I just read “What Happened”
Boy! what a blamefest!
I especially liked the very last page that simply said “And the sun was in my eyes”.

What’s up with all the police cars at Buskirk and Hookston in Pleasant Hill? Apparently something suspect in a shopping cart across from DSW.

City workers need to put down their coffee and get off their over paid butts and clean up the grounds around the Concord Senior Center! The city workers seem to belong to the mow and blow club. The rest of the grounds are a MESS! Weeds and over grown ivy is a mess. Do your jobs and earn your wage! The place is an eye sore!

New one on me. Homeless freak staggering around waving his arms in the middle of the canal trail this morning. Apparently begging, couldn’t really understand his growlings. How much is WC giving these people? Maybe later he will pass out next to the guy under the tree on the IHT. What a great town!

Silva September 16, 2017 at 12:33 PM

Thank you Señor Thraxx!!! I know it’s probably all work, 😉 but have a good trip. You (all) may have seen this one, but it’s my all time favorite smile from a canine person;

Does anyone know who got robbed last night? CPD and a helicopter searched the trail by Franquet/242 area. One person was caught using the FLIR on the helicopter. September 17, 2017 at 12:02 PM

@anon – A person stole some clothes from Sears and on the way out, he threatened an employee with a knife. He ran away and police searched the area with the helicopter.

We saw/heard/enjoyed the heck out of some beautiful music last evening with fabulous dear friends at Freight & Salvage, an awesome venue. Not a bad seat in the house (unlike their former location). Blame Sally rocked it out!!!.
Life is good.

Correction to post @28 – “Don’t know what that means.” – an edit feature would really be nice. Just sayin’.

IHT … Iron Horse Trail. The trail that runs along the old railroad tracks through, at least, Walnut Creek, parts of Pleasant Hill … etc.

7.1 earthquake in Mexico today, 75 miles south of Mexico City. Surprisingly MSM is reporting it. Damage assessment and casualty reports not yet available.

Mary Fouts September 19, 2017 at 1:06 PM

Toys R Us filed for Chap 11 bankruptcy protection today. The company is using very careful language, stating today that they “expect” to continue honoring warranties, return policies, and gift cards.

Wonder if this will have any impact on their new store scheduled for Concord’s Veranda shopping center, or their current PH store?

Silva September 19, 2017 at 1:28 PM

Muddhen, just curious, why would you be surprised MSM reports earthquakes in Mexico? I mean, they always have before.

Last week I asked if anyone had any experience with the ARF mobile spay/neuter clinic. I brought my five month old kitten to the one in Pleasant Hill last Wednesday. The people that worked there were nice, informative and answered any questions that people had. They had their system fine tuned and everything seemed to run smoothly. My kitten is healing ok so far, except he needed a cone of shame. The only thing was they are first come first serve and can only do so many sprays/neuters. I got there a little after 8 am because they said they would be there and start taking patients around 8:30. There was already a line and they only took three more after me and turned another person away.

Concord Safeway plagued with problems

POSTED: SEP 19 2017 08:10AM PDT
CONCORD, Calif. (Rob Malcom/KTVU) – The Safeway store at 2600 Willow Pass Road in Concord has been plagued with problems.

Customers say they are greeted panhandlers inside and outside of the store which also has a persistent problem of shoplifting. Customers like Desiree Monsarat from Martinez only stop in when she’s out of choices.

“A lot of times, people do ask for money in front of the store, sometimes inside the store there’s questionable people,” she said. “Just tonight, it seemed a woman was watching. I had my wallet in the cart it seemed like she was watching.”

Concord Mayor Laura Hoffmeister says her office has been inundated with complaints and the problems have been going on for about a year and half at the 29-year-old store.
Hoffmeister said the complaints are largely about loitering. “The loitering that’s going on in there also folks that will steal from the store taking merchandise without paying for it we’ve had homelessness or trespassing issues going on,” she said.

The mayor addressed the complaints in August she sent a letter to Safeway’s parent company, Albertsons, outlining concerns of homelessness, trespassing , and shoplifting.

She would like Safeway to allow Concord police to cite trespassers and shoplifters on the spot and also work with local police on better security measures but has been met with resistance.

Hoffmeister said: “They weren’t interested in pursuing an authorization to arrest they weren’t interested in working with our police department on crime prevention options they feel the corporate standards right now are satisfactory.”

Safeway responded Sept. 15 with a letter that read in part, “We have information about the Concord Police Department’s Authorization to Arrest Trespassers program. The company is not presently entering these programs.”

Store representatives also stated they employ a number of security measures to prevent and deter shoplifting, including visible deterrents and others that aren’t apparent.

Christian Korsgard who works in the deli told KTVU, “We have a problem with shoplifting a problem with violence were trying to cut it all back were having problems like crazy.”

Concord’s mayor says an authorization to arrest or cite shoplifters and trespassers would cut down on some problems but the cities hands are tied because the Willow Pass Road location is a standalone store with the property entirely owned and managed by Safeway.

