2 books. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austin just isn’t as much fun as Pride and Prejudice. I think I’ll pass it on even through it’s part of a set of 3. The Crown and the Cross by Frank G. Slaughter, 1959 is a cross between biblical and historical fiction. Okay but not a keeper either.

Started volume 1 of War and Remembrance. That’s going to take a while to go through it. I did enjoy the TV series based on it some time ago.

KAD January 19, 2018 at 8:16 PM

Nobody lasted. I had family visiting and after they left I got to spend some time on Claycord. I tried to last but comments were closed.

Thanks Shasta Daisy.

Name the City?
OK, here’s the thought process:
Zoom in and I see pavement markings that are Chinese or Japanese (not fluent, so I can’t tell which).
I see headlights coming towards me, driving on the right, so it’s not Japan (they drive on the left).
So I’ll go with Macau or Shanghai.
Close, Atticus?

Ancient Mariner January 19, 2018 at 9:50 PM

Yes, mouthwatering … why’d they always show the ’21 in a violin case?

PitstopPenny January 19, 2018 at 10:16 PM

What’s up with the Taco Bell on Clayton Road ?
Only the drive thru has been open, a couple times it was closed completely during the day.

Anonx January 19, 2018 at 11:46 PM

I heard their having plumbing issue!lol

Silva January 20, 2018 at 8:29 AM

That they have plumbing issues doesn’t surprise me. In fact, I already knew they did. Not anytime recently but over the past few years I’ve been in there two or three times with my husband as he ordered food for himself. Walking in the door I was hit by the aroma of sewer gas. I don’t eat fast food, but I sure wouldn’t eat food prepared in that kind of atmosphere. He said he didn’t smell it, but I sure did.

Kirkwood January 20, 2018 at 9:58 AM

The takeout window is open, the guy told me that there is remodeling doing on.

Marmalade January 20, 2018 at 5:09 AM

YaYea after Taco Bell we all have plumbing issues!

That taco Bell has the slowest service most times. I’ve waited 15 minutes when only one other person before me at drive thru and inside, while other times it’s fine. Very unpredictable there.
Totally different food down here compared to our Tahoe eating habits, so when down here we hit the not so good for you places…

Since Christmas two CHP Officers have been seriously injured. One last night in San Jose, one on Highway 4.One Officer killed on Christmas near Hayward .

All by drunk drivers.

Know this if you are on a jury. Practically all DUI trials are for people with prior convictions . You are never allowed to know about prior convictions as a jury member. Not fair to defendant.

Mary Fouts January 20, 2018 at 11:37 AM

CC Canal – Noticed large school of fish in the canal late this morning. Trapped in shallow water and in distress. Probably 4 dozen, a few Koi fish the rest looked like cat fish, including a few big ones.

Called CCWD. Nice lady said crew already on way to remove and relocate the fish, but didn’t have exact location. I was able to provide that. She said the have been removing and relocating fish from canal all week.

Shasta Daisy January 20, 2018 at 5:14 PM

Thank you, Mary Fouts!!!!

Silva January 20, 2018 at 5:54 PM

Oh my gosh! That’s so nice of them, and you too, Mary Fouts!

Thank you Mary. The fish rescue guy was there around 3:45pm. is photos of him trying to catch fish plus the birds having better luck.

Went to the 99 cent store on Clayton Rd that parking lot is disgusting. You would think the owner would hire a cleaning service.

Anon 2 January 21, 2018 at 9:21 AM

That whole shopping center is gross and has been for years. The city should demand improvements before approving any new use or remodels there.

Pony January 21, 2018 at 9:29 AM

Over by 99 cent its the worst. The Bailey side is cleaner, just needs some restripeing. But that will be ghost town side once Beverlys closes down

Silva January 21, 2018 at 10:36 AM

These are some lovely photos of a couple of good friends;

Silva January 21, 2018 at 12:36 PM

Ooo! Here’s another something cool! On January 31, around midnight, the full moon will not only be super, it will be a blue moon and a blood moon!!! Hope it’s a clear night!

Aspirin January 21, 2018 at 11:03 AM

The shopping centers on Treat at Clayton are almost as bad. The center with CVS Pharmacy is half full and shabby to boot.

Are there City codes governing the maintenance and appearance of shopping centers?

KAD January 21, 2018 at 3:42 PM

If there are no codes, there ought to be. The City needs to do something about this.

Hope Johnson January 22, 2018 at 5:46 PM

The topic of addressing revitalization of the retail centers is on the agenda for Council tomorrow.

KAD January 23, 2018 at 5:14 PM

Hope – Thanks. I saw that too. I was wondering if this was going to be addressed.

Kentucky Derby January 21, 2018 at 4:40 PM

If I was a resident of Concord, I’d find out. If so – stay on the city like white on rice until they do something about it.

If there aren’t any codes, where you shop is optional. The looks of most shopping centers are sad. What the heck ever happened to Concord?

Mary Fouts January 21, 2018 at 10:19 PM – any chance you could add a daily puzzle/crossword to your blog?

Thank you for your consideration. Mary Fouts

Justifiable Languor January 22, 2018 at 11:24 AM

I agree.

Jojo Potato January 22, 2018 at 12:48 PM

Just rode along the CCcanal trail between Oak road and Jones road. One white heron/egret and seven mallard ducks feasting on the fished trapped in the small pools left by the annual canal maintenance. Did I call the water company? No. I let nature do it’s course. That’s the right way.

Silva January 22, 2018 at 1:53 PM

Lucky day for the beautiful birds then.

