The Water Cooler – The Summit With North Korea – Was It A Success?

June 12, 2018 12:00 pm · 76 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.

Today’s question:

Do you think the summit with North Korea was a success?

Talk about it.

Robert Akins June 12, 2018 at 12:06 PM

I doubt it. Sounds more of the same political B’S we’re typically exposed to.

Anon June 12, 2018 at 12:08 PM

Compared to the path NK was headed, I would say it’s an improvement.
Too bad everyone is too focused on a PRIVATE Sports team “winning” some title.

grandmato3 June 12, 2018 at 5:47 PM

Some people can multi-task. I support that sport team and also wish for peace with North Korea.

Bad Nombre June 12, 2018 at 12:09 PM

Define “success”.

It was a successful photo op. Has anyone read the “agreement”?

AlwaysBePositive June 12, 2018 at 2:23 PM

f…thanks for the link. Everyone should read it, it’s only about a page long. Guess what, ending the joint-military exercises isn’t in it. I guess djt just threw it in as a bonus.

Bad Nombre June 12, 2018 at 2:31 PM

Oops! He forgot to include the missiles.

Mimi (original) June 12, 2018 at 12:13 PM

Are we even sure the summit took place? Maybe it’s more FAKE NEWS perpetuated this time by 45 himself!!

Badge1104 June 12, 2018 at 9:35 PM

Well let’s put it this way: had Obama done it, all the Democrats and all the media would be saying it was the greatest thing in the world and they would want Obama to get another Nobel Peace Prize, even sainthood. But since it is Trump, of course they say its bad.

Cellophane June 12, 2018 at 12:14 PM

I think it’s too soon to tell.

It’s all up to KJU now.

Nellie June 12, 2018 at 12:15 PM

Yes. Until it’s not. We’ll see who opens their big trap first to blow it.

Nature Lover June 12, 2018 at 3:10 PM

So true. Good answer Nellie.

KinseyLeaky June 12, 2018 at 12:26 PM

Of course it was. Only a moron would say no, cause any meeting with Kim is a positive thing just for them meeting, the only negative about it is the liberals saying no cause it was Trump meeting with him.
Same exact formatted meeting with Kim if it was Obama the liberals would be 100% positive on the meeting and wouldn’t shut up about how great Obama was for meeting him, but as we all know Obama was a putz and wouldn’t meet him.
The negativity on the meeting is only the anti Trump people.

Bad Nombre June 12, 2018 at 12:55 PM

Hmm, so Obama’s mistake was NOT meeting with Rouhani or Khamene’i? At least he let us read the agreement with Iran.

Pyrrhus June 12, 2018 at 1:18 PM

Let’s be real. If Obama met with Kim the Republicans would be in a fury saying Obama is a traitor and a commie.

As someone who openly despises Trump I can honestly say this is a good first step. I truly hope peace can be found and that great changes can take place in North Korea that will benefit the North Korean people. If peace talks are successful this will be one of the few things he can leave behind positively for his Legacy.

hessianerd June 12, 2018 at 3:49 PM

so, only sane people.

It was a huge sucess for North Korea and China, it was beyond meaningless for the US and its allies, unless you count South Korea (which Trump doesnt seem to). For them it was probably a bad thing that The US stated that we would be stopping joint war games. Looks like a reunified peninsula might happen after all. Just not the way most of us hoped it would happen.

Its interesting that Trump is potentially the one to actually loose the Korean War.

HappyPappy June 13, 2018 at 10:18 AM

Anon2002 –
When did Obama suggested meeting with Kim and or other “enemies” and Republicans and the right wing media went ballistic?

Jim June 12, 2018 at 12:33 PM

Better than “the line in the sand” so far

Ricardoh June 12, 2018 at 12:37 PM

It was a successful beginning. You can tell that by how hard the left is trying to convince people that Kim won and Trump is dumb. I believe that those on the left that pray are praying President Trump gets taken to the cleaners. The proof the left knows nothing about making deals is what they have done in the past. All bad or failed.

Pyrrhus June 12, 2018 at 1:29 PM

Oh you mean like the way the Right treated Obama over the Iranian Deal? The same deal that had been in the works already for 2 prior administrations. Yeah, the Right really praised Obama on that.

