Congressman DeSaulnier Issues Statement on President Trump’s Deal with Democrats

September 11, 2017 16:00 pm · 50 comments

Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) issued the following statement on the deal struck between President Trump and Democrats to package nearly $8 billion of hurricane and disaster relief money with a three-month extension of government funding and increase in the debt ceiling, which passed the House on Friday by a vote of 316-to-90.

“The essence of governing, often times requires a willingness to compromise and work with your adversaries. The deal struck this week between Leaders Pelosi and Schumer with President Trump illustrates that the Democratic Party wants to govern for the good of the American people. Unlike the Republican Party, which controls the House, Senate, and the Presidency, Democrats—if given the opportunity—are willing to compromise without neglecting our core values.”

1 Sacto Rob September 11, 2017 at 4:04 PM

Wait–Democrats have core values? Who knew?

2 NoMoreFreeRide September 11, 2017 at 4:09 PM

Explain to me how they want to work with the Republicans by tying hurricane relief funds to raising the debt ceiling?

Well, spending our money is your core value, so I can tell why you’d feel that way.

5 Paul Louis September 11, 2017 at 4:31 PM

Mark D is a dummy party dweeb. Dumocrats are obstructionalists to the core. Any credit goes to our President for working with folks that have not a need for the country since their party lost hundreds of elections last year Mark D. …. please start being a rep to your entire constituents instead of being a party dweeb.

6 Always Right September 11, 2017 at 4:32 PM

Democrats are the values-free, transactional party.

They will do deals with the devil if it gets them votes.

50 years ago they were the party of the KKK.

Today they are the party of BLM, Antifa, and every group with an axe to grind against America.

7 Foonman September 11, 2017 at 4:35 PM

Don’t trust either of those democrats. They are both crooks…..

8 No Excuses September 11, 2017 at 4:43 PM

LMFAO!!!

9 Elwood September 11, 2017 at 4:49 PM

Mark is such a sycophant.

Apparently he has no shame.

I wonder why Claycord posts his inane commentaries as if they were pronouncements from on high.

10 Puffandstuff September 11, 2017 at 4:56 PM

Wow. Nice dig at republicans, Senator. Grow up.

11 Sick of it. September 11, 2017 at 4:56 PM

Adversaries ? Get a clue !!! You were voted in to serve the people not your party. You are the problem why nothing ever gets done

12 Original G September 11, 2017 at 4:58 PM

“Democratic Party wants to govern for the good of the American people.”

Then why are conditions in large cities with large black populations which have been under control of Democrats NOT getting better? Especially in view of first years of the Obama administration when Democrats could have passed any Federal law they wanted because they controlled Congress.

“CNN contributor Van Jones has taken to Facebook with a video in which he warns that Trump is likely to win the election because of his mastery of the new social media landscape of today. This might be true, but his electoral math is more interesting:” …
“In order for the Democrats to win the White House they don’t have to get 50 percent of the black vote or 60, or 70, or 80, or 90, Democrats in order to win historically need 90 to 92 percent of the black vote. If only 70 percent don’t like Donald Trump, that means 30 percent are open to his argument. If he gets half of those, he’s president.”
“Let this sink in slowly. Ensuring that Democrats continue to receive black votes in a monolithic block, it is in their interest for blacks to remain poor and resentful …”
” If blacks in larger numbers entered the middle class, more of them would likely start voting Republican. No wonder the left makes sure to reinforce the idea that your skin color or ethnicity should determine your ideology and your vote, and why dissenters like Clarence Thomas are demonized.”
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2016/05/van-jones-admits-dems-need-minorities-to-remain-poor-and-resentful.php
Is this the reason Democrats never seem to be able to make lives of Blacks in large cities they run better?
Highest murder rates St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit, New Orleans, Newark, NJ, Milwaukee, Washington, DC, Kansas City, Cincinnati, Memphis, Oakland, Atlanta, Chicago, …. you get the idea.
St. Louis has been electing Democratic mayors since 1949.
Both Baltimore and Oakland had Republican mayors as late as the 1960s.
Detroit last elected a Republican mayor in 1957.
Last Republican mayor of New Orleans elected in 1870.
Newark, N.J., hasn’t had a GOP mayor in more than a century.
Milwaukee had a Republican mayor last in 1908.
Washington, DC has never elected a Republican Mayor.
Last republican Mayor of Kansas City left office 1991.
Cincinnati, OH hasn’t elected a republican Mayor since 1984.
Last republican Mayor of Atlanta left office in 1879.
Last republican Mayor of Memphis left office in 1886.
Chicago’s last Republican mayor was elected in 1927.
If democrats really cared about Blacks and were tough on crime shouldn’t they have made a difference in these cities by now?
They have after all, had more than enough time.

