Treat Plaza On Treat Blvd. Near Clayton Rd. Will Get A Makeover This Year

May 15, 2018 8:00 am · 115 comments

Treat Plaza will get a long-overdue makeover this year.

The plaza will receive facade renovations, a new pad with a drive-thru, landscape renovations and new signage.

QUESTION: If you could pick a store or restaurant to move into the center, which one would it be?

Toogie May 15, 2018 at 8:09 AM

Chipotle please!

Ugh

Terry MacGyver May 15, 2018 at 8:11 AM

We really need a Cannabis store in there. It’s a hassle driving all the way to Berkeley.

Eastbay is right not left May 15, 2018 at 8:29 AM

You buy weed at a dispensary? You like paying double prices instead if local friends?

Always Right May 15, 2018 at 9:16 AM

@Terry – Have you thought about moving to Berkeley?

With all due respect, I would rather see you move there than have a stinky weed shop move here.

AnonZ May 15, 2018 at 9:48 AM

Great idea Terry!

TIFOKCIS May 15, 2018 at 9:57 AM

I need my drug (diving like an awhole to Berkeley).

Stoned idiot driving back to Claycord.

So wonderful.

Kris May 15, 2018 at 12:07 PM

Club weed is FAR better quality than home grown and totally worth the money.

Anon94597 May 15, 2018 at 12:54 PM

It’s funny to see people who drink alcohol get so riled up over a substance, especially one that’s meant to calm you down. Hypocrite much? Much rather be around stoners than drunks any day.

Ahh, No May 15, 2018 at 1:04 PM

Great idea Terry, Second that one.

ohmygoodness May 15, 2018 at 1:16 PM

There are medical dispensaries that deliver to you. I have NEVER gone to a dispensary. Angelcare360, Marygold… Save yourself the gas.

anonsense May 15, 2018 at 3:29 PM

Delivery is only for medical. Need to go to a dispensary still for recreational. If you want to know the strain you’re buying and to know its been tested for pesticides, etc.best not to buy off the street.

Sign from Above May 15, 2018 at 8:30 AM

A good sit down restaurant is greatly needed in the area.

Silva May 15, 2018 at 9:17 AM

Yes. I’d even venture to say that a good sit down restaurant is desperately needed in the area.

Anon, too. May 15, 2018 at 1:00 PM

Indeed! We have so many fast food restaurants around here, but so few sit down places.

Alejandro Pico May 15, 2018 at 8:33 AM

They really need to upgrade the one accross the street.

Steve May 15, 2018 at 6:03 PM

I couldn’t agree more!

Lela May 15, 2018 at 6:49 PM

I second that! It’s dismal and the Post Office is so old and crowded. Needs a shiny new bigger Post Office and better look overall. Seems to have plenty of parking available. Just filling the vacancies would help, but who wants to move in when it looks so down and out.

Slappy May 15, 2018 at 10:38 PM

That place looks (and drives) like a Bosnian war zone.

Camp Dakota May 15, 2018 at 8:33 AM

Olive Garden please!

Jackson Hammer May 15, 2018 at 10:42 PM

Dominos has better, more authentic Italian food than that dump. Yuck.

Venice May 15, 2018 at 8:34 AM

Thank god! This is way over due. Does anyone know what stores they may be putting in there?

Silva May 15, 2018 at 9:18 AM

When hell freezes over, I think.

Silva May 15, 2018 at 10:49 AM

Sorry Venice. I don’t know what happened there. I thought I responded to a different post, which I don’t see now.

Social Justice Warrior May 15, 2018 at 8:45 AM

wait, they’re going to GENTRIFY one the last Free Spaces in Concord?

Lela May 15, 2018 at 8:48 AM

In and Out Burger or Olive Garden. I’ve given up on Claycord ever getting a Pacific Fresh or any descent fish place.

Mimi (original) May 15, 2018 at 9:13 AM

OMG! Wouldn’t a Pacific Fresh be GREAT!!??!! Loved the one down in Palo Alto (years ago!).

Cowellian May 15, 2018 at 9:29 AM

Claycord could really use their own Olive Garden, and this seems as good a place as any.

I was really disappointed when they closed the Pacific Fresh in Pleasant Hill. Now, I’m a big fan of Bonefish Grill. They do have a presence in California, but I suspect they’re a little more upscale than Treat Plaza.

NoMoreFreeRide May 15, 2018 at 10:00 AM

Pacific Fresh was by the old Chevy’s in Ellinwood. Great place to have seafood and still don’t know why it went under.

