BART Equipment Problem Shuts Down Service Near Pleasant Hill BART

August 26, 2014 17:40 pm · 40 comments

An equipment problem is disrupting BART service between the Walnut Creek and Concord stations this evening, a dispatcher for the agency said.

The problem was reported at about 5:15 p.m. near the Pleasant Hill station and has trains stopped in both directions along the Pittsburg-Bay Point line, the dispatcher said.

No other information about the incident was immediately available from BART.

On BART right now, they’re saying over the speaker that it is a train derailment.

Pittsburg August 26, 2014 at 5:54 PM

Im glad i didnt go on bart today

jules August 26, 2014 at 5:54 PM

Yes, my son is on the train right now as well, and this is what he was told.

Lari August 26, 2014 at 5:55 PM

So glad I’m on vacation this week!

joanie August 26, 2014 at 5:56 PM

I left financial district at 5:09 and we are stuck and still haven’t made it to Lafayette station. Don’t get on bart if you are still in SF!

Trains are sporadic at best stopped train at Orinda indefinitely. Dispatch says derailment with track damage.

Crap, I’m at Rockridge, so far so good.

Melissa August 26, 2014 at 6:08 PM

So glad I didn’t stop for that drink after work tonight!

Can the helicopters stop talking pictures of the dam train. Go away we know what they looked like stopped. Thanks New crews go find something interesting to see.

Kai August 26, 2014 at 6:13 PM

Finally got on a train at MacArthur…after waiting for 40 mins. Thanks BART for a terrible commute.

Mike August 26, 2014 at 6:21 PM

I’m on Bart… There has been more and better info here than from Bart itself or (god forbid) the Chron. Thanks Mayor.

They are now saying half the trains are going through, half being turned back. there will a bus bridge from Concord and WC. They say debris on track.

MeCrazyWoman August 26, 2014 at 6:27 PM

My husband got dumped in Rockridge about a half hour ago. No information provided, everyone had to exit. I understand things happen, but the communication from BART sucks. Their advisory on was vague. Still is. He is in a cab now.

I wish BART did more for people when they have to cut service. At least advise if you are better off waiting for a train or getting a cab.

Two copters over PH BART. YVR westbound very slow. I would guess Treat is worse. Should I walk over and have a look? Maybe I’ll be on TV!

Maria August 26, 2014 at 6:38 PM

That answers my question about the helicopters! So annoyingly loud though.

This is what happens after BART does maintenance on the weekends, train derailments and delays every day. BART IS SUCH A JOKE!

Yes, BART loves to leave people stranded with no way to get home, particularly when some douche bag jumps in front of a train which happens once a week now. BART especially loves to do this at midnight.

Jojo Potato August 26, 2014 at 6:42 PM

Westbound BART train just went from PH to WC. Good luck commuters. BTW, was that the $48m crossover between these two stations which has never been put into service where the accident occurred? The neighbors (me) would like to know after putting up with all the construction.

Boy, I lucked out! We were held a few minutes at Pleasant Hill but made it to Concord at 5:10, and then they announced service would be delayed because of “a train being taken out of service.” I guess it was more than that.

2 1/2 days later………

SZ August 26, 2014 at 7:23 PM

We were forced out at the WC station around 5:20ish. Then everyone made a mad scramble to all of the… 4 taxis waiting. I finally got ahold of a family member to pick me up an hour later but I told them to meet me at the target parking lot because traffic was at a standstill entering the station. And what is up with people laying on the horn when it’s obvious everyone is stuck and no one can move? Do they think blasting their horn will magically lift them up over all the other cars? I hate Bart and I hate how ugly humans can get in such situations.

N California South Closed by WCPD. People and Busses Picking Up, Clog The Street. The “Bus Bridge” is Stuck in The Traffic Jam. From WC BART , at 7:25. It’s Getting Better, but Still a Mess. Very Few Cabs. People Cab Sharing. One Track Trains.

