Claycord – Talk About Whatever

September 23, 2016 19:10 pm · 79 comments

Happy Friday to all the wonderful citizens in the City of Claycord.

This is a post with no subject, you can talk about whatever you want. If breaking news happens (such a shooting, earthquake, etc.), or you hear about something newsworthy, feel free to post it here.

Have you ever paid close attention to how you dry yourself after a shower? I know, I’m riveted too.
Today, just for the hell of it, I tried switching up the order in which I dried myself, and the result was staggeringly weird. Parts of my body that thought they should be getting dried started moving like they were getting dried, but the towel was way up there on another part. I got so confused about what was going on, and what was dried or not, that I saw no other option except starting over, and following my normal drying order. Then, and only then, it felt right. Before you say “My god, who is this idiot?”, try it yourself. Try drying in a radically different order than you’re used to. Then get back to me.

I’m surprised you even mentioned it, (spayed is offensive by the way!) but no mustache is definitely a plus… She’s young & beautiful? Really? Sounds too good to be true…. so what’s the catch?

Hey WC, please STOP CLOSING LANES on westbound Ygnacio during the daytime. Yet again, I was late for an appointment because of an unexpected large backup in the westbound direction. They had a lane closed at 12pm during the lunch hour rush, starting around Homestead and ending around Civic. They need to do the work at night!! It took me nearly 45 minutes to get from Oak Grove to 680.

The Irish are always the first ones to come to the aid of their fellow
Shortly after take-off on an outbound, evening Aer Lingus flight from
Dublin to Boston, the lead flight attendant nervously made the
following painful announcement in her lovely Irish brogue:

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’m so very sorry, but it appears that there
has been a terrible mix-up by our catering service. I don’t know how
this has happened, but we have 103 passengers on board, and
unfortunately, we received only 40 dinner meals. I truly apologize for this mistake and

When the muttering of the passengers had died down, she continued,
“Anyone who is kind enough to give up their meal so that someone
else can eat, will receive free and unlimited drinks for the
duration of our 10 hour flight.

Her next announcement came about 2 hours later:

“If anyone is hungry, we still have 40 dinners available.”

js, I agree wholeheartedly about Bill’s Ace Hardware on Clayton Road! I hope they are able to stay in business for a LONG time. Service is definitely the name of their game though they have great inventory and prices are competitive as well. If you have to fix something you’ve never dealt with before, not only will someone immediately help find what you need, there will also most likely be someone on hand who can tell you how, and they really know what they are talking about. It’s happened for us many times over the years. It’s like it used to be, before all the big-box stores were around with just cashiers to ring you up and often someone at the door to make sure you paid for everything.

@ js No. 16:
Yes I agree – Bill’s Ace Hardware is the greatest!
My go-to hardware store used to be Orchard Supply & Hardware on Monument Blvd – it was great store in it’s day. Bill’s Ace moved into the old Hogan’s location (closer to me) so I tried it. But I had to keep going to OSH for various reasons. After a while, it was Ace that had the better service, more knowledgeable people and better products. So that’s my go-to hardware store now. I can buy just one bolt, instead of a five-pack. The people there are smart and know their hardware. That’s always my first hardware stop – I don’t go to HD unless I have to.

29 Kirkwood September 24, 2016 at 9:38 PM

Speaking of scams, I recently got hit with a ransomware virus that hijacked my browser. In addition to blocking my browser page a voice came over the sound system that said that all my personal information, credit cards, etc. had been downloaded and ordered me to call a phone number within 1 minute or my computer would be trashed. At that point I turned the machine off but the damage was done. All my apps were gone and Windows was damaged beyond repair. Had to reformat and reload Windows and rebuild the system.
The good news is that no private information is stored on the machine and all my data is on a physically separate drive that is backed up to a thumb drive.

30 Silva September 24, 2016 at 11:10 PM

Atticus Thraxx, That was a mighty fine list. Thank you.

About that spray, I had to stop reading the reviews after just a few, and there are thousands. I was overcome by incapacitating laughter, and had to stop. Underdeveloped sense of humor, I think.

31 Silva September 24, 2016 at 11:16 PM

Kirkwood, That’s horrible nasty. Do people do that for fun? I don’t get it. I’m glad you had your data stored. I’ve got to do that. Very important.

