THE BLACK KNIGHT May 19, 2017 at 7:39 PM

Yesterday, as I was flipping through the television channels I came across a 1963, season 4 episode of Bonanza, the episode was titled “Hoss and the Leprechauns.” I have to say, it has been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a TV show as much as I did this episode. Dan Blocker was a funny man and left us too soon.

I am away from my hood! That is Walnut Creek! In Palmer Lake, Colorado!
It is all white with a blanket of snow! It is unusual they say for a late bunch
of snow not to mention temps in the 20’s! Colorado folk are much more cordial and friendly! No indifferent type of attitudes! I still love the Claycord
area anyway! We have it made and before long they (Colorado) will have every scrap of land developed too! So Friday night here is not the same! It is in bed early because there is more stuff to do here out in the country!! So good night!

They’re quite large.

Came across this while doing research for process control at work.. Good ole Bernoulli’s Principle and solar chimney or stack effect minus all the math.

WC resident May 19, 2017 at 10:17 PM

@Original #8 – the puzzle is when you compress a gas (or anything) it heats up so the part at 1:07 with “the bottle neck compresses and cools the air” does not make sense.

The other part that does not make sense is the assumption that there is a breeze available and blowing in the right direction.

The bottles will serve to slight heat up the air and to increase the speed of flow. A fraction of an inch on the outlet side of the bottle the air expands, which cools it back to what it was before it entered the bottle and so you think it’s been cooled.

The second link is entirely unrelated to the first. It talks about two things. 1) The stack principal is that hot air rises. That’s basic physics (which is a part of science). 2) The link talks about Bernoulli’s principle but I believe it’s being misapplied here and it’s not Bernoulli’s principle at work that causes a vent to pull air out of a building. It’s an area of strongly held and conflicting beliefs. If you want to start a fight in a room of physicists talk about how the Bernoulli equation explains the flow over an airfoil.

Please put back the shopping cart where you found and STOP dumping them. You are too lazy to get your own folding cart stroller. it only $23. This is costing cart collector. A LOT OF MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!

What’s with all the preaching today?

anon May 20, 2017 at 10:26 AM

I picked my first zucchini, yellow crookneck and yellow squash this morning. I can’t wait for a real ripe tomato.

Mary Fouts May 20, 2017 at 3:33 PM

California produce: The first California stone fruit is showing up in markets, and talk about great! Current CA peaches are the best I’ve eaten in many years. CA romaine lettuce, radishes, and first of the sweet corn crop have also been very good.

My gardens: My large paddle cactis are blooming flowers now. I planted basil from seed this spring instead of buying plants. It has germinated and is growing well, although took much longer to germinate than anticipated.
Artichokes delicious. Onions and garlic should be bumper crops. Roses and other flowers glorious. Love the many bachelor button flowers I planted with seed in early spring, they are fresh smelling and last a long time.

Strawberries are delicious, apples setting on nicely. Sour and bing cherry trees will have very little fruit due to rains, but healthy and lush foliage. Sweet almond tree got fungus from rain, pruned it severely and it is coming back nicely. Although no almonds this year.

Silva May 20, 2017 at 4:20 PM

Sir Atticus Thraxx, lovely list, thank you! I tried to find that charging baby elephant on youtube, cause Ijust know it made the cutest little miniature baby trumpeting noise. SO CUTE!!! Great stuff. I’d have never guessed the city.

Original G May 20, 2017 at 4:53 PM

@WC resident Compression of gases usually involves mechanical energy to do work of compressing into a usually closed system generating heat. Believe in this case since there is no containment and little pressure it might just work. May for the heck of it try it to cool our small greenhouse.

Should have explained better, second link provided as info on creation of air flow. Trombe roof structure creates airflow due to hot air wanting to rise. Thinking a Trombe roof structure could do double duty heating in winter and cooling in summer. That’s for later, now it’s how to come up with monogrammed zucchini and tomatoes in different shapes.
Second childhood, larger allowance and still NO supervision.

