Congressman DeSaulnier Issues Statement on President Trump’s Response to Violence in Charlottesville

August 15, 2017 15:30 pm · 62 comments

Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) issued the following statement after President Trump reiterated his belief that “both sides” were to blame for the violence in Charlottesville:

“By once again attempting to placate evil the President surrendered what little moral authority he had left. It was not long ago that millions of Americans put their lives on the line to fight fascism and white supremacy. Failing to condemn those who espouse the same worldviews that Americans died fighting against is sacrilege, and undermines the essence of America.”

1 The Mamba August 15, 2017 at 3:32 PM

He did come out against it today, Mark. Keep Up! Sad!

2 HolyMolyDoughnutShop August 15, 2017 at 3:35 PM

BOTH SIDES WERE TO BLAME IDIOT

3 Town August 15, 2017 at 3:42 PM

Now the big question. What idiot thought it was a good idea to issue premits to both groups? Makes you really buy into the tin foil hat conspiracies that this stuff is being allowed to happen. I can’t even get a permit to hold a group bike ride.

4 KassG August 15, 2017 at 3:43 PM

Nice, as usual he can’t see beyond his own hate for President Trump. How about Antifa’s responsibility Mark? Of course nothing to say there.
I missed DeSaulniers comments regarding Obama’s statements during all of the BLM riots and murdering of cops. Guess he supports left wing rioters like BLM and Antifa.

5 Oldman August 15, 2017 at 3:44 PM

@Scooter
Your ignorance is overwhelming.

6 Original G August 15, 2017 at 3:46 PM

After so many years of stellar representation by Congressman George Miller Mark DeSaulnier is a great disappointment.

7 Dave August 15, 2017 at 3:48 PM

What is it called when a politician picks and chooses only the popular topics to address purely for the sake of advancing their own careers with their constituents? (see Mark.)

8 MoJo August 15, 2017 at 3:59 PM

Marky is once again just following the Democrats #1 rule-“Never let a good crisis go to waste” I’m surprised he hasn’t tried to author a bill requiring a background check and 10 day waiting period on purchasing a vehicle.

9 It makes sense to me August 15, 2017 at 4:01 PM

Mark to bad you were not at that Riot.

10 WC August 15, 2017 at 4:03 PM

Wait Mark, you didn’t condemn them in this statement. You just condemned the President. So your not part of the solution. Can you work on something real instead of just making statements about the President’s statements.

11 SF oh August 15, 2017 at 4:23 PM

Hey, here’s a crazy idea: what if we find out what actually happened before making blanket statements and insisting that others do the same. After all, three people died as a result of this chaos. How about reviewing any security cameras that were around? Maybe press cameras were rolling too. Both sides had the right to free speech and peaceful assembly – whether you agree with what they’re saying or not. Maybe we should find out who started the trouble and who threw the first punch. Where were the cops – could the tension have been controlled before it got out of hand? No doubt the guy in the car was a lunatic and deserves the worst punishment possible for killing Heather Heyer and injuring many others. But that’s the only fact we know so far. So, Mark, let’s try exercising some due process and seek the truth. If you can’t assume both sides are innocent before proven guilty – you’re as closed-minded as the marchers.

12 Ricardoh August 15, 2017 at 4:28 PM

The left just hates Trump and they will end up cutting off their nose to spite their face.
The people protesting the taking down the statue of Robert E Lee, who by the way did not own slaves unlike George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, had a permit for their protest. The anti fa left wingers came there to fight and did not have a permit.
Mark DeSaulnier is not good enough to kiss President Trump boots.

13 Ricardoh August 15, 2017 at 4:33 PM

#3 The anti-fa did not have a permit. They came prepared to start a fight. They do that for any conservative speaker or conservative gathering. What they will end up doing is making right wing groups stronger and more violent. This could end up very badly if they are not stopped.

14 Cellophane August 15, 2017 at 4:48 PM

“stellar representation by Congressman George Miller ”

LOL

Delusion is so much fun to behold.

15 at it again August 15, 2017 at 4:52 PM

Mark clearly is delusional and should be voted out of office. I am sure he has more ideas on how to raise more taxes off the back of the poor and what’s left of the middle class, while he sips champagne in fancy restaurants that we can not afford.

