I’ve never considered deafness a handicap. I’m deaf, while theaters using captioning would be nice, I can imagine how terrible (sarcasm intended) it would be for hearing people. There was a theater in Berkeley that used captioning. Now, I just wait until the movie is on Netflix.

I don’t want it all, I would like to be treated with courtesy. Please look at me when talking. Please don’t go rushing past me mumbling a question. Please do not storm off when I ask you to repeat your question. Simple, common courtesy.

If you should ever become handicapped Tothetop, I hope you remember what you posted

Silva April 15, 2017 at 10:52 AM

I was recently disappointed on a long flight with a surprisingly decent in-flight movie selection that there were NO captions on anything. I tried removing my spongy hearing protective earplugs to put in the earbud thingies they provided and had to turn up the volume really high to overcome the jet noise, and it was just too loud for me, so I didn’t watch any of the good movies. I already have enough tinnitus! And I did think about hearing impaired people who are completely excluded from that service.

WhoDat? April 15, 2017 at 5:58 PM

Anyone else think the Asian doctor who got clobbered by airlines and airport security could have avoided all the hassle by just following the terms of his ticket and leaving the plane when asked? (It’s in the fine print.) He’s mostly responsible for his injuries and humiliation, but his lawyers have a slam dunk of a lawsuit because people no longer hold accountable those who feel they are special, or above the law. I saw the video and I wanted to get in a few shots on that damned whiner! Take the money if they bump you and find another way home. Then again, he’s going to hit the jackpot with the lawsuit, so maybe he knew what he was doing. Seven figures might be worth a couple of teeth, a broken nose, and a concussion.

anon April 15, 2017 at 6:42 PM

I agree. People used to practice something called “passive resistance.” You just go limp when approached like they approached him. The theory is if your relaxed and limp, not offering any resistance, you are much heavier and more difficult to move. Since it wasn’t a “fair” fight, he was physically smaller and outnumbered, I can’t imagine why he was trying to resist. You’re bound to get hurt in a situation like that. But, now he will get a nice compensation for his trouble. Personally, I’d have rather agreeably gotten another flight.

Turns out is was a United carrier called Republic airlines
( ) and it’s not United you should be pissed at, it’s the friggin’ cops ( Chicago Department of Aviation ) who thumped the little dweeb for no good reason. They will be burned as well they should be. Homey gettin’ paid.

Gary April 15, 2017 at 9:00 PM

# 19 and 20 WAKE UP.The airlines have sticking it to us for a long time.Sounds like the two of you will gladly pay money for an extra cup of water. “Passive Resistance” WTF.This wasn’t some guy getting kicked out of a bar by some numbnut bouncer.

WhoDat? April 15, 2017 at 9:53 PM

I’m fully awake and realize that the airlines hold all the cards, but until laws are changed, when you get selected to be bumped, go in peace and take the compensation offered. Resisting and fighting will only make it worse for you (unless you desire to be manhandled and mistreated). I’ve been flying commercial since 1962, so I’ve seen the industry change over the years. I’d love for those making a reservation and then not showing up to be charged double for creating the double-booking approach the airlines need to fill planes. Now, unless you’re a communist I assume you want the companies to make money for the investors so they can stay in business.

Silva April 15, 2017 at 10:19 PM

“Asian doctor” cold-cocked and dragged off plane by goon squad. Glad to hear that made someone feel all warm and fuzzy. Selected randomly by a computer? I spose it could just as easily been your white grandmother as someone’s Chinese grandpa.

KAD April 15, 2017 at 11:53 PM

The airline should have raised the offer to some amount that would have enticed someone to give up their seat once they realized the man was not going to go peacefully. Would have saved them a lot of problems and money in the long run.

Julie April 16, 2017 at 1:46 AM

Gentleman on plane had left plane when first asked to take another flight. For some reason he changed his mind and came back on plane refusing to go through security again. It was security who pulled him off plane. The doctor also trades sexual favors for prescription drugs. But of course your newspapers won’t tell you the whole truth or what kind of man he is. I love how everyone has opinions on false information.

Julie April 16, 2017 at 1:48 AM

FYI was not about race and I don’t work for the airlines. Just have friends in the know.

Lambie April 16, 2017 at 8:15 AM

Why do the airlines need to overbook? Hasn’t the seat already been paid for? If you don’t show up for your flight, don’t you loose your money?

