Man, barking dogs suck.

Ruff Ruff February 9, 2018 at 9:31 PM

We have about five neighbors with 10 dogs total. One or all of the dogs are barking everyday. I don’t blame the dogs it’s the owners that are idiots. The city, animal control or police won’t do anything about them.

NunYa February 10, 2018 at 5:42 AM

I completely agree. It is the owners of dogs like these that are the problem. Dogs are pack animals who follow an alpha. These owners have no idea how to be that alpha. They give the dogs ambiguous commands like don’t! or stop! and then let the animals do whatever they want. Unfortunately there is no way to tell the owners that they are the problem. Although I have thought maybe a dummy’s guide to dog ownership left on the doorstep might be big enough hint. Anyway, just tired of the noise, so I said what I said.

California SUCKS!!!

NunYa February 10, 2018 at 5:44 AM

Not sure about this but California doesn’t suck. The people running the state are idiots. Democrats and morons. It appears that over 50.1% of the state either pay no taxes or are illegal aliens and so vote Democrat to keep getting a free handout. Yes, thanks to the courts illegal aliens can now vote.

AlwaysBePositive February 10, 2018 at 7:56 AM

Actually, that’s gravity. You’ll find it everywhere, not just CA.

AlwaysBePositive February 10, 2018 at 10:35 AM

ny…sorry, you are incorrect. Undocumented immigrants do NOT have the right to vote.

Jojo Potato February 10, 2018 at 11:27 AM

yes, just because the DMV sends your information to the voter registrar doesn’t mean you get to vote. A person still needs to prove citizenship in one of the usual ways. There was a recent FOX news report about this that you may have confused you.

Dr Jellyfinger February 10, 2018 at 12:06 PM

Always Right February 11, 2018 at 3:25 PM

Illegal Aliens do not have to vote to help get democrats elected.

They are counted in the census, and the census is the basis for Federal congressional and state assembly representation.

Several new congressional districts have been created here in California in the last 30 years (all democrat) just because of the presence of illegals.

If all the illegals and their children decided to leave the country next year, when the 2020 census completes the democrats would loose
30 -40 seats in the House.

Justifiable Languor February 11, 2018 at 5:34 PM

Illegals get counted for State representation in the House?
No wonder California never has enough money. Illegals are sucking up all the tax moneys in so many ways. I wonder how many millions 30-40 members in the House cost us?

Anybody know what happened on concord blvd tonight? CPD had it shut down at denkinger

Momo February 9, 2018 at 10:29 PM

Car accident between glazier and Denkinger.

Antler February 10, 2018 at 2:02 AM

The accident was where Glazier Drive traffic enters at a blind curve into Concord Boulevard. The impact pushed vehicles toward the entrance to Lilac Court. Many neighbor’s called 911, and first responders started arriving within 4 minutes…. first CPD, then the fire truck from Clayton Road, then emergency medic vehicles and more police. Neighbors diverted Concord Boulevard’s westbound traffic to turn left onto Glazier; police re-enforced that and then also diverted Concord Boulevard eastbound traffic to turn right onto Denkinger Road. We did not hear sirens transporting away from the scene, and I cannot report re injuries or fatalities (as have occurred many times at this same intersection).

Kentucky Derby February 10, 2018 at 9:45 AM

Glazier Dr. does enter into a blind curve on Concord Blvd. Turning right is safe, but if you want to turn left onto Concord Blvd., turn left from Mendocino, Denkinger or West. It’s worth the extra effort (the back streets) to turn safely onto Concord Blvd. at a light.

Antler February 10, 2018 at 1:04 PM

Kentucky Derby gives excellent advice re places where signal lights can help you turn safely onto Concord Boulevard. There also is a signal at Thornwood (only a short block from where Glazier Dr. enters the boulevard.
HOWEVER, it is not safe….. NOT safe …. to turn right from Glazier Dr. Into Concord Boulevard!!! It is a blind curve no matter which way you plan to turn! One fatality and some serious injuries resulted when a vehicle southeast-bound on Concord Boulevard hit another vehicle turning southeast from Glazier Dr. onto Concord Boulevard. In turn the vehicle exiting Glazier slammed into a black sedan which was going in the opposite direction (toward downtown Concord). The impact was so strong that it killed the sedan’s driver, a young woman from Clayton.

Sorry if compass directions are confusing and seem to be contradictory between Dr. Jellyfinger’s descriptions and those of others. The map will show that leaving from downtown on Concord Boulevard, the two main turns making the boulevard finally go southward are at the Landana intersection (Dana Plaza) and again, even more sharply, at the Glazier intersection (where so many serious wrecks have happened).

