Dear County Connection Board Members,
My name is Darien Rule and I am a teacher at M.D.U.S.D.’s Bridge Program.
Bridge is a transition program for 18-22 year old students who have special needs.
Our most important goals here are to give our students the skills they need to be as independent as possible and to be civic minded members of our community.
We have thoroughly utilized, enjoyed, and appreciated County Connection’s program which allows seniors and folks with disabilities to ride free during the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm. This amazing program has allowed us to travel all over our area!
We take bus 10 to Kmart to beef up our work skills and up to the county library to build our minds and understanding of the world.
We take bus 14 to Sprouts, Safeway, and Whole Foods to learn the value of healthy eating and to buy food for our cooking lessons.
We take bus 15 to the Animal Rescue Foundation to explore volunteer and paid positions.
We take bus 16 to Martinez to explore the John Muir house and to hike in the beautiful marina area.
We take bus 17 to visit the Marchus Center’s ROP center to learn about their culinary and housekeeping programs where we learn the skills needed to become productive working adults in our community.
We take bus 19 to Buchanan Field to learn more about the important aviation history of our area.
We take bus 20 to DVC to enjoy the cultural exposure to music, plays, classes, and cuisine.
These are just a few of the many places we are able to visit thanks to the County Connection’s program allowing free rides for the elderly and disabled.
We have also enjoyed building relationships with some of your delightful drivers; Eric, Maria, Jeanette, Kimberly, and Elisea; they are always ready with a warm greeting and kind assistance.
Please, consider supporting and continuing this valuable program which means so much to so many!
Respectfully submitted,
Darien Rule

KAD July 13, 2018 at 8:43 PM

Are they doing away with the “free”?

BWIZZLE July 13, 2018 at 9:58 PM

My daughter is a very happy student in the Bridge Program!
Thank you Darien for your passion and obvious dedication to these young adults in the Bridge Program, including my baby!
Thanks also to the County Connection and the friendly drivers.
As parents, my wife and I take great comfort in knowing our daughter is in such great hands each day. Thank you all!

Darien Rule July 14, 2018 at 7:05 AM

KAD…Yes, they are proposing to do away with the free rides for the elderly and disabled. This will severely curtail our ability to travel.
BWIZZLE…I’m glad your sweet daughter is happy at Bridge! I’m happy there, too! I love my job!
EVERYONE… Please consider contacting the county connection board members and asking them to keep this amazing program going.

Good heavens – why would they even consider ending a program that helps seniors and disabled people? That’s terrible – I will contact County Connection and voice my support of the program

Dr Jellyfinger July 13, 2018 at 10:15 PM

Uh oh…… I smell smoke outside…… anybody know why?
It does not smell like BBQ.

Mika July 13, 2018 at 10:39 PM

Why all the helicopters flying over Monument/680 area?

Dr Jellyfinger July 13, 2018 at 10:46 PM

It might just be oak or hickory wood being fired up to start the smokers tho…. I guess it’s a little early to be smelling the aroma of ribs and brisket…

Sparkerdoo July 14, 2018 at 12:50 AM

In case you haven’t noticed most public restrooms are now 🚻; we have now entered into the world of Unisex public toilets (also called gender-inclusive, gender-neutral or all-gender toilets) which are public toilets that are not separated by gender.
Whether WE women like it or not, when we get the urge to use the rest room, we are forced to endure having to look and unfortunately smell those disgusting urinals that obviously don’t require a man to do ANYTHING, but pee and leave. Now, not all public restrooms have urinals, and it’s those I would like to address.
Why is it ALMOST EVERY TIME I go into a 🚻 restroom, especially when a man exits…I HAVE to lower the toilet seat from his urinating experience? Why can’t he do it? Since there is usually pee all around the toilet, why can’t you guys pee, and put the toilet seat back down? You men are the ones who needs it up, NOT us women. When you purchase a toilet seat, it is installed with a cover up against the tank and then the seat. Men are the ones who then lift that up, so as not to urinate on the seat. When done, how much of an effort does it take to put the seat back down?
Think about it…..when we now walk in to these 🚻 restrooms, especially when we have kids with us…. do you want your kids or grand kids reaching out to touch these dirty germ ridden seats? When I bring my granddaughter into these bathrooms, I need to go in first and use my foot to lower your seat down, so she doesn’t touch it.
You’d NEVER walk into a women’s restroom and find the seat up.
Let’s face it, we want to touch as little as possible in public 🚽restrooms especially a toilet seat that we HAVE to cover just to sit on.
Have some class, think about the next person who will be using the facility.
It’s just a polite thing to do, if you lift up the toilet seat to go….. then return it back down when you leave.
It can’t be that difficult…..
We women would really appreciate it!

HappyPappy July 14, 2018 at 7:46 AM

We would happily put the seat down for you………..but you NEVER leave the seat UP for us.
Works both ways, granny, their are lazy slobs of both (all) genders.

