The marble sculpture, “Ratto di Proserpina”, was created in 1622 by a 23-year-old Italian named Gian Loranzo Bernini.
Proserpina is being taken to the underworld by the god Pluto.
(It was a real workout to find out that much of an answer, and I hope someone will take the search further to let us know the Galleria and city where it may be viewed.)
Take care, and thank you for the eclectic list of goodies every week!

Silva February 17, 2018 at 7:20 AM

Lambie February 16, 2018 at 9:20 PM

It appears to be free, maybe it was an ad. Did you try closing the ad?

foothillsguy February 17, 2018 at 7:43 AM

if you run an ad blocker they want you to turn it off or pay.

Shasta Daisy February 17, 2018 at 7:58 AM

I wouldn’t pay for it either but you can read it for free.
But why would you read it anyway when we have Claycord!!!

Cowellian February 17, 2018 at 9:31 AM

If you have an ad blocker, they cover up the story until you either pay or whitelist them. It’s annoying, but frankly, it isn’t worth it to me.

Dorothy February 17, 2018 at 11:37 AM

They have also deleted the Editorial page for 3 days a week. None on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday. When I complained I was told that fact checking is too much work for staff. That was after laying off 3 or 4 staff.

Nature Lover February 17, 2018 at 12:26 PM

I canceled my online subscription to the Eastbay Times this week. The price went up from 4.95 to 9.95 to 14.95 per month over the last 2.5 years while they continued to drop sections or reduce them to 1 page. But hey, they added a Washington Post section on Sunday… who cares.

apollo idol prudence February 17, 2018 at 10:39 PM

Nature Lover – $15 a month??? even still, even $1 , wouldnt pay. So i am cheap, stingy, what have you; wot pay for garbage East Bay times, thats for sure. Dont know how journailism will survive these days, but i can assure you it is not by putting out tripe like East Bay ties; Tim Kawakami got it right and made his own site be cause he knew he is a bettter writer than the quality that East Bay times puts out

Yesterday around 9:45 am there was a MVA that also involved a pedestrian in the crosswalk at the intersection of Port Chicago and Sun View Terrace. I’m surprised there’s no mention of it on here at all. Traffic was blocked from Panoramic down to Floyd as CPD recreated the scene. I was one of the first on the scene I was wondering if anyone knew if the pedestrian pulled through? I know he was in bad shape but my thoughts have been with him.

3 fire trucks and 2 police cars just went up bailey rd. Does anyone know what happened?

Curious February 16, 2018 at 11:54 PM

We heard an insanely loud car (or two) racing down Treat Blvd. It sounded like airplane engines and made everyone in the house stop and ask what it was. Minutes later we heard all the sirens … I’m curious if it’s all related. Same exact timing, just after 11pm.

Antler February 17, 2018 at 12:36 AM

Sean, I don’t know what happened, but I do know that this has been one of the most “siren polluted” Friday’s in a long while…. at least 2 incidents going out Bailey, a car chase sort of pattern near where Denkinger Washboard intersects Concord Boulevard, sounds of speeding vehicles on the boulevard, distant sirens way over on Clayton Road (maybe near the Bailey Road Intersection?). Our first responders have had a real workout tonight! Thanks going out to CPD, firefighters, and paramedics!!!

Susan February 17, 2018 at 1:21 AM

1:05 am heard donuts (muscle car side show) from my backyard off Babel near Clayton road from direction of cowell rd near Canterbury. I hear same sounds usually around 3pm with racing up treat. Truly frightening as I know it’s right at school dismissal.

Tonight’s sounds went on for at least 5 minutes of screeching etc in a residential area, heard a slam, honking of other cars, then intermittent sounds of muscle car revving in what sounded like an attempt to get unstuck. Never heard sirens. Pretty sure it’s the same doh dung car as the 3pm treat offender who could be the one you guys heard tonight. This needs to stop.

Just finished book 1 of War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk, 1978. Good for any WW II buffs. Anyone remember the TV series with Robert Mitchen (sp?) as the main character?