Many of us in this area have urged City of Concord to block vehicles from turning AT ALL from Glazier Drive onto Concord Boulevard because of the blind corner. Lowering the speed limit on that stretch of the boulevard has proven fruitless; it remains a racetrack because of drivers leaving the Denkinger Rd. light and trying not to get “caught” by the next signal light.

Years ago, the neighbors’ appeals resulted in the installation of the traffic signal at Thornwood, but that still never has directly addressed the curve/sightline problem at Glazier Drive.
I have even seen school buses make a left turn out of there! Get real! Being big and bright yellow does NOTHING to stop a Concord Boulevard vehicle going 45mph (or more!). And do those buses even have seat belts for the children as yet?

Kentucky Derby February 10, 2018 at 2:00 PM

Antler – You’re right. Turning onto Concord Blvd. from Glazier Dr. isn’t safe from either direction, but more dangerous turning left (crossing traffic).

joatmeal February 10, 2018 at 7:37 PM

Antler – The accident you described happened on Friday evening?

Nothing but the Standard Daily chase. There was another one yesterday around 2:30pm – Oakland PD and about 50 others chasing a green chevy avalanche into Antioch.

WC resident February 9, 2018 at 11:41 PM

Regarding the arrows. I took some pictures in July 2015 and so posted them to

This is a US Air Mail Service waypoint installed in the 1920s in Walnut Creek at 37.902661, -122.078116. It is in the Acalanes Open Space which is open to the public. This is not the same park as the Acalanes Ridge open space which is a bit to the north. To get to the Acalanes Open Space drive past 1215 Bacon Way, Lafayette, CA 94549 to the end of the road. There are two parking spaces on the left. Go through the gate that leads uphill (on the right side of the road) and continue along the wide graded path. Eventually you will see a clear path that branches off to the left and goes uphill. Take this path.

The waypoint is at the very peak of the hill. The central square platform is level and used to have a 50 foot tower with a light on top. The arrows and other square platforms slope downhill from the main platform.

I wish I had a drone as I was unable to get an overview of the platform with the arrows.

This waypoint has two arrows. The right hand arrow appears to point towards the Concord Airmail airfield that was on the northeast corner of Treat and Clayton Rd. See for pictures and comments about this airfield. I think the right hand arrow was to help westbound pilots that were lost. This hill is high enough that the fog does not cover it. A lost pilot would see the beacon light and using the arrows know where the airport was.

I could not tell where the left hand arrow points. It is pointing directly at Buchanan field but that airport did not exist in the 1920s. The arrow also happened to be pointing directly at Sherman Field in Pleasant Hill. I did not think Sherman Field was ever used for airmail though it may have been an emergency landing site. It’s also possible this arrow pointed the way to an airfield at at near where Travis Air Force base is.

In the 1920s westbound airmail ended in Concord as San Francisco and Oakland were often covered by fog. They put the mail on a train to Oakland and then SF. Eastbound airmail would start from Crissy field in SF and would fly to the Walnut Creek waypoint and from there vector to the Sacramento area.

Shasta Daisy February 10, 2018 at 8:59 AM

WOW!!! What a great site, I bookmarked it.
Thanks, WC resident.

You took some great photos.
Colorful graffiti.

WC resident February 10, 2018 at 2:08 PM

@Shasta – Pleasant Hill’s Sherman Field’is visible on 1) Go to and enter 37.948809, -122.056196 in the search box. You’ll see it’s a bit north of the shopping center now known as The Crossings (formerly where Montgomery Wards and the dome theater were. 2) Scroll down to the bottom of the “Aerial” section on the left and select 1946 which is the oldest date available. The airfield with some aircraft by the hangers should be visible.

The Concord airfield was on the NE corner of Treat and Clayton Rd. at 37.969576, -121.995208 However, that’s an empty field in the 1946 image. 1943’s topo map shows some large buildings on the south side of West Ave that may be hangers. The shape of that field in 1946 matches what’s at and so I’m pretty certain I have the right spot.

The Concord NWS airfield is to the north at 37.990093, -122.018903 that’s visible in 1946 on into the 1970s. is part of an airway map from 1933. Of interest is that old Concord airfield is marked as 2A and the airmail beacon on the Acalanes hill where the concrete arrows are is marked as 1B. There may have been another beacon with arrows at 2B. It seems to be in the hills between Clyde and Bay Point and may well still be there as that area was never heavily developed.

