California Community Colleges, Including Diablo Valley College, Reaffirm Values of Inclusiveness and Diversity Following Presidential Election – DVC Offers Safe-Space on Monday

The Contra Costa Community College District released the following statement this week from the California Community Colleges District in regards to President-Elect Donald Trump’s victory:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – As student government leaders from around the state gather in Sacramento for their general assembly, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office on Thursday reminded students, including undocumented students, that financial aid remains available for them to pursue their educational goals.

“While the presidential election has been divisive and has sparked anxiety and uncertainty on our campuses, we will always embrace the values of inclusion and diversity and support all students who want to build better lives for themselves and their communities,” said Interim Chancellor Erik E. Skinner.

“No student should forgo the opportunity to apply for financial assistance at our colleges.” In California, in-state enrollment fees and state financial aid — including fee waivers, Cal Grant and privately funded institutional scholarships — are available to certain undocumented students, or Dreamers.

These benefits are protected by California law, and more information can be found by clicking on the “Dream Act” link at icanaffordcollege.com.

Skinner also noted that community college financial aid and student services professionals are available to support undocumented students, and several colleges have on-campus Dream Centers. “We look forward to joining the leaders of the Student Senate for the California Community Colleges this weekend to reaffirm our commitment that our colleges are welcoming and supportive for students of all backgrounds,” said Skinner, who added that the community college system will continue to work closely with the University of California and California State University systems on supporting all students.

In response, Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill sent the following memo to students offering a safe-space to talk on Monday, Nov.14.

In a recent email, Chancellor of the Contra Costa Community College District forwarded a communication to all employees reaffirming our deep commitment “to our mission of inclusion and support for the great diversity of our student population.”

We at DVC also acknowledge the emotions of fear and anxiety many of our colleagues and students are experiencing as a result of recent events.

In response, the DVC community is invited to gather in the Commons on Monday Nov.14 from 12:30 – 3 p.m.

Holding space to share our reactions, feelings, and emotions is critical. The gathering is an action that reaffirms DVC’s commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion. It also allows space, where as a community, we are able to stand together, and engage in difficult conversations with respect and civility.

What happens to these sensitive cupcakes when they get in the real world?

3 Wowza November 12, 2016 at 2:58 PM

Quite an improvement since the days when the
black guys used to catcall the white girls coming and
going in the DVC cafeteria. Those girls certainly didn’t
get any “safe space.”

Soon President Trump will get started on his mandate to build a wall and (finally) secure our borders. GOOD.

Once that work is done to the satisfaction of the voters who elected him, it will be time to deal with the illegals and their undocumented children.

Don’t expect any mass deportations. Once the border is secured and the criminal aliens are gone, the remaining illegals and their kids will be dealt with humanely.

Not very inclusive for people who grew up in this area.

Heck, we don’t what any companion in America. We don’t need people taken our jobs that Americans can’t or wont do. Heck no! We don’t need people that do better is school then Americans. We will just kick them out and make our own people think they are better untill the real world hits us in the face. Why should we try to be REALLY better then the other guy? We live in a country where there is companion in most every thing here. But when the other guy is better I will just yell foul and kick them out. That will make us strong and competitive in the world. Will it not?

@Dig Your Own Grave- some of those Asians DID grow up in this area. My son is Asian American and attends DVC. He was born in California and has lived kn Contra Costa County since he was 5 months old.

Will they offer ‘safe’ spaces for Trump supporters? Seems like the Left is responsible for the riots, looting, and destruction of property, not to mention the assault of innocent people. Just saying…

14 chuckie the troll November 12, 2016 at 3:48 PM

Why reinforce fear, paranoia, and bad behavior?

The 10 Commandment made it all pretty easy to understand. Thou SHALL NOT…steal, envy, kill, etc…do no harm, no matter who it is.

These talks always seem to reinforce the idea that the OTHER people are bad. And that’s why the poor guy waiting at the back was robbed and assaulted. It was OK because he was one of THOSE people.

“Safe Space”? We went from 18 year olds storming the beaches of Normandy to “Safe Spaces ” at college because their wittle feelings get hurt? This country is doomed no matter who gets elected. SMH.

17 Liberals! Quell Your Fears! November 12, 2016 at 4:18 PM

Liberals, please, quell your fears! You will likely still be able to receive welfare. You will likely still be able to live in your parent’s basements. Those of you who do work and employ illegal, immigrant labor to remodel your kitchen, repair your roof, and do your gardening, (and are happy to pay them less than minimum wage), you will probably not lose your illegal workers unless they are convicted felons. So, do not despair! Your double-standard life-style will continue, whether in the U.S. (hopefully not), in Canada (hopefully yes) or in Mexico (preferred choice).

