Overnight Closures of Caldecott Tunnel’s 2nd Bore Planned for Upcoming Weekends

August 8, 2014 · 10 comments

Motorists can expect delays during overnight closures of an eastbound bore of the state Highway 24 Caldecott Tunnel from Oakland to Orinda over the next two weekends as crews work on the roadway, according to Caltrans.

The Caldecott Tunnel’s far-left eastbound bore will be closed on Friday & Saturday night from 8pm to noon, and again from from 8pm Sunday to 7am
Monday, Caltrans is reporting.

Closures are scheduled for the same times the weekend of Aug. 15 – Aug. 18.

During the closures workers plan to complete the realignment of the eastbound approach to the tunnel’s second bore, which no longer needs to be shifted to accommodate westbound traffic. The alignment changes will reflect the bore’s permanent eastbound direction and should make the drive leading up to the bore smoother, according to Caltrans.

Caltrans officials say the roadwork is expected to cause eastbound delays of five to 20 minutes. Westbound traffic should not be affected.

I’m going to the A’s game tomorrow and this really sucks.

the unionized gub’mint workers are looking forward to some of that fat weekend overtime, compliments of us generous taxpayers!

Once again Caltrans has given us the wrong dates. Last night as we came home, they had the second bore closed. They were busy working. On the right side of the road was a sign that said the work would start at 08/08/14. We came though on 08/07/14 at 10:30 PM.

@Smart, Would you rather they do the work during normal business hours for straight pay? I bet the commuters would love that.

Instead of being my negative self, I will say this is a good idea and a much needed one too. Straightening the road should help a great deal with traffic leading up to the tunnel not having to slow down as much.

6 @#2-----I suppose you'd prefer they work during the week? August 8, 2014 at 5:09 PM

And cause massive, commute time traffic jams. Please unstick your head from the dark place you have it.

#6, Not going to happen.

8 It's 13 miles further from Coliseum to Walnut Creek by way of Dublin. August 8, 2014 at 7:02 PM

Moving at freeway speed rather than tunnel delay could get you there in just about the same time. Sycamore Valley Road is about the same either way.

I wish that they would spend the same time working on cleaning and redoing the walls and the lights in the tunnel. It looks like something out of a Zombie movie.

@Dave B – they’ve been working out there for weeks. This weekend work is “news” because one of the east bound tunnels will be closed until noon Saturday and Sunday and could result in traffic delays of “of five to 20 minutes”. Normally they work only at night and are gone before the morning commute.
