Congressman DeSaulnier: ‘Russia Used Our Social Media Networks to Sway Public Opinion and Elect Donald Trump President’

February 16, 2018 16:05 pm · 110 comments

Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) is speaking out today about the 13 indictments against Russian businesses and nationals for alleged criminal conspiracy to interfere with the Presidential election in 2016:

“Russia used our social media networks to sway public opinion and elect Donald Trump President. The level of detail and intricacy with which this criminal conspiracy was executed warrants immediate action by Congress,” Desaulnier said.

“The Special Counsel’s investigation also must continue without interference from the White House. This is no hoax, it is not fake news. We must take action to protect the integrity of our democracy in advance of the 2018 election,” according to DeSaulnier.

According to Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, there was no allegation in the indictment that the charged conduct altered the outcome of the Presidential Election, and he says the Americans did not know they were communicating with Russians.

Watch Attorney General Rosenstein’s full statement below:

People VOTED on their own free will. and Trump won

LocaI February 16, 2018 at 4:34 PM

Actually, they’re saying the gullible were influenced by foreigners to believe pro-trump/anti-hillary propaganda.

NuMerica February 16, 2018 at 4:54 PM

which again means, THE PEOPLE VOTED ACCORDINGLY ON THEIR OWN FREE WILL, regardless of whether they were “swayed” or not. THE PROBLEM is uninformed voters, not the outcome.

Badge1104 February 16, 2018 at 5:55 PM

If the Russians released dirt on Hillary from her corrupt activities and deleted emails, that’s all her fault! Maybe they were trying to get revenge on her because of her secret uranium dealings for the bribes she collected from them.

Me February 16, 2018 at 5:57 PM

Just like people vote of their own free will in Russia and North Korea.

Greg94528 February 16, 2018 at 6:17 PM

What’s so ironic is that had any Russian influence helped Hillary win , Mark and the Democrats would not be complaining. They probably even say how wonderful it was that Russia and the US are getting along. Boy their hip hypocrisy is showing big time!

Who is this mark dueche? February 16, 2018 at 7:53 PM

@Me – I think you may be delusional

SMariner February 16, 2018 at 4:14 PM

So in other words American geniuses in the tech fields have no idea how to run security and basic firewalls. Maybe Snowden helped them greatly.
Like the USA has never spied and infiltrated other countries social media.

Shame on the hypocrites in America.

It was the polls that swayed and declared Hillary the winner long before the voting took place. The Russians did nothing wrong…

LocaI February 16, 2018 at 4:35 PM

The 13 Russians indicted today all came to America and worked with Americans on American hardware to disrupt our democracy.

J A February 16, 2018 at 5:11 PM

Hooray for those Russian immagrants. Pretty smart cookies. Maybe better border security would help Mark?

Always Right February 16, 2018 at 4:16 PM

More fake news from DeSaulnier.

The Russians also promoted Bernie Sanders, and also organized action against Trump as well as for him.

LocaI February 16, 2018 at 4:37 PM

Fake news? You don’t believe the 13 indictments of Russians today?

Noj February 16, 2018 at 5:36 PM

Did you read the FBI statement?

Millions of illegal votes for Democratic Senators.

Next up…Hillary.

NunYa February 16, 2018 at 4:16 PM

He’s also saying, “they didn’t fall for our lies, and we lost”

NuMerica February 16, 2018 at 4:24 PM

Aspirin February 16, 2018 at 4:36 PM

Apparently many did fall for their lies, and this makes Trump a fake president.

LocaI February 16, 2018 at 4:38 PM

That’s true. The gullible were duped and apparently there are a lot of gullible voters.

NunYa February 16, 2018 at 6:59 PM

It is funny when a liberal tries to use logic. So does a vote get invalidated because the person who cast it was lied to? If so most Democratic voters votes wouldn’t count as they believe the lies of their party. Like Hillary and her email server. Or Obama and Fast and Furious. Maybe Al Gore and global warming, why did he give up on fighting to win the presidency? The lies just go on and on.

Elwood February 16, 2018 at 9:42 PM

Aspirin, local which one of you is the sock puppet?

james graves February 16, 2018 at 4:21 PM

i voted for this guy 😞 im sooo ashamed of myself never seen such a local political clown before😳. i will NOT vote for him again. so minus one vote off your tally Mark.

