Of course, the big topic this weekend is the heat wave. Please make sure the kids and pets are consuming enough water and stay hydrated yourself. It’s no laughing matter….stay safe, Claycordians…..

Dr. Steven Moon Fights Cancer With Research Fundraiser

Chiropractor Dr. Steven Moon is sponsoring a Cancer Research Fundraiser to take place on Saturday June 17 from 8 AM to 4 PM. This event will include FREE chiropractic adjustments, food and a raffle. Proceeds will benefit the Stanford Cancer Discovery Fund.

Dr. Steven Moon has served Clayton Valley in the medical field for over 45 years, first as a radiologic technologist and then for 35 years as a chiropractor. He was inspired to pursue alternative medicine as a career by the experience of seeing his father, a roofing contractor, get relief from chronic back pain as a result of a chiropractic adjustment. He was further motivated in this pursuit by observing the debilitating pain of many patients in his career as an X-ray technician.

Presently Dr. Moon provides services at Concord Chiropractic where his goal is to treat and help the whole person. He has successfully treated a wide range of conditions and injuries, including those resulting from automobile accidents, home injuries and chronic degenerative conditions. His practice has often provided relief to patients who had tried everything else. Besides treating symptoms, they also treat the cause so that the symptoms will not return. Concord Chiropractic makes use of the latest technologies, including the Brimhall Adjuster, Cold Laser therapy, and Non-Invasive Disc Rehabilitation.

This past April, Dr. Moon lost his father to cancer. This loss, in addition to other friends and family members whose lives have been claimed by this disease, have inspired Dr. Moon to support cancer research through this fundraiser. “Cancer has to go” says Dr. Moon.

More signs of summer June 17, 2017 at 10:24 AM

More signs of summer…

Hot temperatures…and people complaining that it is not 60 degrees and windy outside.

HS girls running away during the summer evenings with their tattooed biker boyfriends

Middle aged obese women flapping their jello arms at their 3 kids they cannot discipline

Nerdy kids with no friends playing PS4 all day

Over franchised summer movies

They have hour by hour reports on tempersture which was helpful during the cold weather last winter in protecting sensitive outdoor plants. Temperatures can vary by several degrers between Crystal Ranch which is at elevation greater than the end of Regency in Clayton, for example, or downtown Concord. They also have lots of other interesting information available.

KAD at #58 ~~~
That question about how often wires need to be replaced is a mystery to me! All I can say is that we have lived in this same house for 52 years, and they have never had to replace any of the lines beside us.
(No wait…. a REALLY long time ago, they did have to replace many wires all over town because the squirrels liked to eat the old type of insulation used on them. So they did update the type of wiring beside us at that time.)

Anyone else remember when there would be electric power outages because the wires invariably shorted out when it rained for the first time in the Fall? Seems as though there were LOTS more squirrels back then, perhaps because there were still quite a few walnut tree orchards (or remnants of them) not yet dead from black crown rot.

Kirkwood June 21, 2017 at 11:44 AM

Silva – The pic of Cosmo brings memories. Years ago I had a pair Birmans, the best cats I ever had. Beautiful and with very easygoing dispositions. Both went limp when you picked them up. Cosmo’s coat doesn’t look great in the pic. Birman coats, unlike their Persian/Himalayan cousins are self-maintainiing.
I see that Cosmo is now gone from the page – pointed cats in shelters are always quickly adopted.

Kirkwood June 21, 2017 at 11:54 AM

Antler – We use to get pole and transformer fires with the first rain in rural areas due to dust collecting on the insulators. I grew up in rural El Sobrante, each fall a power company boom truck would wash all the insulators along the roads.

Silva June 21, 2017 at 1:33 PM

Kirkwood, I agree, I bet Cosmo’s fur will look much nicer when he’s in his forever home. I’ve never heard of a Birman before, but I imagine they may be somewhat like the beloved seal point Siamese cats of my youth, and the lilac point we had way back when. We loved their big personalities, hyper intelligence, comical senses of humor, and the lilac point would completely melt into a purring puddle the moment anyone pet him. Even non-cat people tried to take him home with them. My mom and I always agreed that if were ever not overrun by mutts, we’d like another big seal point Siamese puss with crossed eyes. Funny thing, I’ve had by sheer happenstance a few obviously Siamese or Burmese or similar crossed with tabby, and they had/have (I have one now) their voices and mannerisms to a degree. I think gorgeous Cosmo is still available, but they rotate the animals in the column on the left.

Kentucky Derby June 21, 2017 at 1:46 PM

I think technology has gone too far. I guess I’m old school.

Kirkwood June 21, 2017 at 3:25 PM

Silva – Lots of information about Birmans online. Chui was a blue point and Mali was a seal. I would love to have a Birman now but decided that because of my age I needed an older cat so now have an 14 yr. old tortie from ARF.

Antler June 21, 2017 at 4:20 PM

Kirkwood, I enjoyed reading about the dust-on-insulator problems. But PG&E actually told us back then that the replacement was due to squirrel-nibbled wire coating.
But…. as an aside, I have a collection of the old-timey glass power line insulators in the blue to green color spectrum. My best find was at a Benicia Peddlers Fair many years ago…. called a “Mickey Mouse” because the two top side extensions look like Mickey’s ears. Last time I browsed at Henley’s Estate Sales and Antiques on Clayton Road, they had quite a few insulators. My collection is closed, but it’s still fun to look!

Kirkwood June 22, 2017 at 1:41 PM

Re: Drinking water, now called hydration. For the past 4 million years humans thrived on the water they frequently or infrequently found. In modern times many humans find they can’t be comfortable without access to water within seconds. What is happening to mankind?

Martinez residents are now getting call in surveys about local government
The points I noted were around the Shell Refinery and housing development
Two areas – 100 custom homes to be built off Alhambra and 100 homes on the golf course property. I get a lot of accurate information from that helps me with understanding what is going on in the city and county – also helps me pin point areas to research for voting or getting involved
So I’m going these topics come up in articles in the future – especially about development planning. It’s good to grow – just don’t want our beautiful lands destroyed
Only an FYI

I got my tickets, maybe there’s still space available. Taj Mahal, Berkeley, tomorrow night!😎

Silva June 23, 2017 at 10:54 AM

Kirkwood, Thank you too for the funny irony. I love old insulators too. I love most anything glass, the older the better. Those things are all so pretty! Your tortie is the same age as my middle cat, a grey with some white and beige underneath, but mostly grey with tiny stripes. Born with an unwanted litter in the house next door in Oakland. My son smuggled him in. He felt he had to save him, being he was the runt. I discovered him after a couple of weeks when the then 5 week old runt discovered his voice. I know what you mean about being older and wanting an older cat. I hope I don’t have any left to worry about when it’s time for me to leave.

Silva June 23, 2017 at 10:59 AM

Kentucky Derby, I have the most perfect base for a DIY Derby hat, if my number ever comes up to go! It’ll be so amazing. I’ve never worn it anywhere, though I wear hats all the time, but even on it’s own merits it’s a sight to behold. I’m practically ready!
