Outgoing County Office of Education Superintendent, Karen Sakata, has officially ordained the unremarkable and demonstrably unprepared Lynn Mackey. as her handpicked successor

Sakata, who was handpicked by the late Joe Ovick to be his successor, and seeing that this is the first time in a number of years that there are a number of candidates – four or more- Sakata is throwing the full weight of her office behind Lynn Mackey. The most egregious move Sakata made which outraged support staff at the county office involves a Deputy Superintendent who “retired” on Wednesday. This allowed Sakata to name Mackey Deputy Superintendent so she can put her new title on her ballot designation.
The worst of this is that many of us here have worked outside the county office on different sites and districts. Mackey has spent her entire career in the county office and has never done anything more strenuous than oversee the juvenile court program.

Over the last four years we have seen insular non-leadership and cronyism that has marred and discredited the County Office as a support for districts in the county. is supposed to serve We have also seen people rewarded with new job titles and substantial pay increases that have little to do with their competence

There are many of us who work hard at the county. But, we are not part of the inner circle sorority who self congratulate and promote one another For us the fear remains that if you step out of line, you will be punished.

It’s time to clean house!

Agree! And bring charges against every legislator who voted for sanctuary city and state status. Also, eliminate federal funding to any sanctuary city and state.

Thank you ClaDen! Born and raised in California and cannot believe what these liberals have done to it. Time to start ejecting them for unsportsmanlike like conduct, if nothing else. Sanctuary cities don’t give the rest of us even a running start.

The LA Times says Mark DeSaulnier has a minimum net worth of – $497,000. And that he has taken out three mortgages totaling at least $600.000 over the last couple years.

How is this even possible for a man of 66 years? I understand that he probably bought a condo in D.C. But that is only one mortgage. Where does his money go???? Where are the other two montages? Is he financing a drug addicted person somewhere? Hey, just asking.

Five armed robbery suspects looking for marijuana grow operations elluded authorities in Novato after several unsuccesful home-invasion robbery attempts in the North Bay. None of the homes the robbers invaded were in any way involved in growing marijuana. Nevertheless, one resident was pistol whipped by the group during the melee. A SWAT team scoured the area putting homes and businesses on lockdown for hours.

I heard there were protesters marching against high rents in Concord this afternoon.

The callous remark would be that if they were working instead of protesting then the rents might not be unattainable.

People need to change with the times. If rents are higher, find a way to make more money or move to where you can afford to live or do both.

Everytime government attempts to manipulate the economy both fail.