Importing cheap labor for their mega wealthy campaign contributors to exploit.

Appears only core values career politicians have is getting massive campaign contributions from the mega rich one percent and making sure those campaign contributors are taken care of with legislation which will benefit them and thru awarding of government contracts and taxpayer dollars as reward for campaign contributions.

As for cooperation

For God’s sakes, is this guy for real? Can we ever get a politician who can at least pretend to act like an adult? The first six lines of the statement were fine “…. a deal struck this week between Pelosi, Schumer, and Trump ….want to govern for the good of the American people..”. He should’ve just ended it there. But, NO, he’s gotta sound like a five-year old and get in a little bashing of the other side. “Unlike the Republicans ……”. What a jerk! That was totally unnecessary. Just say we reached a compromise. We hope we can continue to work together in the future…. Nope, gotta be an idiot and stir the pot and cause trouble.

14 Mr. White September 11, 2017 at 5:09 PM

One word. “IDIOT”

15 Anonymous September 11, 2017 at 5:10 PM

Let me defend DeSaulnier.

He has no power. He has almost zero net worth.

Any creditable challenger could wipe him out.

So he is doing the only thing left to him -bloviating.

16 Mr. Fixit September 11, 2017 at 5:37 PM

Compromise??? Funny it doesn’t work with the democrats when they obstruct. This guy just gets to be an older jackass day after day.

17 Silva September 11, 2017 at 5:38 PM

Elwood #9, So we can all build up a good head of steam?

18 Fed up September 11, 2017 at 5:52 PM

The rest of us are mourning those killed on 9/11/01 and worrying about Irma’s and Harvey’s damage while this idiot is worrying about politics as usual. Have some respect and give it a rest for one day.

19 Cy Nical September 11, 2017 at 5:54 PM

Does he ever say anything without being partisan?

This is why politicians are despised.

20 George September 11, 2017 at 5:59 PM

Mark’s statement could also say… The deal struck this week between President Trump and Leaders Pelosi and Schumer illustrates that the President wants to work with the Democratic Party for the good of the American people”

Mark can never say another positive about the President.

21 Bumpyride September 11, 2017 at 6:01 PM

Hey Mark try keeping your mouth shut…

22 Muddhen September 11, 2017 at 6:10 PM

If people don’t like Mark so much, why does he keep getting reelected?

23 Person September 11, 2017 at 6:29 PM

I like how this total shmuck gives all credit to the dems. Trump reached out TO THEM because HE wants to work with them as well as his own party. This is one of many reasons why I love that a businessman and not another slimy politician was elected! Again, Trump did the reaching out and I give him all the credit! GOOD JOB MR. PRESIDENT!

24 Fred September 11, 2017 at 6:36 PM

Just remember he did not show up at the inauguration of our president he would rather March with the women in the pity party because their girl Hillary lost

25 vandy posh September 11, 2017 at 6:40 PM

Congressman DeSaulnier, When is your term in congress up?

26 Forsythe September 11, 2017 at 6:43 PM

I actually have to give Congressman Mark DeSaulnier credit for this one. Most Americans are not all that interested in whether their leaders are Democrats or Republicans. They actually want politicians who will:

Make America Great Again!

27 America September 11, 2017 at 7:14 PM

Can’t wait till Markie is out of office, so ignorant…

28 Elanor September 11, 2017 at 7:36 PM

Always appealing to the good of the American People, really is anyone really buying this. We need a politician that will stand with the people in all times, not when it conveniently suits them. Our president is doing just that.

29 1776vet September 11, 2017 at 8:26 PM

Let’s vote this slime ball out of office. Core values, right. Only values they have is against America and make us be like Europe. Oh I forgot one, or two-spend spend spend, tax tax tax.

30 Cautiously Informed September 11, 2017 at 8:32 PM

DeSourair is pathetic. Does he do anything of substance, value or importance? Does he actually do anything to improve things here in California? All he’s capable of doing is making boring banal statements.

In the meantime, the state of California deteriorates and crumbles.

31 Heads Will Roll September 11, 2017 at 8:37 PM

Wow! For a minute there I thought he had seen the light. But, then he had to to get a dig in. Petty and small for a man trying to convince us how magnanimous his party is … or was … or something.

32 Ricardoh September 11, 2017 at 8:54 PM

Why go into a long diatribe. The guy is a partisan hack.

33 PC September 11, 2017 at 9:57 PM

It seems that Mark DeS has mastered one-thing, Congressional blather.