Silva January 22, 2018 at 1:52 PM

This one was one for the books! Last Tuesday a small package I was expecting showed “Delivered in/at mailbox”, but I got the mail as soon as I heard the carrier put it in the box, and it was not there or anywhere else around. I called the Post Office and explained the situation to Arnold, who was very nice and took down my info, and told me to call back Wednesday. I couldn’t get through either Wednesday or Thursday, and as it had still not arrived Friday I went in to the Post Office. The person at the counter looked for it in the back for a while before assuring me that my package was definitely delivered. She gave me a photocopy of a photo of where the mail truck had parked that day, and a phone number to the Consumer Affairs Dept. The package was insured, but since they showed it as “delivered” there wouldn’t be any compensation. Saturday I had a conversation with the carrier, and he said that he had only delivered one package (there had been another one that was delivered), and that he may have scanned it 2x by accident, which I found confusing, as I’d expect it had it’s own unique bar code, and it had come from another part of the country. Sunday afternoon I opened the front door, and there was the package on my doorstep. All’s well that ends well! Seems odd, though. We never get mail on Sunday, and a package that small is never left on my doorstep, but in the mailbox.🤔

KAD January 22, 2018 at 2:59 PM

Now that is a mystery. One option is delivered to the wrong address and that person dropped it off but why did they not knock on your door to explain. Option number two is the postage delivery person found it in the truck and dropped it off.
Anyone else have ideas?

Kentucky Derby January 22, 2018 at 4:07 PM

For some reason, packages from Amazon and HSN will say “delivered/at mailbox” before we get them. Amazon explained “why” this happens, but I don’t remember what they said. Every package that says “delivered” has eventually arrived.

I’m a bottom line person. As long as I get the package eventually. I stay on top of tracking numbers, but it’s less aggravating just to get the package when it shows up.

If our neighbors get our packages – they re-deliver. Our neighbors re-deliver catalogs and junk mail. Nice to have neighbors we like and trust.

Silva January 22, 2018 at 5:32 PM

KAD, after they arrived I’d forgotten about the possibility of a nice, but shy neighbor dropping it off. I was so surprised to see it.

Kentucky Derby, I’ve also noticed that with Amazon. Great neighbors are a real blessing!

Original G January 22, 2018 at 10:20 PM

Have gotten packages delivered on a Sunday. Am surprised you got anyone to answer at USPS. Yours probably hot stuffed in wrong mail box.

Had small package with electronics components make it all the way from New Mexico to Richmond, CA. then vanish for three and a half weeks before it finally showed up at Clayton post office and was delivered.

In December we delivered a package way to other end of the street when a delivery service person read last two house numbers wrong.

Silva January 23, 2018 at 10:03 AM

Haha! I guess stranger things have happened, Original G.

The city of Fort Worth is paying homeless people to pick up trash as part of a unique program to clean up the city and turn lives around.

KAD January 22, 2018 at 2:53 PM

KAD January 22, 2018 at 3:11 PM

Question for you? What apps do you find most useful on your phone? I just got a smartphone which is why I am asking. What is really good to have that works well. Thank you.

Jojo Potato January 22, 2018 at 4:54 PM

Every app available is designed to collect whatever data is available on your phone. This includes your contacts, notes, favorites etc, and dynamic things like your browsing history. Remember, on the web you are the product. Last I look ranks number one on collecting web tracking data and worst as an app is weathher bug. But heh, have fun!

Silva January 22, 2018 at 5:41 PM

I use the Google browser, and “memo” to make notes to myself. they both came with the phone. I added Amazon Music. I have a bluetooth speaker that the phone will connect with and play music from my playlist, or I can carry the phone in my pocket and listen with earbuds.. That about does it for me!

Happy One January 24, 2018 at 11:29 PM

Google Maps is a good one to have. You can get driving directions and maps. A lot of people use their phone for directions instead of having a separate GPS device such as a Garmin.

I like having a weather app on the phone so I can check the radar or the hour by hour forecast. Yahoo has a weather app. So does the Weather Channel.

I like to listen to podcasts on my phone. The iPhone comes with a podcast app already installed. I’m not sure if other phones do as well or if you have to download an app.

I installed the app for my bank. It lets me deposit a check using my phone, which saves me a trip to the ATM or bank.

If you fly, you’ll want the apps for the airlines you use. You can get your boarding pass sent to your phone and get updates about the status of your flights.

If you like to listen to books, you can download the Audible app.

KAD January 26, 2018 at 5:14 PM

Spectrum credit union, near PH BART requires only $25 balance for free checking, savings, online and ATM. Lots of free ATMs around too. Good loan rates, nice people.

Staples on Clayton Rd at Treat Blvd was robbed by a hispanic male and female in their twenties. They were attempting to steal 2 laptops when employees tried to stop them. One employee was injured with a head injury and was transported to the hospital.

Jojo Potato January 25, 2018 at 7:20 AM

Lime bikes have arrived at PH BART. Noticed yesterday a couple rows of brightly colored green and yellow bikes parked near the police trailer at the west end of the station. They have locks on their rear wheels. This is some kind of bike rental thing where the bikes are unlocked remotely and then ridden and left wherever. Don’t know how much it costs. Their website only mentions penalties, to find the cost you need to download their app. Uh, no thanks. Watch for these bikes in a creek near you.

As a reminder tonight is Burns Night all around the world. A time to dig out the kilt and enjoy some fine scotch whisky with Haggis if you got any while listening to a really good piper. Celebrate a real scoundrel and a fine poet, Robert Burns. I’m not Scottish but have enjoyed this celebration in several places around the world with great enjoyment. After all, anyone can dance like a scott after a few slugs of the real stuff.