LocaI February 16, 2018 at 4:43 PM

Why do you have so much shame?

Don’t you want your congressman to protect you from foreign influenced in our elections?

Elwood February 16, 2018 at 5:05 PM

DeSaulnier couldn’t protect anyone from a banana slug.

Serious? February 18, 2018 at 8:14 AM

Local- you want protection for people releasing true information, but you don;t want to protect us from having illegals vote? WOW.

An Awakened Democrat February 18, 2018 at 10:14 AM

I’d like to see DeSaulnier put half as much effort into stopping millions of illegals voting and really influencing our elections. i’m gratified that he’s so interested in stopping foreign election influencing. Start with the illegals Mark. You all realize the the President isn’t directly elected, right?

TIFOKCIS February 16, 2018 at 4:24 PM

The ignorant fools are going to chime in praising this lying moron in 1, 2, 3…….

LocaI February 16, 2018 at 4:45 PM

You don’t have to like him to see that he’s correct that Russia influenced our election beyond a reasonable doubt.

Now proven by these 13 indictments.

Elwood February 16, 2018 at 5:09 PM

Indictments prove nothing.
Suppose the charges are true. There is no proof that the meddling worked or that there was any collusion.

Serious? February 18, 2018 at 8:16 AM

What about Hillary meddling and getting Bernie dropped? I guess it is only ok when it benefits the lying democrats? What about the fake news polls that Hillary was going to win? I am sure that influenced something. What about our fake democrat news that tries to influence people on a daily basis? Why are they not charged for lying?

inmotion February 16, 2018 at 4:33 PM

Once people have their minds made up about an issue, no amount of facts will change their opinion.

Serious? February 18, 2018 at 8:17 AM

Exactly why people still voted for Hillary even when all her corruption came out.

SmileWC February 16, 2018 at 4:36 PM

Hillary sanctioned Russia when she was Secretary of State, of course they didn’t want her to be president. Now for real news -Mark, have you noticed what a distinctly horrible job the FBI has been doing as of late? How does Washington plan to handle this?

J A February 16, 2018 at 5:16 PM

I don’t think that Mark considers himself part of that Washington thing.

scott February 16, 2018 at 4:38 PM

He also didn’t mention anything about what crooked Hilary and the DNC, The FBI, DOJ and the Obama Administration was doing colluding with Russia to keep Trump out of office and take away our voting power. Now that’s Treason!!!! People need to go to jail!

LocaI February 16, 2018 at 4:46 PM

These are excellent examples of Russian propaganda. Thanks for sharing!

Today’s indictments show that the Russians paid for people to dress up as Hillary in a prison costume at trump rallies and the gullible ate it up!

Scott February 16, 2018 at 6:48 PM

Hey Local, the Russians had anti Trump Rally’s too. You should mention that part of the story in your response as well. Hillary actually paid for garbage and used federal resources to try to sway my vote. That’s treason.

Fred P. February 16, 2018 at 9:29 PM

Scott…. local isn’t interested in facts. Most liberals just cherry pick their sources to justify their opinions and pretend it’s the truth.

No demonstrated critical thinking skills.

WC resident February 16, 2018 at 4:39 PM

The Democrats and Republicans spent a combined $6.5 billion attempting to sway the voters. Don’t blame a Russian $7,814.93 program for that one. $7,814.93 is the total the Russians paid for the ads they ran on Facebook and Instagram.

LocaI February 16, 2018 at 4:41 PM

Russia also funneled millions through other organizations such as the NRA, who spent over $400 million on trump.

USA February 16, 2018 at 5:45 PM

I think Local means the Clinton Foundation. Same thing I guess.

Elwood February 16, 2018 at 9:45 PM

OMG, now the Russians are colluding with the NRA!

WC February 17, 2018 at 7:25 AM

The Russia NRA is based upon the fake Fusion GPS document. Nice try though.

LocaI February 16, 2018 at 4:39 PM

Keep fighting the good fight and I’ll keep voting for you, Congressman DeSaulnier.

