The Water Cooler: Dogs in Todos Santos Plaza – Should they be Allowed?

March 31, 2016 12:00 pm · 47 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.

Today’s question….

Do you think dogs should be allowed in Concord’s Todos Santos Plaza?

Talk about it….

1 Rob March 31, 2016 at 12:02 PM

Dogs are fine – its the owners that are the problem – if we could trust the owners to have their dogs on leashes and maintain control – fine – but IMHO there are too many that don’t care about others…

So…

Unfortunately, I have to vote No Dogs…

2 Bucket man March 31, 2016 at 12:07 PM

No to many ppl walking around and irresponsible dog owners will leave there poop on the ground

3 Jojo Potato March 31, 2016 at 12:10 PM

It doesn’t matter what is allowed or not. Dog owners will bring their dogs everywhere. I’m sorry that so many people can’t deal with normal life without a “support” animal but that’s the way the law is written. Can’t question it, drives me crazy, but there it is.

4 anon March 31, 2016 at 12:16 PM

Even though they’re not supposed to be there I don’t see it enforced. Can’t anyone just say it’s their “service dog” and get away with it?

5 anonymous March 31, 2016 at 12:17 PM

Doesn’t really matter whether they’re “allowed” or not, does it? They’re not “allowed” there right now but you’ll find them there with their entitled owners every day of the week, often within sight of police officers who do nothing about it.

6 mailbabe March 31, 2016 at 12:18 PM

Absolutely not.

7 Cellophane March 31, 2016 at 12:23 PM

IF and only IF people would and/or could be responsible I would say yes.

From what I see, many people refuse to be responsible. Just look at all the people who refuse to keep their dogs on leashes even when cautioned by the police!

While there are a great many responsible dog owners there are enough dog owners who refuse to be responsible that allowing dogs in such a place can not be allowed.

8 KAD March 31, 2016 at 12:27 PM

Yes, on lease. I will not go there if I can’t take my dog. Is the City considering banding them in the Plaza?

9 Kirkwood March 31, 2016 at 12:28 PM

I would prefer not to see dogs in the Plaza, but a ban would be impractical, even impossible to enforce.

10 TeacherMan March 31, 2016 at 12:34 PM

As long as the owners keep control and clean up after them, sure.

11 TK March 31, 2016 at 12:35 PM

Yes. It’s a public park.

Leashed please.

12 anotheranon---- March 31, 2016 at 12:38 PM

Current policy/law states neither dogs nor smoking are allowed. Leave it that way.

13 Kitty Cat Crazy March 31, 2016 at 12:43 PM

No

14 No March 31, 2016 at 12:50 PM

NO dogs , there is dog park a few blocks away. Do owners dont clean up after their dogs, and very irresponsible.

15 Concord Guy March 31, 2016 at 12:53 PM

No. Children should be able to play in the grass without having do encounter dog poop and pee.

16 ME March 31, 2016 at 12:55 PM

I never go there but we’re talking about that lawn area in downtown Concord, right?

I don’t see a problem with it IF owners keep them leashed and clean up after them.

17 bubbles March 31, 2016 at 12:57 PM

Leave your dogs at home unless its specifically a dog park!
Even people that bring their dogs into stores outa bee told to leave immediately, they think they can just bring their dogs anywhere. Home Depot and Lowes are especially bad, I told one guy to get his dog out and he said he cant leave him in car cause its hot outside, and i replied them leave the friggin dog at home. If I wanted to be around dogs id go eat my lunch at the animal shelter and shop at pets mart.

18 Nick March 31, 2016 at 1:13 PM

I’m okay with dogs on a leash. It’s not enforced during concerts.

19 Chester E. Kitty March 31, 2016 at 1:27 PM

Only on a leash

20 @ Bucket man #2 March 31, 2016 at 1:30 PM

You have committed numerous violations of what is considered appropriate sentence structure, and grammar.

Very truly yours,

The Grammar Popo

21 94521 March 31, 2016 at 1:33 PM

No. They poop and piss all over the lawn. I wish I would see people being ticketed.

22 Mac March 31, 2016 at 1:35 PM

I think that this park has way too many people at it daily.
And seeing there are dog parks around the city.
I think this park should be people only.
Only dogs allowed at this park, should be Police dogs.