Frank February 10, 2018 at 5:29 PM

Left side arrow aligns with a pad next to the cell tower site at
38 deg 01’48.05” N / 122Deg 00′.07.42” W. The distance is appropriate for the usual spacing between route markers of the time.

Fritzhugh Ludlow February 10, 2018 at 10:35 PM

Every thing old is new again…Travis Airfield is named for General Travis who was killed there in the late summer of 1950, while commanding 10 B-24s headed the Korean War with Mark-4 Atomic Bombs….The bombs lacked the Plutonium Cores, but the explosives needed to cause an atomic reaction burned up in the crash of His plane…Travis Air Force Base was later named for this “First General killed by an A-Bomb”.

WC resident February 10, 2018 at 11:27 PM

Thank you Frank. I’d seen that very spot earlier, and there’s there’s a light colored rectangle there in the 1939 image available in Google Earth. I’ve been calling that site the Clayton Valley High school radio transmitter as the KVHS tower is there now.

Though it’s a nice hill that seemed like the perfect location for the navigation tower I’d dismissed it as two of the maps I looked at showed the airway beacon as being to the east of the 122 degree west longitude line and this location is to the west.

I found more maps that show that the navigation tower is to the west of the -122 line that also seem more reliable than the maps I’d looked at earlier.

For those that are interested, the location in Google maps is 38.030022, -122.002062 or,-122.002062

Google Earth’s 1939 map is 17.2 feet out of sync in this area. Use 38.029996, -122.002012 in Google Earth and select 1939’s image.

I believe the rectangle that’s visible is the concrete pad for a tower. There is no evidence of direction arrows. for 38.030022, -122.002062 in topo mode shows “Airway Beacon” at the top of the hill for many of the years from 1942 to 1986. The map is black on the right hand side for many years as it cuts off at the -122 degree longitude line.

Thank you Fritzhugh for the background on General Travis. This was not the only era where we had the fat finger tapping restlessly on the button over North Korea…

Any merchants or lawyers out there? I want to do a charge back (dispute) on my Visa credit card. I paid for the newspaper and have never received it. Can I do a charge back? Thanks for any advice.

WC resident February 10, 2018 at 12:40 AM

You must send a dispute letter within 60 days of the first statement that contained the the charge. If you are still within that window the credit card statement should explain how to initiate a dispute.

Mary Fouts February 10, 2018 at 3:11 PM

KAD – You can dispute charge thru your Visa. I’ve done this with my Amex and a Visa; have never needed to submit a written request. Called Visa and lodged dispute. Amex has easy way to file dispute online. All times charges were reversed in my favor. Good luck!

Dear Mayor: Re multiple names.

In a new thread I will sometimes use an anonymous because of privacy issues (I have been stalked in the past). Yet sometimes I am unable to post. Then, after the unpostable post, I am unable to post in any thread whether or not I use my regular name. For a few days at a time.

I have tried to communicate in private, to no avail. Do you ban IPS addresses? I don’t feel any of even my most contentious posts, are anywhere near threatening. More likely they will mimic the tone of a threads’ diverse responses. Hope you get this one.

WC resident February 10, 2018 at 11:39 AM

The rulers of Claycord ignore many e-mails but also seem to read them and will reply back if something appeals. They also either don’t mod-allow or quickly mod-delete posts at random. The posting system has a spam filter that I tripped at least once. A quick e-mail to the dungeon master got it released and approved. Other e-mails from me get ignored. I doubt your getting ignored was directed at you personally.

I assumed multiple names are allowed except on talk-about-whatever and related threads. I suspect there are bugs in that code in that once you get detected and banned that you can’t post in any thread.

A good way to maintain anonymity is to use a common name. For example, I’m not the only one that uses “WC resident”. If you live in or near a water closet or the city of WC then you are welcome to share WC residency with the rest of us or can use “anon” which some people use.

elviss February 10, 2018 at 1:30 PM

I agree. I have had death threats, so my privacy in posting is of the utmost concern to me. I decided recently that I would stop posting because I cannot use multiple names to conceal my identity. No one wants to chat with me anyway, the reason given in the instructions at the top for the one name rule. So, I don’t see the problem. I rarely post anything at all controversial compared to some of the others here, and I have contributed generously (and had planned to contribute more) to the Claycord Museum, but, whatever. I feel used!