Lambie April 16, 2017 at 8:32 AM

I was at a parking garage recently and there were an inordinate amount of cars taking up two spaces. I found this very frustrating. One of the problems is the size of the parking spaces. They think they will make more money by creating more spaces, but since the spaces are so small people feel the need to take two spaces. Even when someone does park in one spot, but they don’t park perfectly, it makes the available space seem too small, so I look for another spot. The most annoying thing is when you return to your car and someone parked so close to your car that you can’t even open your car door. Then you have to get in using the passenger door. Enough ranting?

Dr. Jellyfinger April 16, 2017 at 8:44 AM

Don’t blame Ol’ Doc Dao… an Asian guy in Chicago?
He was obviously disoriented.

Silva April 16, 2017 at 9:55 AM

Airlines overbook because it is not in their best interest to go anywhere EVER with empty seats. It is a very longstanding practice. Back in my early days in the industry they really had little idea how many ticketed passengers they had on any given flight. Nowadays they have a much better idea about how many extra seats they’ve sold than in the past, but people with reservations and even tickets are still not going to show up to fly. It is often a very tricky problem for the front line workers to sort out, and that is when they will often come on board and begin offering financial compensation to people if they will deboard and be re accommodated somehow. There are times when the plane is full with people who have mostly paid for their “discounted”: tickets well in advance, and here come last minute passengers who will pay full fare, and they will absolutely do whatever they can to accommodate them at the much higher price. The story with this debacle was that they had to accommodate a flight crew at the last minute. Now we are talking really high stakes, without a flight crew somewhere, trouble on a whole nother scale is brewing. The downline repercussions to a flight on the tarmac without a crew can be staggering. Electronic ticketing has all but eliminated having any document in your hand with the fine print on it mentioned by WhoDat? in his gleeful post at #19, but no one ever read that fine print anyway, even with 20/10 vision in both eyes. People assume they have a contract for service, and don’t expect to have to relinquish their seat and future plans when demanded “at random” to do so. I betcha Dr. Dao would rather have not ended up with a concussion, a broken nose, broken teeth and unable to fulfill duties and go about his life for any “jackpot”.

Silva April 16, 2017 at 10:38 AM

Your grandfather, grandmother, husband, wife, son, daughter, etc.,etc., may benefit from the trouble and pain Dr. Dao now has to live through.

Silva April 16, 2017 at 12:30 PM

Julie, There are LOTS of newspaper/internet articles about Dr. Dao’s reportedly not unblemished past, though his past has zilch to do with him being roughed up and dragged off the plane by goons. I read about it on the Daily Mail last Wednesday. And he was already cleared through TSA screening, despite what your friends in the know say.

Silva April 16, 2017 at 2:58 PM

Oh, just one more thing, I promise; when you take the offer of $$ compensation and “a new flight”, you could be routed through Timbuktu on your way to your destination. If you think the next nonstop flight has an empty seat open and just waiting for you, it does not.

WC resident April 16, 2017 at 3:46 PM

@Silva, one solution to overbooking is 1) Your credit card is charged the moment you reserve the seat. You are paying for the reservation. 2) If you need to cancel the airline will put the seat on a secondary market. You can sell the seat for whatever you want. If you sell a $100 seat for $80 then the airline will give you $80 back minus a handling fee. If you sell it for $120 then you get $120 minus a handling fee. If you can’t sell the ticket then you get nothing.

Once you own a reservation you can also list the price that you would be willing to sell the seat for. Once all seats are sold then the airline, or anyone, who needs a seat can go to the secondary market and make an offer which will be transmitted to all seat holders with a listed price at or below your offer. Anyone can sell their seat for any price that they desire.

As the airline manages the secondary market they could also make offers to people after an aircraft is boarded. In this case United needed four seats and it was the last flight of the day. I’m certain that among an aircraft load of people they could have found four people willing to either stay overnight and flown out the next morning or willing to take a limo home (the destination airport was a five hour car ride) home that night if you also have them $1000 extra cash.

Atticus Thraxx April 16, 2017 at 6:06 PM

Whatever Dr. Dao gets ultimately he has to live with the knowledge he screams like a girl when he get’s a little roughed up and everyone on the planet saw it. Even for millions, I’d rather have my dignity.

Silva April 16, 2017 at 7:00 PM

WC resident, Interesting idea. Yes, they sure should have offered more incentive for someone to voluntarily deplane! It would have been well worth the cost.