While the store for now is determined to rely on the corporate security measures in place, absent of help from Concord police they have agreed to make some changes by looking at the cosmetic condition of the building and agreed to upgrade the lighting.”

With talks right now at an impasse city leaders and police will meet again with store officials to find a solution to the problems it’s not clear when that meeting will take place. September 19, 2017 at 4:49 PM

We’ve been talking about problems at that Safeway store for the last decade. The problems have always been mostly ignored.

Silva September 19, 2017 at 6:37 PM

Safeway’s normal MO would be to close the store when it gets like this. They then would not allow any other retailer into the property for five years. It would stand abandoned for the duration.

Giddyup September 19, 2017 at 6:56 PM

San Francisco must be giving their homeless criminals one way BART tickets to Concord with the incentive, “The climate’s better.”

Silva September 19, 2017 at 7:08 PM

Giddyup, SF delivered large numbers of homeless people in Oakland in vans right before Super Bowl.

Giddyup September 19, 2017 at 11:03 PM

Silva, I believe it. I’m sure they do it all the time. Somebody has to be doing that because Concord has not had problems like this, that I can ever remember.

Hope Johnson September 19, 2017 at 11:14 PM

It should be noted that part of the reason Concord is raising this issue now is that the Contra Costa Civil Grand Jury began investigating and then issued a report on the need for cities to address the growing homeless population. The Council had to respond by Sept. 13 and appears to have successfully diverted attention away from its own long term lack of attention to this issue throughout Concord, not just in one store.

Here is a link to the CGJ report:

Antler September 20, 2017 at 4:52 AM

Silva, do you think that is the reason Safeway closed their Monument Bouldvard store?

Silva September 20, 2017 at 7:58 AM

Thank you, Hope Johnson.

Silva September 20, 2017 at 8:02 AM

Antler, I most definitely do. Safeway has a VERY long history of closing their stores as the surrounding neighborhoods become less affluent.

Had enough September 20, 2017 at 8:13 AM

I work between the Bart Station and Todos Santos Plaza. I have a front row seat to the parade of mentally ill transients who stroll into town daily. We are such a magnet here, there are new people every day. I recognize the new ones immediately. Disgusting perverts, aggressive beggars, bold trespassers, illegal campers, garbage spewers, passed out drunks. Many are felons. Thank your government for attracting them here. Thank your police department for coddling and enabling them and assigning them to low priority response times. It is the services provided by the government and the affectionate police chief and that pulls them into the center of town. They are welcome here and they know it.

Silva September 20, 2017 at 8:47 AM

I should have included changing demographics.

Hope Johnson September 20, 2017 at 9:37 AM

@ Silva # 47
Safeway was bought out by Albertson’s a few years ago so it’s a different corporate decision maker. I would not be surprised to learn that stores in lower income areas do get closed more often first, though .

Silva September 20, 2017 at 10:07 AM

Oh yes, I forgot about that.

For a number of years off and on my oldest Grandson and his Mother lived with us. I’m a bit old fashioned about opening doors for females and treating people with respect, but do believe I would, even today, have a few things to say if a letter showed up like this article describes.

“A new fifth grade teacher at Canopy Oaks Elementary is asking students to use gender-neutral pronouns in the classroom.

Math and science teacher Chloe Bressack sent the request home in a letter to parents headlined “About Mx. Bressack.” ”

Jojo Potato September 21, 2017 at 4:12 PM

Let me use this opportunity to say hi to the earthquake boys and girls of the United States Geologic Survey (USGS). Not only are they doing a good job on earthquakes and all that stuff but they actually stop for pedestrians! That speedway of Jones Road in WC does have a crosswalk about half way along the BART tracks. Walking there just now, their white pickup stopped and let me cross. THANKS.

KG September 21, 2017 at 4:15 PM

@HadEnough #48. I heard that the 5150’s go to John Muir in Concord and are then released. If true, that would explain the numbers.

Jojo Potato September 22, 2017 at 6:26 AM

This coincidence has always bothered me. 5150 is the code for mental health hold and the model number of the original IBM pc.

WC resident September 22, 2017 at 2:05 PM

I believe 5150s for all of Contra Costa County are taken to the county hospital at 2500 Alhambra Avenue in Martinez. An alternate location for 5150s is the John Muir Concord’s Behavioral Health Center at 2740 Grant Street which is a bit north of the main hospital campus.

If you walked into the emergency room at a hospital in Richmond, San Ramon, or Brentwood, and said you were suicidal they would have you transported to either Martinez (most likely) or Concord. The same happens if a cop does a 5150 on you anywhere in the county.

At both locations they will ask if you are still suicidal and if you say “no” then they let you go.

Hospitals and jails are the largest “feeder programs” into being homeless. It makes sense you’ll see a bunch of former 5150s plus people released from John Muir Concord’s emergency room drifting through Todos Santos Plaza on the way to BART.

WC resident September 22, 2017 at 2:12 PM

Correction – seems to be the policy and it says to take all of the medically stable 5150s to Martinez. I think the only ones that show up in Concord are unstable. 🙂
