Kudos to CHP for an amazing “Car Pool Lane’ scofflaw sweep this last Thursday AM on Highway 4. We counted 7 motorcycle officers working the lane. Like shooting fish in a a barrel….

Terry August 6, 2018 at 9:17 AM

That is one of my pet peeves, as I lawfully wait my turn in the line to access Highway 4 – lone drivers zipping past me in the car pool lane. Happy to hear this.

Finally got an appointment with the DMV and it’s only 3 days before the current DL expires in October. I should have gotten a notice in the mail by now but who knows when that will show up, if ever. Would you believe the security guard at the office wanted me to go to the end of the very long, out the door, line for non-appointments just to pick up the DMV booklet? I went to AAA and got it there. I’m trying to read through it (I guess this is my book report). So far it is mostly the same thing over and over and over. There is about 1/2 page dedicated to new reg’s for 2018.

KAD August 3, 2018 at 10:17 PM

Take the online tests. That should help.

Anon-2-U August 4, 2018 at 8:50 AM

Agree with KAD – the online tests will help you sharpen those brain cells so you will feel more comfortable IF you have to take a test.

On the not yet received renewal form, it will indicate if you have to take a test, or if you will just have to have the eye test and new picture. Also, if you don’t have a passport, you may want to get the “Real ID” license so you’ll have to take in your SSCard, Marriage License, proof of residency (I used a utility bill that has my name on it), and Birth Certificate.

If you went to the Concord office, that security guard is a joke. I had appointments and was told to stand in the long line, yet another person walked up said they had an appointment and the guard told them where to go inside the building. The clerk I had let me look at my photograph to make sure I was happy with it, he was a great employee, as he was very helpful with everything I had to do.

Good luck, I hope your appointment is uneventful.

Captain Bebops August 4, 2018 at 9:35 AM

Having moved to California from Washington state I find some of these government things very weird. In Washington the only thing you went to the DMV offices for is to get a driver’s license or get a new photo for one. Tabs, plates and other issues were farmed out to shops and real estate offices. No lines to stand in. For a city of 25,000 there were actually two small DMV offices.

Also in Washington state if you needed a fictitious name for your business you filled out a card with your three choices and mailed it is with a small fee to the state. They sent you a postcard informing you which of the three was registered. No need to advertise in some local small newspaper.

Dorothy August 4, 2018 at 10:24 AM

I’ve been doing the online tests just in case I can’t get a written one. But I know I will have to take the test one way or the other. I’m not going to try for the Real ID rigamarole this time around for a few reasons. Mostly because I won’t fly.

Silva August 4, 2018 at 11:46 AM

Captain Bebops, that sounds like a good system! I bet it’s lots more cost effective.

Anne August 4, 2018 at 12:43 PM

Dorothy, Last Fall, I had to take the test for the first time in many years. my daughter had me download a free app called DMV Genie It has multi-level practice tests which I took over and over. the easier ones explained why your answer was incorrect I passed easily. I highly recommend.

Anne August 4, 2018 at 1:06 PM

Download free app DMV Genie. Multi-level level Tests for quick review anytime, anywhere. Highly recommend.

Well Folks August 5, 2018 at 9:43 AM

Moved to this time last year. Went to DMV got a book and made appt for DL & reg vehicle. Got there, they ran my CA drivers license, license came up clean so not test. Punched hole in CA license and gave me a temp NV license and was told to go to next line for picture and that was that. Then sent me to a desk to reg vehicle, lady did all the paper work, handed me plates and stickers and I was done. 1.5 hours start to finish.

oops Brasas Do Brazil Churrascaria

ConcordKate August 3, 2018 at 11:23 PM

Not tried it yet – I viewed the menu on line and it looks expensive, but maybe because of the style/way the food is served? I’m not familiar. But I’m with FLS – I would love to hear from anyone who’s tried it.

Chicken Little August 4, 2018 at 3:57 AM

We ate there a couple of weeks ago. It was absolutely delicious, and the service was excellent. I can’t wait to go back, but the price makes it kind of a “special occasion” place.

If you do go, bring an appetite, because there are like 15 different cuts of meat, and you’ll want to try them all at least once.

Silva August 4, 2018 at 11:38 AM

It sounds like meat lover’s paradise. Not so much a meal, as a real dining experience. A bit unusual for Concord. I hope it’s still as good as folks are saying it is now when it’s in my budget. It’s on my to do list.

Roz August 4, 2018 at 7:31 PM

Not yet, but it’s on my list to try, like a special occasion. I really don’t eat that much, so I’m planning to have a little of everything.

Where can we see the results of past surveys?

