whatever

Happy Friday to all the wonderful citizens in the City of Claycord.

This is a post with no subject, you can talk about whatever you want. If breaking news happens (such a shooting, earthquake, etc.), or you hear about something newsworthy, feel free to post it here.

Ah yes!
The Troubles – a time I remember well (unfortunately).
Naturally, I wanted to say FN (also FAL, SLR, depending on your nomenclature), but the rear sight just wasn’t right – way too big and Thompson-ish.
On closer inspection, it has to be an AR-180 / AR-18.
The hinge in the folding stock’s a dead giveaway. Probably bought on the US civilian market and sneaked into the republic, then north.
Used to be a big fan (always wanted one) about 1970, not so much in hindsight.
Excellent quiz, Atticus! Thank you!

Finished another of my mom’s old books. All This and Heaven Too by Rachel Field, 1938. It was also, partially, made into a movie in 1940. The movie seems to only deal with the first half of the book. What was interesting was that while it reads as a fiction it is actually a semi biography. Considering the time it was written, it is very readable. I’ll recommend it to those who are interested in a true crime story that is also two love stories.

12 Atticus Thraxx January 7, 2017 at 7:59 AM

Ancient One I think it should be you giving these quizzes. You are correct. AR-18/180. Need to see a better resolution picture to tell between the two. Both got into Provo hands.

Do you remember this little ditty from the PIRA?

And it’s down Along the Falls Road, that’s where I long to be,
Lying in the dark with a Provo company,
A comrade on my left and another on my right
And a clip of ammunition for my little Armalite.

I was stopped by a soldier, said he, You are a swine,
He hit me with his rifle and he kicked me in the groin,
I begged and I pleaded, sure me manners were polite
But all the time I’m thinking of me little Armalite.

And it’s down in The bogside that’s where I long to be,
Lying in the dark with a Provo company,
A comrade on my left and another on my right
And a clip of ammunition for my little Armalite.

Sure a brave RUC man came marching up into our street
Six hundred British soldiers he had lined up at his feet
“Come out, ye cowardly Fenians”, said he, “come out and fight”.
But he cried, “I’m only joking”, when he heard the Armalite.

Sure it’s down in Kilwilkie, that’s where I long to be,
Lying in the dark with a Provo company,
A comrade on my left and another on my right
And a clip of ammunition for my little Armalite.

Sure, the army came to visit me, ’twas in the early hours,
With Saladins and Saracens and Ferret armoured cars
They thought they had me cornered, but I gave them all a fright
With the armour piercing bullets of my little Armalite.

And it’s down in the New lodge that’s where I long to be,
Lying in the dark with a Provo company,
A comrade on me left and another on me right
And a clip of ammunition for my little Armalite.

When Tuzo came to Belfast, he said, The battle’s won,[a]
Said General Ford, We’re winning sir, we have them on the run.
But corporals and privates on patrol at night,
Said, Send for reinforcements, it’s the bloody Armalite.

And it’s down in Crossmaglen, that’s where I long to be,
Lying in the dark with a Provo company,
A comrade on me left and another on me right
And a clip of ammunition for my little Armalite.

A NEW GAME!
When parking in large lots, look at car registration tags and see who can find the most expired one. So far, I’ve seen March 2016, but I bet there’s a deadbeat or two out there with a 2015 tag. Lost state revenues. Responsible citizens pay the accursed fee because a few cents of every dollar might actually go to maintaining our roads.

If we already don’t have enough to worry about, the Concord City now tells us (see City News, page 7, winter/spring 2017) we are responsible for repairs and liability of the sidewalks if front out house–so check your sidewalks to make sure they are in compliance with City Code–does anyone know if your home owners policy covers the liability if someone is injured as a result of a fall because of poor sidewalks?

16 Doh January 7, 2017 at 10:37 AM

Bob, can you provide a link? I can’t find it on the city’s website. More than 10 years ago Concord repaired the sidewalks on my street the were askew due to tree roots. They also took down and replaced the offending trees.

A young polar bear came into his den and asked his mother “Mommy, am I a real polar bear?” “Of course you are” his mother replied. The young polar bear asked his father. “Dad, am I a real polar bear?” “Yes, you are a real polar bear” A week passed and the young polar bear asked his parents “Are grandma and grandpa real polar bears?” “Yes” said his parents. Another week passed and the young polar bear asked his parents “Are all my relatives real polar bears?” “Yes, they are all real polar bears” said his parents. “Why do you ask?” “Because,” said the young polar bear, “I’m f***ng freezing!”

