I thought I was done with all this “first” bullcrup but when I saw that
“0 comments” and …. I don’t know what came over me, I just snapped and typed “first” without even thinking…. like a compulsive gambler!
And now I have that shame & remorse that always follows… sigh…
So I’m just sitting all alone in the dark in my bar at home sipping Jim Beam Bourbon and listening to my Screamin Jay Hawkins albums….
Maybe someone put a spell on me!

Cup of Joe March 16, 2018 at 9:30 PM

Screamin Jay Hawkins? Wow, I had Sirius 50s channel on driving today and they were playing a few of his songs!

Lambie March 16, 2018 at 10:44 PM

😂 Didn’t you have 5 minutes to take ‘first’ back? LOL

I'm The Urban Spaceman March 16, 2018 at 11:45 PM

I recall hearing Screamin’ Jay’s ode to aging, “The Constipation Blues”, a few times in the 80’s on KFOG’s ‘Sunday Night Idiot’ Show, with your host, M Dung.

Dr Jellyfinger March 17, 2018 at 9:57 AM

Lambie…. I had the time to take it back…. but I had to wait to see if I was indeed “first” and when I discovered I was 4th….oh God! 4th! and too late to delete the comment.
I am sooooo lame….. 4th!

I vow… never again!

Silva March 17, 2018 at 11:18 AM

Hey, it’s a great day for gardening and some Screamin Jay Hawkins!! Thank you Dr. Jellyfinger! I bet the neighbors will love it!

Mimi (original) March 16, 2018 at 7:35 PM

Is it possible that I’m FIRST???

WC resident March 16, 2018 at 7:35 PM

No first

Silva March 16, 2018 at 7:59 PM

🍀🍀🍀 FIRST!

Me March 16, 2018 at 8:18 PM

I’m sick of the Clayton Rd Safeway. The employees are so slow… and who came up with the idea that the deli cheeses and meats should all be cut for each order. I stood there today for 15 minutes while he cut one persons order. When they were done I assume s it was my turn, but instead the lone deli employee walked away to the back! I’m done with it. Suggestions?

Cup of Joe March 16, 2018 at 10:10 PM

Yea go to the new Safeway at Oak Grove/YV road. You’ll never go back to that Clayton rd Safeway!

Livin downtown March 16, 2018 at 10:57 PM

I have had many issues with the customer service in the deli at this location. The straw for me was when they reused to cut any meat or cheese at six in the evening. I now go out of my way to another store. I think the issue in this store is management. The small store on Oak Park has the best service of all the locations.

Charlie March 17, 2018 at 8:29 AM

The new Safeway at Oak Grove/YV road is nice but the deli is very slow. Never been to the one on Clayton Rd. so, maybe, this one is faster than that one.

Dr Jellyfinger March 17, 2018 at 9:48 AM

Try the Safeway in Rossmoor!
Slooooowist deli on the planet….
(seems like they’re proud of it).

Of course it’s all a gamble over there with so many oldsters driving around it’s like playing bumper cars in the parking lot…. and in the store aisles with the baskets too.

Just go there once & you will appreciate the Clayton Safeway a whole lot more.

Happy One March 17, 2018 at 9:55 AM

The deli counter switched over to slicing to order when they switched over to Boar’s Head as the main deli brand. It’s a requirement for stores that sell Boar’s Head. I hate it, too, because the wait is much longer. Plus Boar’s Head is much more expensive than Primo Taglio, which used to be their premium brand. I see they have made some concession to customer unhappiness by carrying a bit of prescliced product in a cooler near the deli counter.

The entire store has gone downhill since Safeway got taken over by an out of state company. The checkout lines are longer. The staff isn’t as friendly. The shelves aren’t kept well-stocked. There’s more of an emphasis on processed and junk food, less emphasis on fresh veggies and fruits.

CupOfIrish March 17, 2018 at 2:42 PM

I was at the Safeway on Willow Pass (the worst for long lines and everything else) when an employee said a company rep was in asking to buy people out. She said many of her co-works where happy to get out of there!

WC resident March 17, 2018 at 11:04 PM

Safeway seems to be failing. All of the stores I’ve been in recently are running with minimal staffing. In February they quietly dropped the “low price” slogan and program and raised their prices.

