LOL #9

No book report again, still wading through. Why can’t I just put them down and let them go? Why do I have to go through to the end?

Silva December 1, 2017 at 9:42 PM

We had a Beagle once. The only way we could ever keep her home was when she grew old and became completely deaf and blind. She tunnelled under the fence. We’d always be on the lookout for large rocks to place in the tunnels, and the next time she’d tunnel in a different place. We’d let her out, two minutes later whe’d be gone. We’d get regular calls from Silverwood School from the secretary saying “Margot’s here!”, and my mom would go get her. She’d head directly there to beg children for their lunches.

What a wonderful list, Atticus Thraxx. I am so impressed with the Singapore building. That looks much more livable than any other massive complexes I’ve ever seen before. Really cool.

Has anyone donated a vehicle? Who to? Is it worth the tax break? How was the process?

Chris Watchman December 2, 2017 at 1:32 AM

Never posted before so sorry if I’m doing this wrong but approximately 9 minutes ago at 1:22am, December 2, I heard what sounded like an actual explosion off in the distance. Anyone closer have any idea what it was?

Rubyvee December 2, 2017 at 8:24 AM

Can anyone explain why, or how, Hidden Valley Lakes came to be? I know nothing about geology. I’m not even sure what questions to ask. Simply put why is there water there, where does the water come from?

Ancient Mariner December 2, 2017 at 9:44 AM

@ Fyi No. 13:
Donating a car used to be worth it, but they changed the rules.
You used to be able to deduct what the car was worth.
Now you can deduct only what it sells for at auction.
S, if you donate a car that you believe is worth $1000 and it is auctioned for $20, you can deduct only $20.
Sell your car instead.

K December 2, 2017 at 10:00 AM

Did anyone else hear the sound of an explosion near Port Chicago by the Burger King and Taco Bell ?

Officer Barbrady December 2, 2017 at 10:15 AM

While motoring about in Concord I started looking at the city landscaping. It is well maintained and I appreciate that. A shoutout to the folks that do the work.

Kirkwood December 2, 2017 at 10:40 AM

Rubyvee – If memory serves, back in the early 60’s there was a gravel quarry at, or near that location. The lakes are probably natural and fed by a spring. The situation is similar to Ellis Lake park in Concord.

Ex-Coastie December 2, 2017 at 11:38 AM

FYI #13 car donation
If you are donating the car purely for tax purposes then it is not worth it. No charitable donation is worth it just for tax purposes. I donated a low end car to the Food Bank of Contra Costa. I did it because I think the Food Bank is a worthwhile charity and because the car was low end and I didn’t want to deal with the low end people that would want to buy it. There was a fair charitable donation tax write off. It was easy, I called a phone number, they came and picked up the car and then handed me the paperwork once the car had been sold at auction.

Aspirin December 2, 2017 at 12:09 PM

Cowell Road, from Treat to Monument is a joy to drive. The fun begins while dodging the rough patches, cracks, depressed utility covers and multiple patching of road work.

It is a test of a vehicle’s suspension and a driver’s ability to quickly steer around bumps.

Bummed December 2, 2017 at 12:15 PM

Concord clean up day needs improvement. Was just at two of the drop off points that were closed early. The men there suggested going to the Concord Pavilllion but there was such a long line there that it would have been over before we got to the drop off spot. What a waste of time.

Mr. P. Hill December 2, 2017 at 1:00 PM

bay bridge crash killed a toll booth worker this morning … crazy!

Elvis December 2, 2017 at 3:24 PM

On a recent motoring adventure through Concord, I saw a homeless person with their shopping cart load of stuff sprawled out asleep at 10:00 am in the morning in “The Crown Jewel of Concord.” Concord offers its homeless the very best accomodations available. I’m impressed!

Ancient Mariner December 2, 2017 at 5:49 PM

@ Rubyvee No. 25:
Get onto Google Earth, zoom in on Hidden Lakes and use the Wayback feature to see what it looked like in 1939. You will see that there were always trees along the bottom of the fairly flat valley, indicating that water naturally flows there, probably under the ground most of the year. Water will always flow along a valley until some farmer decides to build a stock-pond to water his cattle (look up Sindicich Lagoons – not sure if that’s the right spelling). At some point the valley was dammed and the Hidden Lakes were formed.

Lazy youngsters December 2, 2017 at 7:31 PM

Why the heck are the newbies in our neighborhood allowed to park the opposite direction on their street – looks like we have a generation of self absorbed MElinnieals – or people who don’t understand that their selfish habits lead to people who think that their habits is a signal that we don’t respect the laws of our City.

Cowellian December 2, 2017 at 8:12 PM

@Lazy Youngsters,
When my son was in college, he worked as an intern for the Sheriff’s department, working primarily in parking enforcement. Parking on the wrong side of a two-way street can get a ticket for being too far from the curb (18″ on the passenger side).