I bet very few of the “safe space” people are enrolled in solid subjects such as chemistry, engineering, mathematics or any other subject that requires actual knowledge of facts and how to apply that knowledge.

I bet most of them are in the touch-feely subjects such as sociology, political communication and philosophy – the kind of subject in which feelings and opinions count the way knowledge counts in the solid subjects.

26 Officer Barbrady November 12, 2016 at 5:05 PM

We need to remember that all young people aren’t wimps. For some of our young folks a safe space is a foxhole in Afghanistan. Their best friend isn’t some patronizing college official . It’s the guy in the next foxhole.

27 Elisa November 12, 2016 at 5:21 PM

@#17, while I agree that some of these “safespaces” are maybe a little silly, I have to call you out on one thing. Yes, 18 year olds did storm the beaches of Normandy and witnessed the atrocities of the Vietnam war afterward. It doesn’t mean they weren’t affected for life. It might have outwardly appeared that they just “sucked it up” but internally, these men were traumatized for the rest of their lives. There was no PTSD diagnosis back then, it was just “shellshock”, So, these 18 year olds came home with no one to talk to about their feelings and emotions and suffered irreparable damage, becoming homeless, abusing their wives or families because they were trying to stifle feelings they couldn’t control, even committing suicide. What does a little understanding hurt? Does empathy hurt anybody in the end even if the issue at hand might seem overblown?

28 Beacon November 12, 2016 at 5:34 PM

I don’t understand people’s fear. I get they don’t like Trump and what he stands for, but I’ve heard people interviewed at these “rally’s” and they say they are afraid for their life. There are checks and balances in place to prevent a president from doing anything illegal. Do people think local, state and federal laws have been thrown out the window? I don’t get it. Do they think racist people will rise and begin murdering anyone who is non-white? The stories I’ve seen in the media indicate the anti-Trump people are the one’s committing crimes against others.

These are two examples from Claycord.com

@Elisa

I call BS. Don’t confuse PSTD with what these candy a$$ little pukes with safe spaces are dealing with. Yes, the boys and men going to war see the very worst of cruelty of mankind. My dad and his four brothers saw action in Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, North Africa, the South Pacific, and Vietnam. They all came back and and lived their lives, raised their families, and made something of their lives. We are talking about little maggots that get all buthurt because of name calling or their candidate didn’t win. It’s so pathetic on a grand scale that it makes me sick. I have nothing but the highest of admiration for the kids going into the military. Guess what princess, bootcamp is pretty rough and tumble too. No safe places there.
The pussification of America is near.

32 ? November 12, 2016 at 5:48 PM

So you are going to use OUR tax dollars to go agains the vote? Really?
Would it be discrimination when my American born white son is picked over for an asian with the same grades etc?
It is beyond reason how people say that us “white” folks are racists.
Then what are you?

33 rainy November 12, 2016 at 5:49 PM

this kind of stuff is why Trump won. we can try to make are selfs feel better.

34 waaaaaah November 12, 2016 at 5:49 PM

Why hasn’t there been a safe spot for the rest of us to gather and talk about crime committed by illegal aliens, free court representation, incarceration, clothing and food paid for by me, our government not shipping them back AND keeping them out for good. I’ve also been wanting to talk about #ALLlivesmatter, protests that block freeways, sanctuary cities, tax raising to pay for more and more and more handouts, and so many other things. I demand equal safe space for these concerns and more!

35 Give me a break! November 12, 2016 at 6:00 PM

Citizens and legal immigrants have a cap to how much financial aid they can get. That financial aid becomes smaller and smaller the more it gets spread with those who are not here legally. If those people really want to change their lives and are afraid, they should go and start a violent protest and demand the current LatinAmerican presidents to step off. Those failed governmens are what forces immigrante to come here. Why they always come to the US and California? Why not go to Europe or somewhere else? Why is it always here? If they are afraid they would stay home, what safer place than that? Stop the violent protests. There are student at DVC who have emotional and learning disabilities but dont have a safe space on campus, why is this any different!?