Ronnie July 14, 2018 at 9:11 AM

I leave it up because the next guy may not be evolved enough to lift the seat when he pees. He’ll leave it down and pee all over the seat. Do you want to deal with that?

Justifiable Languor July 14, 2018 at 10:01 AM

CA went along with this nonsense?

I always felt the women of this area were pretty accommodating – to the point of turning a blind eye to effeminate males dressed as women in restrooms. Why would CA legislators feel the need to invite perverts as well?

Lena July 14, 2018 at 10:46 AM

I refuse to use the unisex toilets. I’ll just hold it till I get home … or find a bush. So there, you sick, perverted policy makers. Expect a bunch of bushes near you unisex bathrooms to start dying.

Justifiable Languor July 14, 2018 at 12:21 PM

Lena, you make me laugh…

and another thing. Don’t we have enough trouble with lids and pee on the seat with out inviting men to the party? The restrooms at the Summit are truly a hazard, even with only women using them.

Silva July 14, 2018 at 12:49 PM

Just buy a GoGirl.

Justifiable Languor July 14, 2018 at 2:39 PM

The things I learn on Claycord!

Charlie July 14, 2018 at 7:47 PM

After all – it is the #1 best seller in female urnals!

Lena July 15, 2018 at 7:28 PM

The GoGirl only solves one of the problems. I don’t want to slog through pee in leather sandals or flipflops. Do you? Besides that, I attract perverts. I know it. I would not put myself in an environment that would increase the risk to me that something untoward would happen. I’ll use a bush!

Lena July 15, 2018 at 7:57 PM

I’ll tell you why we don’t leave it up for you. Its normal position is down. Further, men are the only gender using it borh ways. In other words, men will have to put it down sooner or later, why not return it to the position of predominate use when you are done?

Scoob July 14, 2018 at 6:53 AM

Please don’t litter!

Shasta Daisy July 14, 2018 at 11:31 AM

And, please don’t pee in the bushes.

Kirkwood July 14, 2018 at 10:08 PM

Looks like that drive-in going up at Loveridge and North Park Blvd near Home Depot and Winco is indeed a Sonic Doesn’t seem like very good location in that mostly industrial area.

BoyCottVeranda July 15, 2018 at 9:26 AM

Calling all robust, plus size, big, beautiful, curvy people. Boycott the Veranda Shopping center in Concord.
None of the new stores carry plus sizes. Well, Tj Max has a rack that is about as long as my arm.
News Flash:
All ages are plus size
This feels like discrimination us!

WC Resident July 15, 2018 at 12:03 PM

Stores need to pay rent to the landlord. As a result, products are allocated to maximize revenue per square foot. I am a duck and have discovered that shoe stores have very few styles that will fit my feet. If, I, and my fellow ducks regularly patronized a store then we would start seeing a wider selection of styles as it would be worthwhile to the store to replace a less profitable line for those that cater to ducks.

There used to be a store in the Willows shopping center for larger people. I think it’s name was “Big & Tall.” Unfortunately, they are out of business.

Kirkwood July 16, 2018 at 10:24 AM

The name of that store was “Pretty And Plump”.

Kentucky Derby July 15, 2018 at 4:16 PM

I’ve never been plus size, and WC Resident makes a very valid point – but I believe BoyCottVeranda is correct. Retailers do discriminate against plus size (male and female) because we live in a “thin privilege society.” 2/3 of America is overweight or larger, so there should be a market for it.

I don’t have any personal experience in shopping for plus size, but a friend of mine (who’s plus size) told me she has to do all her shopping online. I shop in store and online, but I believe retailers gear their sales towards women my size. I can find anything, anywhere and retailers should be more inclusive.

Hang in there BoyCottVeranda!

BoyCottVeranda July 15, 2018 at 5:31 PM

Thank you Kentucky Derby!
I agree with you 100%.

Lena July 15, 2018 at 7:22 PM

Not that I wear plus size, so I don’t know what quality you might be looking for, but K-Mart on Clayton Road has almost nothing but plus size womens when I was there a few days ago.

Bluebird July 15, 2018 at 9:46 PM

KMart doesn’t carry any clothing of quality. I found god deals in the Macy’s women’s department and they always have a sale. I don’t want work clothes that fade after one or two washings or the thread comes out of the hems or seams. I also don’t like the layer of dust and cob webs on the shelves at KMart.

Silva July 17, 2018 at 10:41 AM

I’ve bought plenty of decent quality clothing at Kmart. Some of it is crap, but I live close enough to go in there for this, that, and the other thing, and sometimes something that fits my requirements calls out to get my attention. Like anywhere else you have to be very selective. I don’t recall anything ever falling apart or needing any mending. If anything It’s all getting more and more synthetic but that’s always been my complaint everywhere else too. I shop occasionally for my MIL who is a size 22, and I’ve found a few things there that she liked.

Silva July 17, 2018 at 10:43 AM

I’ve never been to the veranda.