Of course, if you call the police, and they actually send someone, the cop will make his trip more worthwhile by ticketing every infraction on the street.

Dr. Jellyfinger December 2, 2017 at 8:32 PM

Well…. I’m leaving Mudpuddle & heading home tomorrow.
Sold out my share of the lima bean farm to my relatives for a pittance and it’s just as well.
I’ll bet they start murdering each other till there’s only one left with Grandpa Jellyfinger’s estate.
I’d have hung in there but the local paper couldn’t help but mention that “The boy who was the infamous motorboating victim out on Old Orchard Rd back in 1969 is back in town”….. Geez! You’d think they would have forgotten it by now, but apparently nothing newsworthy has happened here since then.

Rubyvee December 2, 2017 at 8:56 PM

Thanks Ancient Mariner and Kirkwood.

Kentucky Derby December 2, 2017 at 9:08 PM

Dr. Jelly … You know darn well that you’re not in Mudpuddle, Mississippi for the reading of the will. You’ve been making up this bizarre BS for years. Please leave the motorboating to Vince Vaugh, okay?

Best of luck and success in your search for a wife…

No Excuses December 2, 2017 at 10:04 PM

Asperin, You do realize that the Concord Elite whose homes dominate the hill overlooking their city and backing up to their own wild ridge do not want Cowell road fixed. Why would they encourage more traffic? FYI: Helix, Tedeschi, Wentling, Garaventa(s) x 2 or 3, Martin, the list is long, the cream is sweet.

Dr. Jellyfinger December 2, 2017 at 10:30 PM

I have the right to be believed!

KAD December 2, 2017 at 10:55 PM

And Helix got that wild ridge behind his house designated open space.

Anon December 3, 2017 at 9:59 AM

Clean up day was a mismanaged disaster. I’ve seen high school car washes that were better organized.

Anon December 3, 2017 at 11:38 AM

When I was a kid, Concord PD would patrol quiet neighborhoods at night and issue tickets for street parking in the wrong direction and other parking violations. I can’t imagine that calling the police about a neighbor’s lazy parking habits will get you anywhere these days. Concord patrol cops are too arrogant for that kind of thing. Maybe if the violation was in the middle of a weekday and you are willing to wait 2 hours, a meter man might show up. But really, most street cars are gone during the day and violations are at night. I live near an apartment building where every night a low life parks his car on the lawn, but code enforcement doesn’t work at night, so we are out of luck.

Elvis December 3, 2017 at 1:03 PM

Dr. Jellyfinger

I can’t find it on a map. What is the nearest town to Mudpuddle?

WC resident December 3, 2017 at 1:14 PM

I’m not sure when Anon #42 was a kid but in the 1980s and possibly 1990s Concord PD would regularly issue citations for VC 22502 which is the one that covers parking more than 18 inches from the curb. The one that surprised me was a friend who parked on the canal/ditch side of Denkinger got a 22502 ticket. There’s no curb on that side.

Dr. Jellyfinger December 3, 2017 at 1:30 PM

It isn’t a town actually … it’s just a place…. and the family farm is about 5 miles southwest of that. You can only get there by 4wd truck & boat…. or helicopter.

What’s that weird comment about looking for a wife?
I’ve already got a couple & don’t have time for another… unless one of their husbands finds out that is.

Elvis December 3, 2017 at 4:32 PM

Dr. Jellyfinger

Oh, that Mudpuddle. I was thinking it might be the one near Hiccup.

Keep all three barrels up December 4, 2017 at 12:21 PM

It’s very windy today, and I’ve noticed Lots and lots of seeds flying around. Does anyone know what kind they are?

Antler December 6, 2017 at 12:51 AM

They were here in the general area of Bailey Road/Concord Blvd. intersection, and up close they looked like miniature dandelion seeds (except the spikes were smaller and irregular in length)….. but it’s the wrong time of year for dandelions to be “doing their thing”! There was another cloud of them near the Concord Avenue Trader Joe’s, but none of the other parts of town where I was running errands had such “busy clouds”.
Where did you see them?

Oh yeah December 4, 2017 at 12:45 PM

#47…We’ve been wondering that too! All the kids at school are asking, and we don’t have an answer. We are in the Concord High School area.

Elvis December 4, 2017 at 7:59 PM

@Keep all three barrels up

I noticed them too this morning and, because they are so prolific, I’m pretty sure it is some kind of weed but we won’t know which one until next Spring.

Silva December 4, 2017 at 11:05 PM

Free the frogs December 5, 2017 at 1:30 PM

I wonder where all the frogs have gone! When I first bought my house 22years ago we would have tons of frogs in the yard! Strange!

KAD December 6, 2017 at 12:43 AM

The frogs were so loud at our house, I could hear them through the double pane windows.

Stop look and listen December 5, 2017 at 3:23 PM

Anyone know why helicopter was circling oak grove area?

