This state has literally turned into a political joke.

4 TPC September 12, 2017 at 7:32 PM

This is how over-regulation by the government gets traction. Dick and Jane are so busy looking down at their cell phones while walking across the street that they need to be protected from becoming roadkill by a state resolution.

Pass the whiskey while I tango to the foxtrot.

5 Dorothy September 12, 2017 at 7:58 PM

How does he plan to make that ban work? Jaywalking is banned. So is riding a bicycle on the sidewalk. So are many other things. Nitwit idiots still do all the banned things.

6 NunYa September 12, 2017 at 7:58 PM

What a stupid idea. Who is going to enforce this law? The police ignore red light runners, and other serious crimes. This problem will fix itself, sadly. When enough people die, it will stop.

7 Bumpyride September 12, 2017 at 8:00 PM

What about people using those white canes are they next cause they seem disgraced walking as well. Cmon California more dumb dumb liberal laws please.

8 Darwin was right September 12, 2017 at 8:21 PM

i believe in the laws of natural selection.

9 Nature Lover September 12, 2017 at 8:28 PM

You can’t fix stupid. I find it very Darwinian that people walk or drive to their death because of their obsession with a cell phone.

10 Original G September 12, 2017 at 8:41 PM

But, But, but, how could we live our lives without Democrats to tell us how to do it ??? Best part comes later when they want money to enforce this law, will do it by tacking it onto your phone bill and will probably go up each year. Have to remember most of their ideas end up taking more dollars out of your pocket.

11 Gwen Larsen September 12, 2017 at 9:13 PM

I can’t believe this. Too many laws. Please please allow us to use a little common sense. There used to be a time when lawmakers only worked a few weeks out of every year. Miss those days.

12 P'Od September 12, 2017 at 9:21 PM

How are you possibly going to police this? If you step out in front of a car without looking, and the driver is driving legally, then it’s on the pedestrian.
There has been an uptick in pedestrian fatalities all over the area with people getting hit crossing freeways, stepping off curbs, getting run over by public transit, and generally not paying attention. It’s on them.
Stupidity kills.

13 Dan September 12, 2017 at 9:29 PM

How about Sacramento minds its own damn business for ice. Somehow we’ve all managed to survive this long without this law. It’s just an excuse to issue citations anyways.

14 Yves harlowe September 12, 2017 at 9:38 PM

Pass another law, yeah, that’s the ticket! That will be as effective as distracted driving laws, bans on texting while driving, bans on having your cell phone in your hand while driving, etc. You can’t stop stupid people from doing stupid things and another law won’t change a thing.

15 ON DA September 12, 2017 at 9:49 PM

People traveling by legs normally travel 1mph or less and watch their step as they travel. Which means looking down and listening from the sides.

16 Jerk September 12, 2017 at 10:15 PM

Good luck with that, Your Officers Do Not Enforce the Cell Phone Driving law – So why would they bother with this???

17 chuckie the troll September 12, 2017 at 10:19 PM

Amen! Those zombies aren’t ‘street safe’ as they say in the developmentally disabled community. The best punishment would be to take their ‘smart phone’ (oxymoron) away and smash it with a sledge hammer. And next time it will be your hand!

18 WC September 12, 2017 at 10:28 PM

Yeah let’s have another law everyone will obey like the no cell phone use while driving one.

If they want to pass laws:

1. Get hit by a car when walking while texting? It’s your problem the car driver bears no responsibility.
2. Hit someone while texting and driving or talking on your cell phone and driving? Your insurance company doesn’t have to pay for the damage you caused. You pay it.

So many on trails with both ears covered are startled when approached.

20 TT September 13, 2017 at 12:20 AM

So are you going to give 14 year olds tickets?

21 Original G September 13, 2017 at 12:49 AM

“So many on trails with both ears covered are startled when approached.”

Keeping that in mind look around next time when out shopping or if you are a passenger in a vehicle at number of young people these days with ear buds in and volume cranked up with all their concentration on the tiny screen in their hand walking along oblivious to what is going on around them.