CSS February 16, 2018 at 5:34 PM

No cure for stupid, keep up the good work…

Cautiously Informed February 16, 2018 at 10:20 PM

The truely gullible ones are those like yourself, who obviously just pick through all massive piles of slanted news from the contemporary National Enquirer like media, to select whatever will support their beliefs and views.

New ears February 16, 2018 at 4:47 PM

Mark needs new ears or needs to be able to read. I guess he didn’t listen to Rosenstein’s speech. Nasty Nancy P. is probably kicking him in the?????

Chicken Little February 16, 2018 at 4:51 PM

How many foreign elections has the United States influenced?

Mariner February 16, 2018 at 5:16 PM

Exactly, America has meddled in every other countries affairs for 70+ years.
USA has spies all over the world hacking into other countries affairs whether they be in that country or here doing it.

It’s okay for America to meddle as shown by Snowden, but wow when someone does it to us is another thing. America bunch of hypocrites.

Silva February 16, 2018 at 6:38 PM

Does that mean we should feel okay about foreign agents influencing our elections?

Justifiable Languor February 17, 2018 at 8:14 AM

I agree! Foreigners should not be involved in elections!

Serious? February 18, 2018 at 8:21 AM

Yes, foreigners should not be involved. Now lets get all the illegals out who are voting in CA! Why are we not more concerned abut them influencing our elections? Because the fake liberal news says it is not a problem? Well, it certainly is when you have seen it with your own eyes.

Elwood February 16, 2018 at 5:14 PM

why aren’t other congresspersons and Senators issuing these stupid statements all the time?
Perhaps they have better things to do with their time.

Justyfiable anger February 19, 2018 at 6:36 AM

Meet our next president elect..? As sure as this is the rainbow state, it could happen.

Larry February 16, 2018 at 5:14 PM

Beyond delusional statement even for a leftist liberal Socialist.

Me February 16, 2018 at 5:55 PM

Thank God that the voting public doesn’t agree with you. I hope you are not actually burdened with living in our beautiful area, it would suck to to just remain somewhere that made you miserable when you have so many other options.

Fred P. February 16, 2018 at 7:26 PM

Actually, a lot of the voting public agrees with him… it’s just there’s a ton of low-information voters that would vote for a rock if it had a (D) after it’s name.

Marky has done nothing except hang onto the coattails of other politicians. That is not leadership. And “issuing statements” is not leadership. And spouting the party line is not leadership. And certainly, his childish “sit-in” with a goofy grin does NOT demonstrate leadership. He’s just another party toady doing what Nancy tells him to do.

Try again, “me.” And everyone has the right to free speech – whether you agree with it or not. So deal with it.

RANDOM TASK February 16, 2018 at 5:23 PM

Uhhhh hey de slacker you and your dem cronies have the media locked up and use them all the time to incite riots sway votes smear gun control and now shame businesses for not getting rid of fast food that children eat because their parents obviously taking them there are forced to give them bad food right

Simple simon de slacker spreading propaganda again yay

Elwood February 16, 2018 at 5:28 PM

Prosecutor indictment ham sandwich Etc

Captain Bebops February 16, 2018 at 5:34 PM

Drumming up another cold war because it makes the money junkies richer? Election influencing has probably been going on for decades way before the Internet. And done by all sides.

USA February 16, 2018 at 5:38 PM

Well well well. Who knew the Russians were pro Hillary? The Uranium deal is all starting to make sense now isn’t it. I’m glad we have a nation where we actually do investigate our leaders. I don’t care much for any politicians, especially those that get rich off the innocent or that of back door good ole boy illegal dealings like the Clintons have been known for for decades. I truly hope she, hubby, and the others involved go to prison for a very long time.

Me February 16, 2018 at 6:00 PM

It’s super weird to be obsessed with a failed candidate over a year after the election. Move on…The only control the Clintons have over your life, is the control you are giving them.

Dr Jellyfinger February 18, 2018 at 10:15 AM

The Clintons are like herpes… they keep coming back.

Mariner February 16, 2018 at 5:53 PM

Hmmm I’m wondering how come I’m not being indicted for saying crude remarks about Hillary and Bernie, posting anti Hillary things, wearing jail Hillary shirts and spreading true crap about Hillary? I was trying to sway the voters as well and apparently it worked.
It’s not only the Russians doing it but millions of Americans as well.