Hi DoH–the web site is http://www.ConcordReg.org

It was in the Concord City News & Activities–Winter/Spring 2017 edition.

Can you imagine the law suit if someone is seriously injured because of a faulty sidewalk in front of your house–

19 Ancient Mariner January 7, 2017 at 12:24 PM

No, never heard the poem (song?), Atticus. Thank you for posting it.
My revolutionary poetic tastes run a bit older, say back to Behan (going from memory, here – excuse any mistakes):

“We’re off to Dublin in the green, in the green
Where helmets glisten in the sun
Where the bayonets flash and the rifles crash
To the echo of a Thompson gun”

20 Jojo Potato January 7, 2017 at 1:04 PM

@Doh – it looks like that 2017 city news issue is not posted yet. Putting the sidewalk repair on the residents has been tried in nearby cities with bad results. Oakland and SF both did it and then had to take it back. My Oakland house the city planted a tree and then years later it wrecked the side walk and then after a bunch of lawsuits the city took back responsibility and started fixing the sidewalks. The funny part was that the tree the city initially planted is now banned. Not really funny, just government stupidity.

21 KAD January 7, 2017 at 2:23 PM

Re bad sidewalks – If the City says the homeowner is responsible then if there is a danger spot, can we then put caution tape up and deny access to people wanting to use the sidewalk? I would say yes. What say you?

22 Mary Fouts January 7, 2017 at 3:17 PM

Re: Sidewalks – PH considers sidewalk maintenance the responsibility of the property owner per state law that states responsibility rests with the property owner. From the city’s website:

“Sidewalk Repair
Property Owners are Responsible for Sidewalks in the City of Pleasant Hill
Residents should be aware that they are responsible for repairing or reconstructing sidewalks adjacent to their property if the sidewalk becomes cracked or liable thereby creating a tripping hazard.

Like most cities, the City of Pleasant Hill follows California Streets and Highways Code 5600 and the City’s Municipal Code 7.25 Sidewalk Maintenance regarding the repair, maintenance and construction of public sidewalks. Under state law, maintenance of the sidewalk is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner, even though the sidewalk may be in the City’s right-of-way.”

Re: homeowners insurance covering sidewalk slip and fall liability: The answer is “it depends”. If a homeowner is deemed liable for an accident on his/her property due to the homeowner’s negligence, and the homeowner’s negligence was a cause of the accident, the policy’s liability insurance coverage would kick in. I’m not aware of any sidewalk exclusions by current insurers, but always best to check your specific policy.

Also, if sidewalks are in such a state of disrepair so as to cause immediate life safety issues, and the insurer is made aware of the issues, that could trigger nonrenewal of the policy if repairs are not made by the property owner.

23 Atticus Thraxx January 7, 2017 at 3:44 PM

Short stroke piston. Better then the gas impingement deal for the AR-15. Cleaner and cooler. Kinda the best of the AR and AK designs rolled into one. I’m not sure why they didn’t get more popular and as far as I know never adopted as a battle rifle for any country. Go figure. Made alot of widows.

24 Is This Thing On? January 7, 2017 at 3:54 PM

If I’m responsible for maintaining the sidewalk in front of my house, then that sidewalk is MINE! I can do what I want with it, including putting in a toll booth. If it remains city property, then that’s whose responsible for keeping it safe. The scum bags on the city council are always looking to dump financial responsibility on others.

25 Nick January 7, 2017 at 4:23 PM

I don’t own the sidewalk in front of our home – the city does. I don’t care what the law says. I’m not spending any money or time on it. And, no, nobody has ever gotten hurt on a sidewalk in front of any home I’ve ever lived in.

Our home is newer construction. Good thing the sidewalk is new too.

26 Ancient Mariner January 7, 2017 at 4:30 PM

27 Jojo Potato January 7, 2017 at 4:58 PM

WATCH OUT it happen to our family. Some lady said she fell because our sidewalk was uneven. She did not knock on our door to tell us she had hurt herself. She did not take photos. The first we knew about it is when we got a letter from her attorney. We contacted the city of Concord, they said it was our liability. Long story short, she got what she wanted $$$.