Original G February 17, 2018 at 1:23 PM

IMDb is go to website, just add IMDb to your search terms for movies or actors. I still call it Internet Movie Database.

Robert Mitchum

WC resident February 17, 2018 at 1:31 PM

The public library has the series on DVD. Search for “War and remembrance videorecording” (without the quote marks)

In 2009 I first watched the “The Winds of War videorecording” series and then immediately after that the “War and remembrance” series.

Robert Mitchum stars in both series.

I rode BART today to San Francisco and a group of black punks jumped on our car at Oakland with a getto blaster and started break dancing all over our car. So loud it hurt my ears! A blind lady with a Guide Dog sat in the seat by the door and these assholes were jumping and landing inches from her dog! The lady covered her dogs ears but since she was blind she had no idea they nearly stomped on her service dog. The poor dog looked so upset! Then the punks asked for money from us passengers. They got off at the Oakland stop before the tunnel. There was nothing we could do. It was a scary experience. I prayed for the guide dog and the blind lady. I wish there had been an undercover cop or military on the train to have detained them. Be aware!

Silva February 17, 2018 at 7:51 PM

I can’t ride BART without a pair of earplugs. I never leave home without them.

Original G February 18, 2018 at 10:02 AM

The pack mentality.
One thing greatly lacking in this climate paradise of CA is empathy and civility.

Was privileged over most of the last ten years to have known and talked at length with a man who dedicated most of his life to very effectively counsel youth, some sent him by probation dept. and the Courts.

Was still working into his 70s but retired, confiding youth of today were becoming more violent and callous.

Almost a decade back my Stepson moved his family to Texas not wanting his Daughters to grow up in antioch. He commented on the difference in manners of teenagers and young adults there.
In retrospect the decision to move was that of a wise man.

Just the other day up in Pittsburg a black lady in her 80s getting out passenger side of a truck had dropped her cellphone. She had to wait for a group of 5 teenagers to walk past and not one of them, after seeing the phone on the ground, had the courtesy to pick it up and hand it back to her. But a guy pushing 70 did.

Do wonder when was last time any of those teenagers thought about their fellow man, set foot in a Church let alone sat still long enough to listen and then reflect upon a sermon.

Again sage advice from Silva. I always carry a pocket flashlight and ear plugs both at and outside of work. If you can not carry on a normal conversation at a distance of 4 feet you may need earplugs.
40 years of loud factory work and hearing is still excellent.

PandoraHD February 18, 2018 at 5:50 PM

Jungle mentality. You’ll never see one of them do this solo. It is always in packs…kind of like animals.

Avocados – If you enjoy them, Diablo Foods in Lafayette now has locally grown avocados. Bacon and Zutano Avocados from Golden Gate Nursery. $2.99 a lb.

Silva February 17, 2018 at 10:23 PM

Last year I bought a couple of the biggest avocados I have ever seen there. They were as tasty as a haas, but they were almost grapefruit size. My husband couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw them either. They were 5 bucks each.

Antler February 18, 2018 at 12:16 PM

Thank you, Mary. You always give the best tips!

And longterm thanks to you as well, Silva, especially for your research on the current location of the marble statue Atticus sent us on such a tour to find!

Jojo Potato February 18, 2018 at 12:16 PM

When we first moved up off Homestead in WC I planted a Zutano tree. It was so great getting “free” avocados for many years. Then it got killed by frost, can’t remember which year. But nowadays with less frost if you had the right place a Zutano would do great. In our case it was a dry sandstone hillside, west facing. Look up in your garden book for details. I miss that place, now we’re down in the valley enjoying adobe soil and traffic. Beautiful day today though so let’s go with that.

Silva February 18, 2018 at 7:22 PM

Antler, that was good fun. A breathtaking carving, that. Thank you for the identification and story!

