Gov. Brown Signs Media Literacy Bill

Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday signed a bill from a Napa state senator that’s designed to help students navigate the web to discern legitimate sources of online information.

Senate Bill 830, introduced by state Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, requires the state Department of Education’s website to list resources and instructional materials on media literacy, including professional development programs for teachers.

The department has to comply by July 1, 2019.

The bill was co-authored by a bipartisan group of legislators. It was inspired by a recent Stanford University study that found 82 percent of middle-school students found it challenging to distinguish advertisements
from news stories, according to Paul Payne, spokesman for Dodd.

The legislation passed both houses of the Legislature.

“This bill is about empowering students to make informed decisions,” Dodd said in a statement. “And frankly, it’s about safeguarding the future of our democracy.”

It should be interesting to see what resources and instructional materials they have these teachers teach.

Control the masses.

Bye bye HuffPo, CNN, and Fox…

Its sad when TMZ and The Onion are the most accurate “news” sources.

CNN used to be a great source until Trump was elected. Now that’s all they do is bash Trump. It takes a national disaster for them to cover anything else. I don’t watch anymore.

It’s not at all like the advertisements online try to look like news stories or anything like that.

Wasted legislation. Exactly who is going to create this training and lead people toward specific resources?? No bias there…..

The schools have become Indoctrination Centers and now the State will help them decide what is real and fake? WOW.

Parents need to step up and take some responsibility for educating their kids and not expecting The State to do it alone.

The Founding Fathers are spinning in their graves…

This is necessary? How about more rigorous educational standards and teaching critical thinking? We should eliminate “social promotion” and get back to making students earn their grades. Some will not pass and have to repeat one or more grades; life is difficult. I see some students in my university classes that I wonder how they got through high school and some of them do not pass my classes. We’re raising a bunch of idiots, which is how we have gotten to where we are now.

That was my first thought. California has earned a certain reputation.

Lolwut September 19, 2018 at 9:18 AM

What is real? What is fake? Is yours less faker than mine? I mean you’d think the weather channel would not be fake, but hey I guess they’re entertainment now.

The inmates are running the asylum. If California can enter the satallite race, they can afford to reduce DMV auto registration fees. We can’t get democrats out of California government soon enough. Should be a veritable crimefest when Brown starts pardoning convicted criminals before leaving office.

Get with the 21st century Lena. Satellites are now just a commodity, write a check and you can have one. There are several companies in this business.

Solution in search of a problem. But hey, more laws and regulations and money thrown at the wall, that should straighten things out!

Clown Brown still hard at work destroying what is left of this once great State vote for Cox in November unless you want more of the same or worse if Newsom(Nancy Pelosi’s Nephew) becomes our next Governor.