JDH May 15, 2018 at 11:23 AM

Yeah the Pacific Fresh in Palo Alto was awesome. In n Out would be a traffic disaster at this spot.

mdfr8s May 15, 2018 at 1:25 PM

There used to be a Pacific Fresh at the spot now occupied by E.J. Phair at Todos Santos Plaza. Closed in the early 90’s. Anyone remember it?

MamaN May 15, 2018 at 1:48 PM

They’re putting a Pacific Fresh in Walnut Creek next to California Pizza Kitchen. Just saw it yesterday.

Kirkwood May 16, 2018 at 10:34 AM

Yep, Pacific Fresh was great, they seemed to be doing ok, I don’t know why they left. The price of fish has tripled since then, I don’t think the area can support the prices they would need to charge today, especially in Concord. Try Scott’s seafood.

Silva May 15, 2018 at 8:54 AM

Somewhere that requires only very limited parking.

T-Rex May 15, 2018 at 9:01 AM

Whatever happened to sprouts that was supposed to go in there?

anonsense May 15, 2018 at 3:30 PM

Im wondering that as well! Mayor?

TheYellowRanger May 15, 2018 at 9:07 AM

Wasn’t Sprouts supposed to move in there?

JazzMan May 15, 2018 at 9:54 AM

They changed their minds. Thanks God! Sprouts SUCKS! At least the WC one. Rotten veggies, lousy “Grab n go” selection.

Marsh Creek Cowlady May 15, 2018 at 1:13 PM

The Sprouts in Brentwood is nice, I enjoy going to it for non-veggies/fruits. Disappointing that a lot of the veggies and fruits aren’t grown in the US. Need to support our farmers here. I’ve also been to a Sprouts in Pinole, which was also a nice store, despite the area. Wish there was a Sprouts in Concord/Clayton.

Always Right May 15, 2018 at 9:11 AM

Another vote for In and Out Burger… and Chick fil-a !

Roz May 15, 2018 at 9:15 AM

Hopefully a nice place to dine,.. maybe not a chain restaurant, or store.
Looking forward to the up-grades. 🙂

aDingoAteMyBaby May 15, 2018 at 9:15 AM

Noah’s Bagels, Sees Candy and a Hallmark Store.

Reality says... May 15, 2018 at 10:58 AM

+1 on Noah Bagels. Have to drive over to WC to get a decent Bagel in the am on Sat/Sun.

Original G May 15, 2018 at 9:15 AM

Without an anchor store or drive thru mail drop off box like the shopping center that had Yardbirds and Longs to attract people doubt many shops would survive. Unless there is a unique store such as the woodworking store a shopping center needs a “DRAW”.

Years back neighborhood shopping center Clayton / Ygnacio, would go there to do shopping and drop off outgoing mail. Since they ripped out the drive by mail drop off boxes seldom shop any of those stores.

Time will tell the owners wisdom of their ‘upgrades’.

tmp May 15, 2018 at 9:16 AM

Sprouts

Cowellian May 15, 2018 at 9:34 AM

Sprouts was planning on moving into Treat Plaza. I don’t know why they changed their minds, but I wouldn’t expect them to try again.

Mimi (original) May 15, 2018 at 12:27 PM

No Sprouts, PLEASE!

Fred May 15, 2018 at 9:22 AM

A new facade and another chain resturant. Don’t we have enough of that already?

Silva May 15, 2018 at 10:46 AM

No chain restaurant!

Paladin May 15, 2018 at 9:33 AM

My vote would go to a good neighborhood gun store. Dick’s lack of support for my rights has meant they will never get another dime from me.

Bad Nombre May 15, 2018 at 10:37 AM

THE ANIMAL May 15, 2018 at 12:15 PM

Screw Shop was great!! He had any bolt or screw known to man. On a side note, get rid of the Starbucks………………………

Kirkwood May 16, 2018 at 10:55 AM

Try J&M Fasteners on Detroit in Concord, I used to go to J&M Fasteners on Mayhew Wy in Walnut Creek a few years ago. Don’t know if they are still there.

KenInConcord May 15, 2018 at 9:55 AM

Bob Wiley May 15, 2018 at 4:47 PM

Or a Plots R Us Mortuary where they always have free parking

Charlie May 15, 2018 at 9:57 AM

Sprouts pulled out. Parking is not great in that center and it is not large enough for a large restaurant. There is already Pasta Primavera and a Mexican restaurant there. Traffic along Treat is awful in that stretch from Clayton Road to Bel Air and look at the mess that Starbucks has caused by going in on the corner. Parking is a disaster.