Silva March 22, 2018 at 4:54 PM

I’ve boycotted Safeway since the 90s, I knew too much about all the really dumb doofuses in corporate. I don’t know how quite a few of them put on their own clothes in the morning. Those people are probably all gone by now, but I never got back in the habit. Save Mart put in an enormous quantity of new refrigerators and freezers throughout the FoodMaxx store on Clayton road. It’s really great, except they had to jack up all their prices to pay for ’em I guess. I’ve been going there because it’s convenient, but they did have better prices than Safeway and Lucky. It’s the same stuff as Lucky, lower prices though. Not as low as before. There’s some good new stuff in there, and a bit more variety now. They had fresh turmeric root the other day. I never saw that there before.

Silva March 22, 2018 at 5:01 PM

Oh, and no deli.

ConcordKate March 16, 2018 at 8:21 PM

This is one of my ultimate makes me angry things. I see at least one handicapped parking violation each time I go to the Safeway on Willow Pass. When my elderly mom (using a walker) was still alive and I was shuttling her around in her car (with legit handicapped placard) it made me so mad to see this. Hey Concord PD, please check on the Safeway parking lot. Thanks.

ConcordKate March 16, 2018 at 8:26 PM

Enjoy St. Pat’s day tomorrow. If you’re going to party, get a designated driver. Stay safe, all.

Snickers March 16, 2018 at 8:28 PM

Does anybody know of any streets in Concord that have been repaved since that new gas tax want in to effect, longer for Concord’s new tax.
Just asking

Bluebird March 17, 2018 at 9:59 AM

The repairs may be coming a bit later. I would think after the rains have stopped and it warms up the asphalt materials will be able to cure. I really hope Willow Pass will get scraped and repaired this year from Farm Bureau all the way out to Highway 4.

Kirkwood March 17, 2018 at 10:02 AM

Street repairs don’t begin until July 1 because that’s the beginning of the fiscal year when the money becomes available, and the City can solicit bids to do the work. You can dig around the City website to find what streets will be worked on this year.

Aspirin March 18, 2018 at 9:16 AM

Solano Way near the airport. This was done late last year, I believe.

Silva March 18, 2018 at 10:48 AM

Solano Way! What a shocker that was, after so long.

Open Table lists the Black Angus restaurant in Pleasant Hill as “permanently closed”.

Any updates on this ?

mtzman March 16, 2018 at 11:06 PM

Yelp says it is temporary and is scheduled to reopen May 31 …

WC resident March 17, 2018 at 10:27 PM

Someone recently changed the rat traps and then put a fence across parts of the parking lot. There were some construction worker trucks there a few weeks ago but that was only on on day.

Marianne March 16, 2018 at 10:58 PM

First! lol Happy Friday.

Scoob March 17, 2018 at 6:56 AM

😖I wonder what kind of firearm he’s discharging in a residential neighborhood to shoot squirrels?

Silva March 17, 2018 at 9:12 AM

Atticus Thraxx, I don’t see our list. I hope you’re off having a wonderful time somewhere and can’t be bothered.😉

BOOYAH! March 17, 2018 at 10:37 AM

C’mon Atticus, I’m dyin’ here …

Dr Jellyfinger March 17, 2018 at 9:53 AM

Maybe it is a mental handicap he suffers from.

Chicken Little March 17, 2018 at 10:16 AM

Are these people parking in the blue spaces without a placard or plates? If they do have handicapped plates, how do you know they aren’t legit?

Chicken Little March 17, 2018 at 10:27 AM

I believe (and I’m sure somebody will correct me if I’m wrong) that it’s ok to discharge an air rifle in the City of Concord. Of course, you would still be responsible for using it safely, and I’m pretty sure it’s NOT ok to shoot squirrels.

Dorothy March 17, 2018 at 12:12 PM

No book report as such but I did put in nominations for Hugo awards at the World Sci Fi & Fantasy Con that will be in San Jose in August. In a while, they will let members know which nominations will be up for the various Hugo awards to be voted on. It will be at the Con that the actual winners are announced. Because of WW II, they didn’t have a World Con or give out any Hugos in 1943. So this year Con members also get to nominate and then vote on Hugos for Sci Fi and Fantasy published in 1942. I nominated those I have read and still have in my collection.

y’know the guy in the headgear & goggles that tows a trash barrel & cleans the streets in the neighborhoods adjacent to the northern section of willow pass rd? i wonder what happened that he is where he is? i’ve spoken with him a little over several years – he seems well educated. obviously he’s got some demons but is not raving or anything, nor dangerous. he’s been around here a long time. he never asks for anything, but occasionally i slip him a few bucks.