32 TIFOKCIS September 25, 2016 at 9:08 AM

You wear a LOVE shirt and flip me off when I make a complete stop at a stop sign and drive the speed limit. Then, You sit through a green light texting and flip me off for honking at You to go.

I didn’t speed, run one red light, tailgate or scream and flip anyone off yet I parked before You and walked in the store right behind You as your face was sucked into Your dumb-phone.

Celebrate the new head, millennial, emotionalism of ME FIRST F-YOU.

33 Justifyable Anger September 25, 2016 at 10:00 AM

Haha sickofit. Slow and steady wins the race!

34 Kirkwood September 25, 2016 at 11:51 AM

Silva – Ransomware usually targets small businesses that often have poor security and don’t regularly back up their files. The demanded ransom is typically small (perhaps a couple hundred dollars) so that the victim would rather pay than deal with loss of data.
In my case I was searching for a discontinued file for my weather station. I found a website called “File Finder” that claimed to have the file I was looking for. I downloaded “the file” which was my undoing.

35 TIFOKCIS September 25, 2016 at 12:05 PM

Driving the posted speed limit and obeying traffic laws doesn’t compute in my Conservative thinking as ‘slow’ but I appreciate your point :-)

Yes we get there and sometimes ahead of the ‘me now’ reckless idiots.

36 Silva September 25, 2016 at 12:42 PM

Kirkwood, I see. Chasing the old ill gotten gains. I recently thought I’d found an owner’s manual for my c. 1950 sewing machine, and maybe I had, I don’t know, but I downloaded it and got browser hijacked. Not so serious, and I straightened it out pretty quickly which was a minor miracle for me, but it did make me more aware about next having to learn how to backup my data.

37 Jojo Potato September 26, 2016 at 8:17 AM

Did you ever wonder about Systron Drive in Concord? It was named after the Systron Donner corporation that was headquartered there. I ran into a picture of their top of the line computer product from 1964. At about 700 pounds the model 80 did impress. Note the plants on top! (at least for the picture). Some proud Concord history right here.

They’re still in business today.

38 Kirkwood September 26, 2016 at 11:44 AM

Mr. Potato – I remember Systron Donner from the early 60’s in a wooden barracks-like bldg. in the same spot. They built components for the first inertial navigation systems used in submarines and later, aircraft.
When I worked for the City Of Concord I saw the City’s first mainframe, a 4 Mb Burroughs computer. It was about the size of a desk and used reel to reel tape drives nearly the size of a refrigerator and a hard drive that used removable stacks of disks. It served terminals in City Hall and was located in the basement of the P.D.
I have also seen an early Univac tube type computer under construction, that was made up of sections about 5x5x2’ and assembled like slices in a loaf of bread.

Silva Have one boss for some reason who insists I’m a bad influence.
Have no idea why he would say that. Still go to work for the benefits and the entertainment, in that order. There is just no way you can get that level of entertainment on daytime TV.

Like I tell the young people in maintenance the company provides mechanical an electrical engineers and bosses for our entertainment.
Bring popcorn.
My standard line is if you can’t have fun at work there’s no sense coming.
Workers all stressed out can’t focus on Safety.

But did had to stop telling the story about the engineer on a Monday morning who after looking all over for his Safety hard hat, found it in the freezer filled to the brim with ice.

A chase through the kitchen of a Vietnamese noodle restaurant ending at BART. Nice to see Police activity around Walnut Creek BART comes with an almost movie quality chase sequence. Outstanding !

Stay focused, ignore the noise, take care of you and yours and look for opportunities to help your community. And for God’s sake, stay out of the passing lane unless your passing!

Last night getting on BART I saw a lot of people getting on BART with foam earplugs and full enclosure headphones, so I quickly downloaded a sound pressure application onto my Smartphone.

In the station, the noise level in decibels was 73 which is about the same noise level as somebody talking at you.

Underway, the dB was 87, which is the sound of an alarm clock going off in your ear. Is this with the new tapered wheels? Is this the best that the BART design engineers can do?

AMTRAK is whisper quiet compared to BART plus the AMTRAK ride is much smoother than BART.