Ewing 23 April 16, 2017 at 8:33 PM

Mr. Mayor of Claycord,

Any chance that you can get and post dash-cam video from the Concord Police Department of the couple hundred Clayton Valley Charter High School students (and presumably others) that showed up on Beechwood Drive in Dana Estates on Friday night to attend a party. They were a rude and disrespectful bunch, leaving garbage in the streets and the yards of neighbors, and damaging, vandalizing, and destroying the property of some of those that live in the neighborhood. The police came out several times over a period of several hours trying to disperse the crowd of heathens. Finally, near ten o’clock a couple police cars turned on sirens and drove at a snails pace down the street attempting to herd the band of marauding teens out of the neighborhood. While it quieted down significantly after that, it wasn’t totally over with until the next morning.

This was likely another example of teens using social media gone wrong, and the public and a neighborhood paying the price, because of parents not knowing where their kids are and what they are doing. This is why minors shouldn’t be using social media sites like Facebook, Snapchat, and others.

Dr. Jellyfinger April 16, 2017 at 10:59 PM

@ 37 ~ Not me !
A couple million bucks would pay for much more dignity than I need.

Antler April 17, 2017 at 11:07 AM

My husband is a retired commercial airline captain (two airlines, because the first was Pan American), and another immediate family has over 29 years as cabin crew with a major commercial airline.

A bit more input:
Before the Reagan administration chose to deregulate the airlines, NONE of the airlines overbooked. (How many remember those days when each company owned its own food service, aircraft interior cleaning, and baggage handling services and took pride in them?)

Even more importantly, back then even the crew-scheduling and flight operations were not yet computerized.
Enter computers. Enter jet fuel shortages. Enter the period during which one major airline decided to “reservation bomb” another one by making fake reservations causing it to look online (or by phone) as though the other
airline’s flights were full. Add the resulting paranoia (especially of business flyers) who HAD to be somewhere, so they started booking seats on more than one flight for the same trip (with one or several airlines), would take the first one…. but would not bother to cancel the others.

Commercial airlines already have enough trouble managing the systemwide problem of weather disruptions (or airplanes unexpectedly out-of-service, or crew members “timed out” on legal number of consecutive hours of duty, or … WHATEVER). They pay exorbitant “gate fees” for each airplane. Bottom line is the bottom line: they really NEED every airplane to be full, if at all possible!

On top of the above, then add in the heightened security anxiety since the September 11, 2001, attack. So now there are several levels of concerns, regulations, and factors always in play, including the fact that if a crew member officially asks you to de-plane, you have already agreed back when you bought the ticket (in the fine print you never read) to COMPLY. No passenger… for ANY reason… has the right to hold an entire flight and all its paying passengers, each with his own scheduling/connections at stake, in a figurative hostage situation!!!

Be aware that UAL (in this particular case) had asked for volunteers to deplane in return for $800, plus re-scheduling, plus a room and meals if necessary, etc….. the usual incentives. Passengers were holding out for $1,600. Flight was by then threatened with losing its take-off slot (no joke at its main hub at Chicago’s O’Hare International). UAL negotiated no further, chose four passengers at random for removal, and had a crew member make the request. One passenger…. (still hoping for more money? maybe thinking ahead to making a complaint and getting a settlement?)… decided to go rogue. Advised that Security would be called, he only became more vocally aggressive. From that point one, anything ANYTHING that happened was legally completely ON THE PASSENGER! The man was beyond being an idiot when HE decided to physically resist Airport Security. From the time he had chosen not to comply with the airline’s request to deplane, he started throwing his tantrum under FEDERAL law. Brought it on himself.

As an aside, it is to your advantage to check in for your flight online within 24
hours of scheduled departure, and then STILL plan to get to the terminal at least 2 hours early so as to check in yourself and your luggage. Your reservations desk check-in time will be a factor if the flight happens to be overbooked!

Original G April 17, 2017 at 12:15 PM

Decided well over over a decade ago, because of numerous reports back then of how employees were treated, to never again set foot in Walmart. Am wondering if this turkey trespass incident was used as a flimsy day glow excuse for age discrimination?

Regardless this is another example of shallow thinking persons given more authority than their intellect can handle causing negative press and public relations nightmares for their employers due to knee jerk decisions.

“An 88-year-old Wisconsin Walmart greeter was fired after a wild turkey wandered into the store.”
“Tallinger, who had worked as a greeter at the store for eight years, received notice that he had been fired last week.

