Join the National Park Service for a free winter solstice-themed campfire program on Thursday, Dec.21, 2017 at John Muir National Historic Site (NHS) in Martinez.

The program begins at 3 p.m. with crafts and games in the park and continues with a campfire from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.  Rangers will lead the group in songs, stories and activities to celebrate the changing of the seasons and the legacy of John Muir, one of the greatest naturalists and conservationist the United States has known.

No reservations are required. Meet at the front gate of John Muir NHS, 4202 Alhambra Avenue, in Martinez, California (at the Alhambra Ave. exit off Highway 4). Bring the whole family! There will be something for everyone. Come with picnic blankets, lawn chairs, marshmallows and a desire to have a good time. Rangers will direct you from the gate to the fire ring.

If it rains, or if it is a “Spare the Air Day” the program will be canceled.

We’re having our own celebration. Starting at 12 AM Thursday morning we’re going to feast on venison, rabbit, and ham, drink flagons of mead and around 8:30 AM, when the sun has reached it’s farthest point south we will sacrifice several maidens. RSVP here.

Count me in. I’ll bring a reindeer bladder of fermented elderberries and some all-seeing mushrooms.

I volunteer, if you’re still in need of sacrificial maidens. Sounds like a good time.

Sounds like a delicious meal, I will bring a flagon of mead.

The last sentence is priceless. The burning of the yule log, one the oldest sacred traditions of the peoples of northern Eurasia, cancelled by the BAAQMD.

They actually had to cancel this last year because it was a Spare the Air day.

I imagine the Druids were very disappointed when the Celtic Air Resources Board cancelled their Winter Solstice bonfires at Stonehenge.

I like the events they have there. But it is sadly hilarious that our Christianity-saturated but Christianity-allergic culture basically has to find its way back to paganism to have communal events be possible at all. Everybody wants Christmas parties but without the Christmas. Kinda pathetic when you think about it.