34 Elwood September 11, 2017 at 10:30 PM

Feel the love!

35 Milene September 11, 2017 at 10:48 PM

Give it a rest, you hack. If you have to say something remember the 2977 victims who were murdered by a madman 16 years ago.

Hope you get voted out of office soon, you insensitive dolt.

36 grandmato3 September 12, 2017 at 6:35 AM

Ha, the haters come out whenever Mark says anything, and I mean anything. So, now what, because he called the Republicans out for what they do, which is stall and stack bills you people don’t like that either? Really you simply can’t have it both ways.

Need you be reminded that Mark won so he obviously has a strong following and what said is correct.

37 Fred P. September 12, 2017 at 7:36 AM

Oh, grandmato3….we’ve been waiting for you to come out and accuse those who don’t like Desaulnier as “haters.” Let me guess, you must be one of his staffers. You must LOVE to insult others – when we express dissatisfaction with a politician, you call us “haters.” Does that make you feel good? The rest of us are above personal insults.

Take a look at the above – out of 37 comments posted, all except one (yours) are taking him to task for doing nothing except issuing statements.

Got more news for you…. what is said is his opinion…which you happen to agree with. That is no more “correct” than anyone else agreeing with someone else’s opinion. Stating something is “correct” is implying that it is a FACT.

But I guess you liberals are not used to dealing with FACTS.

The only reason he has a “strong following” is that his district is 2/3 democrats, and most who identify with a political party vote the straight ticket. That doesn’t say he has a “strong following”, but says that the voters are too damn lazy to do their homework. For those of us who have been around a while, we’ve seen his actions from when he first entered politics. He’s been nothing more than an opportunist, positioning himself and waiting in the wings for the next position to open up.

That all being said, your party claims to be one of tolerance, diversity, compassion, diversity and proponents of free speech. Yet YOU personally insult others simply because they don’t like Desaulnier and have taken the time to express their dissatisfaction.

Sounds like you’re nothing more than a hypocrite. Now grow up.

38 AlwaysBePositive September 12, 2017 at 7:38 AM

Thank you Rep DeSaulnier for representing the views of the over 70% of constituents that voted for you.

Hey R’s, if you don’t like him, who are you going to run next year? Maybe you’d enjoy CA more if you moved out of a district that doesn’t express your political feelings. And if you are someone that feels CA is in disastrous shape, you just aren’t paying attention. 6th largest economy in the world, leads nation in job creation and GDP. Reality bites when your view is not based on it.

39 RANDOM TASK September 12, 2017 at 7:50 AM

@23 people are paid for pmvote party that is why blacks latinos poor all have to vote dem because the dem party threatens them with lies that they will lose their free ride and have to actually work and be a citizen rather than being a system sucker ….yes they are threatened to vote dem or lose freebees …..and don’t act like you don’t know that ….your remark was pugnant and just as obnoxious as a de slacker statement ……..keeping people down and maintaining control by threats is how Dems work they don’t hide it and you as a dem voted allow it …..yet throw urin and feces in protest of a president that has dont absolutely nothing to you and I am sure you cheer every time it happens …..when politicos become us or them nobody is being represented …..it’s 2 gangs taking over territory and the people become the fodder …..you invoke this like this and stand for this as a dem and hypocritically denounce the other side constantly yet the Dems are the bullies the liars the oppressors …..how have they helped blacks and or latinos or bums or LBGTQXYZ ……THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING …THEY USE THEM AS PUNCHLINES AND MEDIA FODDER …WAKE UP ITS the 1930’s and Hitlery is trying to overthrow the gov so she can take over

40 Cy Nical September 12, 2017 at 7:58 AM

grandmato3, You don’t get it. People are sick of the partisan politics on BOTH sides. People want politicians who work for them, not their respective parties. This blame game as played by DeSaulnier does nothing for the good of his constituents.
The strong following you cite are the partisan idiots who know nothing about what he’s done, or not done. It’s all about name recognition and unfortunately in California if there’s a D after his name the sheep will vote for anyone.

41 Pac Islander September 12, 2017 at 8:38 AM

Why do people keep electing him? He is one of the reasons I left the Dem Party…

42 Anon September 12, 2017 at 9:38 AM

Republican President. 240 Republican representatives. Bill passed what, 345 to 90, so that means if all 90 against were Republicans that 150 vote for it?

So explain to me how it is that only the Democrats get credit for “bipartisanship” when it took a Republican president and at least 150 Republican representatives to pass the bill?

Typical partisan idiocy from Mark.

