Claycord – Talk About Whatever

Happy Friday to all the wonderful citizens in the City of Claycord.

This is a post with no subject, you can talk about whatever you want. If breaking news happens (such as an earthquake), or you hear about something newsworthy, feel free to post it here.

Sheriff’s helicopter circling the mall: anybody know why? (7:00 p.m.).

13 K August 22, 2014 at 7:05 PM

Anyone know why a helicopter is circling by the mall area?

14 Conmom August 22, 2014 at 7:09 PM

Evening… Since it’s early in the thread, I have a few things on my mind… Let’s talk about it!

– I lost my house and had to surrender my dog and I am feeling so guilty/sad and depressed lately. I want to know if there is any way I can find out if he was adopted and if I could find the new owners just so I could visit, my living situation changed again and I would love to see him again. I feel I can never allow myself to have another animal because of this shame I feel.

– my kid started CV last week and would like to know if anyone has any secret drop off spots- that traffic is killing me. Or where can I buy a bus pass?

-last but not least I can’t find the “best of claycords” dentist list. Gma is looking for a new one. She had one for years and he died, found a new one and he just died, jesh! She is in central Concord so that would be ideal!

-thanks neighbors

Glad that you got plenty of help with the branch that fell down.

we should find out on Claycord about the helicopter circling around the SVM.

I am glad the giants won tonight!!!!!!!!

I just a movie “Adventure of Babysitting” a classical 80’s comedy, Action and Crime movie. Homeless are saying “Get out of my house” because they were living in the pay phone. lol I also like the part when the gal was waiting for her ride to be picked at the bus station, she was without a glasses and thought it was a kitty but it was a ratt. lol I like Sara the little girl with the horn hat with the roller skate. some guys thought she was in the playboy magazine lol.

Oddly, that new Popeye’s on Clayton has classed up Concord a little. That spot looks a heck of a lot better now than when it was a vacant lot, and a heck of a lot better than the old 7-11 / mini impound yard combo. I won’t be eating there, but ¡ VIVA LA POPEYE’S !

Gov. Jerry Brown — owner of Sutter, California’s “first dog” and an adorable Welsh corgi to boot — has signed into law a bill making it perfectly legal to bring your dog out to dinner with you. (No word yet on whether the governor and Sutter are planning a night out to celebrate.)

Here’s the fine print: the dog must remain in an outdoor-dining section, be on a leash, behave, and not be in the same area where food is being prepared.

The law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, should provide some relief to dog lovers statewide, including owners who’ve been bringing their pets to restaurants for years and patrons who, in the eyes of the law, have been illegally allowing it.

“Hmm,” said David Wiesner, chef/owner of Siena Bistro in Willow Glen, who for years has had a very pro-pooch patio policy on Thursday nights. “The law going into effect in January is the law that I thought was already in effect. This won’t get me into trouble, will it?”

Wiesner has plenty of company among Californians long under the impression that dining in public with Fido was perfectly kosher. Until recently, according to an employee, the pet-crazy Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar in Concord would allow mutts at mealtime until some heartless anti-dog diners complained.

The new law overturns a prohibition on pets at restaurants and allows the practice at the discretion of the business. But it also allows cities and counties to still impose local restrictions on dogs dining out.

As a member of Local 1 – Public employee union – I stand with Kaiser nurses. I visit Kaiser twice a month and if I’m inconvenienced by corporate Kaiser not willing to pay fair wages while grossing millions in profits then my healthcare can wait. Everyone deserves a fair wage and benefits.

As it stands now my employer is spending $400,000 of our rate payers hard earned dollars on a “staffing needs assessment” to find cost saving measures. When the employees asked to do the cost savings analysis in house the response from the new General Manager was “the rate payer wouldn’t believe the results.” Wtf does that mean?

I don’t have a problem with Kaiser nurses, but I can’t support their labor actions. Nor that of unionized teachers, firefighters, or BART workers. The only recent picketers that get a hoot and a holler from me are the maids and janitors. Why? Because they are the only ones that are not already making TWO OR THREE TIMES what I am. So go ahead, Kaiser nurses. You went to school, you’re job is important, and you want some of those millions that your bosses make. But this ain’t “Grapes of Wrath”. It’s the well to do fighting with the filthy rich and expecting sympathy from the poor.