We have a half bath with window about 5 above the floor. Replaced original half window screen with one across full window opening. In evening remove both window panels and put a 20″ box fan which just fits in the opening blowing out. Open windows at other end of the house a few inches and let fan run all night, closing the house back up in the morning. All about removing latent heat in house’s building materials. So far haven’t needed to run the AC this year. Right now it’s 75 in the house and 94 outside.

For Safety have drilled Aluminum window frames and put 2 screws in top widow track so window has to be all the way open to lift the moveable window panel out. Have 1/4″ thick 2″ wide wood strip to put in window track to stop partially opened window. From outside the window can’t be opened further and can’t be lifted out of the frame track.

Anonymous May 21, 2017 at 8:42 AM

Yesterday morning my crappy I phone 7 quit. Just quit . Went to the Fix my mac place downtown. Sign said they open at 11am. When I gave up at 1210 there were 9 other customers that had come and left. No idea if they ever opened.

I went to a little place on Clayton Rd, and they fixed me right up with a new battery, which seems to be an I -7 problem.

Jojo Potato May 21, 2017 at 8:51 AM

@Shasta – we’re going to be in eastern Oregon along with a group of eclipse junkies. Should be a fun campout too.

We have a few fruit trees, an apricot, pluot and plum tree. This year there is no fruit on the apricot or plum tree and a little on the pluot. I thought it was all the rain we got that made the blossoms fall. But my husband spoke to a beekeeper and they said it was the lack of bees. We have a lavendar plant and just planted sage and rosemary. Hopefully, that will encourage and help the bees (and not the nasty wasp/yellow jacket type insects).

Justifiable Languor May 21, 2017 at 10:32 AM

Just for the record. The larger scary looking slow moving orange wasps are fairly benign. We have them in our garden and have never been stung. On the other hand, the yellow jackets are very aggressive.

Shasta Daisy May 21, 2017 at 10:36 AM

RedLegs May 22, 2017 at 2:04 PM

Does anyone know when the local trails/fire trails will be cleaned up and cleared? The rains have left them over grown to the point you cannot see or walk on them without fear of collecting ticks Just curious.

Shasta Daisy May 22, 2017 at 3:02 PM

@RedLegs, they have already started to clear some of the trails.
I know what you mean about ticks, picked up a couple myself.
Hopefully, your favorite trails will be cleared soon.
Wildflowers (weeds, to some) have been in abundance this year.

Weather: Wild temp swing of 50.8 degrees (so far) in south PH today. High of 103.1 at 3:50 PM, low of 52.3 at 6:13 PM.

Homemade sourdough pizza for dinner tonight, cheese-stuffed crust and garden basil and oregano.

A neighborhood home is having a new roof put on today. Can’t imagine nailing shingles in 100 degree weather, that’s work!

Noticed on Friday that ¼ Pounder on Clayton Rd. is “Under New Management”. Anyone know if the owner sold it or any details? I haven’t eaten there in years and was sorry to see that Fritz’s Meats closed after it was sold to the same person that later bought the ¼ Pounder restaurant.

Blue Bird May 22, 2017 at 6:11 PM

Why will Willow Pass Road be closed on Saturday morning between 4 am and Noon? I am hoping it is to scrape the road and re pave. I know, wishful thinking will get me nowhere.

Playland At The Beach

Lizzie May 22, 2017 at 7:44 PM

i remember playland at the beach and also the sutro baths. I remember going to playland and my uncle going to the baths. He was kinda strange back then. Way way back then. My Aunt or Uncle (maybe both) lived in an apartment complex right across from Ocean Beach. And on Sunday’s we would go there to visit.
So many memories…..

Atticus Thraxx May 22, 2017 at 8:01 PM

Blue Bird there’s going to be a marathon from downtown, through part of CNWS and back to downtown. I guess it’s one of those deals where people run even though no one is chasing them. And get this…it costs $90. Silly white people.

