When parents took us kids camping each Summer they always made sure to pack toilet tissue.
And now finally we learn why that was needed.

Cowellian August 18, 2017 at 7:33 PM

Atticus, I was going to play your ‘Name the city’ and ‘Name it’ challenges, but they were both captioned with the answers – you’re making it too easy. I love your challenge questions.
I wouldn’t have got the B & T anyway, though.
Thanks for the post – great, as always.

Atticus Thraxx; Nice escape…good job cops:
It looks like he’s doing something with the lighter before he disappears out the back of the squad car, but I have watched that a good many times, and I can’t connect the dots. What happened? I do love the sleepy little phant, and how everyone comes running to help when little ones have a misstep or a fall over.

Businesses and agencies that do not respond to emails really tick me off! I’ve sent several to Concord city agencies and a couple to private companies, and they have totally blown me off, even though their websites say they will respond. Screw them! I’m rooting for anarchy now.

Cowellian, I just noticed that Nashville is on the “solar eclipse boulevard”. Please, would you write about any changes in animal (including human!) behavior you might notice?

Shasta Daisy, will you travel to a favorite state/spot for viewing?

Irene August 19, 2017 at 6:22 AM

The Animal: I was by Oak Grove Middle School just before they let the kids out for the day and saw a woman change her baby’s diaper and toss it next to a fence. How gross and disrespectful leaving that type of garbage for the homeowner to pick up.

Concordejet August 19, 2017 at 9:59 AM

loaded diapers

Mika August 19, 2017 at 10:20 AM

@Irene–they do that at YVHigh school all the time. No class.

KAD August 19, 2017 at 11:04 AM

I saw on the news Thursday night that their was already traffic jams in Oregon due to people traveling to view the eclipse. There was a 15 mile traffic jam.

KAD August 19, 2017 at 11:05 AM

Cowellian August 19, 2017 at 11:29 AM

Nashville is in the total eclipse area, but Camp Boxwell, our local Scout camp is pretty much at ground zero. Right now, there are well over 3,000 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and family members camped out at Boxwell, learning about Astronomy and earning various badges. Metro Nashville Schools was the last school district to decide to shut down for the day. They realized that the shadow was on the wall, so to speak.

I’m staying home on Monday with my new ISO-approved eclipse glasses, hoping we don’t get another thunderstorm. My dogs don’t need much of an excuse to go nuts, but I’ll see if they come up with some new and interesting eclipse-related behavior. Hey, maybe I’ll come up with some new and interesting eclipse-related behavior.

Football jamboree last night at Pitt…all teams looked good. Anyone else go?

Anonx August 19, 2017 at 1:36 PM

My daughter lives in Salem and she said that some gas stations are already out of gas and that traffic is a nightmare!

Jojo Potato August 19, 2017 at 2:25 PM

Meanwhile in Pendleton traffic is moving well on 395 southbound divided freeway. Lots of gas. 2 hours to our campground.

Shasta Daisy August 19, 2017 at 3:47 PM

Hi, from Lincoln City, Oregon.
First city in the US for totality.
Waiting for the sun ☀️ to disappear.

Peace ✌🏼

football fan August 19, 2017 at 4:12 PM

High school football starts next week. There must be some Mt Diablo alumni on claycord. Help support the football team. The players play with a lot of heart but the team is small. The team plays against some very good teams. How about getting out there and giving the boys some support. Same goes for Ygnacio Valley.

LG August 19, 2017 at 5:23 PM

Does anyone here have any experience with Lyft or Uber? Which service is better?

Cowellian August 19, 2017 at 5:29 PM

Enjoy your trip, Shasta! I hope you have a clear view and get some great memories.

Antler August 19, 2017 at 11:00 PM

Glad you opted for a “front row” seat, Shasta! Is it already very crowded in Lincoln City?

Cowellian, thank you, the Scout gathering sounds epic!
And please do work on those behavioral innovations! May we expect pictures of same?

Well, tomorrow is the big day – eclipse day. Will go out on the deck a couple of times to check it out. I can remember 3 partial eclipses and where I was. What I noticed most was the strange light, everything seemed grayer and contrast was lower. It didn’t seem darker, probably because my pupils automatically adjusted to the brightness.

Kirkwood August 20, 2017 at 11:53 AM

football fan – I went to Diablo in ’54 – ’57. The Varsity football team, coached by Rod Franz went undefeated for several years. The Friday night game attendance was probably 80% students representing both teams. Election of the head “yell’ Cheer Leader by the student body was a popular event. Anybody remember the card stunts? In the center of the stands was an area about 50 seats square. Anybody could sit there but you had to wear a white shirt and participate in the performance. Each seat had a couple of 24” square cards with a different color on each side, and a sheet of instructions. Upon the command “everybody up”, each would hold the specified card in front of their faces. The result was a graphic seen by the stands across the field.

Cowellian August 20, 2017 at 12:41 PM

I finally downloaded the Sky app. I’m pretty sure I can find the sun, even when the moon is blocking it, but it would be cool to be able to find Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Neptune in the darkened sky.

Monarch butterflies – many sightings on front yard milkweed plants, both yesterday and today.

Silva August 20, 2017 at 3:52 PM

Thanks for the heads up Mary Fouts! I haven’t seen ’em over here yet. I discovered I have to hit the milkweed patch for those aphids that love them so much. I always wonder if I’m wiping out Monarch eggs at the same time! But left to their own devices, the aphids finish off the plants PDQ. Sigh.

Lizzie August 20, 2017 at 4:40 PM

Has anyone taken BART to Oakland Airport–Pro’s and con’s please.

