The Water Cooler – Chicken Wars

August 27, 2014 · 83 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it!

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday in the noon hour.

Which one do you prefer? KFC, Popeyes or Chick-fil-A El Pollo Loco?

Talk about it….

none

2 android user August 27, 2014 at 12:06 PM

KFC

3 Enfield303 August 27, 2014 at 12:07 PM

I prefer my own special recipe bbq chicken. But if we are out and about, El Pollo Loco is preferred.

4 None of the Above August 27, 2014 at 12:11 PM

America is becoming “Fattycapped” from eating hormone GMO garbage. Just say no.

5 Broke in Colony Park August 27, 2014 at 12:12 PM

Pollo loco!!!

6 Caitlin August 27, 2014 at 12:13 PM

Never eaten at any of those places!

7 Lorrielovesparties August 27, 2014 at 12:15 PM

Chik Fil A hands down! I love their new Market Salad. In fact, I think I’ll go get one right now! I’ll never eat at KFC again. I used to have high school friends who worked their and learned, “their secrets.” One of which was to play basketball with the chicken and they would still put it in the batter after dropping it on the filthy floor.

8 Captain Bebops August 27, 2014 at 12:16 PM

KFC wasn’t so bad decades ago, I only ate Pollo Loco when there was one in Walnut Creek which closed. Never have eaten at the other two. Unfortunately to cut corners for more profit the quality of food is getting worse at establishments like this.

9 sam colvin August 27, 2014 at 12:17 PM

Its time fr a diet MR. MAYOR

10 Cuzzzzzzz........ August 27, 2014 at 12:22 PM

El Pollo Loco as it is grilled. I and my family do not eat fried foods

11 Maria August 27, 2014 at 12:24 PM

Pollo loco

12 trevor quinn August 27, 2014 at 12:25 PM

El Pollo Loco is Very Good. Love the Stuffed Quesadilla!!!

13 SKS August 27, 2014 at 12:33 PM

El Pollo Loco every time!

Well, cluck you too #4. Have you ever heard of freedom of choice?

14 Cowellian August 27, 2014 at 12:34 PM

I like each of them every now and then, but El Pollo Loco is my favorite among the three.

15 Anon777 August 27, 2014 at 12:43 PM

Don’t really care for chicken unless it’s Beer Butt on BBQ. Don’t like KFC, haven’t tried the others and probably won’t. I do like Wingstop, lemon pepper boneless strips.

16 Daniel August 27, 2014 at 12:46 PM

#14. There were actually four choices.

17 BagsFlyFree August 27, 2014 at 12:47 PM

Nola on Willow Pass has fried chicken that knocks these chains off hands down.

18 I don't eat fried chicken very often August 27, 2014 at 12:48 PM

but when I do, it’s from Whole Foods.

19 Seen it all August 27, 2014 at 12:54 PM

#7, You think that just happens at that one eatery?

20 Seen it all August 27, 2014 at 12:54 PM

Not for me.

21 Cowellian August 27, 2014 at 12:55 PM

Oh well!

22 Rich August 27, 2014 at 12:56 PM

El Pollo Loco

23 wc44 August 27, 2014 at 1:07 PM

Anyone who answers KFC or Popeye’s should be tracked down and have their voting rights eliminated.

24 CereBellum August 27, 2014 at 1:10 PM

Don’t particularly care for fast food(s), however, if I had to choose, it would probably be KFC.

25 Mr. Pink August 27, 2014 at 1:16 PM

I have not tried Popeye’s or Chick fil a

26 ClayDen August 27, 2014 at 1:19 PM

None of the above. My favorites are either from my BBQ grill or a jalapeno chicken enchilada from El Charro in Lafayette.

27 Melissa August 27, 2014 at 1:27 PM

Who’s going to break down and admit they went to Popeye’s? That place was packed since it opened; but the best place is my grill.

28 Silva August 27, 2014 at 1:36 PM

I’ve eaten KFC through the 90’s and went to El Pollo Loco once, about 6 or 7 years ago. I won’t be going to either of the others if I can help it!

29 NoneOFtheAbove August 27, 2014 at 1:36 PM

I prefer none of those. I prefer my cooking. I like my oven baked BBQ sauce chicekn, oven friend chicken or regular friend chicken and plain baked chicken. I think home cooking is healthier and I always by the organic free range chicken. Sooo good.