A couple of days ago a murder took place in Walnut Creek, a security guard killed another security guard. Walnut Creek PD made it a point to remind residents that murders rarely take place in the city, WC had just one murder last year, and now they have 1 this year. WC is not a hot bed of crime, although they have some crime.
The reason I am mentioning this is because the city I live in, Concord, also has a very low murder rate too. We had one or two last year, as I remember it. While Concord has few murders, and crime figures are fairly low, our PD continually insists Concord is a hot bed for crime, they also claim Concord is infested with gangs. The PD has even suggested MS 13 have set up shop in Concord (not one shred of evidence to back up this claim.We are just supposed to believe what they say!).
I myself have lived in Concord for 66 years, I don’t believe we have an “unsafe” city, yet our PD continually claims opposite. I believe the PD continually claims that Concord is unsafe for the sole purpose of the keeping the PD budget sky high, which it is. The PD budget has grown from 42 million to 60 million in just 4 years, according to City of Concord budget numbers. Half of city employees now work for the PD.
From what I can see their is no justification for these massive hikes in spending on the PD. We simply do not have enough crime in our city to be spending this much, yet the PD budget continues to skyrocket. With all this money being spent on the PD – and when you factor in the lavish Taj Mahal police facility, and the generous pay and pension packages paid to the PD officers, you can readily see why morale at the department is just sky high. Is there a better PD to work for in California? Probably not.
But what about the rest of the community. Why can’t we build a new library in Concord? San Pablo, Lafayette, Walnut Creek, Clayton – all these cities have beautiful libraries, PH’s is on the way. Our library is a dump. San Pablo can build a new library but Concord can’t! Why doesn’t Concord have well funded rec programs like Pleasant Hill and WC? Where is our teen center? Where are the state of the art programs for children and youth? What about arts programs, does Concord adequately fund the arts? Why don’t we have a theatre for dramatic plays like Pittsburg does, or Lafayette does.
In the coming Concord City Council campaigns I’d like to see some of the candidates that are planning to run to address these issues. Isn’t it a fact Concord has been unable and unwilling to steer any real money towards these community enhancing programs, such as funding a new library, or building a teen center, of funding the arts. Isn’t it also a fact the real “reason” for this isn’t because the money is not there, but because we have been over-funding our PD for decades. Isn’t it a fact the PD in Concord has been hogging the whole city budget for as long as anybody can remember? Given our low crime rates does this make sense? (1 murder last year).
It’s pretty clear to me, and it should be clear to people on the council, that our city has fallen way, way behind other cities in terms of providing services to residents. Other surrounding cities are building new libraries, they are building new city halls (Pittsburg, PH), they are providing great recreation programs – PH has three times the number of rec program workers than Concord has!
City of Concord Police officials are doing the community a great dis-service by continually exaggerating crime levels in our community, they are only doing this to keep the gravy train going for the PD. Spending on the PD in Concord is out of control – and it’s destroying the fabric of our city, turning Concord into a city that has no other service but the police department. Sadly, Concord – as a city – has morphed into a city where arresting and jailing residents is the primary focus of the city! The city does almost nothing else. I hope some of these new candidates that will be running in the district elections will address the issue of why other cities can provide services, but Concord can’t.

But the CPD dies not enforce meaningful laws as it is. So if they were to do that, the budget would be much higher.

Concord Police are a prime example of supporting candidates – in other words buying influence. Just like the the NRA, Banks, and hundreds other do at the higher levels. CPD does it in our fair city. They make sure they “own” the council majority. American politics at its finest.

Regarding the CAC BART presentation tonight. The reason that the Pleasant Hill BART ridership is 8,000 a day and only around 2,500 parking spaces is transit to and from the PH station. I lived in Pleasant Hill and rode the bus to from BART every day. I moved to Concord and was forced to drive to from Concord BART. Transit in Concord is horrible.

KAD, small driverless shuttles will replace those big wasteful city buses in the next 5-10 years IF our city leaders allow the private sector to take that business away from the public sector.

Would be a huge improvement, don’t you agree? To be able to track your shuttle coming to pick you up at your doorstep on your smartphone. Pay a little more for a non-stop shuttle, pay a little less to stop along the way to let others get on and off.

Any car or shuttle that drives a single rider does not reduce traffic. A car without a driver is still a car, taking up the same amount of space.

Uber and Lyft have added a great deal of congestion to many city streets.

Also, many Bart riders at the Pleasant Hill station are dropped off by other drivers in cars. The traffic at commute time there is terrible.

The public sector will have to provide some decent level of public transit if all this additional development moves forward. Private sector businesses have no obligation to stay in business. What if a private sector service just decided to shut down? Cities need a reliable transit service.

Door to door driverless shuttles will be very efficient. Uber and Lyft are very popular and when driverless technology is introduced ride prices will drop significantly, making it affordable for low income people too.

The government has a role to play in this in terms of assuring safety and adequate competition, but government run transportation systems in California have proven to be huge inefficient money pits. The private sector can’t do everything, but in the area of public vehicle transportation the private sector should lead the way.

BART trains were supposed to be “driverless,” too. They were to be operated by a centralized computer. Pie in the sky.

Concord Mike – Efficiency isn’t the issue – it’s congestion on the streets. A car is a car and takes up the same amount of space on the road, whether driven by a human or a computer. This isn’t a sci-fi movie where the animators can make everything look like it flawlessly runs masterfully on its own. This is reality. You are relying on your own assumptions that have not played out anywhere.

