Walnut Creek Police Officer Arrested for Allegedly Beating Woman with Baseball Bat

August 29, 2014 · 66 comments

A Walnut Creek police officer was arrested after allegedly donning a mask and beating a woman with a bat in Richmond earlier this month, a police captain said today.

Gregory Thompson, 53, of Martinez, was arrested in the early morning hours of Aug. 16 in Richmond, where he allegedly used a baseball bat to attack a woman walking in a residential neighborhood, according to Richmond police Capt. Bisa French.

He was not wearing a police uniform or in a police patrol car at the time of the alleged assault, she said.

Neither prosecutors nor Walnut Creek police Chief Thomas Chaplin were immediately available for comment on the case this morning.

The arrest happened after police received multiple calls around 2 a.m. on Aug. 16 about a woman screaming and a man with a bat, according to French. She said when officers arrived on the scene, a witness pointed out Thompson, who was sitting inside his parked car.

While talking with Thompson officers noticed a mask on the vehicle’s floorboard. A search of the car also turned up a bat, two guns and zip ties, French said.

Thompson, who identified himself as a police officer, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and felony vandalism, police said.

He was taken to county jail in Richmond and released the following day on bail.

The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries suffered in the attack and was expected to recover, French said.

She said police were unable to locate a second woman who was also reportedly struck by Thompson when she intervened to try to stop the attack.

What the heck is going our with our police staff? This is just getting to be too much.

No wonder WC is safe. All crimes are committed by its police officers and they never make it in the crime stats. Sadly, the rest of us who don’t live in WC have to deal with actual criminals whose job does not come with a uniform, law protection and a powerful car with sirens and pretty disco lights.

What is it with these idiot police officers these days??? You can’t look at media without seeing an incident that involves some criminal acts by those sworn to serve and protect. I am sure Officer Thompson is a wildly popular guy in the jail.

4 Michelle(original) August 29, 2014 at 12:24 PM

He was let out on bail!?

5 Insider August 29, 2014 at 12:24 PM

And next, he’ll seek a police disability pension for stress induced trauma and use that as the excuse for his actions.

6 Dorothy August 29, 2014 at 12:26 PM

Next the police will want more military type equipment so the citizens can’t do their own brand of justice.

7 C Lo August 29, 2014 at 12:30 PM

Well that’s comforting.

8 510 Resident August 29, 2014 at 12:31 PM

So glad I’m out of that horrible excuse for a ‘thriving’ city. Since living in a real thriving city, I actually enjoy high quality law enforcement and protection. Walnut Creek is such a dump.

Weird. I’m guessing some sort of lover’s triangle…

10 mika August 29, 2014 at 12:35 PM

Freaking weird. . .

11 Joseph August 29, 2014 at 12:38 PM

Pssshhhh what do you expect . Cops beat women children men animals anything they can get their hands on. Cops like violence, they feel their badge grants extra power. Show me a good cops I’ll show u a cop friend of his he knows is bad and does nothing about it.

Mental health issues? PTSD? Drug or alcohol related?

Very bizarre, and very scary for society.

14 Courtney August 29, 2014 at 12:45 PM

They actually recruit these type of people. Sad.

All of you people who are so surprised by this behavior clearly have never been personally involved with a police officer! I have! Pittsburg and WC BOTH.

17 Don P - n concord August 29, 2014 at 1:05 PM

This is all a big misunderstanding. Officer Friendly was actually defending himself from a dangerous suspect. The bat and ski masks were taken as evidence. Throw the book at that dangerous woman!

18 AnonoGOD August 29, 2014 at 1:06 PM

Oh heck.. Now I have to decide who was more wrong..

This guy, taking a nap, but put his keys in the ignition so now he’s considered DUI. Or the WC Cop?

20 Walter White August 29, 2014 at 1:06 PM

Sad, but not surprising. I often wonder how many cops like to play vigilante. And in some cases it’s probably justified.

21 Am Completely Shocked August 29, 2014 at 1:15 PM

Have always been very impressed with WCPD, with both their professionalism and responsiveness, but that is ONE BIG CAN OF CRAZY. What the hell??? I think WCPD needs to make a statement on this, whew.

22 anonanonagain August 29, 2014 at 1:19 PM

Just like any other field, lawyers, doctors, librarians, teachers, military staff, you are bound to find one or two nuts or many…..I’m not shocked at all. People are idiots. Hopefully this does not taint the countless decent men and women that help serve and protect us.

Let’s see and hear the evidence in a court of law through due process.

Unless of course Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson show up because they have already proven the defandent’s guilt without any knowledge of the facts.

Perhaps she suggested that his pension benefits were too generous?

26 Mee August 29, 2014 at 1:29 PM

I believe there are close to one million sworn officers in the US alone who respond to millions and millions of calls a year. Bad apples give the rest a bad name. However, looking the other way or covering up etc for wrong doing by a fellow officer should be treated as a crime, even if you do not report them. Which in this case seems no other officers knew.. If another did, they should also be prosecuted..