30 Cindy August 27, 2014 at 1:42 PM

Big No to Chik fil a, haven’t tried Popeye’s. El Pollo Loco……..good flavor, grilled. KFC good when I want a grease fest! Hahaha

31 Incognito August 27, 2014 at 1:48 PM

@ #7
If you knew half the crap that happens in restaurant kitchens…. you’d never eat out again.

32 dilligafman August 27, 2014 at 1:49 PM

My neighbors when they’re not looking. Fresh is best!

33 Concord Mike August 27, 2014 at 1:58 PM

Chick-fil-A is the best by far.

The one in walnut creek even has a nice indoor play structure for the kids.

Wish we had one closer to Clayton Road.

34 MadMom August 27, 2014 at 2:02 PM

#18 that was funny. I’ve only had KFC, but I think I want to try El Pollo Loco!

35 Tom August 27, 2014 at 2:03 PM

I haven’t eaten fast food since grad school. When my “twenty something” body could handle it.

I would probably like Popeye’s. Even more of a reason not to go. I might return on a regular basis.

36 Phoenyx August 27, 2014 at 2:05 PM

Boston Market… I can’t eat wheat… no fried chicken for me.

37 The Realist August 27, 2014 at 2:18 PM

ding ding! #31 wins.
It’s like russian roulette with my bungholio!
50% of the time I eat out I get the runs from food poisoning, improper food preparation/handling. So I quit eating out. I might have a weak stomach so those with cast iron stomachs would go unnoticed at the voracious amounts of bacteria in their food.
I’ve seen some horrors but the best was at the KFC in PH, standing in line to order, a couple people ahead of me, counter drone #2 fumbles a piece of chicken straight to the floor, picks it up (without even hesitating or brushing it off), puts it in the bag for a drive thru order. Like what they don’t see, won’t hurt them. A lady in line in front of me says “X’cuse ME, what RU doin’!?” Me and the rest of the people in line leave when she just ignored her and gave out the floor chicken to the drive thru order.

38 tired of taxes August 27, 2014 at 2:25 PM

KFC original recipe. But you have to also get the gravy. But ymmv on the gravy. The recipe is not consistent per branch or even per day.

And to wc44 @23, glad no one made you president you chicken nazi. :-)

39 Paleface August 27, 2014 at 2:28 PM

Neither.

40 Dorothy August 27, 2014 at 2:32 PM

None of them! They don’t do chicken tacos.

41 paranoid pablito August 27, 2014 at 2:40 PM

Based on the topic “Chicken Wars” I thought the question was going to be a little more exciting.

42 Meemo August 27, 2014 at 2:49 PM

El Pollo Loco. Tastes like real chicken and not deep-fried, cardboard-filled pink slime particle chicken like Popeye’s and Chick Flea. My favorite is Chicken and Waffle in Walnut Creek. But it is pretty expensive, so it has to be just a treat now and then.

43 Dutch August 27, 2014 at 2:56 PM

It used to be KFC (hands down) but the last few times I’ve had it (at different restaurants) it didn’t taste as good as it used to so now it’s Chic Fil La or Lucky’s fried chicken.

44 The Closer August 27, 2014 at 2:57 PM

@Dorothy

El Pollo Loco gives you tortillas so you can make your own soft tacos.

Apparently half the posters cannot read or comprehend a simple multiple choice question. You have four companies to choose from , or just say none of the above.

@#23

Maybe your voting rights should be eliminated because you can’t answer a simple question.

For me, I like El Pollo Loco for their grilled chicken and their side dishes.

45 Marianne August 27, 2014 at 2:59 PM

What’s with the wars about fried chicken. I don’t eat fried chicken anyway, baked or oven sauteed are the best way to prepare any foods, of course grilled. Either way I will have mine

46 Moneypenny August 27, 2014 at 3:12 PM

I worked for KFC as a teenager back in the late 70’s. I know how they prepare it. I don’t know the 7 secret herbs and spices but I prefer this fast food chicken to any other. Delicious!!!!

47 Mary August 27, 2014 at 3:18 PM

I don’t eat chicken because killing helpless birds and eating their flesh is barbaric.

48 JRConcord August 27, 2014 at 3:21 PM

I make the world’s best freakin fried chicken.
mix up bread crumbs, use fresh grated then chopped Parmesan cheese, Romano cheese, garlic powder, coarse pepper, red pepper, paprika, mustad powder, coarse salt little bit of oregano. Bam!
. you bread the chicken.then fry till golden brown, medium hi heat. three and a half four minutes a side. you place on a baking pan and let it bake for 30 minutes at 350.