(Many thanks to my neighbor)

44 How much does a nurse make? August 23, 2014 at 8:12 AM

Is it true that nurse’s make up to $160,000 per year with overtime.

Close to $100,000 on a 40 hr work week.

45 How much does a registered nurse make? August 23, 2014 at 8:47 AM

It depends on where you live, and what kind of nurse. Assuming you mean an RN, which is a registered nurse, and she has her Bachelorette Degree , here is a list of some states average salaries:

* California: $80,000
* Florida: $70,000
* Texas: $71,000
* Pennsylvania: $70,000
* Georgia: $65,000
* New York: $70,000
* Tennessee: $65,000

nurse anesthestis usually make the most money…here is an estimate for a few states:

* California: $100,000
* Florida: $105,000
* Texas: $112,500
* Pennsylvania: $105,000
* Illinois: $100,000
* Georgia: $108,000
* North Carolina: $110,000

So basically, that’s a lot. Also, we have several sign on bonuses and get bonuses all the time. If you work Sundays for example, you get a bonus. the longer you stay in one place, the more you will make. also, many nurses only work 3, maybe 4 days a week and make that amount.

46 Jojo Potato August 23, 2014 at 8:52 AM

WC council elections declared over. Cindy Silva and her pet Rich Carlston get elected. The other potential challenger, Matthew DeLima had his application for candidacy rejected due to signatures from outside the city limits. So Cindy is in for a third time and will keep things under her tight control. Mr. Carlston is a long time city insider having served as chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and current board member and a member of the board of the library foundation, he will follow orders as required. Taxpayers should be prepared to pony up more cash to pay for downtown projects including more money to be wasted on the world’s most beautiful (empty) library. At least the local homeless will continue to have a nice place to hangout and it will likely be open for more hours too!

47 Anon August 23, 2014 at 9:34 AM

How much are the nurses making per hour anyway?

48 Clayton Squirrel August 23, 2014 at 9:48 AM

Kaiser is a not for profit health care corporation. There are no big corporate profits. It’s not a publicly traded corporation.

Most of the folks who work there do so because they agree with the mission to try to bring more and better healthcare to more people. The folks who I know who work for Kaiser (not nurses) put in long hours to keep things running smoothly. There’s a lot of community outreach to schools and such as well.

I’m not sure what the nurses there get paid (I’m sure it’s competitive since they rarely strike) but don’t lump Kaiser in with corporate healthcare for profit companies.

49 Killjoy August 23, 2014 at 10:33 AM

Actually, Kaiser nurses were on strike a few years ago. I went out and took photos. I believe the Mayor posted some of them here.

I’m planning on opening a cockroach restaurant soon. My concept will be cockroaches. Guest can bring their pet cockroaches with them while they eat. I’m also going to have cockroaches running all over the food in the kitchen.

54 dirty August 23, 2014 at 11:57 AM

They were just debating dogs at restaurants on the radio.

A guest said dogs have peed and pooped on the restaurant patios, and the restaurant staff had to clean it up. Also, many guests have allergies to dogs and will complains. And some dogs shed crazilly. So dog hair will blow all over the food when it’s windy. Plus, do you want to sit next to a pitbull while to eat, or a super large dog??

Soon, businesses will wisen up after customer complaints each day, and will ban all dogs from restaurant patios.

55 Silva August 23, 2014 at 12:05 PM

I’ve been enrolled with Kaiser since my mid 20’s (long time) and I’ve been there for plenty of nurses strikes. I believe in fair and livable wages. It’s been a long while since I’ve made one though. I’m with Wimpy on this one.

Bob, Those are great tips. Thanks.

Was mentioned that a dentist near the center of Concord would be best because it’s a shorter ride for an elderly person.

My favorite dentist’s office is at the intersection of Willow Pass Rd. and Parkside Avenue. You enter the parking lot of the small medical center on Parkside…. (across Parkside from the big “City of Concord” sign). The dentist is Dr. Matt Liutaud (pronounced lee-OH-toe). His entire excellent staff stayed with him since the previous dentist, Dr. Bonnie Light (another fine dentist with a super-friendly personality) retired to Hawaii some 10 years ago.