I can’t stand Trump, but I’ll give him praise if anything concrete comes out of this. For the sake of the North Korean people I hope some agreement can be reached. That is what is truly important, not which political side gets the credit.

hessianerd June 12, 2018 at 4:14 PM

How do you give up so much for zero concrete commitments and call it a good deal? I honestly dont see it.

As much as I don’t like Trump, I do want to see him succeed, I just don’t see it based on what I know so far.

Ricardoh June 12, 2018 at 4:18 PM

Pyrrhus The Iranian deal was about as dumb as you can get. We gave them 150 billion dollars and got little in return. We couldn’t even inspect their sites. We did nothing about their missile program or stop their terrorism. In ten years they could build the bomb. Sorry but Obama was eight years of disaster.

Badge1104 June 12, 2018 at 9:39 PM

So True, Ricardoh!

What The ?? June 13, 2018 at 8:29 AM

Oh RicarDOH. First it was their money that we had seized and we gave it back, we didn’t pay them. And we had inspectors as part of the deal, why don’t you read it. Even Trump’s Secretary of State admitted that the Iranians were following the agreement. By tearing it up what did we get? Now Iran can start its program again.
Compare that to NK, Trump’s agreement has no details on inspectors or timetables and in fact was already in previous agreements so we got nothing that we didn’t already have, yet this is a winner….how?

Scooter June 12, 2018 at 12:43 PM

Success?? Anything but a success! We gave North Korea everything they wanted! Decades of footage for propaganda, legitimizing a heinous dictator who has committed unspeakable war crimes and crimes of humanity not seen since Hitler…and the US President stands beside him, saying he is honored to meet him??? Seeing the US Flag mixed in equally with the North Korea flag made me sick to my stomach. We got NOTHING except a cheap photo op….empty and vague promises, the same one they have broken a dozen times. All of this after insulting and disrespecting the leaders of our most trusted allies at the G7 because of awful tariff’s that will hurt so many in this country. This is a sad time in America.

Comment of the Day

Kenny June 12, 2018 at 1:10 PM

Just to be clear, I’m a liberal who dislikes Trump. We have to wait to see if it’s a success. My concern is that KJU now can tell his people he’s a world player because Trump meeting him legitimizes his regime. On the flip side, if a “real” agreement does come to pass, you have to credit Trump. Just have to wait and see.

Ricardoh June 12, 2018 at 4:23 PM

So he tells his people he is a world player. Do you really care? He can tell them anything he wants how will that hurt anyone. Legitimizing his regime will not feed them.

Silva June 12, 2018 at 1:21 PM

It’s sure to be a success for someone. DJT at least has scoped out some pristine beaches for “nice condos”. I have no idea what we agreed to, so I can’t answer the question.

Justifiable anger June 12, 2018 at 1:25 PM

The Young-un came from a family of tyrants. He is also surrounded by his fathers advisers. Kim Jong Un is a modern, compared to his fathers cronies. Any move forward is an indication of success.

USA June 12, 2018 at 1:37 PM

This is what you get when you put an ordinary businessman, and not a corrupt politician, in office.

IE: He gets stuff done.

Anonymous June 12, 2018 at 1:37 PM

What happened except we agreed to call off joint training with the South Koreans ?

I really thought Trump might get something ..

Ricardoh June 12, 2018 at 4:27 PM

Try to pay attention. It will be spring before the next war games. Do you think the president can’t change his mind. by next spring.

MovingOutOfCA June 12, 2018 at 1:38 PM

Yes. First President in 60 years to meet with the leader of NK. Hopefully it will go well. Everyone should be rooting for success

WC Resident June 12, 2018 at 1:38 PM

LOL – I thought the black and white countdown at would be for an atom bomb going off – it’s close!

Yes, the summit was a success, as a PR move.

RANDOM TASK June 12, 2018 at 1:39 PM

Hmmm so hours after a closed session of a huge nuclear meeting with America and lives on the line for us and the world …..

A bunch of demwitts opinions are going to be used to facilitate banter and obscene remarks towards a man and president with all our lives at stake

This should be good

Like asking a bunch of communists if they would have voted for CLINTON …
Either one of him

George June 12, 2018 at 1:40 PM

ABSOLUTELY! Peace is always a good thing.