Cowellian February 10, 2018 at 1:49 PM

I’ve always been a fan of each person having one name on Claycord. I was just another anonymous poster when I first got here, but I’ve been Cowellian for over a decade. The few times that someone has impersonated me, the Mayor, or one of the moderators, has always deleted it when I asked.

The rule about not using multiple names seems to have happened after Claycord flushed “the Gang with Only One Brain” troll.

Ti J A February 10, 2018 at 2:47 PM

I ran a blog using Wordpress. If your ip address was “banned” you would not be on Claycord right now, under any name. Also posts may automatically go to spam. The filter isn’t perfect. Don’t take it personally. I don’t believe the Mayor is modifying comments either. Even correcting spelling within a comment is time consuming, especially day after day. I doubt he even reads most of the comments.
Sit back and look at the big picture. The other day there were at least 400 comment about the guy with the assault rifle. That’s under just one article. They can’t read them all. Overall I think Claycord is a great local news source. i don’t even read the political comnents. Too much name calling.
its open for business seven days a week. That gets old fast. It did with me. That’s one reason I quite doing it.

Kentucky Derby February 10, 2018 at 3:05 PM

I blogged here years ago under my first name, but it’s a common one, and I’m more comfortable with Kentucky Derby. I’ve never seen it on a blog, so maybe I chose a safe one.

I can see why any blog wouldn’t want you to use more than one name. Trolls will use several names to harass someone.

I’ve never been stalked or harassed, but as a woman I can see why it’s a concern to some. I wouldn’t worry about anyone on this blog. Unless you’re using you’re real first and last name, nobody knows who you are.

I remember the “gang with one brain” and how it drove Cowellian insane. Probably kids on their iPhones.

I would guess that any blog would ban IP addresses – if necessary.

What people need to keep in mind when wanting to use several names. If someone wanted to give you a hard time, they could do it whether you used one name or several names. The internet is anonymous, and there is no such thing as privacy. We all chose to blog with total strangers.

The Golden Rule comes to mind…

Maybe it is my online carrier. In any case, thanks again.

Do you have anything in your archives on the SLA house on Sutherland in Concord?

Kentucky Derby February 12, 2018 at 4:08 PM

My sixth period class at CHS was PE – bowling at Clayton Valley Bowl. We used to cruise by Sutherland Ct on the way. I don’t what we thought we were going to see, but having the SLA “in town” was rather intriguing. Not a lot was happening in Concord back in the day…

Original G February 12, 2018 at 4:35 PM

Those of us who were around back then were shocked to learn cyanide tipped bullets had been used to assassinate Superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District. Had totally forgotten about the Concord connection.

Mika February 12, 2018 at 8:18 PM

Concord was a lot quieter and smaller in those days, correct?

Kentucky Derby February 12, 2018 at 8:52 PM

Smaller – It was close to 100,000 when I was in high school in the 70s. Concord really grew from the 60s to 70s, and was over 100,000 by 1980.

Quieter – Definitely. Back in the day, Concord lacked diversity, gangs, etc. With the exception of a little activity in the Monument or Solano areas – there wasn’t much crime. Shoplifting at Sun Valley, a little drug activity. Occasional residential burglaries. But nothing like the Concord you see today, and the reason so many old timers complain how things have changed.

Silva February 12, 2018 at 10:57 PM

It was really hard to imagine how those people were able hang in that quiet little neighborhood. They wouldn’t have come and gone unnoticed, they didn’t exactly fit right in. They sure trashed the house.

There are certain times and circumstances in which it is better not to ask us to do something for you. If you absolutely must ask, please pick your words carefully for there are times when our logic is not the same as yours.

We didn’t have school shootings in school yards in the 70s, but we had assassinations in the 60s and serial killers in the 70s. That certainly hit the news. The last clean decade was the 50s, and to some – the 50s was a horrible decade. It was prior to the civil rights act.

Tell me about it. I was upfront and center during the school bussing experiment. The expectation was, just throw the kids together and they will find a way. The trouble makers, as always, spoiled the attempt. The kids raised with the ‘golden rule’ were easy prey for the ones exposed to every insult to sweetness and light. Tragic.

Theft, stabbings, beatings, rape. There were bathrooms and corridors one did not visit. Or else.

Speaking of bussing, I remember a friend of mine at Mt. View Elementary who wasn’t allowed to go on our fourth grade field trip to Mt. Diablo because of Zodiac. He was threatening to wipe out kids on a school bus.

If it was today’s society, there would more than one mom who wouldn’t allow her daughter on the bus. It would be the norm, and the field trip probably would have been cancelled.