49 ChampagneKitty August 27, 2014 at 3:35 PM

I’ve never had any of the ones listed except KFC, and I haven’t been to KFC in a long time. I do like fried chicken, but don’t eat it very often. Besides being bad for you, too much of it aggravates my acid reflux disorder. When I do have it, I get it at one of the restaurants I like to eat at, such as the Buttercup Grill and Bar.

50 anon August 27, 2014 at 3:41 PM

El Pollo for me. Haven’t tried the new Popeye’s on Clayton yet but it sure looks popular.

51 The Mamba August 27, 2014 at 3:54 PM

I’ve never had El Pollo Loco, but someone brought a bucket of KFC to a wine and cheese party one time and I hate to admit it but it hit the spot.

52 Tara Firma August 27, 2014 at 3:59 PM

Popeye’s!! and Buffalo Wild Wings. Never been to Chic-fil-a, do not like KFC. El Pollo Loco is ok. And I don’t like Wingstop.

Winco and Luckys have a really good fried chicken. Not a fan of safeways chicken.

53 Seen it all August 27, 2014 at 4:24 PM

Incognito #31,That’s my problem. I’ve worked in too many restaurants to really want to eat out ever again. Sometimes I must do it to humor someone important or special, but I can’t enjoy it anymore.

54 Ben August 27, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Popeyes

55 WTF August 27, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Like we care about your 1. High cholesterol 2. Expanding waistlines or 3. Acid reflux for God’s sake!!!

Oh, sorry, I forgot to vote: Chic-fil-A, because it’s made by Christians, not crispy-ians ⊙.○

56 Silva August 27, 2014 at 4:27 PM

JRConcord, Oh my, that sounds wonderful!

57 Anon, too August 27, 2014 at 4:55 PM

Popeye’s, and for those who’ve prejudged, now’s your chance to actually try it. They’re open.

58 Teacher Wannabe August 27, 2014 at 5:36 PM

Popeye’s. Nothing else need be said.

59 NoMoreFreeRide August 27, 2014 at 5:40 PM

Chick-Fil-A and Pollo Loco

60 mika August 27, 2014 at 7:28 PM

Isn’t Popeye’s really spicy?

64 caskydiver August 27, 2014 at 8:57 PM

KFC..love the extra crispy….especially paired w/ the A&W root beer.

65 PhilthyPHRESH August 27, 2014 at 9:25 PM

I like my chicken cloned by Popeyes. Bring back po boys. Holla.

66 Jacks in PH August 27, 2014 at 9:31 PM

Jack’s in Pleasant Hill

67 J Frank August 27, 2014 at 9:42 PM

Wingstop, though it’s not listed

68 frenchdog August 27, 2014 at 9:45 PM

When the owls say who , they mean him . He’s the most interesting chicken in the world , stay hungry my friends ……

69 Dr. Jellyfinger® August 27, 2014 at 11:40 PM

Mika – Popeye’s gives you a choice of mild OR spicy.

You know…. I have to admit I’ve never tied El Pollo Loco. I dunno why… I just never go to the shopping center there with the Food Max & all…. I guess I’ll have to try it, just to be fair. Expect a report soon.

70 Lockness August 27, 2014 at 11:46 PM

Chick-fil-A

71 anon August 27, 2014 at 11:56 PM

#7 it isn’t kfc’s practice to do this to the food. It’s the worker’s who do it that haven’t been caught.
I’ve been line cook at fine dining for over ten years. I haven’t seen anything this horrendous but stuff goes on everywhere. And at places like this where they are not professionals, but kids wanting money you will find this.

72 anon August 28, 2014 at 12:21 AM

I requested this topic to see why people liked their favorite chix place. And to find out if Popeye’s really is all that great. But I guess I’ll just wait till the novelty dies down there, then try it.

Meemo, that’s exactly the kind of info I was looking for. descriptive.

I appreciate the encouragement to eat healthy and stay away from fast foods too. that’s where i would like to be ideally. it’s true though about being single and preparing meals.

I’ll have to try chic filet.
Around here, el pollo loco is my fav. except after eating it i’m having to clear my throat for the next couple hours. so makes me wonder.
My alltime fav for ready to eat chix. is sprout’s roasted. it’s more natural, and tastes best. I don’t like the seasoning of safeway’s too much. costco is good but i’m not a member. Foodmaxx is my next choice, ie. size and flavor then Lucky’s.

as far as the killer homeade fried chix maybe that’s a good idea for a claycord picnic.