Dr. Jellyfinger August 20, 2017 at 5:14 PM

Lizzie…. if you can make it to the airport alive… that’s the pro.
It’s fairly nice from there on…. if not, well… that’s the con.

Robbery Watcher August 21, 2017 at 8:03 AM

A passenger was beaten up and robbed yesterday by 4 thugs at the Coliseum Station.

Wuzzie August 21, 2017 at 2:40 PM

Isn’t it actually safer and much easier to take BART to SFO rather than OAK?

Silva August 21, 2017 at 6:08 PM

The Three mules are back in town, anyone see them? They are actually down to one mule (Little Girl) and one man these days, John Sears (the man) is looking for two more mules.

Mary Fouts August 21, 2017 at 8:19 PM

I am tired. And Sick. Of people in south PH letting there dogs off leash, to wander around.

A couple of weeks ago, that resulted in a dog fight, with a dog fatality. This evening, while fixing dinner, heard another dog fight. Ran outside, the aggressor dogs’ owner (she is a physician at the County Hospital in Martinez) said that she was ‘just backing the vehicle out of the garage, and had just let the dogs out.’

Apparently no dog or human was terribly hurt. But I have no patience with anyone who thinks they can let their dogs roam loose in the neighborhood while the person is backing her vehicle out of the driveway. You suck.

I have 2 dogs. They never wander off leash in the neighborhood. Never.

Giddyup August 22, 2017 at 5:11 AM

Pro: BART from OAK airport is a cheap alternative to a private shuttle, if you don’t count the damage to your psyche. Con: The one time I took BART home from OAK, it took me longer to get from Oakland to Clayton on BART than it took me to fly from Oakland to San Diego.

Terry Kremin August 22, 2017 at 2:59 PM

what was up with the high speed car chase on 4 about an hour ago? west bound out through Martinez and the returned on eastbound 4 through Concord to Pitt

Concerned August 23, 2017 at 11:40 AM

Any one know what is going on at 4888 Clayton Rd police dog and they are not letting anyone in or out of the place.

Mary Fouts August 23, 2017 at 2:21 PM

@Lizzie – Re: BART and airports, I have not taken BART to Oakland. The Coliseum stop is iffy at best, and I have never felt safe there when traveling alone. I either drive myself to Oakland airport, or hubs takes me. (Quit using traditional shuttle service years ago after 2 trips in a row I was not picked up.). Uber or Lyft also an option.

I do use BART to SFO when possible (often not for my long haul flights, as I leave on Sunday morning and BART doesn’t run early enough, also never when my trip involves an evening flight.) Suggest using ear protection, however, as the rail screeching noise otherwise leaves me with a headache when I travel from PH to SFO.

Another post from Mostly Cajun about his job.
If you have a child or grandchild wondering what to do now high school is over an they can’t decide on what job or wanting to change jobs, why not go to a Junior College and get a skill set where they can make $60,000 a year plus.

Take a look
With a few years experience will never be out of a job.

Have a job similar to Mostly Cajun but mine doesn’t involve travel and is a little more complicated but like him Love what I’m doing.

Would anyone here have pictures of the old RollerWorld skating rink in Concord. Any pictures from the outside to the interior would be great. I’m doing a personal video project and could use these pictures in the video. The project is about my wife. She passed away 2 year ago. we met at rollorworld back in 1979, we married 3 years later. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Why I hate Google. On my recent trip we were following the directions east bound highway 14 into Cody Wyoming. I could see that the stop light in the middle of town would be the highway 120 intersection where we should go north. But we followed he lady to turn left a few blocks away and through a residential neighborhood ( hi kids! ) and then connect up with 120. First of all we used a small neighborhood street and secondly we didn’t get to see downtown. I’m sure some “smart” programmer had decided that this was a better idea but they just don’t care about the people they are effecting. Much like my street in WC where we are inundated with excess traffic directed by Google. That’s why I hate Google!

Silva August 24, 2017 at 4:03 PM

Mal, I’m sorry for your loss. What a nice project, I wish you great success. I have no memory of RollerWorld, I don’t think I ever knew about it.

Kirkwood August 24, 2017 at 4:08 PM

Jojo – GPS’s usually offer the choice of calculating the shortest OR fastest way to your destination. I brought up a map of Cody and measured the distances of both the shortest and fastest ways, 14 Eb to 120 Nb. The route through the residential area was a quarter mile shorter than the route along the main drag. Check your setup. Also, GPS knows nothing about signals or potential traffic.

What’s going on with all of the sirens and chopper around Clayton Rd. and Ayers?

anon August 24, 2017 at 7:36 PM

CPD and helicopter are searching for a suspect that robbed the Pet Food Express out on Ygnacio Valley Rd.

Ghetto bird up near Newhall Park! Anyone know what is happening?

bb August 24, 2017 at 7:52 PM

Quiet now, hope the cops got the thief!

Anon-2-U August 24, 2017 at 8:43 PM

F’n seriously? They robbed Pet Food Express? How desperate does someone have to be to rob a pet food store? I shop there all the time, I hope everyone is okay.

I was listening to the scanner, it sounded like the suspect was on foot, because they really didn’t get any farther than Michigan Blvd., or Roundtree Place and Drive.

mustang mom August 25, 2017 at 5:47 AM

That’s sad about Pet Food Express.

Cowellian August 25, 2017 at 5:12 PM

KAD August 25, 2017 at 5:16 PM

How scary for the employees of the Pet Food Express store. That is terrible.