43 America September 12, 2017 at 10:10 AM

Oh, just love those Democrat core values which include the murder of life in the womb and forever changing the core of family life. Take a look around you, Mark, and look at the violence in our country. Your brand of core values shows up in all the rioting at campuses, where conservatives are not allowed to speak. Your core values are repugnant and disgusting, as we see looting in hurricane devastated areas. People have to work two jobs to feed their families and to put a roof over their heads. American citizens are thrown under the bus, because your core values insist that illegals be hired. Our children who serve our country, who are lucky enough to come back alive, where are your core values for them? Where are the jobs for our heroes? Mark, you are so smug. But you can go on defending your “core values.” I am glad I still have my vote….

44 Fred P. September 12, 2017 at 11:40 AM

@ABP – And Desaulnier certainly had nothing to do with job growth, GDP or state economics. Nice try at attempting to deflect – but you failed.

1. Look at http://www.kiplinger.com/slideshow/business/T019-S010-states-with-the-fastest-job-growth/index.html . That shows CA as #9 in job growth. Get it?

2. Know why CA has the largest GDP? How about having the largest population and the most number of jobs? Ever think of that? Now imagine if CA were cut in half; you’d have two states, both behind Texas.

Obviously, you aren’t aware of the inability of non-incumbents to get a good foothold in this state. Running against incumbents is nearly impossible because of franking privileges and name recognition. This happens REGARDLESS of the value of the rep – which is what’s being discussed….in case you weren’t aware. Again, he was voted in SOLELY by riding the coattails of Miller.

Your comment about “moving to another district” is exactly what I expect from you. You’re just another straight-ticket voter – one of the 70+% – that toes the party line regardless of their capabilities. Again, I ask – show me ONE piece of legislation that Desaulnier authored that made a difference nationwide….since he is in Congress. Can’t stand to have someone challenge your status quo? Then I suggest YOU move.

Again – whether or not he agrees with Trump, his antics (sit-in while grinning away and not attending the inauguration) are nothing more than his version of a tantrum.

44+ comments on this blog and only 2 are for him…. Yeah, I know that 70% voted for him…but it sure is telling that only two of that 70% bother to get involved and make their opinions known.

45 AlwaysBePositive September 12, 2017 at 12:47 PM

@fp 45
1. Kiplinger’s article looks like they are projecting growth, I rely on the historical facts presented by the US Dept. of Labor. As of 7.17 CA had fallen to second in jobs added (behind Texas) over the last year. Predictions are guesses…get it?
2. This point is specious at best. GDP is a unit measurement, is CA was cut in half we’d have two more US Senators also.
3. Talk about a nothing point. Incumbents are advantaged around the nation, not just here. You seriously believe that free postage is a difference maker?

Your comments about straight ticket voting is laughable…take a look in the mirror. Almost as laughable as thinking the makeup of this thread is equal to the makeup of the voters in the district. National legislation? How about if you tell me one piece of important national legislation that has been passed since he was elected to Congress by anyone in the House?

46 kate September 12, 2017 at 1:50 PM

Thank you, Mark DeSaulnier.

47 Cautiously Informed September 12, 2017 at 2:45 PM

AlwaysBePositive/39,
How much of that worlds 6th largest economy money is trickling down to the working class? Have you noticed what’s happening crime wise here in the state? Have driven on any of the roads lately? Have you by chance noticed the never ending rising prices in stores? Are you happy with relentless tax increases? Have you seen the states deteriorating infrastructure?

Sure, things here in California are just peachy.

48 Goober September 12, 2017 at 4:49 PM

Just another leftist liberal logic ignorant comment from Mark. That’s nothing new.

49 AlwaysBePositive September 13, 2017 at 7:20 AM

Please give me a location in the world where all of the above are NOT happening.

50 Class September 14, 2017 at 1:03 PM

Middhen #23 – you ask why he keeps getting re-elected? Here’s the answer.

Because he has never had a decent challenger. Even another Democrat. Someone who could reach across the aisle without being two faced and then turning around and belittling the person. An actual decent person. Not just a “pretend” nice person who will put his grimy arm around your shoulders in order to pretend he is your buddy for a photograph. (Omg, the memory of that gives me the creeps.)

A decent challenger could topple him. Don’t believe me? Check out Bonilla/Glazer.

Oh, and if DeSaulnier ever gets a real challenger? His big guns will be –

“But I am sick! And I fight through it for YOU, my beloved constituents! I have had one million and one town halls when I was throwing up in the waste basket! You have to re-elect me now, right? Right???? You just have to!”

God forbid you ever elect someone who is truly a decent person.

Hey, but what do I know