Walmart supervisors told him he should have alerted a manager to the bird’s presence, he said. ‘He never saw a book of rules that said if a wild turkey comes in here you better run and get management,’ his wife Janet told WISN.”

Silva April 17, 2017 at 12:26 PM

Ooo, Antler! Thanks for setting me straight. All so very true. And I do remember pre Ronald Reagan deregulation, and the absolute madness that ensued. Those were the days.

Dr. Dao did squeal like a little girl. But I’m pretty sure even as a little girl I wouldn’t have done that. Maybe he squealed like a little boy. 😉

Off Barbrady April 17, 2017 at 12:55 PM

United offered $800 and no one took it. Well how about offering more? I know
that somewhere in the fine print it says that can kick you off ( presumably before the flight takes off ) but once I’m in the seat I think we might have a problem.

Those airport security guy ( not cops) let United put them in the position of enforcing a civil contract. Real cops don’t lay hands on people over civil disputes. What they should have done was tell the Captain ,”If you want him arrested ,you make a citizens arrest and we will call real cops to take custody of him.”One call from the Captain to his union would have stopped the foolishness right away.

Yeah the doctor had some serious problems in the past but so what?

Your correspondent was in Sea Tac when Alaska Air had an overbooking issue. They just kept raising the bid until several of us took it. Civilized I thought.

Original G April 17, 2017 at 1:24 PM

Antler’s post beings to mind what I refer to as a gross lack of upper management critical thinking and competency in continuous training of and retaining competent employees.

Employees working for United should have thought thru their actions as to possible negative repercussions for their company.
Agreed they were under pressure to get the flight in the air that said there should have been double the number of passengers selected instead of just the four, number of seats needed. Not having that option backed those employees into a corner forcing them to escalate the situation into an US vs THEM authority confrontation. For United employees to allow the situation to escalate into a forcible extraction, in view of persons able to record video and upload to social media even before they’d dragged the Doctor off the plane, will be talked of in college business classes for decades.

As soon as man identified himself as a Doctor needing to see patients the next morning in his home town United employees should have moved on to next name on their list of eight possibilities for “re-accommodation”.

Far to many companies have thru self absorbed incompetent profit driven management, insulated from the real world by eager sycophants and internal bean counter reports, have come to regard customers as persons who must be tolerated rather than striving for constant improvement in customer relations and customer satisfaction.

Other companies have attempting to be “hip” for lack of a better term with knee jerk changes to corporate policy in an attempt to conform to political winds of the moment. Target and Starbucks to name two suffered in revenue for their missteps as long term United probably will too.

Too many in upper management of companies have forgotten.
“Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:31

Profits will happen if management focus is on customer and employee satisfaction.

Atticus Thraxx April 17, 2017 at 5:07 PM

They had plenty of options but as they despise their customer base as much as we’ve come to despise them, it never occurred to them to buy tickets for the flight staff who needed to get to the next city, on another airline. As a former share holder of UAL, it makes me grin. Glad I sold in 2015 at 73, though it looks like some folks saw a bargain and bought this week, they’re back up over 70 at close today.

Lizzie April 17, 2017 at 5:28 PM

Anyone know of a good cleaning company? I have been thinking about getting s service for awhile, but need some good solid recommendations.

Officer Barbrady April 17, 2017 at 5:42 PM

Just read an article on the internet ( so it must be true) that made the case that they can remove a passenger if they are overbooked, but they were not overbooked . Writer said the contract we agree to does not allow the airline to remove a passenger to accommodate a flight crew.

I have no idea what the regs are or if the writer knows what he is talking about. For all I know the author could be in J ward. Hopefully someone smarter then me , like brother Thraxx knows.

Dr. Jellyfinger, I have my doubts about the study talked about in the link at @64, which doesn’t work anymore. I can’t find it in any other publication I’ve ever heard of either. I’m with you that the alternatives to bloody red meat more than once or twice a week, three times max, suck.

KAD, thank you for sharing your sore throat remedy. I’m glad you were able to nip it in the bud, and are feeling better.

Our family of 5 ate red for dinner every night for 20 years. During my sister’s UC Berkeley indoctrination she turned vegan. 10 years of looking like warmed over death my sister was given an option by her doctor. Either eat animal protein or die. 40 years of never eating red meat my sister got cancer.

Moral of the story: the lone non-red-meat eater in the family gets caner.

Some guy just drove into a tree on Landana and Larkspur. He said he’s okay so I continued on.
