a place to live.

KAD October 23, 2018 at 12:14 AM

We need a new frozen biscuit in the area besides Pillsbury. Any recommendations? And where to buy?

Mary Fouts October 24, 2018 at 4:48 PM

@KAD – Consider forgoing the frozen biscuits. I make drop biscuits that are very tender and super easy to make, they also freeze well. Only 2 (or 3) ingredients necessary. You will need a kitchen scale to measure the ingredients:

Mix together in equal portions by weight:
Self Rising Flour
Heavy Whipping Cream

For a tangier biscuit (which is what I make), replace 20% of the Heavy Whipping Cream with Buttermilk.

Combine ingredients, may take a bit more cream/buttermilk to make a cohesive mass. Drop on parchment lined baking sheets, I do 40 – 45 gram biscuits. Brush biscuits with whipping cream. Top with seeds if desired, can also stir some cooked bacon bits or grated cheese into the batter. Bake at 350* F Convection oven, or 375* F regular oven, until done: lightly golden brown on bottom, and just starting to brown on top.

I usually bake 500 grams flour plus equivalent cream/buttermilk in a batch. That takes a pint of whole whipping cream, plus buttermilk. Keep a half dozen in fridge, and freeze any leftovers. My husband says these are the best biscuits ever.