MoJo June 12, 2018 at 1:41 PM

Too early to tell. If Desaulnier issues a statement then we’ll know it was a success.

Concordejet June 12, 2018 at 1:50 PM

Only God Knows

Gititogether June 12, 2018 at 2:00 PM

Enough of a success that it warrants clawing back the Nobel Peace Prize falsely awarded in 2009 and reissuing it to someone who actually earned it

Missy June 12, 2018 at 4:36 PM

Do you have any idea how the Nobel prizes are awarded? Obama didn’t petitiin for his peace prize any more than Trump will. Jeez, do some research before you parrott Fox news.

Foonman June 12, 2018 at 2:04 PM

It was supposed to be done in one day? That’s what Schumer could have done….lets see how we can blow this attempt up…..don’t necessarily like Trump, however, seeing the ilk of people like Schumer shoot their mouth off makes me sick… this is more important than you “party power” but some people just don’t get it…we need to rise above the “party” line and wish for a good outcome for the whole country…..

Chicken Little June 12, 2018 at 2:05 PM

It was absolutely successful. Was it the be all, end all? Of course not, but nobody is trying to claim that it is. It seems that Trump was successful in opening up a productive dialogue with KJU, which is a huge step toward a diplomatic relationship. And when that happens, everybody wins.

Elwood June 12, 2018 at 2:18 PM

Too soon to tell.

Dawg June 12, 2018 at 2:20 PM

So far, so good, it’s a start. I will call it a success when NOKO tears down their nuclear arsenal and we lift the sanctions. It’s the North Korean people that are suffering and starving while Kim Jung il keeps getting fatter.
Agreeing to stop the war games is a good thing, all it does is antagonize an already paranoid Kim Jung il

inmotion June 12, 2018 at 2:23 PM

More like appeasement, only time will tell.

walnut creek oldtimer June 12, 2018 at 2:26 PM

A chance for peace is always a good thing! I would think everyone would be on board for peace. At least President Trump is negotiating.

KJ June 12, 2018 at 2:38 PM

Looks like China is pleased that the US will not be having war games with South Korea anymore (assuming Trump doesn’t change his mind). Interestingly, China reported that even before Trump tweeted it — guess China got told first. It kind of makes the meeting a win for China, but not South Korea.

Alienating yet another ally (do we have any left?) while appeasing an enemy doesn’t seem like winning to me, especially if all you get is perhaps the chance to build a garish hotel in communist North Korea.

Law Dog June 12, 2018 at 2:47 PM

Yes, it’s a good start.

94517 June 12, 2018 at 3:14 PM

That’s really something a communist dictator is willing to negotiate with President Trump while liberal democrats refuse to do the same.

Ricardoh June 12, 2018 at 4:31 PM

It all has to do with who do you trust or figure has the power to do the right thing or who would get you killed after you give up your nukes. Ask Qaddafi if he would trust Obama and Hillary again.

Informed Voter June 12, 2018 at 3:36 PM

It was a huge success for Kim Jong Un. He appeared on the world stage as an equal partner with the President of the United States. Being accepted as a player on the world stage was one of the primary reasons for North Korea developing nuclear weapons. Mission accomplished for North Korea. Trump praised Kim to the skies, saying he is smart, talented, funny, loves his people, is beloved by his people, and wants to do the right thing. Trump gave one of the most brutal dictators on the planet a free pass on his atrocious human rights record, including his murder of American student Otto Warmbier. In addition, Kim got Trump to call off joint military exercises with South Korea, which is a win not only for North Korea, but also China and Russia.

What did Trump get in return? A joint statement in which North Korea agreed to nothing more than upholding a symbolic and toothless agreement they had signed with South Korea a few months ago. Trump got taken to the cleaners. What an embarrassment.

Doh June 12, 2018 at 4:25 PM

Best analysis. Plus Trump’s praise gives Kim lots of propaganda to play on TV.

Chicken Little June 12, 2018 at 5:24 PM

So, if KJU can be a player on the world stage just by being treated with respect by our President, isn’t that better than having to threaten nuclear war to get the same result?

This way, KJU can dismantle his nuclear arsenal while still saving face in the eyes of his country and the rest of the world. It’s called diplomacy.

If Trump had given him a couple billion dollars in cash, would you think it was a good deal?