Then consider how much danger they are in from the two legged predators sometimes on our streets. Please talk to your kids about situational awareness of their surroundings and set an example for them in your own behavior.

22 Cartman September 13, 2017 at 4:13 AM

BOIL THEM !!!

23 Hans Feeley September 13, 2017 at 4:44 AM

This is just another excuse to raise revenue.

Up next: a breathing tax initiative to help fight smog, and promote clean air from unnecessary human carbon dioxide emissions.

24 Just me September 13, 2017 at 4:55 AM

Come on, we don’t even have the people to enforce ” no cellphones while driving” who the hell is going to be watching for this. More important issues to deal with. If you get hit, it’s your fault dummy!

25 S September 13, 2017 at 6:21 AM

What’s next chewing gum while walking?

26 former left. September 13, 2017 at 6:22 AM

California….The Nanny State

29 TIFOKCIS September 13, 2017 at 6:33 AM

I am a Californian hence everyone sees me as I walk, drive, breathe. They wish they were me.

Walking and texting, driving and texting, running red lights, driving 30mph over the posted speed limit is not a problem for me.

………….another CA ‘ban’ is another unenforced law on the books AKA BFD.

30 I B Darwin September 13, 2017 at 6:56 AM

I wonder when the distracted ped gets his just reward from the distracted driver……… That’s what I call ‘cleaning the gene pool’

31 Did I Say That Out Loud September 13, 2017 at 7:00 AM

That’s like asking people to pull their heads out of their ….well, you get it. Let’s leave it alone and the intelligent will survive.

32 TIFOKCIS September 13, 2017 at 7:00 AM

14 year olds don’t walk and text, their mommies drive them everywhere.

Why shouldn’t a 14 year learn the laws also apply to them. This lawless generation created over the last 9 years has to stop.

33 Muddhen September 13, 2017 at 7:01 AM

This kind of law and law maker is what the people voted for. If someone doesn’t like it the people need to change the lawmaker.

Right or wrong, the people elected to lead will do what it takes to remain popular to they can be reelected. That’s what people vote for.

More laws, less enforcement of laws, something’s out of balance.

I guess that’s what the people who vote want.

34 Bumpyride September 13, 2017 at 7:25 AM

You know non CA people laugh at CA and this is why…

35 RANDOM TASK September 13, 2017 at 8:13 AM

Yeah even Oregon is laughing and Hawaii what a joke of a state …..the state produced uneducated no child left behind and created a dem cesspool to bilk millions and produce political careers as well as a huge corruption racket that is out of control …..but yeah the people voting (DEMS) in this state are to blame they cheer for urin and feeces to be thrown at the other party they cheer for destruction of property and businesses ….they cheer for throwing billions of dollars at a pipe dream train …..as well as cheer for state policy to have no one responsible for their own actions ….they cheer for segregation of politics ….they cheer for bums on the streets ….they cheer for more illegals to suck they system ….they cheer for increasing the poor population and defunding schools …..they cheer for more division and increased taxes ….they cheer for imperialism and socialism tactics ….they cheer to be ruled and have all their rights taken away ….they cheer to be irrelevant

36 Just protect my life, liberty and property please. September 13, 2017 at 8:25 AM

Will they revoke your walking permit if you have too many infractions?

But, who will make the distracted people walking fail videos?

37 Mutts September 13, 2017 at 8:33 AM

This idea is a result of a mental disorder! Like all restrictions the left advocates.
May be a way of purging the gene pool, besides, it makes for good video.

38 FCA September 13, 2017 at 9:02 AM

You can’t legislate STUPIDITY. If so, there would be no politicians!!!

39 USA September 13, 2017 at 9:18 AM

This will work as well as the “hands-free” law. All it did was take the phone from the ear and into speaker mode.

Flush the toilet California.

40 WC resident September 13, 2017 at 9:54 AM

Dogs are responsible for far more deaths and injuries than using cell phones in crosswalks. Guns are responsible for far more deaths and injuries than using cell phones in crosswalks. Obesity is responsible for far more deaths and injuries than using cell phones in crosswalks. It’s time to ban dogs, guns, and fat people.

