UPDATE: Westbound Hwy.24 Back Open After Deadly Police Chase

July 21, 2018 19:26 pm · 43 comments

One person was killed and another injured in a collision related to a police chase on state Highway 24 in Orinda this morning that closed the highway for nearly six hours, law enforcement officials said.

The roadway is now back open.

An Orinda police officer tried to pull a car over near St. Stephens Drive and Tahos Road around 9 a.m., according to sheriff’s officials. However, the car sped off, and the officer pursued.

The car got onto westbound Highway 24, sheriff’s officials said. The officer lost sight of the car, according to sheriff’s officials, but then found the overturned car on Highway 24 near the BART station.

The overturned car was engulfed in flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.

There were two people in the vehicle, and they were given first aid, sheriff’s officials said. The pair was taken to a hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead, according to sheriff’s officials.

The district attorney’s office, the sheriff’s office and the California Highway Patrol are investigating the incident. The officer-involved fatal incident protocol has been invoked, sheriff’s officials said.

Anyone with any information about the pursuit is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (925) 313-2600. Tips can be emailed to tips@so.cccounty.us or call (866) 846-3592 anonymously.

The story isn’t exactly clear, the overturned car was the car the officer was chasing… right?

Kyle July 21, 2018 at 8:18 PM

Yes

Peter July 21, 2018 at 8:09 PM

Story is very clear. The car at St.Stephens and the overturned car ARE the same car.

Dr Jellyfinger July 21, 2018 at 9:40 PM

But the officer lost sight of the car…. maybe it was a very similar car that got hit & overturned as the suspects sped away….. it could happen. Are you sure it was the same car Peter? Are you absolutely sure?

Anon July 22, 2018 at 11:33 AM

My guess would be Eyewitnesses – when is Hwy 24 empty, Never.
2, The crash looks like a 100 mph crash, also the cars computer will confirm the final minute or so of what the car was doing.

Pony July 22, 2018 at 2:01 PM

If the car had real plates on it, simple cross ref with the vin plate. If paper plates, most likely some of the last cars it passed noticed

Peter July 22, 2018 at 9:56 PM

Jellyfinger,I could not care less if it the same car or not.Your statement was the story is not exactly clear. My response was the story is clear.”The officer lost sight of the car, according to sheriff’s officials, but then found THE overturned car on highway 24 near the Bart station.”The story did not say the officer found AN overturned car.Again, the story is very clear.
.

Dr Jellyfinger July 23, 2018 at 8:13 AM

How could the story be perfectly clear if I didn’t understand it?

Story said the officer then found “the overturned car” it did not say “officer then found the suspect vehicle “overturned” which would have been the proper way to have written it.

As written, it could have been a different vehicle that was found “overturned”.
“The officer then found the overturned car”….
What if there had been two overturned cars? Would they both be the car the cops were chasing?

If we were still allowed to post under multiple names I’m sure there would be a lot of posts claiming to have been confused by the story as written.

Good riddance

Paranoid pablito July 21, 2018 at 8:40 PM

Think about that backup… It’s truly sad how many people missed something important: wedding, funeral, whatever. All those thousands of people had somewhere they needed to be. And they weren’t there, all because of one single idiot. Hate to say it, but, well, you know.

Kimberlina July 21, 2018 at 10:43 PM

We sat in it for Almost three hours. Lesson learned…when they say take an alternative route, take an alternative route.

Eudamonia July 22, 2018 at 9:08 AM

BART was working just fine. I made it to the wedding I was heading to.

Shiloh July 23, 2018 at 7:49 AM

How do you feel about BART now?! 😳

KAD July 21, 2018 at 8:57 PM

I always wondered if there are any back roads that will get you close to the tunnel?

Chicken Little July 21, 2018 at 10:24 PM

Yes, there are.

KAD July 21, 2018 at 11:40 PM

I do know that you can go to Moraga and to the Canyon to Oakland,

Silva July 22, 2018 at 8:22 AM

Shshsh…

Chicken Little July 22, 2018 at 9:07 AM

You can also take Bear Creek to Camino Pablo to Orinda. Then you can take Wildcat Canyon through Tilden Park to Grizzly Peak to Fish Ranch, and it plops you right at the tunnel entrance.

My son and I were caught in this traffic around 9:30 we were he’s headed to Oakland airport took three hours from Concord. Saw the crash scene, it was horrible if anyone lives they are lucky. Missed our flight flying out tomorrow at 5:30 am. Some of the worst traffic I have seen since the earthquake. Really disappointed by people driving on the shoulder.

Amen! July 21, 2018 at 10:25 PM

This now seems to happen daily. Glad no innocent party was hurt THIS TIME. Is it really better to keep releasing these people to keep reoffending? What a drain on resources no matter which way you choose.