Kinsey Leaky August 4, 2018 at 12:29 AM

Why do you people even go to a bay area DMV office? We drive up to Jackson and walk right in, never a line and then spend the day shopping the old stores there.. You gotta be nuts waiting hours at a bay area office when you just get out of a big populated area and then walk right up to the window.

KAD August 4, 2018 at 12:53 AM

Thanks for the tip.

Bob August 4, 2018 at 8:13 AM

I am also studying for my DMV test—there are numerous sample tests on the internet–just go to “ca dmv tests”–so far I have passed every one, but dread going into the DMV for the real one.

Strad August 5, 2018 at 3:31 PM

I just passed mine. Next time I might ask for the paper test instead of taking it on the computer touch screen. With paper you can see all the questions and skip around , with the computer you can skip three questions and do them at the end. Questions covering the whole book so read through the whole book a couple of times. Safest common sense answer when in doubt.

Anon-2-U August 4, 2018 at 9:01 AM

Any info on the accident that happened either last night or early morning today on Ygnacio Valley Rd? It was closed, so was wondering.

Wheel August 4, 2018 at 9:18 AM

What a great idea, thanks kinseyfor the info. Make a nice day trip out of an otherwise unpleasant experience!

Kinsey Leaky August 4, 2018 at 1:16 PM

I recently heard more people are wise to this tho, but even DMV in smaller populated areas are still short waits and you don’t need appointments.
A few months ago my son and I walked into Concord DMV no appt and only waited 20 minutes. We just happened to drive by and noticed empty parking lot so pulled in.
Easiest and fastest is joim AAA for doing DMV and skip DMV bullcrap.

Concord Guy August 4, 2018 at 9:26 AM

There is nothing more stupid than a person crossing a street looking down with their nose in a mobile phone.

Dorothy August 4, 2018 at 10:28 AM

Except those also pushing a baby in a stroller in front of them. Even more stupid than just those nose down into their cell.

ZZ August 4, 2018 at 12:38 PM

Typical jail time is no more than five years of jail time and a fine for tax evasion. They are using this guy as an example. Any ties to Trump will cost you, dearly.

Kinsey Leaky August 4, 2018 at 1:11 PM

What’s wrong, no ice cream is available in the courts and you can’t take a metal spoon even to eat it thru the metal detectors.

Mary Fouts August 4, 2018 at 3:18 PM

Kinsey Leaky – I volunteer 8 hours a week at the main Courthouse in Martinez. Years ago that courthouse used to have a snack shack in the outside Court Annex area; it was removed to make way for Courtrooms Depts 3 and 40. I wish the snack shack was still there for the convenience of jurors and other court visitors.

Nothing is allowed through security that could be used as a weapon. That (unfortunately) includes metal utensils – even spoons. Also fingernail clippers, pocket knives, lighters/matches, and knitting needles/crochet hooks. Bamboo knitting needles are also not allowed.

I am sorry for the frustration you experienced, and will see what I can do to get the Jury Assembly Area, at least, stocked with plastic utensils.

Dr. Jellyfinger August 7, 2018 at 10:44 PM

ATTENTION: There is a black male, perhaps in his 50s and about 5’11, hanging around the Ygnacio Valley Plaza (where Ross and Panda Express are) that asks people for money with the excuse his car broke down and needs gas money for him and his workers. He uses your money to buy food at the Burger King in the plaza or other things but at least to feed himself. This guy is a serial manipulator and he’s known to approach you while you’re using the Chase Bank’s ATM. BE AWARE OF HIM; HE COULD BE DANGEROUS!

Silva August 6, 2018 at 6:19 PM

This guy works all around these parts. I hear he’s a really smooth talker. I bet he makes pretty good money.

Does anyone know how the accident happened last night around 7 pm at the intersection of Farm Bureau and Concord Blvd.? At least 4 cars involved including 1 pick-up that looked as if it rolled over. Looking a the damage, someone was speeding and I can only guess ran a red light..

Cowellian August 6, 2018 at 9:52 AM

Woo Hoo! I just found out that “Better Call Saul” season 4 starts tonight on AMC. I have my DVR all set up.

Steph August 6, 2018 at 10:16 PM

I was so excited to watch it tonight. I thought it was great!

Cowellian August 6, 2018 at 10:26 PM

No spoilers, please. This will be a Sunday night viewing in my house.

Silva August 7, 2018 at 1:30 PM

My partner wants me to watch it with him. After being sucked into Breaking Bad for several marathon front to back viewings, I’ve refused to watch another episode of ANYTHING. I hope it’s not anywhere near as addictive as BB was.

Cowellian August 7, 2018 at 1:49 PM

My son and I just finished Breaking Bad on Netflix. My wife wouldn’t watch it, but she will watch Better Call Saul with us.