16 RANDOM TASK August 15, 2017 at 4:53 PM

Uhhh TAPS MARK ON SHOULDER ….dude your white and a supremist politician ….your bashing yourself ….and actually nullifying anything someone has told you to say ….did waters write your speech for you ….are you capable of anything but blaming another party for your parties antics and the last eight years of spouting racial this and that ….even Morgan freeman is sick of it and wants to know why he has to be an African American when he was born here why can’t he be AMERCIAN …..you label and then blast labeling …you bully and blast bullying ….you are a hypocrite elitest and point fingers at elitest ……dude make your own path to help the people instead of allowing your party to squash them ……de slacker wake up you have not even made one statement that is your own …..have a spine or are you allready in the dem conga line of free benefits and money for life while the people you so desperately want to believe you are for them are being gashed

17 Willis August 15, 2017 at 4:54 PM

Both sides Marky. Where was your moral authority when you would not allow your employees to take time off from work, threatening they would be fired if the did so. Or how you worked them the max amount of part time hours so you didn’t have to pay them benefits.

You’re a typical elitist liberal Mark. Better off going back in the restaurant business and serving used butter.

18 Not a Trump Fan August 15, 2017 at 4:55 PM

Are you people kidding me??? Watching what went on Friday night by the KKK, White Supremacists, Neo-Nazi’s marching with their torches is indefensible. Regardless of party, (I’m registered Republican) this should never be OK in 2017. Then a nut job white supremacist mows down peaceful people walking 2 hours after the melee in the park had been broken up killing one and Trump (who has NO filter on deeds by every other religion/race/party) says NOTHING!! And when he finally does, he doesn’t call out the actual group responsible for this until he is shamed into it 2 days later and oh by the way starts his remarks with how well he thinks he’s doing. And the cherry on top, today goes back to his original statement of blame and actually says “there were some good people in that torch march on Friday night.” SHAMEFUL. And you people just want to criticize Mark DeSaulnier. DISGUSTING!

19 D August 15, 2017 at 5:04 PM

The left is so filled with hatred towards Trump, no matter what he says he will be criticized for it,
Where was Mark when Obama invited a Muslim terrorist support group to the White House? Or when he invited Black Lives Matter, after they said, “what do we want? Dead cops, when do we want them? Now!”
By the way, in 1991 Donald Trump denounced The KKK, David Duke and Pat Buchanan.

20 NunYa August 15, 2017 at 5:06 PM

Hey Mark, so two wrongs make a right?

And yes we do criticize Mark. He represents ignorant folks like yourself who refuse to see the violence brought on by those on YOUR side.

But Hey, Have A Nice Day.

21 Rollo Tomasi August 15, 2017 at 5:11 PM

@ Town #3:

The permit for the “Unite the Right” demonstration was initially approved by city officials, but for another location. The organizer sued and, represented by the ACLU, prevailed in getting the permit approved for his desired location. I have yet to find any information that the counter protestors had a permit to assemble.

22 Eudamonia August 15, 2017 at 5:40 PM

@ Not a Trump Fan,
Thank you.

23 Original G August 15, 2017 at 6:09 PM

What values are important to our nation?
Abhorrent as Neo-Nazi’s are and what they represent they have Rights.

” Neo-Nazi’s marching with their torches is indefensible. Regardless of party, (I’m registered Republican) this should never be OK in 2017.”

So then you are in favor of the abolition of Constitutional Rights for any group you disapprove of ?

If selective application of rights is the new standard, is it appropriate for a member of Workers World Party to set about to destroy a Confederate Soldiers Monument ?

http://www.heraldsun.com/news/local/counties/durham-county/article167300007.html

OR After incessant spewing of leftist hate propaganda and incitement by progressive liberal politicians and their complicit media has it’s desired effect on impressionable less than rational thinkers this happens.

“ABC reports that his yard was covered with hand-painted anti-Trump signs and was often filled with cars.” …
“An anti-Trump activist has been accused of executing his neighbor who was a prominent Republican supporter.”
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4793016/Anti-Trump-activist-executed-Republican-neighbor.html

When does rule of law and Constitutional rights end replaced by the ravings and violence of.

24 It makes sense to me August 15, 2017 at 6:22 PM

George Miller please come out of retirement.

25 Amy August 15, 2017 at 6:29 PM

Mark is so predictable.

26 Concord_Resident August 15, 2017 at 6:30 PM

Mark, the DEMS LOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GET OVER IT…

Unite with the people and Make America Great Again and quit complaining and HATING…

And I don’t recall you making any statements when the cops were killed while Obama was in Office…

27 Paul Barnes August 15, 2017 at 6:33 PM

Does anyone actually know if the suspect acted to further a political agenda or was he just insane?

28 anonible August 15, 2017 at 6:34 PM

The exiting attendees (not all of them were members of a white supremacist group) of the rally were herded down a street lined with violent Antifa protesters.