36 New generation November 12, 2016 at 6:21 PM

Dont call them Generation X anymore, their new name is Generation Kleenex or Generation I need a tissue. DVC as an educational institution should remain neutral about this issue, students should be there learning not having to feel like they have to pick a side of the fence. There are students who dont care whether Hillary had won or not. There are students who may have voted for Trump or did not go vote. Will those students find a safe place too to express their emotions?

Ivy league students get coloring books and puppies
http://bit.ly/2g6mU9

Students at the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania were being coddled by administrators in response to Donald Trump’s victory in Tuesday’s presidential election.

. . . “There were actual cats, AND a puppy there,” Tancredi told The College Fix.

“Sheets of paper with printed designs on them were on hand for students to color in. The pages had positive feel-good messages on them. Students colored them in with colored pencils.”

“Somehow, diversity at Penn is not diversity of opinion. The opinion of almost half the country is almost unaccounted for on campus.”

“I’m worried for my fellow students. If the result of an election takes this much of a toll on their well-being, what is going to happen when they have to face actual difficulties in the real world?”

Giving puppies to these little rug rats is cruelty to animals.
Question: Where’s PETA when you need them?

42 Rob November 12, 2016 at 7:01 PM

Good for DVC!!!
But…
Trump Fans – get ready to be disappointed…
Trump is more than 2 months from taking the Oath…
And he is already retreating on…
1) The Wall – Newt said it was a “Campaign Device”.
2) ObamaCare – now its going to be “Amended” keeping the main part that costs the most money for insurance companies.
3) They are no longer talking about doing anything on Hillary.

As for jobs – I feel most sorry for the folks losing jobs to China and Automation…

But those jobs ain’t coming back – except – coming back to be automated…

I heard some folks who work for Carrier, which Trump kept talking about and he promised them that if elected their jobs would not go to Mexico – and they were very, very concerned that Trump may not keep his promise because folks from Mexico are touring the plant, examining the equipment and starting to get training…

Well, sorry, but bad news, Carrier said that they are still taking those jobs to Mexico…

Trump can put on Tariffs like he promised – only Congress can do that and Congress is in the hands of Conservative – Free Market – Republicans – they ain’t gonna stop a company from taking jobs elsewhere to make a larger profit nor are they going to impose Tariffs…

But – I guess Trump is a Republican now – so those folks will remember that Republicans did not save their jobs as promised…

This safe space puppys and soap bubbles crap in colleges is absurd. This country would be so much better off if students would be in an environment that supports confronting opposing viewpoints and honest reasonable discussion of the merits of opinions other than their own. Protecting people from hurt feelings and stifling opposition only encourages the refusal to compromise that has led to the polarisation and gridlock that we, all of us, suffer from now.

Leave the puppies and bubbles for the elementary schools. College students need to buck up and learn to be adults.

48 Elisa November 12, 2016 at 8:37 PM

@30, I did mention that I too, thought it was silly. but it isn’t REALLY hurting anyone so why get up in arms about it? When I brought up PTSD I was alluding to the Normandy comparison and how people should just “man up” or you’re a loser. I think society is just starting to make strides to get past that mentality and ok, making damn fools of themselves in some instances, but extremes are normal for a new way of thinking and the end goal of less stigma about showing emotion is worth putting up with the silliness, I think.

Special Snowflake Syndrome
A malady affecting a significant portion of the world’s population wherein the afflicted will demand special treatment, conduct themselves with a ludicrous, unfounded sense of entitlement, and generally make the lives of everyone around them that much more miserable.

The danger of this disease is that the sufferers rarely, if ever, know that they have contracted it, and continue about their merry way under the assumption that EVERYONE ELSE is the problem.

This condition, if left untreated, can radically alter the carrier’s demeanor, to include any of the following: a complete devolution to child-like behavior, temper tantrums, and/or fits of narcissistic rage.

How about teaching some remedial U.S. Civics courses instead of extolling the virtues of Mexico, North Korea, and Iran? Those countries need walls to keep people in and we need them to keep people out.

Nationwide, various teachers unions donated tons of money to elect Hillary. Now that she has lost, perhaps they need puppies and coloring books too.

I wonder if a lot of this stuff about “safe spaces” is really about teachers infantilizing their students as a means of venting their own anger at their loss of power.

For example:

Hillary’s Teachers’ Union Sellout
A one-time charter school supporter, Clinton now does the bidding of the American Federation of Teachers.

goo.gl/6aglUFcontent_copyCopy short URL

In 2015–16 the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) spent $28,593,366 on political activities and lobbying.