Deplorable February 16, 2018 at 5:55 PM

No Mark, it is the anti-American policies and complete disdain for the laws of our country that you and your fellow democrats have embraced that swayed the mind of voters. Perhaps you should take a hint and put Americans first, you know, the people who have the right to vote, rather than trying so hard to replace us with foreigners.

USA February 16, 2018 at 5:56 PM

For those interested in the in depth truth of the matter –

(I believe this to be the real indictment, but you never know, I may be a Russian spy)

Denier February 16, 2018 at 6:11 PM

So Mark, I sure you will put out a Bill making Voter ID law.
This way there will be no voter fraud going forward.
Can’t wait to read your Bill.

NunYa February 16, 2018 at 7:02 PM

Completely agree, too bad Aspirin doesn’t get it.

Venice February 16, 2018 at 6:27 PM

Do you need any more proof that this person is just one more over reacting knee-jerk twit?
Rather than jump on the latest fake story, how ’bout doing something about crime, do you read weekly the reports right here?
Each day that passes makes me glad I don’t live in your formerly nice town.

Barbie Girl February 16, 2018 at 6:32 PM

Theres no way in Hell I would ever voted for Hillary. If she were the only person on the ballot, I would have written in Mickey Mouse.

NunYa February 16, 2018 at 6:59 PM

Careful, the snowflakes are coming for you.

Jeff February 16, 2018 at 8:07 PM

I wrote in steph curry. Both of them are a disgrace and an outrage that this what the presidential election has come too. I don’t see it changing after trump gets impeached and the 2020 election.

Enquiring Minds February 16, 2018 at 6:45 PM

Why didn’t the Obama Administration do something to protect us from foreign meddling?

Publius February 17, 2018 at 11:05 AM

Obama told Putin” Knock it off!”

Teamster February 16, 2018 at 6:48 PM

Bye Mark!

Foonman February 16, 2018 at 6:53 PM

gotta love it…….reading some of these comments…….

Is this idiot serious? He sounds like the teacher from animal house. “I’m not joking….this is my job!”

Mariner February 16, 2018 at 7:13 PM

DVRd Price is Right today and damn KPIX 5 interrupted twice to report the Russian crap.
Most of us DO NOT CARE! Quit interrupting my TV show.

Mariner February 16, 2018 at 7:14 PM

Well Hillary couldn’t do it at all.
Bunch of Dem crybabies…

no name February 16, 2018 at 8:27 PM

Sad, but not surprising another country would do this. It’s a good thing they didn’t make a difference on the outcome!

Old Timer February 16, 2018 at 8:42 PM

Bull s__t. Had nothing to do with the outcome of the election. We have had enough of your kind of politics. The people have spoken go Trump.

NunYa February 17, 2018 at 7:43 AM

Opps, I evoked God, bring in the courts, start the lawsuits.

Fred P. February 16, 2018 at 9:21 PM

Local has proved in other blogs he’s nothing more than a useful tool of the DNC.

Dr Jellyfinger February 17, 2018 at 12:06 AM

Russians organized an anti Trump protest after the election…. and guess who showed up? The minions…..the useful idiots….the left wing lunatic, socialist, fringe. Duped, or openly colluding with Russians, the left wingers are played for fools.

NunYa February 17, 2018 at 7:42 AM

Too bad none of those idiots were not investigated, or better the puppet masters behind them pulling the strings.

KenInConcord February 17, 2018 at 6:39 AM

All I hear I the “Charlie Brown Teacher voice” when Mark talks.

This IS our President. We voted for him! He won! All this chatter about Russia had no effect on the election. Most of the inditements are for actions that took place BEFORE TRUMP WAS EVEN A CANDIDATE.

NunYa February 17, 2018 at 7:40 AM

If only Markie Mark would read these, then again he does keep getting elected. Must be the Russians. LOL!

Waldo February 17, 2018 at 8:05 AM

Mark –

You never change. You are still a complete jackass!!!!

Justifiable anger February 17, 2018 at 8:19 AM

Oh boy, there is hope, yet.

