” When millions of Americans turn their faces skyward to witness the nation’s first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse in a century, many will reach for specially designed sunglasses, but experts caution the public to stay clear of unsafe counterfeits.

Even as makers of certified, safety-tested solar eye ware rushed to meet surging demand before the August 21 eclipse, they have joined astronomers and optometrists in warning of defective knockoffs flooding the U.S. market.”

Back in the late 60s I was 12 and our school was making a big deal out of a near total eclipse. I didn’t care then and I don’t care now. What’s all the fuss about? I mean really I just don’t get it…

6 Ancient Mariner August 11, 2017 at 9:07 PM

I use a very dark arc-welding mask for watching eclipses. No problems so far.
I wonder if we’ll have the crescent-shaped spots of sunlight (through the leaves) on the ground again.

11 Ancient Mariner August 12, 2017 at 8:34 AM

@ Dr. Jellyfinger no 10:
It’s a note to the milkman.
You’d write your note, roll it up and tuck it down into the neck of one of the empties you left out for the milkman to pick up when he brought your new milk.
The notes might say ” One extra pint, please” or “two chocolate milks and one cream”, etc.
This guy’s note, seemingly innocuous and typical, is the symptom of his girlfriend’s leaving him – no need for more milk, he’s the only one here, now.

12 Dr. Jellyfinger August 12, 2017 at 9:20 AM

Ancient Mariner ~ That was friggin brilliant! Really… I never put that together… it makes perfect sense now.
But I did understand Melanie’s song.

13 Kentucky Derby August 12, 2017 at 10:53 AM

If you understand Melanie’s song, you’re doing better than most. Thanks for the chuckle.

Maybe she was on LSD.

14 Shoulda Coulda August 12, 2017 at 12:02 PM

@ Kentucky Derby

Melanie performed in the rain at Woodstock.
When the rain stopped some members of the
audience lit candles to show that everything
was bright and okay. Melanie was so moved
by the sight that she wrote this song about it.

15 I'm The Urban Spaceman August 12, 2017 at 12:24 PM

Melanie’s song was inspired by her performance at Woodstock, looking out at the massive crowd.
sample lyric:
“So raise the candles high cause if you
Don’t we could stay black against the night
Oh raise them higher again and if you
Do we could stay dry against the rain”
Background vocal group is the Bay Area’s own Edwin Hawkins Singers.

A day late but I couldn’t finish my book yesterday. Wake of the Red Witch by Garland Roark, 1946 was also a John Wayne movie years ago. Of course the movie rewrote a lot of the story but was still a good adventure movie. The book is for anyone who not only loves the South Pacific but the majesty of the old time sailing ships. This author can write descriptions in a way that can make you see what his pen is trying to show you. Even though it is without all the sex and foul language you find in today’s writings, this is NOT a boy’s adventure tale, or even for young adults without some maturity.

I’ve read this one a few times over the years and will keep for a future read again.

17 Kentucky Derby August 12, 2017 at 1:38 PM

Thank you Shoulda Coulda and I’m an Urban Spaceman. I was a little girl when that song came out. I liked the song, but I didn’t understand it. I was too young.

19 Cowellian August 12, 2017 at 4:28 PM

Several months ago, while they were still inexpensive, I bought some so-called ISO-certified sunglasses to watch the eclipse. Today, I got an email from Amazon stating the not all ISO sunglasses were actually certified.

So, I went to the American Astronomical Society’s website for more information. They do have a list of reputable vendors, but many are sold out, others want you to buy at least 25, and the rest are more expensive and will ship at the last minute. Oh well!

Anyways, here is the AAS site: eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/eyewear-viewers

20 Shasta Daisy August 12, 2017 at 6:01 PM

Cowellian, thanks for the link. I did buy mine from Amazon but I did not receive a letter. I bought mine about 8 weeks ago.

Yup! Mine are listed. American Paper Optics. Made right there in good old Tennessee.

Thanks for the reassurance.

Peace.

