The Water Cooler – Do You Talk About Politics with Your Family During Thanksgiving Dinner?

November 23, 2017 12:00 pm · 31 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.

Today’s question:

Do you plan to talk about politics with your family during dinner tonight, or do you stay away from the subject?

Talk about it….

No, no politics, the Thanksgiving dinner should not turn into the World Wrestling Federation.

94521 November 23, 2017 at 12:11 PM

Nope.

Badge1104 November 23, 2017 at 12:13 PM

No. We forbid it!
The liberal-left side of the family always gets unhinged. So no, it’s not allowed.

Dawg November 23, 2017 at 12:20 PM

No, why would I want to spoil a nice family dinner? I have my opinions and everyone else has theirs.

Mixed Vegetables November 23, 2017 at 1:20 PM

Of course! It’s a big part of what’s going on right now. Luckily none of my family are extremists, so we’re able to share opinions and hear out others. Definitely talk smack about them on the ride home though.

Captain Bebops November 23, 2017 at 1:20 PM

Not during dinner but before hand usually laughing about the state of things. We all think pretty much alike and discuss taking over the world. 😀

Bringit November 23, 2017 at 1:38 PM

Yea we do, we are all Trump supporters so we are laughing about the liberals all day long.

Loretta November 23, 2017 at 1:53 PM

The point of Thanksgiving is to celebrate those things we’re thankful for. Politicians and especially the current administration are certainly nowhere on that list, so no.

Joatmeal November 23, 2017 at 1:57 PM

We will this year. Won’t be able to avoid it.

MeCrazyWoman November 23, 2017 at 2:32 PM

No

Person November 23, 2017 at 3:35 PM

Yep! A family of Trump supporters, so you bet we talk!!

Russ Sayin November 23, 2017 at 3:38 PM

@Mixed Vegetables:
best post ever

Chicken Little November 23, 2017 at 3:41 PM

My family has banned any discussion of politics from the Thanksgiving dinner table. It’s the only way to keep the liberals in the family from losing their you-know-what.

jjshawk November 23, 2017 at 3:42 PM

Yes, although, I wouldn’t be the one to bring up politics, but if politics are brought up, I am all in! I don’t believe in forbidding subjects of conversation, but try to be sensitive to those who are sensitive. If someone loses their $__t, I think, they are out of line and being immature, can’t please everyone. Most of us can debate our positions, and we either agree, or agree to disagree,….no love lost. Conversation is far more interesting and enjoyable with those whom I disagree, as opposed to those whom are in agreement,…..preaching to the choir is dull and boring!

Rollo Tomasi November 23, 2017 at 4:02 PM

Only after heavy drinking.

CSS November 23, 2017 at 4:22 PM

Never, there’s nothing good to say about CA politicians.

KingOfC November 23, 2017 at 4:30 PM

Are you kidding me? Half of these Claycordians are watching a speech from Trump during dinner! Make America Great Again!!!

TIFOKCIS November 23, 2017 at 4:58 PM

The Liberals start it.

Silva November 23, 2017 at 5:25 PM

No.

Jerk November 23, 2017 at 5:43 PM

LOL, I was at a family event just prior to the 2016 Presidential election and everyone at the event assumed that everyone was all like minded (they are all brain washed by the media), when I spoke up and was laughed out of the room…….then the Election happened and all of the crybabies didn’t dare go there when I saw them all (I had a HUGE Grin btw) at Thanksgiving.

anon November 23, 2017 at 6:05 PM

Been there done that. Not a good idea. Especially when the extremists get hysterical when things don’t go their way. One even pointed her knife threateningly when she was told she was closed minded. 300 lbs of drunken hysteria. Whoa! Don’t go there!

Taking a break from the drama this thanksgiving.

You Can’t Fix Stupid November 23, 2017 at 9:28 PM

Yep! We’re all right-leaning so we get along fine. Spent the evening discussing the plight of being Christians, tax payers and gun owners in CA while the state goes to hell around us. Good times. We also lit a wood burning fire.

Dr. Jellyfinger November 23, 2017 at 9:40 PM

No… we don’t argue politics with close family & friends… ever.
It just isn’t worth getting the Liberal ones so violently angry & hysterical.

Not crazy November 23, 2017 at 10:34 PM

Not in the Trump era.

TIFOKCIS November 24, 2017 at 6:56 AM

Liberals couldn’t help themselves.

Outnumbered 8:2 we shut them all down every time.

All that was left was name calling or beating my wife and I up. Neither of those happened as bad as they wish they could.

Retired Atty November 24, 2017 at 6:59 AM

We had a nice political conversation over dinner last night. We all liked about 90% of Trump’s ideas, but also agreed that 90% of the time, he acts like a spoiled narcissist adolescent. I would bet there are a lot of families like mine out there. He is embarrassing, but we are still glad Hillary is not our president.

Paladin November 24, 2017 at 8:46 AM

Of course we do. We are a family of conservatives so much of our conversation was about wishing that the traitors and Democrats would get out of the way while our President MAGA! Trump 2020!

Kentucky Derby November 24, 2017 at 10:03 AM

We don’t talk about politics any day of the year. Why would we spoil a good time with family and friends on Thanksgiving – talking about something so divisive?

Family and friends should have more important things to talk about. Wow.

Jojo Potato November 24, 2017 at 10:53 AM

Only interesting discussion arose when our immigrant friend pointed out how the U.S. has a bad habit of abandoning allies. Like bailing out of Afganistan when the Russians were defeated leaving behind a big mess. Sort of like Vietnam, help out for a while and then leave a big mess. Then we all agreed he was right and continued to enjoy our dinner as we mused about the future in Niger and Libya etc.

anon November 24, 2017 at 11:02 AM

Had an incident on Labor Day, so had to stay away. Several incidents, actually. The media has them all whipped, up. Even Mr. Smartpants rent on a rant. One of the sweet children is emotional now because of the adult behavior. Despicable.

ON DA November 24, 2017 at 1:15 PM

The rest of the year should be the same. No politics