” …Second, if Mueller’s theory is correct, three things make FusionGPS a criminal co-conspirator: it knew Steele was a foreign citizen; it knew, and paid, Steele to influence an election; and it knew, and facilitated, Steele neither registering as a foreign agent nor reporting his funding from the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign to the Federal Election Commission… “

Rdub February 17, 2018 at 10:17 AM

You guys are so worried about red vs blue you aren’t even paying attention to the bear that is disrupting our democracy. United we stand and divided we fall. Russia knows this and is exploiting it for maximum effect. Anyone worried about dems or repubs are getting played by the ruskies, just by Putin’s design.

Even Mitt Romney, republican extraordinaire knows that Russia is our biggest enemy.

Silva February 17, 2018 at 12:13 PM

NunYa February 17, 2018 at 1:27 PM

Fear is a our biggest enemy. Churchill said that and it is still true today.

Thanks to the Democratic party, who’s only weapon is fear, and maybe the comfy chair, we have a whole state in fear.

caskydiver February 17, 2018 at 11:16 AM

Uh…no. HIllary, by deed and statements, sank herself in the courts of public opinion.

ON DA February 17, 2018 at 11:37 AM

Just say NO.

Nancy Reagan won every time.

concord grape February 17, 2018 at 1:12 PM

Silva February 17, 2018 at 2:13 PM

How Russia turned the internet against America;
And we were dumb enough to let them do it!

Silva February 17, 2018 at 2:18 PM

Ya gotta admire Putin though. He annexed a sovereign land, single handedly faked a referendum in the Ukraine and told the world to swallow it, he vetoes anything he does not like at the UN, and he completely distorted the American presidential election making a lunatic TV personality as our president. Well played!

Enquiring Minds February 17, 2018 at 2:44 PM

Why didn’t the Obama Administration protect us from foreign intervention?
Because OBAMA promised Putin that he’d have greater flexibility after his election.

OverWhelmed February 17, 2018 at 3:54 PM

Desaulner – you are so out of it!

GRX February 17, 2018 at 5:38 PM

Notice how the “Trump-Russian Collusion” is no longer the left wing narrative as it has been for over a year.

Russians (three individuals and 10 companies) meddled for and against ALL the leading candidates.

NunYa February 17, 2018 at 8:09 PM

They just change the narrative whenever the facts come out. After all facts do scare the Democratic party.

Ricardo February 17, 2018 at 8:45 PM

So, if illegal Mexicans voted, isn’t that illegal foreign involvement also.

Fred P. February 18, 2018 at 7:36 AM

Doesn’t DACA include Russians? If not, why aren’t the democrats being called out as racist?

Serious? February 18, 2018 at 8:27 AM

Yes. But that works for them, so…….

Bad Nombre February 17, 2018 at 10:01 PM

Some people can’t help believing that voters are idiots. Sad.

ConcordMike February 17, 2018 at 11:15 PM

“Millions of illegal votes for Democratic Senators”.
I think the Russians took votes from Bernie to Hillary, per Hillary. My two cents. I’m out.

Fred P. February 18, 2018 at 7:41 AM

Influenced by the Russians?

Guess we also ought to take BBC to task. After all, we can’t trust our own media.

Be gentle February 18, 2018 at 9:41 AM

Looks like the Republicans are dummer than I thought. At least we know that Trump certainly did not deserve to win votes honestly. He is a real shark and continues to destroy America! He is ruining our country and the Russians were hoping this would happen. Wakee wakee Republicans!
This is outrageous. I hope they can dig up more. Expect more of the Russian intervention of our future elections. I find it laughable knowing there is no outrage spilling out of the Republicans!!. This is very dangerous. Cannot you see the Russians have succeeded in getting us to devour each other for their gain?

Fred P. February 18, 2018 at 4:51 PM

Trump “didn’t deserve to win votes honestly?”

The “Russians were hoping this would happen?”

First of all, you might learn how to spell “dummer.”

Second of all, you have nothing more than your opinion- certainly no facts and no evidence of anything, other your butt-hurt feelings.

Patrick February 18, 2018 at 3:57 PM

Desalnier is a COMPLETE idiot. Who voted for this clown!

Fred P. February 18, 2018 at 5:37 PM

I disagree – he’s more of an incomplete idiot.

NunYa February 22, 2018 at 4:35 PM

Speaking of colluding with Russia, why haven’t the Democrat’s gone after Google?