The money flowed leftward. Since 1990, AFT has given $76,446,797 to Democrats and liberals and just $363,000 to Republicans and conservatives.

The AFT made “contributions, gifts, and grants” of $5,076,607 in 2015–2016. But not to the Boy Scouts or the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Almost 10 percent of the union’s gifts went to the Clintons: $250,000 to both the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative.

61 Dr. Strangelove November 12, 2016 at 11:29 PM

When I read MOST of the comments here, I am first struck by the lack of common decency that is lacking in ANY conversation having to do with politics, but more than that I am amazed by the callousness and viscousness towards each other…..It is a shameful way to be…But, as the recent “festivities” have proven, there’s no shame in America anymore….

I am sorry that our college educational systems have tried to create such overly pc environments. I agree with everyone on here that it is getting a bit ridiculous. What I do NOT agree with is that encouraging this generation to express their emotions and not being afraid to be labeled as as “pussies” is wrong. Creating these “safe rooms” and creating “trigger alerts” for classes is stupid and makes a joke out of the cause. This has happened because no moderate, intelligent person has striven to fulfill a need so the extremists have taken over the issue and are ruining a movement that could benefit all of us if undertaken correctly.

Mitch Daniels for Secretary of Education
goo.gl/bZ6xDKcontent_copyCopy short URL

Mitch Daniels was the Republican Governor of Indiana from 2005 through 2013. He pushed through the right-to work law that led to the boom in Indiana’s economy — a boom that sucked in jobs from bordering blue states (such as Illinois).

Growth rates climbed during his years—helping give a boost to Mike Pence’s campaign for governor in 2013. Daniels was such a popular governor with a solid track record that he was touted as a prospect for president.

He chose to become president of Purdue University.

In his first year, with over 38,700 students, Daniels moved to rein in runaway costs, including a two-year tuition freeze, which he now wants to extend into a third year, while calling for $40 million in university-wide spending cuts.

He also focused on holding the university accountable to students who shoulder heavy debt and face uncertain job prospects, by pressing the faculty and staff to come with up performance-based metrics on which they can be graded.

He often said, “College costs too much and delivers too little.”

Hillary supporters and the pain of delusion
goo.gl/btN7i8content_copyCopy short URL

Opinions in schools, colleges, and universities that run contrary to progressive dogma are crushed on the grounds that opposing views may offend someone.

In the workplace, expressing conservative views is attacked on the grounds that differences of opinion may create a “hostile work environment.”

A relative of mine wrote a rant on facebook full of love and her angst over her queen’s loss. Then she pretty much dissed her Trump-supporting relatives in no uncertain terms.

But, tens of millions of voters recognized Hillary the grifter; her decades of criminal activity, and her lies.

The Clinton campaign was under the mistaken impression that most Americans are inferior, racist, and stupid. We are not.

The Democrats were able to brow beat the “deplorable” half of the county into oppressed silence. They were able to suppress our free speech–but not our vote.

77 Joe November 13, 2016 at 9:08 AM

“the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office on Thursday reminded students, including undocumented students, that financial aid remains available for them to pursue their educational goals.”

Really? I’m all for helping people but there’s something wrong with a system that allows undocumented students to receive financial aid from the documented taxpayers.

78 Nick November 13, 2016 at 9:34 AM

These comments are embarrassing. Wow.

79 Wowza November 13, 2016 at 9:48 AM

Their time would be better spent educating
them on legal immigration, and how our system
of government and laws work, because they
appear to be ignorant in that regard.

80 Sanctimonious J November 13, 2016 at 9:53 AM

This is exactly the kind of thing that resulted in Trump being elected.

81 NoMoreFreeRide November 13, 2016 at 10:15 AM

@ #17 – So very true

82 2 Points November 13, 2016 at 10:25 AM

It’s pretty obvious that Claycord is read by the older generation based on the comments. It’s not the president these people are afraid of. It’s the people who elected him. The door has opened for people to be hateful to their faces and it’s “OK”. There are no boundaries for them to show their hate anymore.

If you don’t understand the economical reprocations of getting rid of illegal immigrants would have then go pick your own strawberries. If you demand a raise on working this job those strawberries will no longer be $2.99 but more like $7.99. So if you’re making $16/HR it would take you 30 min of work to be able to afford that 1 pack of strawberries. If you are retired and on a fixed income you definitely wont be having strawberries.

83 Wowza November 13, 2016 at 10:34 AM

You all sound like burnt out social workers.