30 Atticus Thraxx January 7, 2017 at 7:48 PM

Ancient I got curious and looked through my books as to why the AR-18 didn’t really stick with anyone. I could find no reference of any US military units issuing it, but that means diddly-squat. Mostly the AR-18 seemed to be the victim of bad timing. Armalite was owned by a parent company that sold the AR-10 and AR-15 designs to Colt and then spun off Armalite. The AR-18 was only in advanced prototype and not really ready for trials. The AR-15/M-16 won the contract and that seemed to be that. A couple of countries did buy production licenses and some mostly back-water countries did buy some from Armalite to issue but they had more police forces than armies. Also seems the AR-18 being stamped and welded components and instead of forged like western weapons generally were, and so suffered from some misplaced snobbery. Still a solid platform and it was iconic to the I.R.A.
From wiki:
The IRA’s main gun runner in the USA was George Harrison, an IRA veteran, resident in New York since 1938. Harrison bought guns for the IRA from a Corsican arms dealer named George de Meo, who had connections in organised crime. Joe Cahill acted as the contact between NORAID and Harrison. In 1971, the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) had already seized 700 modern weapons from the IRA, including 2 tonnes of high explosive and 157,000 rounds of ammunition, most of which were US made.
Harrison spent an estimated US$1 million in the 1970s purchasing over 2,500 guns for the IRA.[10] According to Brendan Hughes, an IRA member who later became Officer Commanding of the IRA inside Long Kesh prison, the IRA smuggled small arms from the United States by sea on Queen Elizabeth 2 from New York via Southampton, through Irish members of her crew, until the network was cracked down on by the FBI in the 1980s. These Queen Elizabeth 2 shipments included M16, CAR-15, AR-18 and AR-15 Armalite rifles, accompanied by Browning pistols and Smith & Wesson pistols and revolvers and were driven from Southampton to Belfast in small consignments.
n the late 1970s, another IRA member, Gabriel Megahey, was sent to the United States to acquire more arms and he was able to procure more AR-15 Armalites, plus a number of Heckler & Koch rifles and other weapons. Again, the purchase of these weapons was funded by Irish American republicans.A batch of M60 machine guns was imported in 1977.

Harrison was arrested by the FBI in 1981, but acquitted at his trial.Megahey was arrested by the FBI in 1982 after a successful “sting operation”, where he was trying to purchase surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) for the IRA, and sentenced to seven years in prison.

I guess they wanted Ireland to be free from British rule or something. I can dig that. Monarchy as it turns out, has the same effect on the Irish that it had on American colonists. Makes them kinda ‘shooty’.

32 Ancient Mariner January 7, 2017 at 9:06 PM

Thanks for the info, Atticus.
I’m not too keen on kings myself, even if they go by a different title. (Your King of Morocco looks cool, though).
The IRA eventually figured out a winning strategy – attack where it hurts – the money. Place a truck bomb (a big one) right next to the stock exchange or some other big-money location. Add anti-tamper devices. Call in warnings to a hundred different sites – radio, TV, police, fire, newspapers, everybody, to make sure the area is evacuated. If they hadn’t done that (and called only the police), the British would have pretended there was no warning and they would have let the bomb detonate, killing many, and turning public opinion against the Irish. Remember, the British can be that ruthless when necessary. So the truck bombs went off, damaging the financial world. The SAS tried to get the Irish to start killing each other at home (rather than allowing the war to be fought in England) by encouraging Protestant atrocities against civilian Catholics. But the IRA didn’t bite – they had excellent fire discipline, so they didn’t start tit-for-tat atrocities – they kept attacking financial targets in England. Next stop – the negotiating table.

39 Mary Fouts January 8, 2017 at 11:32 AM

Original G – This post is dedicated to you.

Since it’s a stay indoors day today, if you do one thing, take Original G’s advice to check your clothes dryer for lint buildup, including popping off the bottom panel and checking your vent line.

Put load of laundry in dryer about 10 AM. Washer/dryer are in mud room adjacent to kitchen, was having a bite to eat. Smelled a burning acrid smell. No smoke yet (detectors never went off), but clearly burning smell. It was the dryer, Jim popped the bottom panel off and there was 1/3 inch layer of lint on bottom that was charred black, and charring on motor & motor wires. Had we not been home, we are certain we would have had a devastating house fire. Shows it doesn’t take much lint to start a dryer fire. Also, thankful for our fire extinguishers, even though didn’t need to use one today.