Anon August 26, 2014 at 7:42 PM

Total chaos! Got dumped out at Lafayette and told to take alternate transportation- so helpful. The agents had no idea if or when bus service may arrive. while waiting around outside we were told that service would resume but only to WC. Packed back into a train and after 15 minutes were told the train was going out of service. Again went outside and stood around waiting for any direction when a few people said the trains were starting up. No Bart staff were making any annoucements so the majority of those waiting stayed outside. Got on and the annoucement was that the train would only go to WC. Right before arriving at WC they announced that the train would go all the way to North Concord. Then at PH they announed that the train would go all the way to Pittsburg. Too bad for all the hundreds of people that stayed at WC.

Bubbles August 26, 2014 at 7:51 PM

$hit happens people. A wheel broke on one of the trains and it dug into the trackway. If it’s so great sitting in your car in traffic do that! I ride BART everyday and don’t have problems very often. I know it’s

Anon August 26, 2014 at 8:01 PM

Oops -meant to say too bad for all the folks that stayed at Lafayette.

Gilbert August 26, 2014 at 8:09 PM

I’m with ya SZ. My wife got stuck too and I picked her up at Target. But no honking or hollering from me. Oh Bart, you are really awful. You’ve sure done it this time!

Elwood August 26, 2014 at 8:11 PM

Did a sergeant come to approve the wreck?

Or at least a border collie?

There is still a delay.

There is a 15 to 20-minute delay on the Pittsburg/Bay Point Line, in the Pittsburg / Bay Point and SFO directions due to an equipment problem on the track.

Marianne August 26, 2014 at 8:57 PM

As usual, there’s always some issue with Bart.

ale August 26, 2014 at 8:57 PM

Two hours to get from berkeley to concord.

grewah August 26, 2014 at 9:18 PM

Got on BART at Montgomery @ 4:59. Got stopped at Rockridge, operator was honest. He had not idea why we were stopped. We were told the train would terminate at Walnut Creek. Got to Layfayette, was told the train ahead of us was out of service and would run sweeper. Got to WC and were told we would get to Pleasant Hill. Folks on the platform told us to get off the train, PH was closed. I figured as long as we were going eastbound I was staying on. Got to PH and were told “this train is going to Pittsburg/Baypoint”, To cheers from those of us left on the train. Got to Concord. Heard that they were holding eastbound at PH. I felt very lucky.
I felt for the people in line for the bus bridge to WC.
Now I just wonder about the fact they did not scan my ticket leaving tonight. I am sure tomorrow they will tell me my ticket is illegal and confiscated. Which will likely get me arrested since it is a brand new $60 blue ticket lol

grewah August 26, 2014 at 9:21 PM

Forgot to mention I was lucky cuz I got Concord at 6:15, given the chaos, I will not complain about an hour and fifteen ride.

Cat Wrangler August 26, 2014 at 9:21 PM

BART needs a Consumer Warning System for their Equipment Failure. .

MeCrazyWoman August 26, 2014 at 9:35 PM

Bubbles, the problem is the communication
BART dumped people at stations and provided no information.

I’m concerned about BART service for Wednesday am. Any idea if it will be running by 6 am??

Johanna M Glenn August 27, 2014 at 12:00 AM

I have been riding BART now for some 27 years so I am a seasoned traveller. The total lack of communication between BART employees this evening during the shut down of BART left me (and many others) feeling unappreciated. We are your loyal customers. I can fend for myself but, as I looked around, I saw a mentally challenged person and a young adult wondering what to do. SHAME, SHAME on BART officials not to have a back-up plan in place. I shudder to think what would happen if this was an earthquake. Please Claycord, do your best to expose this situation. Perhaps riders need to grab the bull by the horns and make their own alternative plans. Did this during BART strike and me and my colleagues survived.

The Mamba August 27, 2014 at 7:20 AM

I hate BART so much, I can’t believe I pay $13 everyday and things like yesterday happen. So frustrating after a long day at work.

ale August 27, 2014 at 8:16 AM

In the entire two hours I spent on bart not one announcement was made to us about the situation. Thats a problem. As we were stuck in Pleasant Hill for 30 minutes after being told to get off trains kept coming in with no indication of destination. It was bizarre.

if I would have known how long the delays were I would have had my husband pick me up in lafayette.