27 Always Right August 29, 2014 at 1:39 PM

Amazing how many people wrongly label the motives of all police officers based on the bad actions of a few.

I too object to their absurdly expensive pensions and their union’s undue influence on local politics, but Police officers in the field deserve our support for the work they do.

Most of them are outstanding people in their public and personal lives. They deserve respect, and they deserve our support.

28 no handle August 29, 2014 at 2:04 PM

Just wonder why this has taken nearly two weeks to make it into the news ?

Besides that, thank you, the police, you guys are doing a great job out here.

31 Elwood August 29, 2014 at 2:21 PM

Oh, great, he bailed out.

Not a danger to the community, I guess.

If it was you or I, do you think we would have been granted bail?

32 Officer Barbrady August 29, 2014 at 2:31 PM

It’s in my DNA to defend the cops, but this case makes it a little tough. More like impossible.

33 Cindy August 29, 2014 at 2:31 PM

Zip ties and guns in the vehicle……….. scarier! Sworn to serve and protect, sad. How many times has he done this before?

34 @ Always Right August 29, 2014 at 2:36 PM

Not all Muslims are bad… just most of them
And not all policemen are bad…just a tiny percentage.

39 Mari August 29, 2014 at 2:54 PM

He will lose his pension along with jail time. That’s for sure. He will be cared for in jail.

40 Sandy Eggo August 29, 2014 at 2:57 PM

Walking down the street at 2am in Richmond seems rather questionable. What was the lady really doing when he attacked her? Maybe his house had recently been targeted or vandalized and he was staking it out…? There is likely more to this story than what is being told….but regardless attacking the woman with a baseball bat definitely isn’t the answer and the mask thing seems rather odd.

41 Commuter August 29, 2014 at 3:05 PM

Sorry PO’d. He’ll get every dime of his pension. Watch and see.

42 Weird on Weird August 29, 2014 at 3:12 PM

One of the strangest stories I have ever read, proves Mom right, “nothing good happens after midnight” Why is this guy out on bail since he sounds like a potential serial killer? Why were these women out walking around at 2:00 am too?? There has got to be a lot more to this story, drug deal gone bad??? Can’t believe the media has not covered this more.

43 Cartman August 29, 2014 at 3:14 PM

46 J. August 29, 2014 at 3:40 PM

If I were a betting man I’d say the lady was a prostitute.

47 @ Sandy Eggo August 29, 2014 at 3:47 PM

Bet you are right…he had a house for sale near the area, so maybe she was a squatter/vandal he was stalking, not that that justifies his actions. T

48 sarah t August 29, 2014 at 4:07 PM

Zipties for a arrestoff duty maybe?
This is all terrible, who are we supposed to trust if not the police. This reminds me of the new story about the emts who arent licensed…its exhausting to ponder all this garbage. I personally don’t drive because of all this. After two cars got stolen I have nothing left, and also told I shouldnt take action
I walk everywhere. Its hard to tell who the criminals are anymore.

And yeah every city has its share and danville is the worst…

49 @ Mary..... August 29, 2014 at 4:15 PM

You just hijacked this thread so I guess that makes you a terrorist.
How can all Muslims be bad?? With that ignorant, hateful statement you are perpetuating a stereotype. All religions have their “nuts”. Catholics can be extremists, Mormons have their offshoot nut ball groups, even Christians can be zealots who preach hatred while espousing love. That is why our world is in such a mess.

50 the officer is a pimp on the side August 29, 2014 at 4:31 PM

and was just trying to collect some money from one of his girls.

51 Hey me its you August 29, 2014 at 4:36 PM

I’ve personally delt with officer Gregory Thompson of the WCPD dept. I can say without a doubt this guy is a shear pyschopath. I dont like cops in general, some are okay. I know for a fact he is a loose cannon. I cant wait to he looses his badge. I’d love to see him around, then we can have a nice little chat him and I, lmfao! See ya soon lil Gregy boi.

52 Dr. Doc PhD August 29, 2014 at 4:46 PM

Let the facts be borne and vetted before jumping to conclusions.

… if so you’re as good as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Your ilk?

53 Local Guy August 29, 2014 at 4:47 PM

But I’m sure all his arrests were legit and on the up and up.

54 anon August 29, 2014 at 5:06 PM

Too much pressure over the years. The job becomes too personal for some.

55 Michelle August 29, 2014 at 5:15 PM

Of course all of his arrests were legitimate!

It’s telling the certain commenters (always the same ones) make it about Muslims.

This cop is scum. And lately, we’ve seen more and more police abuses nationwide. This is a systemic issue.

65 Psshhh August 30, 2014 at 4:45 AM

Really? Did someone say love triangle? He had a murder kit in his car and was assaulting women. Sounds more like a serial killer was let out on bail. Great job.

66 Princes August 30, 2014 at 6:15 AM

Is so wrong how people label all Police Officers, criminals who have run into the police always have negative comments about them. Greg is the nicest person you ever meet, he has always done an amazing job in protecting us and so respectful. You don’t know the truth.