Mika December 5, 2017 at 6:16 PM

@Free the frogs–we used to have frogs and garter snakes, too, when we moved here early 1970’s. All gone now 🙁

KAD December 6, 2017 at 12:44 AM

Is someone using poisons in your yard? None allowed here.

Free the frogs December 6, 2017 at 9:18 AM

I sometimes think it has something to do with our city water. My parents water their yard with well water and have some frogs around the yard. Absolutely no poison in my yard. I remember seeing snakes too.

WC resident December 6, 2017 at 8:32 AM

My original test message that I’d replied to was not approved but the two test replies were and so the messages above look odd as they appear to be replies to nothing.

I don’t think I like the new system as it means new comments are buried in the middle.

Silva December 6, 2017 at 9:38 AM

Ah, I see. Yes, it does mean if we are to see replies to earlier posts we must look through the whole thread again. I may miss the numbered posts, also.

KAD December 5, 2017 at 10:12 PM

Wow – Did I miss the news about the new Reply button. I love it but we lost the number associated with the post. I guess that is not possible. Thanks Claycord.

Why, yes it is!

KAD December 6, 2017 at 12:41 AM

I have decided I love the new reply feature.

Antler December 6, 2017 at 12:56 AM

I do in one respect, but now we have to start up at the erstwhile comment #1 and read the last reply on every comment …. just to find out the most recent comments. So I wish we could have BOTH features…. sorta like wanting toasted pecans AND homemade hot fudge sauce on my scoop of vanilla ice cream! 😍

Chicken Little December 6, 2017 at 3:55 AM

So do I. But I remember that when it was introduced a few years ago, most people hated it and it was switched back. Hopefully things will work out differently this time.

Yes, Chicken Little, that did become a confusing mess. This will be interesting.

I heard on the police scanner that there are protesters at Whole Foods on Diamond.

What are they protesting?

Kentucky Derby December 6, 2017 at 9:08 AM

I remember “reply” from a few years ago, and some people complained. It didn’t last long. A lot of blogs have reply features.

I think when people are objecting to something new, what they’re really objecting to is CHANGE.

I’ve always liked change myself – you’ll never get anywhere in life if you don’t embrace change!

Kirkwood December 6, 2017 at 11:37 AM

Although I commended the change while in another (Pavilion) topic, I now see that if I scroll immediately to the bottom of the thread like I usually do, I might miss recent posts nestled within posts from several days ago, such as “Politics” which often has 100+ posts.

Guess one can’t have everything.

Elvis December 6, 2017 at 1:54 PM

Clayton and/or Concord must have been testing the Emergency Alert system this morning. Heard the sirens when I went outside to water some plants. I had not heard them at all in years and years. Could be testing them because of threats from North Korea. There is no much ambient noise anymore, that I couldn’t hear them inside, however, especially with the furnace running. Funny how that change thing works. It used to be so quiet around here you could hear those sirens inside the house.

Silva December 6, 2017 at 7:30 PM

Not sure what could’ve been wrong with my attempt to reply to a comment regarding frogs, but I’ll try again and see what happens. I miss the frog songs and the snakes too. I got to thinking about it and wondered if it could have had anything to do with the switchover at the water treatment plants from chlorine to chloramine a few years ago. I remember when that happened we were instructed to let tap water sit for 48 hours before adding it into ponds and aquariums, so as not to kill the fish.

anon December 7, 2017 at 1:55 PM

Those weed seeds that were flying around were dandelion seeds.

Shasta Daisy December 7, 2017 at 2:40 PM

I’m not 100% sure but my guess is coyote bush seeds. The hills are filled with them now. They have 1,000s of tiny flowers that have gone to seed. I have not seen any dandelions that have gone to seed at this time.

Silva December 7, 2017 at 3:06 PM

Though they had a sort of a Dandelion seed structure, as Shasta said, no Dandelions now, there were also way too many of them. I’ve never seen that phenomenon before. It will be interesting to see what sprouts everywhere! Now to google “coyote bush”.

Silva December 7, 2017 at 3:07 PM

Oh I LIKE them!

Kentucky Derby December 7, 2017 at 3:31 PM

I thought they were dandelion seeds too. It’s not spring, but dandelions can grow anytime, anywhere. If you don’t cut your lawn, they’re in parks, etc. I can’t speak for others, but I’ve never seen it like (recently) because it’s usually not that windy.

Shasta Daisy December 7, 2017 at 3:37 PM

Google coyote bush or go for a hike around Mt D and you will see what I mean….they’re everywhere!!!

Way too many flying around to be dandelion seeds but they do resemble each other.

Elvis December 8, 2017 at 6:36 PM

They look like Dandelion seeds only smaller. Ordinary, household Vinegar and water in a spray bottle makes a useful, organic Dandelion weed control.