The protesters threatened violence, threw feces, screamed, threw rocks, waved bats and had a fire cannon. The police did not try to clear the area or protect the attendees of the rally. The laughed openly at the melee, according to several eye witnesses as reported on the radio.

Racial violence is not acceptable from either side, as President Trump

“Racism is evil — and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans,” Trump said in response to the attacks in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend.

29 Regular Guy August 15, 2017 at 6:39 PM

Americans died fighting against communism, but that doesn’t stop Mark from embracing it’s tenets.

30 Trucker Bug August 15, 2017 at 6:40 PM

It’s amazing how ill informed most of you are. It was a unite the right rally, not a neo nazi, white supremacist, racial anything gathering. Simply a unite the right. We’re there racist groups there? Yes. But it was not set out to be a racial event.

Antifa and the usual trouble makers arrived and got things going as usual and as usual there will be no recognizing the part they play.

Yes a guy rammed his car into people. Killing one. Yes that’s tragic. However many of the left wing supporters injured people as well with batons, rocks. Bottles of feces and urine.

2 police officers also died when they crashed their helicopter.

Simply put. The racial element is conveinant propaganda as the media is and has tried to tie trump to white supremacy since the beginning. It appears to be working as now his was some white power protest instead of a unite the right rally as it was originally designed

31 Fred August 15, 2017 at 6:43 PM

Mark does nothing but issue prepared statements handed to him by the DNC.

Useless as teats on a boat…. just has to pander to the non-thinkers…

32 Not a Trump Fan August 15, 2017 at 7:10 PM

Hey #23 Rollo Tomasi,
Did you actually watch the Charlottesville press conference? I did. Yes, the KKK was issued a permit but they did not follow the orders in the permit about where they were to enter the park and march. So the efforts to keep the peace when the KKK met up with the protesters became more than they could initially handle. And to be clear, I don’t advocate violence from any one. The few bad apples that fought with the KKK should be held accountable for their actions. But if not for the KKK provocation and lack of following the orders of their permit to express their bigoted views, this may have been a peaceful march. And lets not forget, 3 people died because the KKK reared its’ ugly head. The people who died were not killed by the “counter protesters.”

33 Mr. Fixit August 15, 2017 at 7:40 PM

Mark, Mark, Mark. Just jump on the liberal bandwagon and lead the parade.
Funny how we put up with Obama for eight years. Donald Trump is the President!! Sorry again your candidate lost. Do something worthwhile and stop interfering. You are a complete jackass and I’m embarrassed that you are my representative!!!

34 WC August 15, 2017 at 9:06 PM

35 Styles August 15, 2017 at 9:08 PM

36 Nature Lover August 15, 2017 at 9:09 PM

I’m no fan of Trump but he does make point. There are plenty of nuts on the left too, especially the ones in Oakland who like to block the Freeway.

37 Teamster August 15, 2017 at 9:28 PM

When is Mark up for reelection? I can’t wait to vote this bloke out of office.

38 Observation August 15, 2017 at 9:36 PM

Based on the response to Mark’s statements, how did he get to votes to be elected. Does his followers even check in here?

39 Cautiously Informed August 15, 2017 at 9:52 PM

Incompetent ineffective sterile DeSourair does nothing more than issue weak banal platitudes.

Meanwhile, the state crumbles and deteriorates.

40 Elwood August 15, 2017 at 10:26 PM

Is there no end to Marky Mark’s stupid statements?

Just this morning in the politics thread I was wondering when we’d get another pompous pronouncement by the former Republican bartender.

41 Rollo Tomasi August 15, 2017 at 10:47 PM

Hey 35 Trump fan:

Relax skippy. Someone posed a question and I offered up some info that is readily available. Next time you feel the need to lecture someone, go pound sand until the feeling subsides.

42 Dalinian August 15, 2017 at 11:22 PM

Amazing indeed, the number of hate-filled posters here, too bogged down in their “Cognitive Dissonance” to even hear themselves…My uncle was with Patton’s “Anti-Fa” in WW2…He told us about a concentration camp they liberated….As far as I’m concerned, the KKK, and the Nazis have NO right to exist in our Democracy, and I will fight them all I can…And thank you,Congressman…I am glad I voted for you…

I love how Anfitfa, BLM and the other racist hate filled left wing groups that showed up are considered “counter protesters” and not what they actually are. 47 RANDOM TASK August 16, 2017 at 7:29 AM

One side hates minorities and the other side hates people who hate minorities. Ok, Two sides!