But that is just my opinion

23 The Mamba March 31, 2016 at 1:41 PM

I prefer dogs to most people, and these posts usually clearly illustrate why.

24 Justin March 31, 2016 at 1:55 PM

I think they should be allowed as long as people observe the laws regarding leashes and picking up poop.

But if you catch someone in violation – nail them to the wall.

25 Silva March 31, 2016 at 2:04 PM

It’s likely that some negligent owners would leave their pooch doo and not use leashes, and mess it up for everyone. No.

26 Barry March 31, 2016 at 2:05 PM

Nope, sorry no dogs.

Too many landmine oppertunities due to a few badly trained owners.

27 Fish March 31, 2016 at 2:09 PM

yes

28 Wear Floral Patterns March 31, 2016 at 2:18 PM

Designate areas to dogs like the old designated smoking areas, and always on leash. Park users who have allergies or fears (or dislikes) should be able to use the space as well. I think most people would comply to something is that perceived as fair.

29 Mutts March 31, 2016 at 3:03 PM

Dogs belong in the backyard.

30 Anon March 31, 2016 at 3:04 PM

Too few cops wil do their job & write tickets

31 NO March 31, 2016 at 3:30 PM

NO NO NO

32 Mimi (original) March 31, 2016 at 3:36 PM

I love having my dogs with me but I don’t appreciate sitting down on the grass and discovering someone’s dog has pee’d there! So, let’s leave human parks for humans, and dog parks for dogs. I think that’s the best way.

33 Anon March 31, 2016 at 3:40 PM

They can drain the fountain and have pit bull fights.

34 Anon March 31, 2016 at 3:42 PM

Can I bring my pet jackel if he’s on a leash?

35 LIH March 31, 2016 at 3:47 PM

Dear Grammar Popo,
Why is there a comma in your sentence?

36 In the 60s March 31, 2016 at 3:49 PM

What Snoopy was told ” No Dogs Allowed ! “

37 Mr. John March 31, 2016 at 3:50 PM

If you’re worried about pee or poo – Bad news. The birds, cats, squirrels, homeless, etc… don’t exactly spare the area.

If you’re worried about safety, it is a concern, but that is a concern with the people more than the animals. We need to get people that are irresonsible to learn to be responsible. Most people with unsafe animals are unsafe themselves.

As a result, I support dogs being allowed in Todos Santos and other places. However, I would have no problem with requiring a dog to either be a service animal or to have completed a ‘good citizen’ course and passed a test before it is allowed.

38 Silva March 31, 2016 at 4:33 PM

Wait… they could pee on the plaques! Yes! Yes!

39 anon March 31, 2016 at 4:48 PM

In Europe dogs can ride on buses and trains.

40 Mika March 31, 2016 at 4:53 PM

Even if the dog is on a leash, will the owner pick up his poop or wipe up it’s pee? My kids play on the grass.

41 b March 31, 2016 at 5:02 PM

no! dog owners cant control dogs well enough

42 94520 April 1, 2016 at 12:30 PM

I wasn’t aware dogs weren’t allowed there now. We often eat at the various restaurants there that allow dogs in their patios and then we all go for a walk around Todos Santos – our dogs always leashed and we always pick up after them.

43 WC April 1, 2016 at 2:28 PM

Keep ’em in your backyard or take them to the dog park. So no.

44 Dog Time April 1, 2016 at 5:25 PM

Yes, absolutely – especially since it will gall all the haters here.

Frankly, even completely feral dogs are more polite, personal and educated that most of the nasty folks who comment here, so let’s also ban all the “No Dog” people from Todos Santos too.

45 freedom2016 April 1, 2016 at 5:45 PM

NO! I am a dog owner but so tired of seeing dogs everywhere, grocery stores, malls come on people. I also feel when dogs are on someones lap while driving just as bad, if not worse then texting. give them a ticket!

46 Love My City April 2, 2016 at 8:31 PM

No. Too many dog owners are not responsible about keeping their dogs on leashes or picking up their poop. There are enough dog parks in Concord. Leave Todos Santos for people!

47 deb April 5, 2016 at 3:45 PM

Leashed dogs are fine. It is a park after all. But be reminded that state law does not allow dogs or any other animals around farmers’ markets (Tues and Thurs). It is enforced by the farmers’ market managers, too.