62 Antler August 23, 2014 at 2:59 PM

I cannot speak highly enough of the outstanding Registered Nurses at John Muir’s Walnut Creek campus. Their knowledge and their care of me was superior, and I could tell they and the physicians truly respected and relied upon one another’s opinions and follow-through.

Someone here on Whatever thread commented to the effect that the RN’s made too much money for only working several days a week. Be aware that their shifts are 12-hours long on the days they do work! Also be aware that the hospital does NOT pay for the nurses’ uniforms or for their work shoes!

On my own discharge day, the main “case physician” and the main “ward RN” came to see me together to wish me goodbye and to ask what ideas I had to guide them in better care for patients. I had no complaints about medical matters or compassionate care. So I only mentioned that if the different types of nurses/physicians/aides would be dressed in COLOR-coded uniforms/smocks, etc., then patients would know of whom to ask what, and the patient would realize what sort of thing was about to happen the moment someone entered the room ….both things being reassuring to a sedated patient dealing with pain. My physician was nodding head and taking notes. I added that there was one RN on the ward who wore the true nurse’s whites….the nursing school graduate’s specific starched cap, the pristine uniform, the whole bit. I added that I really liked uniforms and felt reassured by them… that a RN deserved the added respect from colleagues. Also because a RN can then be recognized as such from even a distance (you wouldn’t have to squint to read the name embroidered on a blouse or smock). The physician was nodding vigorously. That’s when the RN explained to me that the hospital does not require such a uniform code because if that requirement is in the contract, then the hospital must pay for the uniforms and the uniform upkeep. The physician merely said, “She is correct.” And then small talk and hugs goodbye.

So all that is by way of reassuring you that from ER care …. on through care during admission .. through testing and/or procedures….through care “upstairs in your room”, you are in trained, experience-honed care.

*** Because of terms potentially set by your medical insurance company, please remember to tell the ER physician that you need to be admitted “as a patient”…. not admitted “for observation”. (That done…and ask anyone presenting forms for you to sign to make sure the classification is correct……. then should you need to stay in hospital more than three days, your post-discharge insurance coverage for related short-term or long-term care is assured.)

I do support higher pay and better working conditions for nurses.

63 Jerk August 23, 2014 at 3:54 PM

Sheesh – I should Not have to remember all of that while going to ER in an emergency situation.

*** Because of terms potentially set by your medical insurance company, please remember to tell the ER physician that you need to be admitted “as a patient”…. not admitted “for observation”. Nurses, good ones anyway, save more lives and ease more suffering than doctors. I hold them in high regard and generally support efforts to improve their lot Union or not. But I will cross a hospital picket line, because if I’m at a hospital at all it’s serious sh*t for someone I care about or me, and I won’t abide any lack of access.

There is a very inconsiderate group of individuals at the Nancy Boyd Park in Martinez using remote control cars on the infield of the youth softball field. The field is clearly marked signs which state that the field is limited to use only for softball and youth 12 years and younger. The amount of dust and debris that is being stirred up and carried away by the breeze is destroying the infield and causing a large breathing hazard. Please be considerate at our community parks! This little field was lovingly made by the little church and community to help children not amuse bored adults and their toys.

There is a group at the Clayton Community Park riding their mini motorcycle right over the infield and stirring up dust to be carried away by the wind. This is destructive to the youth fields that were lovingly made by the community. Why is it OK to selfishly destroy them just because you and your group want to play with toys? Play with them on the paved areas – don’t destroy the ballfields!