ConcordKate March 17, 2018 at 5:16 PM

I used to see him all the time, for years. I haven’t seen him recently either. Hope he is ok.

UPS driver going down our street at about 40 just now. I yelled at him as he turned into our shared driveway. His response, “Sorry”. Glad all you Amazon customers can get your packages, I guess you don’t know how they actually get here?

Michael March 18, 2018 at 11:47 AM

Had a UPS driver come rolling through about 30-35 at 8pm on Saturday nigh through 2 blind curves. Had I not been walking to my car I would have thought it was a freight train from all of the rumbling.

Sorry Enfield303, I hosed the link and didn’t save it. I do have this offering:

Sorry Atticus, it was a poor attempt at a joke. Should of said I just don’t see any cows but there seems to be a pretty girl in the clip.

Did anyone else see the 10 military choppers flying over? Pretty impressive.

Those cows are so cute.

St. Patrick’s Day snuck right up on me, and my beef’s still going to be corning a few more days. I found a nice bottle of Guinness in my closet though!

Cowellian March 18, 2018 at 8:36 AM

I was wearing green yesterday, but we are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day today. This afternoon, we have a whole bunch of friends and family coming over for Mrs. Cowellian’s world-famous corned beef dinner.

Ancient Mariner March 17, 2018 at 4:51 PM

Probably not true, Chicken Little.
Most of the cities around here have ordinances stating that you can’t shoot any kind of fire-arm, air-gun, sling-shot, bolt, arrow or anything similar within the city limits. I’d guess Concord is the same.
However, California Fish & Wildlife (used to be Fish & Game) says squirrels are vermin and should be shot. You can’t relocate them – that would be giving someone else your problem. You can’t poison them – the poison would go up the food chain. The say shooting is the way to go – but you can’t use a gun of any sort inside the city limits. So you’re stuck with the squirrels.
Personally, I like them and feed them peanuts in the shell.

ConcordKate March 17, 2018 at 5:12 PM

The cars I have seen have NO placard and NO handicapped plate.

slagheap March 17, 2018 at 6:23 PM

ConcordKate, he’s still around, though i spot him less frequently, too. he was cleaning my street a few days ago. we spoke briefly. i don’t think he’s doing that great, seems worn down from the last time i saw him up close. that’s what prompted me to post initially. don’t know what ails him, but for sure he’s leading a harsh existence.

CupOfIrish March 17, 2018 at 6:36 PM

I was not an Instant Pot pressure cooker believer until today! I cooked a perfect corned beef, with cabbage, potatoes and carrots in a total of 80 mins!

nytemuvr March 18, 2018 at 1:04 AM

Try chuck(pot) roast with spuds and carrots in one, just like Granny’s “Sunday after church meetin’ vittles”, Oohhh doggies!, y’all come back now, ya hear.

Michael March 18, 2018 at 11:41 AM

How is it that the City of Concord does not have crossing guards for their elementary schools while other cities in the same school district have them?

Helicopters March 18, 2018 at 4:16 PM

Anyone see the line of 8 to 10 helicopters flying over Clayton area a little while ago?

Dr Jellyfinger March 18, 2018 at 5:47 PM

Yeah… they’re at my place… my bad.
I just made one little obvious joke about abducting someone in high office….. Geez!

Lara March 19, 2018 at 2:08 AM

So FYI I read the earlier posts about the “Helicopter” that flew over Concord Sunday afternoon. I saw them and there were multiple copters, 16-20 or maybe more. There were 2 rows of them… looked bad ass. 1 Copter – not so interesting. 16-20 Helicopters in formation…that’s interesting. They were flying silent I think. I looked up and saw that they had just flown over and were starting to disappear over the hills towards Antioch. I never heard anything…. …… Duhn Duhn Duhnnnnn…….I bet we will never know ….

Antler March 19, 2018 at 9:41 AM

Does anyone know whether the Air Force maintains a helicopter squadron at Travis?
My best guess is that it might have been part of a drill weekend maneuver… pilots in landing pattern formation being vectored as they were returning to base? I’m sorry to have missed seeing them!!!