Concord Guy May 22, 2017 at 9:19 PM

To the guy in the Audi who abruptly changed lanes on Gateway in Concord on Mother’s Day at about 5:30 PM, causing me to take evasive action. Thank you so much for rolling down your passenger window at the red light and profusely apologizing to me. I just said “yeah” and rolled up my window (adrenaline in hyperdrive). What I should have said was “thank you for the apology…peace”.

You’re a good dude. We all make driving errors. Thanks for the apology, which I accept.

Aspirin May 23, 2017 at 8:50 AM

Re: Lizzie #42: SF was a much different city then. Now it is way too crowded, too expensive, and choked with traffic. The museums, the Zoo, the Aquarium once were free. Now one must mortgage the house to take a family of four anywhere.

Sutros had a large ice skating rink where I used to skate. Much of the facility was closed but the rink and a museum remained.

The big fire finished Sutros forever.

Laughing Sal is still around somewhere. On a quiet night I can still hear her, and sometimes I can hear the rumble of the Big Dipper.

Justifiable Languor May 23, 2017 at 10:03 AM

I’m on the look out at ¼ Pounder too. Decades ago this chain as well as Nations offered the best burgers in town. This place got kind of divey after awhile.

Does any one remember the hamburger bar at the head of Dekinger and Treat where it meets at Clayton?

Jojo Potato May 23, 2017 at 11:37 AM

@Asprin – Playland, not at the beach, in El Cerrito has three Sals. One only comes out at Halloween. Sounds like a very fun place.

Good News

A 68-year-old Wisconsin man who falsely claimed to be a Navy SEAL wounded four times in Vietnam has been sentenced to four years in prison for theft and faking paperwork.

U.S. prosecutors say Kenneth E. Jozwiak produced fake discharge paperwork in 2014 to get U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs pension benefits intended for low-income wartime veterans.

In 2014, Jozwiak submitted a discharge certificate that claimed he served as a Navy SEAL from 1965 to 1968 and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

@ Salivator #58 ~ Cool drool… I enjoyed that.
Here is my rant:
Doctor Bitfriskie dropped in last night… and I told her I’d had an epiphany!
I figured out that “Drop in Intimacy” (as I had referred to her drop in visits for foolin around) actually meant quite the opposite!
She said I was making great progress over my M&MS (meanings & misunderstandings syndrome) and now it’s time to work on my immaturity…
“My” immaturity? ….. I’m not immature… SHE is immature! anyway… no more poopie humor from me …or pointless arguments with people who are so narrow minded and pig headed that they can’t see past the end of their own nose to even consider another person’s point of view.
So… not much more to say.
I guess I’ll go check out the Politics Column.

Roger Moore died? Aww crap… he was Beau Maverick… Jack Kelly (Bart Maverick) just died awhile back too…. and James Garner (Bret Maverick) left us in 2014. I know they snuck Robert Colbert in as a another brother “Brent” for 2 piddly episodes too…. so I guess, technically… he is the last Maverick… unless Mel Gibson counts, but I don’t think he does because he was just in a movie and played Bret and there shouldn’t be two Bret’s anyway. So…. I hope Robert Colbert has his affairs in order… the last Maverick…. and no, Tom Cruise does not count.

Dr. Jellyfinger May 25, 2017 at 10:16 PM

Looks like I’m the only guy on “Whatever” today!
It’s like being the only passenger on a jet! …… So… I guess I might as well run up and down the aisle!

Anyway, today I see that Dr. Rollin Brownstane & Dr. Justin Pujols began their partnership. I don’t blame R.B. for dropping me for Pujols… he was offered a fancy office and Pujols has a real diploma… friggin showoff!
but I’m over it… and ready to move on when I see their photo ad… they stole MY idea!
The header say’s “Painless Proctology”
And there they are wearing their white Doctor garb, big smiles & both giving the “two thumbs up”
Geez! Dr. Pujols makes me so angry I could scream!!!
He is my Nemesis… my Arch Rival… the D-Con to my Door Mouse …. the Ham Sandwich to my Cass Elliott!
I hate him!

Dr. Jellyfinger May 25, 2017 at 11:33 PM

I’m mellowing out with some cool 60’s tunes…. anger is almost gone.