There is a Housing and Economic Development meeting at City Hall on the 21st to discuss the various shopping centers in town. As of now, it is scheduled at 1:00.

Sign from Above May 15, 2018 at 11:54 AM

Unfortunately, the Mexican place is on the way out. They lost their liquor license over a year ago (who wants Mexican food without a beer or margarita!) and the food has gone down since. This use to be our go to place. However, when we went there last week the place was empty at dinner time, tables and chairs from outside were stacked where there use to be tables with customers, and the food tasted like it was microwaved. Again…..unfortunate. A nice family style (sit down) restaurant about that size would be great. Forget the chains, as the site is too small for anything like that.

Mimi (original) May 15, 2018 at 12:30 PM

First of all STARBUCKS should have never been allowed to build on the corner of Clayton & Treat! That intersection was already a nightmare and now it’s even more so. Secondly, I agree that the quality of the Mexican restaurant has declined a lot over the last year or so – I don’t ever stop there anymore. Maybe a good nail shop with spray tanning booths? That seems like it might be a good draw for all the high schoolers in the area.

Ryan May 15, 2018 at 10:01 AM

Nice! Thank you, land owners, for putting money into one of the dumps around here.
Now we just need the people who own Bel Air shopping center across the street and the lovely named “TJ Maxx Center” strip mall to put some of that money they are making back into the shopping centers.

Bre May 15, 2018 at 1:13 PM

👍🏻👍🏻

AnonZ May 15, 2018 at 10:03 AM

Nice, but wish they’d work on BOTH sides.

What happened to Sprouts going in there? I’d love to see a store like that with good produce.

CONCORD May 15, 2018 at 10:42 AM

What about the shopping center across the street from Treat Plaza. It needs a make over . I can name a view more down Clayton Road. Clayton Road needs a makeover. Its looking old and no one cares to Improve there shopping centers. No new retail wants to move into an Old Shopping Center.

Bre May 15, 2018 at 1:12 PM

Exactly!

AJ May 15, 2018 at 2:12 PM

It’s my understanding that most of these dated ugly shopping centers are owned by the same family, who has had no interest in fixing them up for years. It sure that’s the case with this one that’s getting some facade improvements.

CONCORD May 15, 2018 at 2:51 PM

Treat Plaza was bought out. That is why they can do the remodel.

Yes I agree with you. The families need to keep up with the times. They are the reason why Clayton Road looks so Bad.

Please feel free to call the city of Concord and complain.

sideline May 15, 2018 at 10:45 AM

who is paying for it?

Reality says... May 15, 2018 at 11:01 AM

While they’re at it, maybe they can just bulldoze the “shopping center” on the other side of the street where Staples (??) is. What a depressing sight, damn near on the verge of neighborhood blight. Uggh.

Kentucky Derby May 15, 2018 at 11:14 AM

Most (if not all) shopping centers in Concord. need a makeover. Any nice place will do. Please continue with the shopping center makeovers.

Concord74 May 15, 2018 at 11:23 AM

Forget SPROUTS, Grocery Outlet, and Fresh’n’Easy!!
Cannabis – BIG thumbs down!!! We have enough transient, druggies and generally stoned individuals roaming that area.
No more burger joints, coffee vendors, chain restaurants.

anonsense May 15, 2018 at 3:34 PM

Because the transients and druggies go to the dispensaries?? Duh. Fact is dispensaries hurt street sales and help get rid of them.

Terry MacGyver May 15, 2018 at 11:32 AM

Thanks, already have a house in Berkeley too, I stay in this home while conducting research at CAL.. But also like laying out on the back patio and looking at Oakhurst Country Club golf course. And if some one is worried about the stone drivers, maybe we should pull teenagers over randomly.

This place has been an eyesore for years. Hopefully they can make it more attractive to potential tenants and some quality businesses will move in there.

Zoe’s Kitchen! AMAZING Greek/Mediterranean food that’s quick and delicious! I would DIE if Zoe’s came to the area.

HC May 15, 2018 at 12:25 PM

That sounds awesome! A good, healthy place to eat would be so nice to have. There are too many fast food places!

Michelle May 15, 2018 at 2:40 PM

This would be great too!

Angry Squash May 15, 2018 at 1:03 PM

Trader Joe’s, although honestly that would be better in the CVS center across the street-more parking.