Jim March 19, 2018 at 12:29 PM

I took a short video of the helicopters. 9 small ones plus 1 Blackhawk. Pretty ragged formation, but still cool.

Silva March 19, 2018 at 4:45 PM

I wish I could see it.

Antler March 19, 2018 at 8:32 PM

A quick Google search showed that it was Travis Air Base’s C-5 M’s which took Army medivac helicopters and trained personnel down to help in Puerto Rico after the hurricane…… which doesn’t answer our questions one way or the other about what some of you were fortunate enough to see.
I’m with Silva in hoping Mayor will let you show your video on here!

I Found a Video March 20, 2018 at 6:40 AM

Here’s the helicopters that went over the Clayton area on the March 18th however they were now over Elk Grove, CA.

It March 20, 2018 at 12:17 PM

Interesting video, thanks for posting a link. When they went over my house they must have been in a much tighter formation and very low. I didn’t see them, but it was just a very low, massive slow droning sound that went on for what seemed like a long time. They were headed in the direction of Travis, or at least it sounded like it.

Silva March 20, 2018 at 6:10 PM

Very nice! Thank you for finding that.

It, that sounds really impressive.

So cool.

We’re supposed to get snow tonight. I am so tired of this nonsense.

KAD March 20, 2018 at 6:23 PM

Cowellian – I have never seen a City where the weather changes so quickly as it does in Nashville. Tomorrow it will be sunny and be in the 70’s. The day after that there will be tornado warnings and snow the day after. I don’t know how anyone plans anything.

Cowellian March 20, 2018 at 7:19 PM

We dodged a bullet yesterday. We did get some thunderstorms, but the really nasty storms and tornadoes that we were promised dipped south, and clobbered Alabama instead.

Have been looking for last frost dates for Claycord area with mixed results.
Dates vary between late next week into end of second week in April.

Checked and still no volunteers from last year’s garden showing yet.
Night time temperatures still forecast below 50 degrees F thru 3/29.

About when will you start transplanting tomatoes into the garden?
An are you going to try anything different this year?

Macawlady March 21, 2018 at 5:47 PM

I would like to know this as well. Usually we plant our tomatoes in early April, but conditions are still pretty cool. Any experts out there with some advice?

Jojo Potato March 21, 2018 at 9:16 PM

Go ahead and plant them they won’t be hurt unless it freezes really hard and that’s unlikely. As soon as it warms up they will start growing. The exact timing isn’t important.

Justifiable Languor March 22, 2018 at 9:08 AM

You could tent them under plastic each night. If you only have 6 or so that would not be difficult.

Also, put them in the bottom of a deeper than usual hole, I saw mentioned a week back (Original G?) the method mentioned: pull the bottom leaves off as you fill in the hole thus making the roots sprout at each leaf junction.

Macawlady March 22, 2018 at 11:17 AM

Thanks for the advice everyone. Think I’ll be cautious and wait a bit longer before planting. May start some seeds indoors. 😊

Where’s the Chief March 21, 2018 at 6:22 PM

Can anyone explain why the Concord Police Chief has never been in front of the camera and community when his officers shoot at suspects or kill them? It seems that every chief in the state and country gets in front of a microphone and talks to the community he/she was hired to protect when deadly force is used. Just watch local news or visit a news website.
This Chief has been there for what 6 years? Concord Police have shot and killed at least 4 suspects during his tenure. Where is he? Is he afraid that his incompetence will be revealed under the pressure of live questions? Does he even know what his officers are doing? Maybe it’s like his inability to put cameras on his cops, more cowardly leadership.
Feel free to jump on this blog and explain your absence Chief! Can’t wait to hear from you, come out from under your cover.

Fyi March 21, 2018 at 8:19 PM

Cops are getting cameras. We have a great chief.

Where’s the Chief March 22, 2018 at 6:47 AM

FYI your missing it or you don’t understand his job. Hiding when the most critical moments arrive is not ‘great’. Being 4 to 5 years behind in officer transparency is not ‘great’. Going to Rotary luncheons, and hanging out drinking wine with political types doesn’t qualify for ‘ great’.

Original G March 22, 2018 at 2:28 PM

Here’s a video on planting leggy tomato plants. Is from a gentleman from East coast who unfortunately suffered a stroke and is having a slow recovery. Learned quite a bit from watching Bernard’s six years of videos.