The coach had put together the perfect team for the Chicago Bears. The only thing that was missing was a good quarterback. He had scouted all the colleges and even the Canadian and European Leagues, but he couldn’t find a ringer who could ensure a Super Bowl win.
Then one night while watching CNN he saw a war-zone scene in the West Bank. In one corner of the background, he spotted a young Israeli soldier with a truly incredible arm. He threw a hand-grenade straight into a 5th story window 100 yards away.
He threw another hand-grenade 75 yards away, right into a chimney.
Then he threw another at a passing car going 90 mph.
“I’ve got to get this guy!” the Coach said to himself. “He has the perfect arm!”
So, he brings him to the States and teaches him the great game of football. And the Bears go on to win the Super Bowl.
The young man is hailed as the great hero of football, and when the coach asks him what he wants, all the young man wants is to call his mother.
“Mom,” he says into the phone, “I just won the Super Bowl!”
“I don’t want to talk to you,” the old woman says. “You are not my son!”
“I don’t think you understand, Mother,” the young man pleads. “I’ve won the greatest sporting event in the world. I’m here among thousands of my adoring fans.”
“No! Let me tell you!” his mother retorts. “At this very moment, there are gunshots all around us. The neighborhood is a pile of rubble. Your two brothers were beaten within an inch of their lives last week and I have to keep your sister in the house so she doesn’t get raped!”
The old lady pauses, and then tearfully says, “I will never forgive you for making us move to Chicago!”

He has a grey collar and it has a 25-30″ steel chain attached, the other end is in shreds.

Hope to find the owner soon. This pup needs to get home.

Book report: I’m just finishing up “IBM and the Holocaust”, Edwin Black. Not light reading but fascinating. Tracks the relationship between the corporation and the Nazis. Did you ever wonder how the Germans were able to track down all the Jews? One reason is because IBM had provided punched card machines and analysts to set up sophisticated census information. This all started in the early 1930’s and continued throughout most of the war. IBM never sold any machines. They leased them including analysts to set up the required applications. When it came time to round up Jews in a certain city the applications were ready and the cards would spit out the names and addresses of the desired victims.

Very scary stuff, but consider this. In 1940 IBM ran the US census using these same techniques. In 1942 when our government wanted to round up Japanese Americans it was a breeze. The IBM machines were able to spit out names and addresses in a very short time. With the amazing increase in data on citizens since then it really gets scary. I know we all think we have nothing to hide but when the government decides to select out some group they will now be able to do it in milliseconds. Cheers.

155 Silva August 26, 2014 at 6:26 PM

Jojo potato, That’s horrifying. Sounds pretty interesting though. Was it well written? Did it suck you in without having to plod through? Engrossing rather than dry?

156 Jojo Potato August 26, 2014 at 6:58 PM

@Silva : Very well written, especially the details about the Jew selection and railroad scheduling and different types of camps that they were sent to. The point is, this was not a haphazard operation. All organized and operated with IBM machines set up by IBM trained employees. But I guess you have to want to read these sorts of things. Most of this is focused on the mass extermination, sometimes the huge numbers are numbing but you get brought back to the individuals from time to time.

Concord Community Pool IS open this week for Recreational Public swim until 4pm (based on minimum attendance of 30 swimmers.) I believe if this were better promoted, more people would be out swimming! Temps are in the 90s. For most school children, Wednesdays are an early dismissal. I took three children to the pool today and this photo shows how empty the pool was. An after school trip IS possible. Would have loved to see this promoted on more local news sites. Such a beautiful pool in Concord, CA. Phone Concord Community Pool to confirm open times: (925) 671-3474 for Thursday and Friday.

Shasta Daisy at #185 ……

May I suggest that during the oral questioning to determine your suitability as a jurist, you might try looking “1960’s vague” and speaking of your concerns about nodding off during testimony because Neptune is getting near the moon and you must be awake all night making certain observations. “Oh, yes, Sir. It IS required or else Karma will cause an earthquake in the Sonoma Valley this month.” If you sense that is not working, inquire nicely whether a jurist is permitted to take quantities of Rx mood elevators in order to stay awake during testimony. ;-)

Believe it or not, I have heard some pretty similar stories from people who, unlike you, were slimy enough to want to shirk civil duty! On a couple of occasions ….one being the professional knife sharpener who begged to be excused because he was facing the busiest time of year when hunting season was getting ready to open and his regular-client hunters needed their knives sharpened. The examining attorney that day was hard-pressed to keep a straight face; he was standing back-to the judge, but his expression made prospective jurists giggled. The judge slammed his gavel, reprimanded us, and VERY unfortunately ordered us to “maintain proper respectful decorum or I will order Bailiff to remove you from this courtroom!!!” (Oooooooo…. honestly, your honor! You should have known better because MOST of them WANTED to be removed!) The young man on my right bit down through his sweater into his forearm and hid his face in his lap. There was nose-laughing (you know, that funny sound that comes out when you try so hard NOT to laugh?) Bailiff, ostensibly so as to be ready to leap at the first offender, also had his back to the judge and had to tuck his chin in tightly and clamp his lips closed. It was one of the most gloriously AWFUL moments I have ever experienced.