A Mediterranean place sounds great. Any fast/casual place with an emphasis on reasonably affordable and FRESH. No more fast food, we have enough.

We really miss the Coffee Detour that closed there recently. So much better, and easier to get to than Starbucks!

Some type of good restaurant/tap house similar to Eureka or Hop Grenade would be good for that end of town. Possibly a beer garden if there is any outdoor area?

Bee friend May 15, 2018 at 8:10 PM

Concord Tap House is moving into the old Devils Mountain trophy shop in the El Monte shopping center on Clayton Rd. It is supposedly opening this summer sometime.

Hans May 15, 2018 at 2:13 PM

how about a craft store? with Beverly’s gone, those school projects are a nightmare.

Covfee May 15, 2018 at 2:35 PM

Although a little further than Michael’s, Joanne Fabric, and Hobby Lobby, I really like Lakeside Learning Store on Mt Diablo in Walnut Creek. They are focused on educational materials and supplies.

Silva May 15, 2018 at 2:52 PM

Oh, yeah.

Antler May 15, 2018 at 5:30 PM

I agree! And part of the store should sell items handmade by local residents (not the mass-produced junk sold at Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Home Store, etc.)

And do we dare hold out hope for a Barnes and Noble?

Paula May 15, 2018 at 2:18 PM

Yes to a taproom or preferably a beer garden.

Yes to In-N-Out or Chick-fil-A

Yes to Trader Joe’s.

Yes to a good BBQ joint.

Yes to a cannabis dispensary or on-site consumption establishment (although that will not happen based on how/where the city is planning for cannabis businesses: http://claycord.com/2018/04/09/concord-to-hold-public-hearing-to-discuss-commercial-cannabis-overlay-district-within-city-limits/).

No to Olive Garden.

No need for another Mexican restaurant.

anonsense May 15, 2018 at 3:38 PM

Sprouts, Whole Foods or natural grocery store. A dispensary would be cool, although I dont partake anymore. Love the irony of those that think weed is so bad but are in favor of another fast food restaurant! Heart disease is great but God forbid you’re stoned!

Anonymous May 15, 2018 at 4:33 PM

That location might be good for a Dollar General or a Check Cashing store.

BURNBABYBURN May 15, 2018 at 5:10 PM

Would love to see a starbucks, hate to cross the street. Or a safeway, same reason. A burger king would be good, or maybe a little ceasers. Perhaps a togos or a mcdonalds.

Bayarearaises May 20, 2018 at 11:31 PM

There is a burger king across the street and a togos in the shopping center. Neither do too great in business

Mr Big May 15, 2018 at 5:55 PM

Quality seafood, authentic gyros, southern-fried chicken… each would be welcome additions to the area. The very last thing we need is another burger place.

Take togos out. Their manager is rude to their employees and we already have another togos on willow pass that’s way better than the one in this plaza.

Virginia May 15, 2018 at 10:48 PM

Olive Garden would be a nice family restaurant. Great site. They would get a lot of business….

Barrett May 16, 2018 at 9:07 AM

Cracker Barrel, Red Lobster or Olive Garden.

Kirkwood May 16, 2018 at 11:14 AM

It seems like Trader Joe’s would be a good fit anywhere on upper Clayton Rd. If put in Tread Plaza, most of the existing structures would have to be bulldozed and the store built from scratch. It would also draw business to whatever went in around it.

Anon May 16, 2018 at 12:59 PM

Sees candy or Noah’s Bagels would be good. Please no more burger joints!

Consumer D May 16, 2018 at 1:19 PM

Little.Ceasers in that mall does well. The Supercuts needs to be updated. The waiting area of Supercuts has had the same blue chairs for thirty years. The owner of Supercuts doesn’t care to make the place look appealing. Just looks like an out-dated, old salon. Kind of ghetto like. *New* says “we care ❤ about our customers” .

TrevQuinn May 16, 2018 at 9:00 PM

I need more information before making a big hoopla about what goes in and what goes around a shopping center that is pretty much set up to operate as designed.
Where will the drive thru fast food restaurant be located?
Can they make a traffic easement between the fence line where Starbucks and Fast and Easy Liquor Store is?
Will the leases be revoked on the current tennants in order to make changes that are deemed necessary?
When is Video Outlet coming back?
My Opinion, Go Small, No Drive Thru Restaurant, Get Rid Of The Public Storage, Turn Into Condos, Already A Gate, Pot Store Sounds Good Too.