Thousands of more people equals long driving times and reduces the quality of life for everyone on the area. Not to mention the lack of adequate infrastructure. Do you really want to base transportation policy on guesses at the quality of future technology?

Your assumption on cost is also baseless. Private sector companies find ways to increase costs at peak demands. It would have to be regulated like a utility.

The private sector can’t be required to ensure transportation systems stay in place. There has to be some assurance systems will be available and not shut down with no back up plan.

It was a good thing that BART has learned from their development mistakes.They know you can’t build retail too far away from the station. Not enough foot traffic to make it work. I think the main problem is that BART built the platforms too small. They only hold 10 trains. Businesses need to allow a flexible work time frame for their workers.

Hope, imagine a fleet of 100 driverless electric 8 passenger shuttles traveling the streets of Concord. Always one available to pick you up within 5 minutes and take you anywhere in Concord in under 20 minutes. Maybe 2 or 3 stops along the way to pick up or drop off other passengers. 50 cents a mile. Pay $1 a mile and you get a non-stop ride.

If the idea is to get people out of their cars and reduce overall traffic, I would rather use a carrot than a stick approach.

I am not giving up my car so I can walk 1/2 mile in the rain and wait 20 minutes for a big (and mostly empty) city bus. A reliable shuttle that comes to my door and costs less than my car does to own and maintain would be welcomed.

I’m not seeing your point. First, it’s poor policy to plan transit on transportation that isn’t available yet but you assume will be. Second, the majority of traffic happens during peak hours when people commute to and from jobs. Shuttling around Concord won’t make a dent in that problem. The number of cars traveling over a highway like 242 is in the thousands just during peak hours and that’s why surface streets like Willow Pass Rd are packed during those times. People get off the freeway to try to get around the stopped traffic.

50 cents a mile is a lot of money for someone who commutes to Oakland, SF, or San Jose from Concord.

It’s true that having eight people to a car rather than one would help if that could also happen on the freeway. However, your insistence that you aren’t giving up your car makes my point. If you aren’t giving up your car, what makes you think other people will? This is the same thing I’ve said to Council. They talk about the reason we can add 12,000 people to the CNWS is that most people will be giving up their cars. Yet the Councilmembers themselves refuse to do so – so they are operating on the idea “other people” will do it instead. If you aren’t giving up your car, “other” people aren’t either. People drive their cars around and around San Francisco where public transit is better than here just looking for a parking space.

If we don’t start preparing some type of reliable, affordable public transit to move large volumes of commuters, you will soon be sitting in your shuttle (if this technology happens to be as fancy as you assume it will be – but don’t forget lots of people thought Google glasses would be the next big thing) in traffic at all hours of the day. You may just want to come to downtown Concord but the traffic on the freeway and coming through from nearby areas is what is going to make it a long drive as you add more people. It has all the makings of lowering the quality of life for working class people – wasting hours commuting to jobs. What company would even want to locate at the CNWS with that looming over it, especially if we plan our transit policy on transportation we don’t know will be available?

Hey Concord, I have lived here over 9 years now and for the last five and a half have been extremely upset with the condition of the streets in my neighborhood. I’m not talking a little neglected I’m talking about the city engineer coming out and stating the center of the street is 4 feet higher than the sidewalk. People tripping out of their car and having the door slam in their back. People not being able to get into their driveway to park their car. I went the normal route and contacted the right people and got the answer well there is just no money. Fine I thought to myself it is what it is. Well they just paved another inch on top. I’m extremely upset. If you are not going to fix it PLEASE DON’T MAKE IT WORSE!!! If anyone knows anyone who can do anything about this please help the neighborhood is where Hickory Drive and Birch Ave meet in Concord. The sad thing is if you look closely it is just starting on our main roads too so it has something to do with who is doing the paving and how it is being done. It is going to be so insanely expensive to correct this issue over the whole city if it gets this way everywhere. Anyways any help in this matter is appreciated. David, roads are a problem all over Concord. Since the recession in 2008, many California cities have deferred basic road maintenance.

Although revenues have recovered, the city is paying most of the new revenues toward excessively high city employee retiree pension costs.