21 KAD August 12, 2017 at 6:03 PM

Cowellian – That is a shame and you are in a spot to see a total eclipse.

22 Dr. Jellyfinger August 12, 2017 at 6:06 PM

I once saw an interview with Donovan where he explained what a lyric in his song “Mellow Yellow” was all about.
The “Electrical banana Is gonna be a sudden craze” lyric was a reference to a certain battery powered device used for activities that Claycord’s diligent moderators would probably rather I did not mention…. so I won’t.

23 TIFOKCIS August 12, 2017 at 6:33 PM

Thank you for keeping that little tidbit a secret.

24 Cowellian August 12, 2017 at 6:41 PM

The good news is that Amazon is giving me a refund, and I don’t need to return the old glasses. The new ones are pricier than the original, but they should be delivered by August 18th.

27 Shoulda Coulda August 13, 2017 at 12:12 AM

@ Dr Jellyfinger

At the time everyone believed that Electical
Banana referred to smoking dried banana
peels to get high. Which was scientifically
disproven. At one time Donovan said it was
a reference to a member of The Lovin’
Spoonful band who was called Banana.
You can see that the stories and Donovan’s
interpretation has changed over the years.
Do you know how the band 10cc got it’s name.

28 Silva August 13, 2017 at 8:13 AM

What a great thread! Thanks for everything, Atticus Thraxx. I completely concur with Antler. Gorgeous, gorgeous shot. And Dr. Jellyfinger! Funny, I always got the milkman thing, even as the youngster I was in 1966. We had a milkman though, didn’t you? And Melanie with the Edwin Hawkins singers! Guess that one never gets old. Thanks again fellas! Oh Happy Day!

29 Silva August 13, 2017 at 8:18 AM

The “E lec trickle Ba NA na..” I did ponder a good bit. Never figured that one out back then and I’m still undecided.

30 Silva August 13, 2017 at 8:28 AM

Cowellian, sorry about that. I guess I better double check mine too. Do you know about letting the sun shine through a small nail hole, and watching the image that it makes on another flat surface, or the opposite (inner) side of a box? That’s how we did it in the schoolyard in the 60s. It also works very well.

31 TIFOKCIS August 13, 2017 at 8:28 AM

This is the second time, first time was my Wells Fargo atm card.

34 Shizzler August 13, 2017 at 11:17 AM

Anybody know what’s up with the development plans for the Treat/Clayton Rd. plaza that was going to host a Sprouts market (and they apparently backed out). Is it still going to be redeveloped or are the plans on hold?

35 apollo idol prudence August 13, 2017 at 11:41 AM

Shasta – Mike Hess Brewery, has a spot in Ocean Beach San Diego, never visited,

36 Concord Guy August 13, 2017 at 1:59 PM

To the driver of the white Lexus (your license plate starts with 7), you are a menace behind the wheel. You and I must be on the same work schedule, because I have had three occasions in as many weeks to encounter you as you speed down Mt. Diablo Street near the Concord BART station. You speed, roll through every stop sign and fail to yield to pedestrians, even in crosswalks. You then pull into the employee parking structure in the BofA complex at the corner of Mt. Diablo and Oak.

Shame on you.

37 Kirkwood August 13, 2017 at 3:11 PM

Dorothy – I saw “Wake Of The Red Witch” when I was about 10. I vividly remember scenes of the ship itself. Funny thing though, even though the film was black and white, the scenes in my head are color.

Silva – If you use a pin hole, a sharp image will be perhaps three thirty seconds of an inch and half as bright. If you use a larger aperture such as a 3-hole punch the image will be about the size of your aperture and much brighter. I just tried it with printer paper..

38 Silva August 13, 2017 at 7:31 PM

Kirkwood. A three hole punch? Cool!

39 Dr. Jellyfinger August 13, 2017 at 8:29 PM

@ 28 ~ Well….. I heard Donovan say that himself during an interview…. so… if it isn’t true, blame him not me!