It’s just like D-Day at Normandy.
Two sides.

Allies and the Nazi’s.
Lots of violence on BOTH sides!
Ok?

Ruined a beautiful Beach.
Could have become a real nice golf course!

49 TIFOKCIS August 16, 2017 at 7:53 AM

Trump should have nuked all white people and made the PLD camp happy.

Yep, that’s how stupid the left sounds.

50 Rollo Tomasi August 16, 2017 at 10:04 AM

@ 52:

“One side hates minorities and the other side hates people who hate minorities. Ok, Two sides!”

Correctomundo! And both sides have the right to peaceably assemble (these days with the requisite permit) regardless of how despicable their beliefs.

Nice try with the Normandy thing. Problem is, the Nazis invaded several sovereign countries by force, and were rightfully defeated and their leaders convicted of many crimes. That’s a far cry from a group assembled in a park by permission of their local government to petition said government for a redress of their grievances.

51 Concerned Citizen of Clayton August 16, 2017 at 10:12 AM

“What little moral authority.” Mark, please look in the mirror.

You need to go. TR’s is waiting. Oh, that’s right, TR’s closed under your guidance.

Go Trump! Make America Great once again.

52 Comeback Kid August 16, 2017 at 10:14 AM

Please come back, George Miller. DeSaulnier is such a tool.

53 SF oh August 16, 2017 at 10:50 AM

I have to laugh at all of these idiots who are suddenly so offended by statues that have been in place for 50-100 years. Now they all have to be taken down – right now! Three people lost their lives in a fight that started over a statue in a park that had been there since 1924. How stupid is that? Why can’t people think for themselves anymore? They listen to CNN, and other news outlets, whose main focus is click bait to get people to watch their station. Dumb people – with nothing else to do – get all riled up and are willing to kill or be killed over nothing. The riot in Charlottesville was not World War II – the BLM & Antifa were not fighting Hitler. The White Nationalists were not fighting Martin Luther King. It was just a bunch of brainless fools who believe everything they hear on the news or Facebook or whatever and can’t logically reason the facts out for themselves. The whole thing accomplished nothing. But, of course, our politicians like Bandwagon-Mark have to jump in and try to cause more division.

54 WC Citizen August 16, 2017 at 11:04 AM

@46 Agreed.

My grandfather, an Italian immigrant who did not speak English when he arrived in the USA at age 3, fought the “real” Nazi’s as an AMERICAN pilot in 1944. I can guarantee you that it would not have taken him 48 hours to denounce the wannabe Nazi protestors or other hate-based groups. He saw first hand the brutality of hate. It is hard to believe people continue to make excuses for groups like the KKK, neo-Nazi’s and others that claim superiority over other Americans.

55 Fred August 16, 2017 at 12:28 PM

But it’s ok per Dalinian 47 that left wing hate groups exist ,. And ok per sesaulnirr..

56 Fred August 16, 2017 at 12:54 PM

I guess it’s also ok to rewrite history by pulling down those statues….

Shades of 1984…

57 Donna G. Campbell August 16, 2017 at 1:29 PM

I read these emails and I wonder just how many of the people who have nothing good to say, volunteer their time and money to make positive changes in our city, state and federal governments. I know Mark has done a lot of very good things. Visit his website or go to one of his meetings. George Miller was a good man. Mark has followed in his footsteps and for that I am thankful.

58 MadMom August 16, 2017 at 2:40 PM

This thread makes me sad for America. My father, uncles and many family friends all fought against what was represented in this past weekend’s violence. A woman lost her life and all I see is indifference to people other than oneself. That’s what I see from #45 and that’s what I mostly see here in this thread.
Now that’s sad

59 CC Parent August 16, 2017 at 3:27 PM

@not a trump fan That is what you can expect from most who comment here. If you want to see what caused all this watch the Vice episode about last weekend. The right got exactly what they wanted out of this and they blame the victims of the murderer driving the car into the crowd.

60 Silva August 16, 2017 at 3:41 PM

I’m sickened by Trump’s response that there are good nazis. I dearly miss my WWII Vet relatives who fought on foreign soil to liberate them from real nazi fascists, but I’m glad they are not here to see the sad little wannabees that descended upon Charlottesville. God help America.

61 TIFOKCIS August 16, 2017 at 3:46 PM

You are wrong again Silva. Hundreds of thousands of the German kids had no idea what they were doing. Just like you they were brain washed.

62 Silva August 16, 2017 at 4:54 PM

I really do enjoy it when Trump followers explain history! Said no one who’s studied history.