84 Mr White November 13, 2016 at 10:56 AM

Go recycle something, it will make you all feel better
Yeah, I voted for Trump, and in 4 years I’ll be doing it again

85 @2 Points November 13, 2016 at 11:00 AM

You obviously don’t go grocery shopping. Go to the grocery store one day for a change and PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to the labels on the fruit. Those labels on fruits and vegs have written on them where they came from and it is not the USA. Tomatoes, mangoes, avocados, AND STRAWBERRIES have a label on them that reads “Product of Mexico”. There are also a handful of places here in the area where during summer you can go pick, on your own, a bucket full of strawberries for $5.
It is not only older generation who read Claycord…btw.
Many people are fed up with Hispanic being a code word for Mexican or illegal immigrant.

86 @2 Points November 13, 2016 at 11:17 AM

We can live without strawberries. I’m thinking the bigger issue is people’s yards and homes. Imagine if they have to take care of themselves rather than paying people to mow and clean. Both WC’s, Walnut Creek and the water closet, will be looking pretty shabby.

This is the guy to contact with your issues relating to this (5 stories down)

@ 80:
I’m not judging anybody – I merely made the observation that (from what I personally have encountered) the students of fluffy subjects are the students more likely to assume that their emotions should take precedence over facts, and these students are the ones more likely to harass, bully, shout down and eventually riot against those who disagree with them.

89 Generation snowflake November 13, 2016 at 11:36 AM

I grow my own strawberries, but at least my tax dollars won’t be waisted on those who don’t pay taxes.

We should have the non-violent criminals pick the fruit. Beats letting them out.

90 Anon November 13, 2016 at 11:50 AM

Some of us are genuinely afraid. I might lose my healthcare.

And no, I’m not a kid. I’m a senior, and I take care of my Veteran husband and developmentally disabled stepson.

91 Wowza November 13, 2016 at 11:54 AM

I am soooo going to enjoy seeing Trump and
his beautiful family kick the Kardashians and
their trashy pimp friends to the curb.

92 TinFoiler November 13, 2016 at 12:04 PM

I never thought that the FEMA camps could possibly be used for these sore losers.
I’m sure when Trump makes an appearance in a City near you and the Secret Service and Local PD block off streets for security reasons – They will give you all a free pass when you chant: “Not My President” and they will change their course to avoid you and your safe space :)
Take your own medicine and GET OVER IT, your childishness is only guaranteeing an 8 year run for Trump.

93 Really? November 13, 2016 at 12:12 PM

About 85 of you here sound like the actual sensitive, whiny, wah-wahs to me. Enjoy your Trump victory.

94 Baby Mac November 13, 2016 at 12:15 PM

I am shocked by the vitriol comments on this post. Did you read the DVC article? They are trying to assuage the fears of young people who are trying to better their lives by attending college. All immigrants have their own unique stories. Prejudiced thinking, name calling and assuming you know what is best for them is not helpful on any level. You complain when by claiming immigrants are “criminals, milking our system” and now you are insulting young people who are IN COLLEGE. Please try to be kinder. I have a high schooler, and her friends are reading your comments. They are a culturally diverse group of thoughtful kids who are trying to understand the current chaotic political climate. Do you even know what is happening in our schools right now? The educated discussions our teachers have been tasked with the responsibilty of leading? Hate is not the answer. The Holocaust and Japanese internment camps proved that. Why do you feel threatened by groups that you feel are beneath you? Peace to all of us. Please stop being hateful.

The trumps will get there “Safe-Spaces” too with the “Wall” and all, so don’t despair you are not getting left out. LOL

@Baby Mac

If they are here illegally, they ARE criminals.

98 Frank November 13, 2016 at 1:21 PM

I understand immigrants of recent vintage may be upset. I called the house hold servants in and reassured them they are safe for now. Should their efforts flag , that’s another thing. La Migra is only a phone call away

99 Wowza November 13, 2016 at 1:25 PM

During the 60s, my sister and I went to Sacramento
to join a protest of cuts to education during the time
Reagan was Govenor. People driving by with their
children in the car, the ones who would also be
adversely effected by the cuts, were flipping us off.
What comes around goes around. Some of the
opinions here have been years in the making. Why
are you surprised?

100 Dennis November 13, 2016 at 1:32 PM

@2 points
Can you understand the difference between welcoming immigrants to a country with 1000 Sq mi per person and discouraging immigration to a country that has thousands of people per square mile?
Immigrants coming here legally are welcome. Those who break our laws getting here are not.