All of which is to cheer you up a little bit because serving on a jury really does change your life for awhile. Thank you for stepping up. Everyone should.

195 JRConcord August 28, 2014 at 6:37 AM

@DR Jellyfinger
ahhemmm..cough….I see you just redefined “finger lickin good”. :-)

196 Silva August 28, 2014 at 7:04 AM

Love that photo, Atticus Thraxx.

197 Silva August 28, 2014 at 7:40 AM

Oh Atticus Thraxx, It must be my glasses which need replacing, but who was that previous lad? I didn’t see his name anywhere. was it Jerry Lewis?

198 Dr. Jellyfinger® August 28, 2014 at 8:44 AM

No dice! I just found out I can no longer do that. I’m back to KY. Seems the cats & dogs like Popeye’s chicken too & patients have reported aggressive sniffing & licking after exams. They’re asking me what the hell I did to them…… I’m going to be Presidential & claim I don’t know anything about it.

199 Shasta Daisy August 28, 2014 at 9:18 AM

Got here shortly before 8:00 and was lucky enough to find free parking in the lot behind the Bray building. All checked in and sitting here with all my new friends. I am behind in reading my Science News magazine, so I have 3 issues to read today.

I have served on a jury before and I wouldn’t mind be selected again. Sitting here waiting is the most difficult. I am a “mover” not a “sitter.” Especially when the sun is shining!

Forgot my Bluetooth to listen to music, oh well.

Have a good day and share that beautiful smile of yours with someone.

200 Killjoy August 28, 2014 at 12:18 PM

GoGo and I are busy cleaning. Our boss picked up a couple of Vidmars (at my urging). They were refurbished, but the insides need a good cleaning.
Once that’s all done, we can start organizing all the little parts and pieces that have five different locations around here. :D

201 ChampagneKitty August 28, 2014 at 2:14 PM

Today is my birthday. I am 44 years old today.

That is all.

202 Enfield303 August 28, 2014 at 2:23 PM

Happy Birthday Champagne Kitty! Have fun and enjoy your day!!

207 Shasta Daisy August 28, 2014 at 2:56 PM

Birthday blessings to you, Champagne Kitty.
Hope your day was filled with everything that makes you happy.

208 Tom August 28, 2014 at 3:00 PM

Shasta Daisy, thanks for the parking tip, jury duty style. I have a habit of being “deselected” myself.

So I finally found a way out of jury duty, while still being respectful to the court. ( Not lying). If you “reschedule”, they let your choose the start date, within a certain time frame.

I choose FRIDAY, knowing the chances of a jury trial starting on Friday are slim to none.

It’s worked twice now, including as recently as Aug. 15.

If you serve Shasta Daisy, you’d probably be a good juror.

209 Tom August 28, 2014 at 3:02 PM

Happy Birthday to Garden Girl too! My wife and daughter really enjoy her column……

210 Marissa August 28, 2014 at 3:37 PM

Happy Birthday, Champagne Kitty and Nicole! :-)

211 Shasta Daisy August 28, 2014 at 3:52 PM

Garden Girl…Happy BIrthday!
May your life be full of friends and fun times.

Friends are flowers that never fade.

212 Shasta Daisy August 28, 2014 at 3:55 PM

FYI…Dismissed from jury duty until October.

But the trip to Martinez was not wasted.
Coffee with a friend.

And, tonite…off to a concert at Broadway Plaza.
Perfect nite!

Atticus Thraxx presses his body weight:

214 Enfield33 August 28, 2014 at 4:45 PM

@ J.