KAD August 7, 2018 at 12:25 AM

This is a sad post. We just lost our beloved dog. She was an older dog. I have wet dog food (cesars), some dry food (opened, good stuff) and dog treats (unopened), and a box of training pads. She was never house broken and a rescue from the shelter – not by us, but her previous owner. Where is the best place to donate these items?

Antler August 7, 2018 at 6:24 AM

Oh, KAD…. I am so sorry for your loss.
The ARF facility probably would welcome your kind offer to donate food.

Silva August 7, 2018 at 6:55 AM

I’m so sorry KAD. Our elderly cat died a couple of months ago, and I don’t know what to do with her food. It’s Meow mix wet seafood mix. It’s good food, but my other cats only kibble.

Kentucky Derby August 7, 2018 at 9:16 AM

KAD, I’m so sorry. Our pets are part of our family, and it’s devastating to lose our furry ones. I agree with Antler – ARF takes monetary and non- monetary donations. They list on their website what they accept as far as non – monetary. Take care…

Atticus Thraxx August 7, 2018 at 7:27 PM

That had to hurt KAD, I’m sorry. That’s the thing with these creatures, they give so much love and trust in us and alot of the times we’re not worthy of it. And then they go and die. Consider holding on to that stuff. A little time passes you may get the “feels” and what to share your home with another one. It happens. Time heals sh*t you wouldn’t think it could.

Dr. Jellyfinger August 7, 2018 at 9:44 PM

I can’t remember who the comedian was who said:
“Dogs are a 15 year time bomb of tragedy just waiting to go off”
It made laugh just a bit, but maybe that’s because I understand…
It’s a lot more true than it is funny…. I’ve had my share of canine friends through the years …. the only trouble with dogs is they don’t live as long as we do.

KAD August 7, 2018 at 11:32 PM

Thank you everyone. The older you get the harder it is to deal with loss.

Atticus Thraxx August 8, 2018 at 4:22 PM

Ain’t that the truth.

Atticus Thraxx August 7, 2018 at 7:16 PM

Knowledge nuggets:
So I’m reading about astronomy on the cheap thanks to Half-Priced books(side note, if you peel the price label back you may note you’re paying more than 1/2 price on some titles) and along with the usual cast of extraordinary minds I ran across the story of an Italian cat name of Giordano Bruno. Never heard of him? Neither had I, but check this out. Born in 1548, he was a Dominican friar and grew bored of math, poetry, and philosophy. And grew into the brand new field of cosmological theorist. An incredible small field in the late 1500’s. Anyway Aristole/Copernican model held that the earth was the center of our solar system and that was the prevailing theory of the time. By prevailing I mean that if you didn’t toe the line on that, the Catholic church had no end of torture in mind for you. Heresy and horse thieving being two crimes early people never could scale correctly, but I digest… Our buddy Girdano was not a scientist in the truest sense of the word and all the more considering it’s the 1500’s. But he had a notion that the earth like the other celestial bodies likely revolved around the sun. Oh but he wasn’t done with his heresy. He insisted the universe itself was infinite. Infinite doesn’t really sit to well with Popes it turns out. So around he goes talking about all this. Lo and behold the church ( specifically Cardinal Robert Ballermine) lies and tells him to come to Rome for a job. Yeah, he got a job alright…The Inquisition. You may have heard of it. So this sick bastid Ballermine has him tried by the Dominicans ( dogs of God) and of course there’s no jury. To be fair it sounds like he had several chances to recant but in a fit of hubris and integrity, possibly mixed with tertiary syphilis he said “I have neither ought to recant, nor will I”. So he was found guilty of being a heratic and sentenced to death. So, never one to leave a turn of phrase unmolested says” In pronouncing my sentence , your fear is greater than mine in hearing it”. To fully understand the baddasery of this man you have to know what Catholics were(are) capable of. They clamped his mouth shut with an iron gag, pierced his tongue with an iron spike, and for good measure and maybe it was Lent, drove another spike through his palette. Then on Saturday Feb 19 1600, he was stripped naked and paraded through Rome and then burned at the stake.
There is no higher courage, equal maybe, but none higher. Not for a love, nor a child, nor a flag, nor a nation, but for an ideal. Burning, white hot truth in a miserable sea of ignorance and superstition. My next cat’s name will be Giordano. If you’d like to read more, let me throw a wiki at ya:

Antler August 9, 2018 at 12:46 AM

Half-Price Books for the win! And thank you for passing on the information, too.
But please tell me you will really use “Gordy” as your future cat’s call name!!!
(BTW… Anna Chan has some black kittens hand-raised and ready for adoption!)