I once had friends who managed an old apartment building on Park Boulevard in Oakland for a while. There were two enormous tall avocado trees on the grounds. They were Haas, and they appeared very old. Every year they rained avocados for what seemed like a couple of months. everyone had all the avocados we wanted. The people who lived there were all sick of them. My friends the apartment managers HATED them, and wouldn’t eat avocados for a few years after they moved, but it was on them to clean them up and attempt to distribute them. It was crazy and sad how many bags went in the garbage.

Ancient Mariner February 17, 2018 at 10:53 PM

Thanks for the avocado tips, Mary Fouts and Silva.
I’ll be plundering DF’s produce section tomorrow!

Jojo Potato February 18, 2018 at 11:38 AM

Here I am sitting at a table in Walden park. A dog runs up behind me and jumps right on the table, on my glasses. No leash, no control. Owner’s comment “she was just trying to give you kisses”. Is there no end to dog owner’s stupidity? Not that I’ve found.

WC resident February 19, 2018 at 8:12 PM

In the eyes of a dog, you are a very kissable old fogey!

Mary Fouts February 18, 2018 at 1:39 PM

JoJo Potato – Thanks for the hint about the Zutano avocado tree; I was thinking about that topic yesterday. I tried growing a Haas avocado tree with no success, but I later realized it was likely the wrong type of avocado for this area. I plan to plant a couple of Zutano trees this year; worth a try.

Antler – Thank you for the kind comment.

Silva – I bet the large avocados you had were Reed Avocados. I really like them. They have one very interesting feature: their cut flesh does turn brown like other avocado varieties.

Silva February 18, 2018 at 7:25 PM

Mary Fouts, they probably were that kind. They did have that unusual feature of not browning when cut.

In case anyone wonders about the small jet flying over Ygnacio Valley Road near Clayton Road at 1,900 feet at 150 plus knots it was an Embraer ERJ-135LR, a commercial flight from Las Vegas.

Silva February 19, 2018 at 5:08 PM

Thanks. It sure was pretty.

WC resident February 19, 2018 at 8:09 PM

Thank you. I’ve been seeing those flights. I have not been looking at the clock each time but around 4:30pm daily there has been a twin engine jet that comes in from the south east, flies over Lime Ridge, and makes a right hand turn in the area to the east of Ygnacio Valley High school. I assume it’s landing at Buchanan Field as it’s lined up with 32R.

I Googled up the Embraer ERJ-135LR and the jet I’m seeing could easily be one. It looks like JetSuiteX has flights from Burbank that arrive at 5pm every day at 5pm though on Sundays its arrival is 4:15pm. shows the schedule

I think the flights from Las Vegas go through Burbank.

Person walking in traffic on PH Rd: Earlier this afternoon, was driving eastbound on PH Rd in Lafayette, encountered black woman in lt gray hoodie walking westbound in the eastbound lanes of traffic, a foot or more away from the center concrete divider. Traffic breaking/swerving to avoid hitting her.

I arrived home 5 min later and called Lafayette PD Dispatch. Was told they were aware of woman, officers had tried to stop her and talk to her, but she didn’t want to talk.

I truly don’t “get” why law enforcement would allow this woman to walk on PH Road in the traffic lanes. All it takes is one step for her to walk directly into the path of a vehicle that will be unable to stop in time to avoid hitting her.

WC resident February 19, 2018 at 7:45 PM

It’s surprising they could or would not 5150 her. It also seems they did not dispatch someone run a traffic break.

Kentucky Derby February 20, 2018 at 8:39 AM

It sounds like Lafayette PD tried to reason with her, and she didn’t want to listen. They pretty much told her – you’re on your own from this point forward.

Just because someone is walking in the middle of the road doesn’t mean she’s 5150. She could be drunk, on drugs, upset, stupid, etc.

If we haven’t read or heard about her on the news – she made it off the road safely. There’s a news site that covers Lafayette.

KAD February 19, 2018 at 10:02 PM

I can’t believe they did not do something to get her out of the road. She made it dangerous for everyone driving on the road.