Hahaha… That’s funny. That’s exactly how I pictured Atticus to look like.

215 Silva August 28, 2014 at 4:55 PM

Some people I’ve talked to actually like jury duty. I don’t know, I’ve not yet done it.

I took a shower in a bucket today. A really large bucket. There’s a lot of water in it. Wow!

216 Enfield303 August 28, 2014 at 5:36 PM

Of the three times I’ve been called to jury duty, I’ve never made it all the way to trial. Sounds fascinating though.

217 Kad August 28, 2014 at 5:42 PM

Happy Birthday to Champagne Kitty. Hope you are feeling well enough to enjoy it.

218 Atticus Thraxx August 28, 2014 at 5:47 PM

Sweet Purple Jesus! Dude is jacked. His bicep is damn near as big as my thigh Enfield! I don’t cut an imposing figure. And when I bruise badly I frown. Thanks J.
Happy Birthday Kitty. 44? Just a kid! ;)
Silva it was Conan. These last two are Aldrin and Grohl.
Four day weekend and no matter what, no one can take away this LAST! w00t!

219 ChampagneKitty August 28, 2014 at 5:50 PM

Happy Birthday, Nicole/Garden Girl!

Thank you for all the birthday wishes! I haven’t done anything special to celebrate. I wanted to go out and have a good meal in one of my favorite spots, but that hasn’t happened. I still have time, but I don’t think I’m going anywhere today. I appreciate all the wishes, though. It is nice to just have it acknowledged.

220 Marissa August 28, 2014 at 5:54 PM

Nicole, I’ve been by your shop in Clayton and was very surprised at the selection of flora you have available. I really hope you have a very Happy Birthday.

221 Atticus Thraxx August 28, 2014 at 7:40 PM

Mid-air collision or homicide? :

222 Marianne August 28, 2014 at 8:23 PM

Definite homicide, but a beautiful picture nonetheless, Atticus.

223 Enfield303 August 28, 2014 at 8:33 PM

I ‘m thinking more like manslaughter (or bee slaughter ) . Probably going for the same flower

224 anon August 28, 2014 at 9:08 PM

It looks like a humdinger!

225 Antler August 29, 2014 at 2:50 AM

Blossom at #205…. Hi, I’m late dropping by Whatever today, but please do wish Nicole a most Happy Day after Birthday.

I did make contact with ChampagneKitty.

Hope you are doing well and being your dynamic, friendly self, Blossom!

226 Jojo Potato August 29, 2014 at 7:54 AM

“Defy our expectations in Diablo Valley”. Advertising headline from this months AAA magazine. Two page sppread fillled with breathless ad copy. “Delectable farmers markets, edgy craft brewers and more music than any other valley”. That Concord place really sounds great!

227 Jojo Potato August 29, 2014 at 7:54 AM

Whoops, it should be “Defy your expectations…”

228 Antler August 29, 2014 at 10:50 AM

Oh, just LOOK at that cute Henesy dog just posted by Animal Services as being up for adoption!

229 Antler August 29, 2014 at 10:59 AM

Atticus, super pic! I’m going for a title something like “Clean Kill”.

I read recently that hummingbirds also eat a great many mosquitoes….very much an omnivorous bird. As I write this, I heard the baby squeekies from a hummingbird nest in the magnolia tree just outside the slider and near the feeder, which the parents defend with a vengeance against other hummers and even against big orioles.

230 Antler August 29, 2014 at 11:02 AM

Shasta at #212 …… Yea! Are you buying Halloween candy early?

231 Kirkwood August 29, 2014 at 2:18 PM

Panhandler alert! The Gypsies are coming! The Gypsies are coming!
Friday, 2 pm, a pregnant woman, 2 small kids, and a man about 30 opposite the doors to Safeway. Man was waving to shoppers exiting the store. I watched from a short distance and was apparently noticed. When I returned from the car with my camera,they had moved out to the lot entrance.

232 Kad August 29, 2014 at 3:14 PM

233 Killjoy August 29, 2014 at 5:04 PM

Kirkwood, which Safeway? There are so many in the area.

I don’t mind being last.