Ya got me … what’s 10cc?

40 Kentucky Derby August 13, 2017 at 9:16 PM

I googled 10cc and would’ve been better off not knowing. Wow.

41 Original G August 13, 2017 at 9:20 PM

Yup did the pinhole eclipse viewer thing also in school.
These days older, wiser and lazier will watch it on TV or internet from the recliner.

TIFOKCIS By chance is Jury Duty on other side of the County? (Richmond) I did consider furnishing copies of various posted comments on Prop 47, Prop 57 and AB-109 …. etc.
“Contempt of Court ? ! ! ! ”
“I was just being honest.”

Concord Guy At work we use electric flatbed scooters and have effective way of dealing with people driving them in an unsafe manner. Wait at blind corner for speeder to run Stop sign and we toss an old broken CPR dummy in front of them. It’s amazing how fast they stop.

42 Dr. Jellyfinger August 14, 2017 at 7:46 AM

@ 41 ~ Not as bad as “Pearl Jam”.

43 Kentucky Derby August 14, 2017 at 9:19 AM

Add The Lovin’ Spoonful to the list. 10cc, Pearl Jam and The Lovin’ Spoonful all have the same “theme.” You can’t make this stuff up.

We need a music thread.

44 WC resident August 14, 2017 at 9:35 AM

@Concord Guy #37 – you should have reported the time this happens. I suspect Concord PD would then keep an eye on the street at that time.

Considering menace no the road – This tiny little old lady (nearly white hair with some gray) was behind me in line at Safeway this morning around 8:30. She was getting four 25oz cans of beer. I did not wait to see if and what she was driving.

51 KAD August 14, 2017 at 5:26 PM

I know someone here can explain why clothes that are black are smaller than clothes made with light colors. I like a top so I buy maybe 3 or 4 of the same size in different colors with one being black. The black one is smaller.

52 Silva August 14, 2017 at 7:11 PM

KAD, has that happened with a black garment more than once? I have picked out clothing items in several colors after trying on one of them, taken them home, trying the rest on, and had to take one back because it didn’t fit, but I don’t think it was ever black. I can sometimes then find another of the same color that does fit. I have often thought that that when pattern pieces are cut for mass production, they might cut a large stack of them, and they don’t all end up the identical size. I’ve also tried pants on that were larger on one side than the other. That never works.

53 Kentucky Derby August 14, 2017 at 7:43 PM

KAD – I don’t know if black clothes are made smaller, but I’ve read that clothes dyed black shrink more often because of the dye process. If it’s smaller when brand new, that’s odd. Maybe sizing up one size when buying black would help?

54 KAD August 14, 2017 at 8:21 PM

Silva – yes, it happens to my sweaters and t-shirts. That is too funny about the pants.
Kentucky Derby – I will remember the shrinking of black clothes when I shop next time.

55 Cowellian August 14, 2017 at 9:47 PM

Black dye?
Yeah, that’s why my clothes got so tight!

56 Jojo Potato August 15, 2017 at 11:09 AM

Reporting from the Haydn valley Yellowstone National Park. Elk carcass that had attracted a grizzly yesterday under observation. No bear in sight today. No one killed amongst the pedestrians wandering around in the road either. Hope you all are well.

57 Mary Fouts August 15, 2017 at 1:23 PM

Northern Flicker Woodpecker – Usually hear my first NFW between Oct 1-15, but heard the distinctive sonic-like call near my south PH backyard yesterday, and again this morning. No visual yet. 6 to 8 weeks early, wonder why? They usually stick around until sometime in March.

KAD – I also purchase multiple colors of tops when I find a style that works, particularly for casual short and long sleeve tops. I had a similar problem years ago when I bought Eddie Bauer items, cut and fit would vary between colors, although not specific to black. I chalked it up to the variance from Eddie Bauer contractors.

Jojo Potato – one of my neighbors is volunteering this summer in a national park in Idaho, don’t know which one. She recently retired, always something she wanted to do.
