DIRTY DINING: Johnny Rockets Reopens After Closure Due To Vermin Infestation

Johnny Rockets, located in the Sunvally Mall in Concord, has reopened after a closure due to a vermin infestation.

Inspectors say they found 15+ fresh rodent droppings under the food preparation table, behind the water heater, and at the storage area.

The health department also says the inspector saw an employee fail to wash his hands as required after changing trash bags.

wondering why suddenly all of these closures – was it happening before and no one knew about it? or is someone new in charge of inspections for the health department and they are actually doing their job?

I won’t be rocketing over there ever.

I work at that mall. Won’t be eating there again. Just went to Burger King on Alhambra and it is closed for failing health inspection. Just nasty.

A whole lot of places wouldn’t ever get well cleaned up without these closings or the constant threat of them. A successful food business is a very high paced affair, with food flying all over the kitchen and room for error. Those vermin are always there watching for their next gourmet meal (for them). They know they just have to wait a short little while after a good cleanup.

Every, EVERY restaurant has vermin and cockroaches, etc. It’s just a matter of the management making sure the place is as clean as it can be.
It’s always funny seeing people say “I will never go there again…” after a story comes out. Do they think it will not happen at the next restaurant they go to???

@Julie–looks like the health department is finally doing their job!

I know a a few dozen well known and always busy resteraunts that have NEVER been inspected by CCHD in their 20+ years of being open, all if them local to WC, PH, Mtz and Concord. I know of a dozen more in Danville, Lafayette and Orinda that haven’t as well.

There will never be enough inspectors to keep tabs on every place, they can’t even get to places that have had public complaints.

So in perspective, CCHD is not doing their job or at least efficiently to visit even 1/4 of the resteraunts out there, more like just doing it enough to make Claycord post about it.
I’ve been eating and literally watched a mouse run by the inspector didn’t see and they gave place a thumbs up…

I know you like making up outrageous statements and pretending they’re facts. But for the moment, let’s pretend you’re serious. I’ll excuse the few dozen claim as mere exaggeration, but please name one well-known and busy restaurant, over 20 years old, that has never been inspected by CCHD.

Kinsey Leakey August 15, 2018 - 3:11 PM - 3:11 PM

No I’m not going to name them why should I. A lot of places around here don’t have the required posted inspection sheets visible next to their entrances, so those haven’t been inspected since the post the sheet thing started years ago.
Don’t gimme that crap you don’t believe it, it’s quite obvious who’s been inspected and who hasn’t just by the sheet and that program has been going on many years.
Place I went to lunch today on Clayton Rd had no posted sheet and has been there 10 years.

What’s going on with the managers of these restaurants? Each of them should be fired for not noticing the problem areas.

Lena August 15, 2018 - 2:11 PM - 2:11 PM

Do they even inspect Taco Trucks?

Hatedbymany August 15, 2018 - 3:13 PM - 3:13 PM

Maybe they should worry about the disgusting vermon workers and their do a sweep and hire people who don’t reek like marijuana, wash their hands after handling food or wearing a hair net.

theonewhosaidit August 15, 2018 - 3:14 PM - 3:14 PM

whats wrong is the kids doing these jobs today are lazy and narcissistic . 15 years ago you would be welcomed with a friendly smile and today its like they are all doped up on prescription pills with no facial expression but just there existing. They don’t care about anyone but their paycheck and if you try to fire these type they complain about racism, homophobic, whatever card they can pull out to make managers afraid to even fire anyone these days.

Kinsey Leakey August 15, 2018 - 4:00 PM - 4:00 PM

I suggest you all watch the moving “Waiting”. It’s a great comedy about what goes on in resteraunts, and having at one time in high school working as a cook we did some crazy stuff in the kitchen.

Atticus Thraxx August 15, 2018 - 4:36 PM - 4:36 PM

They make a great hamburger. Good fries too. At least the one time I eat there 6 years ago.

Me and my husband were in not too long ago and after ordering our food and paying a woman with two boy’s came and sat at the counter and a young man with a ponytail and reddish blonde hair not wearing a hair net came from the back ( assuming that was her husband) i watched this young man ask them what they wanted then with in a few minutes he give her and her kids our food and milkshakes smh we didn’t get our order for almost an hour! After the woman left the same young man stepped from behind the counter and proceeded to cuss and brag about getting high on break. This place is a flop house for lazy people! I got the employees name (kyle) and spoke with the manager. He told me that it happens all the time and no real proof to do anything. I thought after that incident I wasn’t going to go back but definitely not going back now!! Disgusting

Michael August 15, 2018 - 5:37 PM - 5:37 PM

Tomi Sushi on the other side of the mall is also closed for health reasons. Looks like the mice are being pushed back and forth from one side of the mall to the other

Pony August 15, 2018 - 7:19 PM - 7:19 PM

So Rockets had rats but the MickeyD’s almost literally below them is clean? Or do they not check nearby restaurants when they close a place?

Citizen August 15, 2018 - 8:27 PM - 8:27 PM

How come restaurants have these vermin invading their kitchens? People rarely have these pests in their houses! I do not understand because there are always people working there! It is crazy! Gross!

Shoulda Coulda August 15, 2018 - 10:01 PM - 10:01 PM

Dear Citizen-
Are you kidding? Do you know how many
exterminator companies there are that service
people’s homes. Do you know how many
mouse & rat traps hardware stores sell to
homeowners. Maybe your house could use
an inspection.

Sonny August 15, 2018 - 8:41 PM - 8:41 PM

We went there around Christmas time and my son got sick in the mall. Never again

Shark4ever August 16, 2018 - 6:11 AM - 6:11 AM

We went there on Tuesday for dinner. I haven’t been to their in years. I brought my mom there because she use to enjoy their burgers. The service when they opened years ago was always good and it always looked clean. This time tables weren’t clean, service wasn’t good and the kitchen area was dirty. They use to bring nice hot fries out but the brought them with our burgers and they were cold. Very sad because they use to be so good. Won’t be going back anytime soon.

Mk August 16, 2018 - 6:36 AM - 6:36 AM

Its a management issue all the way, unfortunately restaurant managers get complacent \ tunnel vision, a “kick in the pants” and follow up of either ownership or land owner is warranted.

RH August 17, 2018 - 5:32 PM - 5:32 PM

Call Gordon Ramsey….he will set all of them straight!!!!
