BART Launching APP to Help Riders Report Crime, Suspicious Activity

August 28, 2014 · 20 comments

BART this morning launched a new app available for Apple and Android devices that will enable riders to more easily report crimes and suspicious activities to transit police.

BART Watch is free to download from the agency’s website www.bart.gov, as well as the Apple App Store and Google Play.

“This new technology will allow us to partner with our riders so they can ‘see something, say something’ and help us keep the system safer and more secure,” BART Police Chief Kenton Rainey said in a statement.

The app will also be offered in Spanish and Chinese. Riders will be able to use BART Watch to send a text message of what they are seeing. There is an option to attach a picture to the text message.

The app also allows riders to call BART police directly or send text reports anonymously.

In areas with no cellular service, a text message sent will be delivered once the rider goes to an area with service.

The app has pull-down menus that lets riders choose which report they want to send, including a crime in progress, an illegally parked
vehicle, disruptive behavior, a robbery or theft, an unattended bag or package and vandalism.

The reports will go directly to BART police dispatch to be prioritized for response.

BART police will also use the app to send alerts out to riders.

It’s an awesome idea!! To keep our communities safe

Can’t wait for my picture to pop up. They should make a Claycord like design to the app, so we could all throw in our two cents to any report….

Great idea. Much better than having to publicly contact the train operator from those crummy, Jack-in-th-box-style intercoms.

I’m going to call the cops on each of you little piggies eating your food on the train.

Critic of BART that I am, I have to say this is a great idea.

Will the APP automatically call a sergeant to approve the arrest

Great, it’s time for me to get my money’s worth out of BART. I hope they are ready to get reports about people blasting music, eating on BART and sleeping across two seats because I’m going to burn out my phone using this thing.

Good question Maria, I just checked the Bart website and they just said it was available in some locations. Then I went to the vendor’s site and they taut BART as their biggest project, so probably dead in the water.

@Mamba,

That is great and if everyone does that hopefully BART will designate resources to such crimes. Be sure to use it in the parking lot as well when you see people prowling cars.

Speaking of reporting crime…just started my new job in the city and have to take BART. A few days ago while walking to my car at Concord BART (approx 5pm), I realized the Ladies of the Evening (late afternoon) were making their rounds up and down the bus stops. Is this a regular thing??!! Hope not.

@#14:
So, were they hot?

Problem with neat apps like this is that they are often good on Apple and/or Android. If you don’t have either then you’re apt not to app…

It is all fun and games until someone calls the SWAT.

Swatting aside, the app seems a genuine attempt by BART to address their policing problems.

If I see a Chinese criminal do I report in Chinese?

And do not forget people urinating just like the dude was recently was arrested for urinating at the PH station.

Ladies of the Afternoon:
what did the lady look like? was she a 5.2 tall chubby mexican lady that claim she needed to go on BART because her husband threw her out? I asked because I was approach by a lady for money to get on BART to SF.