Jim is heading to Sears for a new dryer, current one was old, too. We hauled it out to back patio (away from house) to be safe.

That is really good advise Mary Fouts. I’m so glad you caught that when you did. I’m glad the Cedar Waxwings are there. That seems to mean they will come strip those same trees here soon. It’s the only thing I like about the trees.

If there’s wildlife in your garage and you have the dryer out there, they will break into your vent tubing and drag stuff in there to make a cozy warm nest also. Very dangerous.

42 Melanie January 8, 2017 at 12:43 PM

We have our vents, etc. checked out and cleaned on a regular basis. It’s worth it – otherwise you things can catch on fire.

I don’t think to do these things, but my husband does. Thank goodness.

43 Anon January 8, 2017 at 4:55 PM

Sounds like another bureaucratic racketeering scheme. You are responsible for the sidewalk – So why not just remove it and extend your yard to the street.
Majority of people seem to like walking on the street anyway.

PS – I stubbed my toe pretty hard when walking full stride on a sidewalk and that ended that walk for the day. I guess I wasn’t the only one, a couple of months later the city ground down all of the uneven sidewalk joints in that neighborhood.

Mary Fouts, Wow, Glad you caught it.

Couple of weeks ago a loud clicking sound once per revolution.
Had to unwind a zippered sweatshirt then take our electric dryer apart to dig out the zipper pull.

First time taking it apart, found a plastic squirrel cage impeller with a lint build up on it. Another item to add that to the yearly list. And yes there was a lint buildup in bottom of our machine.
………….
This is why you think what could possibly go wrong before you do something. With 40 years in industrial maintenance have found it is not if something is going to go wrong it’s when.

You don’t really expect County Connection to travel to Alameda County or SF, do you?

County Connection probably transports a very small percentage of residents in Contra Costa County that don’t drive. How many of those people do you really think would go to Oakland or SF even if they offered it? That’s what BART is for. Or your own car.

Bus service in the suburbs isn’t like bus service in large cities. It’s elderly people, college students and people who don’t drive – getting around town.

County Connection is for Contra Costa County, not Alameda or SF. It’s not County Connections fault that you’re unhappy with BART.

There’s your answer.

Nick, thanks for your rather nasty response. Glad you’re such a happy individual.

Nick is telling it like it is. CCC buses stay in CCC.

@Turn & Burn – I hope the teenager reads your post and heeds the message.

To the student that drives the champagne colored older Toyota pickup truck with an extended cab and with the bed of the truck enclosed in a wood slat frame – I saw what you did on Newhall Parkway this afternoon. You really had to drive where it’s not paved and it was muddy? You have no idea what you’ve done to the one street over (where you have a friend). I know you go to CVCHS, and I’ve spoken to you before about your speed. I will get your license plate and inform CPD.

Watch it, because I’m watching you.

The rain has washed everything clean, the streets, buildings, and all the foliage are going to glow once the sun comes out.

.. for selling a generic to the EpiPen for a 6th of the competitor’s price. (Yahoo news)
I don’t use the item myself, but hate RIPOFFS in medicine (and in our government. Don’t get me started.)

Are both homeowners liable for shared fence replacement? I got conflicting information from city hall vs online California law. Has anyone sued in Small Claims Court and won/collected from neighbor who refused to pay?

Re: Fence
Although I’m no expert, having witnessed a few fence disputes I have observed that that they can quickly become a can of worms. With no written agreements, and on whose property the existing fence sits is just the beginning. If I couldn’t come to agreement with my neighbor, I would build the fence I want on my own property and leave the neighbor out of the equation. Although that doesn’t seem fair, you have probably told your kids at one time or another “the world isn’t fair”. Don’t forget, if you accidentally put the fence on the neighbor’s property, he owns it, and I’ll bet neither you nor the neighbor even know exactly where the property line is.

Poor neighboring on your part in my opinion. Kirkwood has good advice. If someone decided to do some even minor construction that put me on the hook for a bill, they better show up at my door with a good bottle of wine and an even better story.

65 Melanie January 12, 2017 at 6:55 PM

I agree with Kirkwood. It’s easier to pay for the fence yourself than have a dispute with a neighbor and have to live next door to someone for the next 20-30 years.

We replaced a fence once and paid for it ourselves without involving the neighbor. Asking them for money didn’t even cross our mind. We bought what we wanted and paid for it ourselves. Like everything else we buy.
