I can’t believe it. The others did the right thing finally by Edi. They took too long in appointing him Vice Mayor. They also did the right thing for Carlyn without taking too long.

KAD – I was in complete shock when a friend e-mailed me the news. Who knew that Hoffmeister, McGallian & Leone were capable of doing the right thing.

About time congratulations Edi.

Now Edi will force through his utopian vision of rent control. I guess as a landlord I should just sell and move out of town. It’s sad it’s come to this I’ve been a landlord in Concord for 40 years.

Thank you slum lord…please move thank you for 40 years of nothing added

AnonZ December 6, 2017 at 5:29 AM

Concord Landlord: It’s really sad it’s come to this…. I was raised in Concord my entire 51 years as were all my children. They have all had to leave the area, or the state just to be able to buy a house and live a simple life because housing prices/rent here are outrageously ridiculous!

Town December 6, 2017 at 9:54 AM

Go look how rent control worked for Oakland. Owner sells property and then a developer buys it, tears it down and builds luxury condos. Now you have a homeless problem.

Roz December 5, 2017 at 8:49 PM

Glad Carlyn Obringer is part of the team.

Congrats to both! They will do great by the City of Cobcord. I believe and trust in their ability! Edi is not a sale out and good luck to any consultants and developers who try to approach him with ill intent.

Revisionist history. Birsan fought hard to keep one of the most corrupt developers in the country, Lennar, as the single “bidder” on the CNWS, accepting without a fight a term sheet with over $35M less in funds for repairs to nearby streets. He took the biggest dive on the vote. Let’s hope for and demand better than that.

Joe December 5, 2017 at 9:44 PM

Yea Edi!!!!! Congratulations to both Edi and Carolyn. Both are great for this city. Really seem to care about crime isuues, homeless issues etc. make us proud.

Oh God help us….Get ready for the Edi standard, “raise taxes and spend in his neighborhood” to buy them votes…After all, he has been known to state that the City of Oakland is his model for the City of Concord… All one has to do is read his analysis of his loaded survey’s…

It is amazing how CA people think they are so “progressive” and have yet to figure out how to legally sell marijuana. The tax revenue you fools are losing is incredible. Even a small state like NV has it figured out and the bucks are rolling in.

Most sincere congratulations to Mayor Birsan and Vice Mayor Obringer. They will indeed serve in a challenging time for our city. Because I am a resident who wishes the entire former CNWS would be guarded as Open Space, often I will disagree with their decisions. But I do like and respect them both as being people who truly love Concord and who will at least LISTEN TO and SERIOUSLY CONSIDER feedback from all residents.

If the City is forced to have districts, then Hope Johnson should get voted in for the Sun Terrace district. The only problem is that we will not be able to vote for her.

Reply

Well Folks December 6, 2017 at 8:32 AM

Districts do not need to be complicated. Carson City has 4…north, south, east & west. Concord could do the same.

Elvis December 6, 2017 at 5:05 AM

Concord needs an elected Mayor, not this childish musical-chairs mayor excuse for city government. You would not have seen the bizarre passage of the CNWS plans had the decision been made any orher way. Concord’s City Council decision makng has become governance by fiat.

Town December 6, 2017 at 10:04 AM

Why is the Mayor not elected?

Elvis December 6, 2017 at 11:23 PM

I don’t know. Concord and Clayton used to have elected Mayors. Then, very quietly, they changed to this City Council business. I don’t even know when it happened. I certainly don’t remember voting on it.

So what, it was his turn December 6, 2017 at 6:45 AM

For a mayor in name only position. What really bothers me is Birsan’s self serving Facebook post. He gives himself a “at a boy” pat on the back with nothing about his role as public servant. Compare that post to Obringer’s post. She graciously acknowledges her fellow council members and restates her desire to serve the community. I’ll be remembering this when the next election comes about. Yes, character does matter.

Congrats Edi, there’s lots to do!!
We’ll soon see if he’s now on the “dole” from the cities special interest groups, there’s some things that need attention but haven’t been addressed.

#1 Underfunded retirement programs for the highest wage earning folks in the city, this will eat us alive…….how will it end?? whats the fix?? HOT POTATO!! UGLY UGLY UGLY….

#2 Will we regain control of the Naval Weapons project from the tacky development ideas brought forward?
Demand excellence or end up being the home to the low low low income housing for the Bay Area ( that’s what ABAG wants )

#3 Will we wait to get sued before going to a dsitrict based council election?? wake up folks and organize yourselves before the change.

#4 Body cams for our P.D. do we have them… if not why??? protect our city from false claims. Body Cams have become standard issue, it looks really bad to NOT have them. We do have GOOD cops, let’s bring them up to speed.

The list goes on and on………….

Well Folks December 6, 2017 at 8:37 AM

There will be no “suits” over district elections. This law firm is trying the same crap in Martinez and the citizens there see thru it.

Should there be districts? YES!!!!!!! Concord is too large to handle elections and city business like Mayberry. Concord needs to freakin grow up governance wise, It is too big to act so small minded

ManBearPig December 6, 2017 at 12:36 PM

Cameras.

They’re not that easy. Cost of the cameras, plus digital storage of all those gigs of footage (not cheap), how long to store the footage (not cheap), plus policies on use, not to mention what can be legallly required to be provided if a Request for Information is filled out? All footage? Block of footage from a particular call? The city is watching what other cities do right or wrong before acting.

Another Anon December 6, 2017 at 7:50 AM

@ Concord Landlord
Yes…. please sell and leave Concord. As if that is a punishment to the rest of us.
@TIFOKCIS
“Scumbag renters”? Do you understand that renters and landlords are two parties in a business transaction? Both parties are both trying to get the best deal in the transaction. But somehow only one of those two parties trying to work out a better deal is the scumbag in your mind? Please join Concord Landlord and get out.

This will change nothing. As mayor or vice mayor, they don’t have total control over decisions. All decisions are voted on by the council so being the mayor or vice mayor carries no extra clout. The majority rules, so nothing will change. They are just rotated into these positions every two years.

Great! Edi! Amateur at best. I hope he doesn’t get his news from Claycord, raise a stink then do absolutely nothing about it until it’s state assembly election time and vanish like that other guy.

I did the Pulse survey. At best, a C for trying but a high school project at best.
But I may be wrong and he will fix things. Let’s see, 100 day agenda:
1. Reduce crime
2. Address homelessness
3. Fix roads
4. Don’t fix the white fence

I think Edi can be a good mayor, but Laura is a hard act to follow. She did a great job of managing the council meetings effectively and in a professional and considerate way.

The mayor of Concord has a special duty to be the mayor for ALL the people in Concord, including those he disagrees with. I think Edi can do this, but it will be a different role for him.

Congratulations also to Carlyn! I can’t say enough good things about her.

These two people are smart and political. They know how to think on their feet. Both have higher aspirations, I’m sure. Both are too far left for my taste and too eager to dump all over the neighborhood to squeeze in as many dwelling units as possible. But over the years I’ve seen some pretty underwhelming, underinformed, underprepared, and underaccessible council people and these two are none of that. Some people seek office because they need the paltry paycheck and the health insurance. Not an issue here. And unlike some, they return their calls, don’t smoke and drink to excess and they don’t work for the government.. They won’t embarrass us out in public. I just hope Edi doesn’t let the power go to his head and start grabbing women in all the wrong places.