Joatmea July 22, 2018 at 8:01 AM

I don’t see anything in the story stating the person was a repeat offender.

Sign from Above July 23, 2018 at 7:12 AM

Unfortunately, although not in this case, we are seeing a lot of stories about criminals going the wrong direction on the freeway knowing the police will not pursue. No thought for others. These people are just scum.

Bob July 22, 2018 at 1:49 AM

Play stupid games……..

Citizen July 22, 2018 at 8:03 AM

Bad boys causing all sorts of dismay! I wonder what offenses they had other than bolting! It seems to me for chasing them caused a horrific accident with a fatality and injured occupant! What if that accident took out innocent drivers on the freeway? I think unless it is safe chasing cars on the freeways is too risky for we the people who obey the rules!

PH Dad July 22, 2018 at 11:18 AM

There are a couple of other sources of information on this which state that the officer was walking up to the suspect vehicle when the driver fled. By the time that the officer returned to his vehicle and started after the suspect he was on the freeway. The officer next saw the scene of the accident and thus it really was never a pursuit. This is all on the driver who fled and then caused a single vehicle accident through reckless driving.
Zero sympathy for either of the people in the car. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. My only sympathy is for the thousands of people whose lives were disrupted through the reckless actions of one idiot.

Amy July 22, 2018 at 10:21 AM

“Deadly Police Chase” makes it sound like the police caused this or were at fault. From what I read the police lost sight of the car and later found it after it had crashed further down the road. The police did not cause this.

Doh July 22, 2018 at 10:23 AM

It’s now 24 hours later. When will we get more information? Was this just a traffic stop? Why did the person speed away?

T-Rex July 22, 2018 at 12:36 PM

Legend has it the police asked the guy why he sped off, but he’s dead so they are still waiting for his response.

OverWhelmed July 22, 2018 at 12:58 PM

For that car to be mangled that fast, he had to be going over 100mph. Sorry he was stupid and died!

Citizen July 22, 2018 at 2:50 PM

Oh! I did not hear that the idiots caused their own demise!
So I was wrong thinking the authorities caused this by a high speed pursuit!
That was a big mistake the bad boys made!

Instinct July 22, 2018 at 3:31 PM

Your first instinct was to blame the police instead of the criminals.
Congratulations! You are part of the reason for the rise in crime in California. And these criminals would thank you for your support if they hadn’t killed themselves.

Sign from Above July 23, 2018 at 7:18 AM

@ Instinct. Exactly. Many Californians are way to quick to try and blame the police. Lack of personal responsibility is the cause. The police are just doing their jobs. Doing a traffic stop and the idiot takes off running. What do we expect the police to do? I expect them to act, as I am paying them to do. That’s the case here and in most cases. Here’s an idea……..How about we put the blame where it lies? It lies in the criminals lap

Bob Wiley July 22, 2018 at 3:09 PM

Don’t drive through Orinda. You’ll either get harassed by the police or end up dead. Not sure which one is worse…

Sign from Above July 23, 2018 at 7:19 AM

What a stupid comment! You Bob are part of the problem!

Citizen July 22, 2018 at 5:35 PM

To instinct: You are quick to judge a situation you know nothing about!
First of all I was quick to admit my error and then for you to accuse me of being blamed for the rise in crime sounds pretty weird! I think you have an anger problem by the tone of your hateful response! I am thankful I do not have to deal with you personally in any way! Reserve your nasty crazy accusation and use it in yourself! Maybe you are the reason the crime rate is rising! I suggest you read more!

Instinct July 22, 2018 at 8:37 PM

That is funny, coming from one of the most hateful people on Claycord

Darwin July 22, 2018 at 10:06 PM

They won my award. 😊

Cartman July 22, 2018 at 11:35 PM

BOIL HIM !!!

Steve Jones July 22, 2018 at 11:55 PM

Why were you headed to the airport a day before the flight took off?

Lena July 23, 2018 at 5:51 AM

They missed their flight yestetday because of the traffic, and will have to fly out today at 5:30am, instead, after rebooking it.

Dr. Jellyfinger July 23, 2018 at 9:15 AM

Lena,
Mr.Jones obviously suffers from M&MS
(Meanings and Misunderstandings Syndrome)
I am afflicted as well.

Thank you for being nice and explaining, regarding his question as an honest one, rather than just chastising him as being an obvious smart ass.

Warbirds45 July 23, 2018 at 4:44 AM

We were headed to Oakland from Clayton at 9 am on Saturday morning.
We were a couple minutes behind the accident.
The Highway Patrol did an outstanding job of detouring traffic around the incident.
What we would like to know is why it took so long to reopen the freeway?

Doh July 23, 2018 at 10:34 AM

It’s been 48 hours since. Where are the updates?