73 anon August 28, 2014 at 12:24 AM

oh… i think it would be nice if all fast food restaurants were operated like in n out. have you ever seen a place so consistent, polite, professional, clean?
well habit is pretty good too.

74 Antler August 28, 2014 at 1:00 AM

It’s a RARE treat, but I always have enjoyed the Original recipe, dark-meat-only fried chicken at the KFC on Clayton Road.

The last time I was at El Pollo Loco, the chicken tasted as though the grill needed to be cleaned. And it was indeed greasy, almost as though they were mopping the surface with vegetable oil. I’ll of course try it again because previously it was delicious.

Dr. Jellyfinger (Trademarked…..”By Appointment of Her Royal Majesty” pending….Her Royal Highness??? ….how does that go?), Thanks for letting us know that Popeye’s is offering a selection of spice level. Maybe I’ll need to withdraw my complaint that the batter has too much black pepper in it… just for my taste.

ChampagneKitty, I have seen a plate of Buttermilk Grill and Bar’s fried chicken come out, and it looked and smelled delicious!

Wheat intolerant….. Have you tried making a corn meal batter?

Health Foodies of the World …. I would like to announce that my recipe for oven fried chicken is not only fabulous, but it is made using a lot of Kerrygold salt-free butter. I’m sure it is probably as high in calories as any restaurant fried chicken. I use skinless thighs and breasts, but the recipe actually calls for leaving the skin on. Moral of the story is that baking does not kill calories, so mind your recipe!

OK, Mayor. You’ve gone and done it. One in the morning, and I want some fried chicken sooooooooooo bad! ;-)

75 Marissa August 28, 2014 at 1:04 AM

if I had to pick any of them it would be el pollo loco, the crazy chicken! Grilled to perfection and tossed over and over until it’s done! Nothing better than that.

76 Vandy August 28, 2014 at 7:26 AM

All of these restaurants peddle factory farmed chicken. They hide disgusting secrets that go way beyond dropping food on the floor. The chickens are tortured, not raised. They are squeezed into disease-filled dark and dense environments. They must be pumped full of antibiotics to be kept alive. They have poorly-developed muscles and are lacking in nutrients due to their poor health. Unneeded chicks are ground alive into feed for other animals. Its hideous. They to this so that you can buy a big bucket of fatty cholesterol death for close to nothing. Do a small amount of research and you’ll never want to eat at these places again. If you really want chicken then get a free-range cage-free chicken raised on an organic farm. You can get these from a farmers market or Whole Foods. You will pay a lot more but totally worth it. You can taste the difference and you avoid supporting the factory farm nightmare.

77 THEM WINGS THO August 28, 2014 at 8:36 AM
78 Dr. Jellyfinger® August 28, 2014 at 8:57 AM

So Vandy,…. they throw live chickens into the grinder feathers & all?

Antler, the trademark “®” has actually proved useless. Imposters still post ridiculous comments using my name with no fear of reprisal. Being the victim of imposters does however provide me plausible deniability, if I actually post something so stupid that I later regret it. So it’s not all bad.

79 Antler August 28, 2014 at 10:07 AM

Dr. Jellyfinger, R., at #78 ……. Is there any way to type the trademark symbol using an iPad? I have already tried pressing down on the alphabet letters and sliding upward to select other symbols or accented letters ….. nothing.

Re your jaunt to Popeye’s: Did you order the mild version of fried chicken? And if so, did it still have a lot of black pepper in it?

80 Vandy August 28, 2014 at 11:35 AM

@Jellyfinger. Yes live chicks are thrown into grinders, feathers and all. There are videos. Just google “chicks ground alive”. Its horrific.

81 Cat Wrangler August 28, 2014 at 3:43 PM

@Mary – I agree!

82 D.V Guy August 28, 2014 at 8:59 PM

Popeyes vs. KFC = Popeyes.( except for pot pies) Never had real chicken at Chick-fil-a just some OK sandies, if I want a chicken sandie I’ll go to Bake sale Betty’s
Pollo Loco has a great menu for grilled fast food chicken.

83 Dr. Jellyfinger® August 28, 2014 at 11:12 PM

Antler – I don’t know…. I just copy & paste things like that. I always order the “mild” chicken (not at all spicy). They probably just gave you the spicy style by mistake last time.

Vandy….. that’s awful. I doubt they were using the chicks for animal feed tho, probably just did it for cheep kicks.