Michael Langley June 12, 2018 at 3:41 PM

First, clearly define the goal of the meeting. Second, clearly state the outcomes. Finally, evaluate the degree of success.

Mojo gets today’s prize for best comment.

Bad Nombre June 12, 2018 at 4:21 PM

The markets responded with a great big “Meh”. I guess that either means that nothing important was accomplished or that Trump didn’t totally screw up, depending upon your politics.

Lena June 12, 2018 at 6:18 PM

Just the fact that they met and shook hands makes it a success in my book.

chuckie the troll June 12, 2018 at 6:31 PM

It is way too early to label this summit a success…or failure for that matter. It will take months, and maybe years to evaluate this ‘deal’. It can’t be much worse than the ones foisted on us by Clinton, Bush 2, or Obama.

The outcome is certainly better than an armed confrontation. Better than cyber-attacks and terrorism. And just imagine if North Korea DOES become a vacation hot-spot, without the danger of torture and long-term imprisonment for no good reason.

Mike June 12, 2018 at 6:53 PM

in that it opened up more cordial communications between us and them
In that our relationship with South Korea may be damaged and we got a little for a lot from Kim Young Un

This is a great column! I think I’ll breeze over to the Politics Column now & see if the liberals are squirming and wriggling around like slugs on a salt brick over there too!

WC Resident June 12, 2018 at 10:47 PM

The White House has release two things on their web site that I found interesting

1) The Joint Statement.

2) A statement read/given out at a press conference (followed by a long Q&A from the press) that includes mention of the agreed on destruction of a missile engine testing site (above and beyond the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula agreed to in the Joint Statement). Trump also mentions Kim Jong-Un’s age. I had thought that was one of those deep/dark State Secrets. Maybe he used the CIA’s official estimate of the guy’s age. I had thought there was an ongoing under-the-table program to return MIA remains. That will continue as an above-the-table program.

I thought it was funny that the video was given to the North Koreans on a cassette tape. I assume it’s VHS or PAL format. Hopefully they will get DVD drives and perhaps the Internet too. Maybe it was just Trump showing his age…

Fritzhugh Ludlow June 12, 2018 at 11:06 PM

If in 1951″Two Bomb Truman” had taken General MacArthur’s advice of a Radioactive band of death along the Yalu River, and the Atomic Bombing of 30 Red Chinese Air Bases, none of this would have been necessary.

AlwaysBePositive June 13, 2018 at 9:36 AM

fl…One of the reasons it might not be necessary could be that life as we know it may not exist on Earth. Had the US laid down a radioactive belt and actually nuked Chinese air bases that would have been 3 countries that America had used nuclear weapons against. The USSR would not have stopped their nuclear weapons program, but they certainly would have been closer to using them in a confrontation.

Patriot June 13, 2018 at 6:07 AM

Yes. The best part was Dennis Rodman throwing Obama under the bus for shining him on. lol

Obama stirred the pot. – Quite the opposite of Trump shaking his hand. Are we more concerned with a nuke hitting the West Coast today or when Obama was in office ? = SUCCESS SO FAR !

Dennis Rodman on CNN telling it like it is….

Anonymous June 13, 2018 at 9:27 AM

The idea of spreading a band of nuclear waste across Korea. .. you do know the wind blows from Korea to California.?

Paladin June 13, 2018 at 9:51 AM

Badge 1104, If the President were to single handedly cure cancer the Dems and their lackey media would criticize him for putting nurses out of work (because people seem to like nurses more than Doctors). There is clearly no unbiased reporting going on and so much public opinion is against this hard working, dedicated American Patriot, Donald J. Trump. Gratefully, he appears to not be impacted by their crap and he continues to work tirelessly (and for free) for the citizens of the United States. God Bless the United States of America and President Trump! MAGA! Trump 2020!

The Mamba June 13, 2018 at 9:54 AM

If it makes it less likely North Korea will lob a nuke over the Pacific, then yes, it’s a success.

mtzman June 13, 2018 at 10:33 AM

If Trump had just met with Kim and kept things simple, I certainly wouldn’t have criticized that, and I’m sure most people would have termed it a success. But Trump just couldn’t help himself and unilaterally cancelled military exercises without consulting or even bothering to inform South Korea, our own military or anyone else that he was doing so, and today he declared that North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat. Seriously?