Keep all three barrels up February 22, 2018 at 9:58 AM

I personally feel teachers should not be armed. Who is going to be accountable if they miss their target and accidently shoot a child? The teacher, the school district? YOU are responsible for wherever or whatever that bullet hits or goes. Teachers all ready have enough to deal with. Hire ex law enforcement or Military.

Justifiable Languor February 22, 2018 at 10:35 AM

The community warned the authorities.

The FBI are both armed AND trained.
The FBI knew about the complaints and background of the shooter.
The FBI refused to act on the information.

The teachers do not need to be armed.
The FBI needs to act of information that threatens the community.

AlwaysBePositive February 22, 2018 at 3:50 PM

jl…I think we need to cut the FBI some slack. According to a former FBI field agent (sorry, can’t remember where I heard the interview) it is quite possible that the Broward County field office of the FBI could have received almost 200,000 tips involving physical violence in the previous year.

Original G February 22, 2018 at 4:46 PM

Ah, Ha … that’s what is wrong !
It’s all your fault for not effectively communicating.

I’m sorry but there are some of us which require extra, extra effort when requesting us to do things.

Original G February 22, 2018 at 4:57 PM

“Handguns are not accurate.”

“This is the police sergeant who fired a crazed gunman square in the chest from 312 feet away while holding the reins of two horses in one hand.

Adam Johnson, of Austin Police Department in Texas, was on mounted patrol at 2.33am when Larry McQuilliams tore past him firing more than 100 rounds at buildings using AK-47 and .22-caliber rifles.”

“I’ll bet that most teachers will not want to be armed.”

“Hundreds of teachers and school employees in an Ohio county have signed up for a concealed weapons class their sheriff offered in response to last week’s deadly shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school.
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones announced the free training on social media on Sunday evening and said there were 50 requests in 20 minutes.”
‘More Ohio schools arm teachers to shoot attackers’
‘Colorado to arm teachers in classrooms’
“The training comes from a group called FASTER, which stands for Faculty/Administrator Safety Training & Emergency Response. According to the group, it formed as a response to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.

Each participant received about a $1,000 scholarship from Coloradans for Civil Liberties, a second amendment rights group, to attend.”

WC resident February 22, 2018 at 7:57 PM

@Original G – Adam Johnson’s 312 foot (104 yard) shot was widely reported as a lucky shot as handguns are not accurate.

@Aspirin – while handguns are not as accurate as long guns they are accurate enough to be used in a classroom. Also, they would be more desirable in a school setting. A round from a long gun will easily go through the suspect and then several walls and/or doors increasing the chances of hitting someone else. A compromise is to use a shotgun.

@Keep all three barrels up suggests “Hire ex law enforcement or Military.” Stoneman Douglas had an armed school resource officer on campus at the time. His response to the shooting was to stay outside the building and watch one of the doors. He was fired though I see it as a no-win situation most of the people who run into an active shooting scene end up wounded or dead.

@Always be Positive re: ” I think we need to cut the FBI some slack”

A government agency is required to follow up on a well recorded threat.
The FBI has been implicated in mishandling data since before 9/11.

Kentucky Derby February 23, 2018 at 9:27 AM

I like the cold weather. After all, it’s winter. It’s not like we’re shoveling our way out of the driveway to go to work in the morning.

Earthquakes I can do without.

MontyGardensGal February 23, 2018 at 10:28 AM

Anybody know what happened to Marron House thrift store on Willow Pass? I donated many items to them after being impressed with their mission (helping aged-out foster care kids). Recently I noticed that they are closed, and I’ve gotten several different answers from folks hanging around the store, which is now totally empty. One guy told me they were moving, but didn’t know where. Another said they were “remodeling”. Seems a bit shady….

AlwaysBePositive February 23, 2018 at 12:06 PM

I don’t disagree with you however…have you ever worked for a place that had too much work with too few employees? That is what I am referring too. Also, we don’t know that they didn’t respond to other threats that may have resulted in even more deaths.