41 Silva September 13, 2017 at 10:02 AM

Pretty funny. Like cops have time for this.

42 chuckie the troll September 13, 2017 at 10:17 AM

Pedestrians and bicyclists should be forced to buy traveling? insurance, I guess. I mean, if they get in an accident and it is their fault, who is going to pay for the damages? It is sad that common sense is a dying art in California, but what do you expect in a state where the criminal is the victim?

43 Shoulda Coulda September 13, 2017 at 10:40 AM

@ Bumpyride

Sight impaired people have to be more aware
of their surroundings in order to survive.
I’d bet they’re paying attention while crossing
the street.

@ Just me

Ask all the people who complain about getting a
ticket for using a cell phone while driving if there
was anyone to enforce the law.

44 idiots everywhere September 13, 2017 at 11:55 AM

How about banning their use on Bart stairways. Those people slow the whole exiting process.

45 Just Me September 13, 2017 at 12:45 PM

How is it that walking across the street minding your own business needs to be banned, but rioting, destroying property and hurting people is encouraged??? We’re on very shaky ground here…

46 AlwaysBePositive September 13, 2017 at 12:48 PM

@#14 rt
I’d be in favor of djt cutting off our funding. We could just keep the money we currently send to the federal government and we’d have an extra penny for every dollar we previously sent them.

47 Mimi (original) September 13, 2017 at 3:08 PM

Banning distracted walking – seems like distracted walking would simply thin the herd of the less intelligent humans.

48 Cautiously Informed September 13, 2017 at 3:45 PM

I’m surprised that the California democrats haven’t thought of placing a tax on walking.

49 King Archie the Invincible September 13, 2017 at 3:49 PM

Came across an idiot today, walking with buds in her ears and face plastered to her phone screen. She was in a cross walk but seemed oblivious to the cars driving past her (illegally, naturally) and those waiting for her to finish her jaunt across a busy road. If they’re crossing legally, then they have the right of way and heaven help the fool who hits them, but if they’re jaywalking or crossing against the light then I say their estate pays to fix the car and any medical costs incurred by the driver.

50 Stupid should hurt September 13, 2017 at 4:43 PM

@Anon #51: Tell your employer CB radios are ILLEGAL under California law. As a trucker, I would know. Thanks to the CHP officer who pulled me over and wrote a citation.

51 Duchess of Martinez September 13, 2017 at 6:45 PM

What the?

With blue tooth ear things how can you tell?

It’s kind of scary when the laws passed are about cell phone use and common sense.

What are cell phones for again?

52 Original G September 13, 2017 at 7:27 PM

“You can’t legislate STUPIDITY.”

But it keeps running for elective state offices and voters keep electing it.

53 What's wrong with you ? September 13, 2017 at 10:00 PM

And who is going to enforce it ? What municipality can afford to hire officers for the phone police.

54 jjshawk September 13, 2017 at 10:22 PM

No matter what, it is impossible to fix stupid via legislation. All you jerk-ass lawmakers want is our money from fines. Note to lawmakers (if you are reading this): Please don’t insult my ability to think and reason, don’t need your B.S. protection from myself! Every time stupid legislation is proposed, I will make note, the author(s), supporters, and etc., and come election time, I know whom to vote against! Hello? Is the message being received? The last election, I voted “No” on all measures with “ban” in the description, and yes, I read them thoroughly!

55 AnonZ September 14, 2017 at 5:33 AM

HELL NO – This is called Natural Selection and we need to leave it alone. It’s the only thing that separates COMMON SENSE from the IGNORANT!!!

NO MORE NANNY LAWS!!!

58 Bumpyride September 14, 2017 at 11:56 AM

I bought a device years ago that drops all cell phone calls withing 30 feet. I use it in resteraunts and in busy sidewalks. It’s funny to watch a whole group of people getting pissed off their calls keep letting dropped. Maybe these devices need to be put at all crosswalks and bust sidewalks and commuter busses and trains.