Shasta Daisy July 15, 2018 at 9:20 PM

Mercury News fiasco July 16, 2018 at 12:37 PM

Pay attention to your credit card charges!
I agreed to a temporary offer (99 cents for a one month trial) made by the mercury news to be able to read their news articles through my cell phone (instead of seeing just the teaser/first few sentences they show for free.) I cancelled the offer a few weeks before it would have automatically renewed at $9.95 per month. Thank goodness I recorded the date of the phone call and the name of the person with whom I was cancelling the auto renewal. You guessed it.. They charged me anyway.
If I hadn’t noticed the charge of $9.95 it no doubt would have continued endlessly withdrawing from my account. Here we are approximately 2 months after that UNAUTHORIZED charge and I’ve yet to be reimbursed. Note: When I called to question the charge they had NO RECORD of my cancellation phone call. WTF? It was only after I raised hell, got a manager involved, and gave all pertinent “cancellation” facts; name of person I’d spoken to as well as my original cancellation phone call date – did they agree to credit my charge card. I’m STILL waiting – weeks later – for my money back. It appears I’ll have to call them AGAIN for reimbursement.

KAD July 16, 2018 at 1:11 PM

I had a similar situation with the East Bay Times. You can solve this by filing a “dispute” with your Bank. That worked well for me. It has to be a credit card and not a debit card.

Atticus Thraxx July 17, 2018 at 7:19 PM

You must be new, everyone else knows not to do business with those people. Digital First Media owns the MERC now and DFM is owned by some hedge fund lizards in N.Y.
My advice, unasked for, is cut your loses and just walk away. You’ll never see a penny.

Kentucky Derby July 16, 2018 at 1:49 PM

Hang in there Mercury News fiasco. I understand why people take advantage of “teaser rates.” They sound like a good deal – but they’re not. They’re looking to “hook you” (hoping you’ll forget) and what they’re really doing is financial manipulation. You’ll win a valid dispute with your bank, but keep in mind it’s your word against the company, and it’s always the banks decision.

As far as cancelation phone call, always ask for a confirmation #. Confirmation numbers are valid, and they can’t be disputed by the company.

Silva July 17, 2018 at 11:13 AM

I think it would be very nice that since PG&E will be turning off my power for “scheduled maintenance” that they expect to last all day, that they could advise me about it before hand, so I could adjust my plans accordingly. Oh well. My guests and I will figure out something else to eat, I suppose. One other thing, it’s kind of stupid to call me with an automated satisfaction survey 3 minutes after I find out my power will be off for 5 hours, and I have 5 hours worth of chores to do.

Original G July 17, 2018 at 4:09 PM

We’ve gotten to the point we’re leaving a 2 liter bottle of water in the freezer along with 2 per person 500ml water bottles.
Large one helps keep fridg. cool and individual bottles for cool drink and to lower core body temp. when there’s no AC.

Silva July 17, 2018 at 5:07 PM

That is an excellent idea, Original G.

Jojo Potato July 17, 2018 at 5:19 PM

You people were all upset about PGE cutting down and trimming the trees. Now after the fires, you are all supporting suing PGE for fires caused by tress close to the power lines.

Is it any surprise that PGE is now turning off these lines even more than ever before? I can’t ever remember PGE turning off lines like this, but I guess we made them do it, didn’t we? So there you are.

Anon July 17, 2018 at 6:02 PM

LOL, maybe MCE will leave the power on during a high wind forecast, oh wait..

Yeah, I remember the media covering all of the City Council meetings where “PGE wants to cut down all of our trees”.
Can’t have it both ways.

And for those calling for a government take over of the Utility, ha ha ha……you ain’t seen nothing yet if that happens

Atticus Thraxx July 17, 2018 at 7:21 PM

Sitting on some PCG stock JoJo? Down 0.047 for the day to close at 42.57. You’re fine.

Jojo Potato July 18, 2018 at 10:02 AM

Considering PCG was at $68 last September, it’s not doing that well. I don’t own any directly but I’m sure I do through the several mutual funds I hold. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to search for all the mutual funds that hold a particular stock. Ideas on how to do that? Thanks.

Lena July 18, 2018 at 1:58 PM

PGE stockholders need to suck it up and bury the power lines.

Atticus Thraxx July 18, 2018 at 6:11 PM

JoJo, First I’m about as qualified to give out financial advice as my cat is but my understanding is it can be difficult to parse out exactly what companies any given 401(k) invests in. By design. An Index Fund portfolio might be easier to suss out but if you have shares in an actively managed fund, good luck. There also may be disclosure laws depending on your state, again I’m out of my element on that and yes, I did ask my cat.

Original G July 17, 2018 at 2:53 PM

Stay away from Loveridge Road near Motel 6 in Pittsburg, flat bed truck with a big coil of steel flipped on its side at east bound highway 4 on ramp.
Highway 4 is not affected.
